## Can I claim Air France compensation as an overseas traveller?

Possibly. Air France delay compensation depends on the route, operating carrier and disruption, not your passport or where you bought the ticket. A covered flight arriving at least three hours late may qualify; cancellation rules also consider advance notice and replacement timings. Neither situation guarantees payment.

Find “operated by” on the itinerary. An AF codeshare number does not necessarily mean Air France operated the flight. Direct a statutory disruption claim to the operating carrier; the [French aviation authority explains this responsibility](https://www.ecologie.gouv.fr/politiques-publiques/que-faire-cas-retard-depart-annulation-dun-vol-refus-dembarquement).

These examples apply the [EU coverage guidance](https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/passenger-rights/air/index_en.htm) and [CAA UK261 matrix](https://www.caa.co.uk/media/jn3npj1h/uk-261-annex-1.pdf). Overlap does not mean two payments for the same disruption; disclose assistance or compensation already received under another country’s rules.

| Example itinerary | Starting point for coverage |
| --- | --- |
| Paris–New York, Air France-operated | EU261: departure from the EU. |
| Singapore–Paris, Air France-operated | EU261: EU-carrier arrival from outside the EU. |
| New York–Paris, Delta-operated AF codeshare | The AF flight number alone does not establish EU261 coverage. |
| London–Paris, Air France-operated | UK departure coverage; EU coverage can overlap. |

## How much compensation can Air France owe for a delay?

Eligible EU261 claims have standard cash bands of €250, €400 or €600 per passenger. UK261 uses separate pound amounts, not currency conversions. Measure arrival delay at the relevant final destination, not simply a late take-off. Distance, rerouting and a possible extraordinary-circumstances defence affect the result.

The [Air France passenger-rights notice](https://wwws.airfrance.us/information/legal/assistance-et-indemnisation) sets out the euro bands below. For the longest non-intra-EU journeys, arrival three to under four hours late can mean €300 instead of €600. Eligible UK delay awards are £220, £350 or £520, with £260 possible in the long-haul three-to-four-hour band; see the [CAA delay guidance](https://www.caa.co.uk/air-passengers/travel-problems-and-rights/flight-delays-and-cancellations/delays/).

An airline must substantiate an extraordinary-circumstances defence. Ask what happened and what reasonable measures were taken. The [EU guidance on disruption causes](https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/passenger-rights/air/index_en.htm) distinguishes ordinary technical problems from exceptional events.

| EU261 distance category | Standard cash band, before applicable reduction |
| --- | --- |
| Up to 1,500 km | €250 |
| Intra-EU over 1,500 km; other flights above 1,500 km and up to 3,500 km | €400 |
| Other flights over 3,500 km | €600 |

## Does every Air France cancellation within 14 days qualify?

No. Less than 14 days’ notice is an important test, but a sufficiently close replacement schedule can remove fixed compensation. An extraordinary-circumstances defence may also apply. Keep the time you received the cancellation notice and compare both the new departure and arrival against the original itinerary.

The [CAA cancellation guidance](https://www.caa.co.uk/air-passengers/travel-problems-and-rights/flight-delays-and-cancellations/cancellations/) explains these timing exceptions. Both departure and arrival conditions must hold. If an exception fails, assess the claim; that does not automatically establish the full award.

| When informed | Notice or rerouting exception to fixed compensation |
| --- | --- |
| At least 14 days before departure | No fixed cancellation compensation on the notice test. |
| 7 to fewer than 14 days | Replacement departs no more than 2 hours early AND arrives less than 4 hours late. |
| Fewer than 7 days | Replacement departs no more than 1 hour early AND arrives less than 2 hours late. |

## What is the difference between a refund, care and compensation?

A refund returns eligible unused ticket costs when you choose not to travel; rerouting gets you to your destination instead. Care covers necessary assistance while waiting. Fixed compensation addresses qualifying disruption. Keep these requests separate: a valid reason to reject fixed compensation does not automatically remove the other rights.

For a covered cancellation, choose refund or rerouting deliberately; do not request a refund if you still need the airline to transport you. The [DGAC passenger-rights leaflet](https://www.ecologie.gouv.fr/sites/default/files/documents/flyer_droits_passagers_aeriens_2026.pdf) explains those alternatives. A qualifying five-hour departure delay also allows abandoning the journey and requesting reimbursement.

Ask staff for meals and necessary accommodation and transport. Delay-care thresholds depend on distance; do not confuse them with the three-hour compensation test. If care is unavailable, keep itemised receipts for reasonable replacements. Care can remain due regardless of the cause; the [CAA explains care and expenses](https://www.caa.co.uk/air-passengers/travel-problems-and-rights/flight-delays-and-cancellations/delays/).

## Can a missed connection at Paris CDG qualify for compensation?

Yes, a covered single-reservation connection can qualify based on arrival at the final destination, even when the first flight’s delay was short. A separately purchased onward flight is different: do not automatically treat two tickets as one protected connection. Keep the complete booking and replacement itinerary.

Example: Manchester–Paris–Tokyo on one reservation, with a 70-minute inbound delay and next-day Tokyo arrival. Record the Tokyo arrival delay and the missed-connection cause, not just the Manchester departure. This is a hypothetical application of the [Air France v Folkerts judgment](https://curia.europa.eu/jcms/upload/docs/application/pdf/2013-02/cp130018en.pdf), not a guaranteed outcome.

With separate tickets, retain any rights on the disrupted individual flight, but check insurance or a self-transfer guarantee for the missed onward ticket. The [CAA distinguishes separate bookings](https://www.caa.co.uk/air-passengers/travel-problems-and-rights/flight-delays-and-cancellations/delays/). A transit through CDG alone does not settle every mixed-carrier or non-EU-to-non-EU itinerary.

## What evidence should I save before making an Air France claim?

Build one small evidence folder containing the complete itinerary, boarding documents, disruption messages, arrival details and itemised expenses. Separate evidence of the flight’s disruption from evidence of money spent. Save copies before app screens change, and record the claim reference after submitting your request.

Name documents by date and purpose. Keep originals; redact unrelated card or identity information from copies. Never publish a booking reference or boarding-pass barcode in a public complaint.

- Passenger names, ticket numbers, booking reference and every operating carrier.
- Original and replacement schedules, with dates and local time zones.
- Cancellation notification timestamp and any written explanation of the cause.
- Final arrival record, missed-connection details and help requested at the airport.
- Itemised receipts, amounts, currencies and a total for each expense category.

## How do I submit an Air France compensation claim directly?

Use Air France’s official claim channel after confirming it was the relevant operating carrier. Describe the disruption chronologically, identify each passenger and state whether you request fixed compensation, expense reimbursement or a ticket refund. Keep the submitted text and acknowledgement so follow-up does not restart the evidence trail.

Open the [official Air France claim form](https://wwws.airfrance.us/claim), linked from its passenger-rights notice. Localisation or sign-in may change the form; if necessary, navigate through Contact us on your local Air France website.

- 1. Gather the booking and evidence, then identify the flight and affected passengers.
- 2. State the original itinerary, what changed and the actual final arrival.
- 3. Request the applicable compensation separately from receipt-backed expenses.
- 4. Attach relevant documents and save the confirmation and case number.
- 5. Follow up under that reference; use the [free claim toolkit](/flight-compensation/#claim-toolkit) to structure your wording.

## What if Air France rejects my claim or does not reply?

First identify what was rejected and ask for the factual basis. Then use the escalation body that covers your flight and dispute. Air France’s French identity does not make every case a French mediation case, and reporting a regulatory breach is not the same as recovering your individual payment.

For eligible UK-airport disputes, [AviationADR lists Air France](https://www.aviationadr.org.uk/complaints-process/airline-and-airport-members-aviationadr/). Its [entry rules](https://www.aviationadr.org.uk/complaints-process/what-to-do-before/) require a final written response or eight weeks for the airline to respond. Submit within 12 months of the final response, or within 12 months of your airline complaint if unanswered.

Air France’s [French conditions identify Médiation Tourisme et Voyage](https://wwws.airfrance.fr/information/legal/edito-conditions-particulieres) after an unsatisfactory written response or 60 days without one. Check [MTV admissibility](https://mtv.travel/demande-saisine/): apply within one year of the written airline complaint, and do not pursue the same dispute simultaneously through another mediator or court.

For a regulatory report within its remit, the [DGAC requires an airline complaint first and at least two months awaiting its response](https://www.ecologie.gouv.fr/politiques-publiques/que-faire-cas-retard-depart-annulation-dun-vol-refus-dembarquement). Its enforcement work is separate from individual reimbursement.

## Must I accept an Air France voucher instead of cash compensation?

No: Air France’s passenger-rights notice offers cash compensation as well as a non-refundable transportation-credit alternative. A larger-looking voucher is not the same as money in your account. Before accepting an offer, establish whether it settles compensation, refunds the ticket or merely supplies meals during disruption.

Check expiry, permitted travellers and any settlement wording. The [Air France notice](https://wwws.airfrance.us/information/legal/assistance-et-indemnisation) distinguishes cash from credit. Do not assume an airport meal voucher is the final answer to a later compensation request.

## How long do I have to claim, and when should Air France pay?

There is no single worldwide Air France claim deadline. Court limitation periods, mediation admission windows and airline response times are different clocks. Claim promptly and verify the rules for the forum handling your case. An escalation waiting period is not a promise that payment arrives when that period ends.

The [EU passenger-rights FAQ](https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/passenger-rights/air/faq/index_en.htm) says legal-action limits depend on national law and distinguishes the seven-day ticket-refund requirement from compensation, for which the existing EU rules set no payment deadline. Check an approaching limitation deadline with a qualified adviser; do not assume correspondence or a pending complaint pauses it.

## Should I use AirHelp after starting an Air France claim?

Optional paid handling may suit someone who wants help with follow-up and accepts the contract and fees. Starting a direct airline claim does not itself require a claims company. If you already appointed any paid representative, check that agreement before switching services or submitting another claim for the same disruption.

Our decision rule: try the direct route when your evidence and request are straightforward; consider handling support when the administrative work is the obstacle. A paid service does not create eligibility. The [CAA recommends contacting the airline first and checking agency charges](https://www.caa.co.uk/about-us/make-a-report-or-complaint/make-a-complaint/complaints-about-airlines-or-airports/).

Before signing, check authority or assignment terms, withdrawal conditions and what happens if the airline pays you directly. Avoid overlapping appointments. Read our [AirHelp versus DIY comparison](/guides/when-airhelp-worth-it-vs-diy-claim) for the detailed trade-offs.

## How was this Air France claims guide researched?

This is desk research of official airline, regulator, court and mediation sources checked on 5 October 2026. It is not a report of a personal claim, legal review or measured success rate. Route examples are illustrative; the law applicable to your flight date and actual evidence remain decisive.

EU reform Regulation 2026/2202 has been published, but [Article 3 sets application from 23 October 2027](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/PDF/?uri=OJ%3AL_202602202). This guide describes the existing framework, not future procedures applied early.

Next: use the [free eligibility checker](/flight-compensation/#checker), read the [full passenger-rights guide](/guides/flight-delay-compensation-rights), or consult the [Air France airline page](/airlines/air-france) for wider policy context. A checker result is a starting point, not a claim decision.
