# Patagonia

_Granite towers, glaciers and the end of the world_

## What should you know before visiting Patagonia?

Patagonia is shared wilderness across southern Argentina and Chile — Torres del Paine’s granite spires, Perito Moreno’s ice wall and El Chaltén’s Fitz Roy trails reset your sense of scale. Visit November–March in austral summer; December–February is peak, so book W Trek refugios early. Spanish dominates outside park hubs; pack for wind even on sunny days.

The shared wilderness of southern Argentina and Chile: Torres del Paine's granite spires, the advancing Perito Moreno glacier and trekking that resets your sense of scale.

## Quick facts

- **bestTime**: November–March (austral summer); December–February peak
- **currency**: Argentine Peso (ARS) & Chilean Peso (CLP)
- **language**: Spanish; English in parks and tourist hubs
- **dailyBudget**: $90–$160 mid-range
- **flightTime**: ~14h from New York to El Calafate (via Buenos Aires)

## How many days do you need in Patagonia?

Ten to fourteen days covers both sides well: 4–5 days in Torres del Paine (Chile), 3–4 in El Chaltén and El Calafate (Argentina), plus travel days. The W Trek alone needs five. Distances are huge — flying between hubs saves days over buses.

## When is the best time to visit Patagonia?

November to March is the season, when trails are open and days stretch to 17 hours. December–February brings the best weather and biggest crowds; November and March offer solitude with colder, windier conditions. Most refugios close entirely May–September.

## How expensive is Patagonia?

Budget $90–$160 per day mid-range. Refugio beds cost $50–$130, park entry $25–$35, and long-distance buses $30–$60 per leg. Argentina is significantly cheaper than Chile thanks to the exchange rate. Booking everything 6+ months ahead is essential in peak season.

## Do you need a guide for Torres del Paine?

No — the W and O circuits are well-marked and done independently by thousands each year, but refugio or campsite reservations are mandatory and sell out months ahead. Hire a guide for ice hiking on Grey Glacier or any off-circuit routes.

## Where to stay

Patagonia is a chain of bases, not one city neighbourhood: El Calafate for Perito Moreno, El Chaltén for Fitz Roy treks, and Puerto Natales for Torres del Paine. Mid-range hotel nights typically run $100–$220; park refugios and Explora-tier lodges diverge sharply. Book beds before flights in December–February.

- **El Calafate (Argentina)** — Perito Moreno Glacier access and Argentine gateway logistics Tourist-facing high street, lake views and early coach departures to the glacier boardwalks. Functional rather than charming — you are here for ice, not nightlife. Good first or last Argentine hub when flying via Buenos Aires.
- **El Chaltén (Argentina)** — Self-guided day treks to Fitz Roy and Laguna de los Tres viewpoints Trailhead village: backpacks, craft beer and weather reports over breakfast. Wind defines the mood. Sleep here for summit-view hikes; do not expect glacier-boardwalk tourism — that stays in Calafate.
- **Puerto Natales (Chile)** — Torres del Paine logistics, last supplies and pre-/post-W Trek recovery Waterfront warehouses, gear shops and briefing nights before park transfers. Wind and weather talk dominate cafés. This is the Chilean staging town — not inside the massif itself.
- **Torres del Paine (park lodges & refugios)** — Multi-day W or O Circuit hiking with beds on the trail Granite towers, guanacos on the wind and strict reservation systems. You sleep where the itinerary dictates. Independent camping is possible with permits; full-board lodges remove stove logistics at a price.
