# Are Points Worth It for Annual Fee Break-Even? 2026

When a card's annual fee pays back through points and perks — and when fee math uses fantasy redemptions you will never book.

> Educational guide — we earn nothing from card issuers. Award pricing and cash fares change daily; verify live before transferring points. Framework checked August 2026.

## Are points worth it when chasing annual fee break-even?

Sometimes — when realistic redemptions plus perks you will actually use exceed the fee within 12 months. Often no — when break-even spreadsheets assume business-class awards you never find, or when a no-fee card plus sale cash beats the fee math.

Break-even must use redemptions you would book anyway — not aspirational first-class.

Compare to [welcome bonus minimum spend](/guides/are-points-worth-it-for-welcome-bonus-minimum-spend) as a separate calculation.

## How do you value annual fee break-even?

Sum realistic redemption value at your CPP floor plus perks with cash equivalents (lounge visits you would pay for, insurance you would buy). Subtract annual fee and any interest or MS costs. If net is negative, downgrade or cancel before renewal.

**Unused perks:** lounge credits you forget are zero value.

**Opportunity cost:** fee cash might fund travel insurance or flights directly.

| Signal | Lean points | Lean cash / skip |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Saver space at low published band | Yes | No |
| Dynamic/peak pricing only | No | Yes |
| Cash sale under your floor | No | Yes |
| Taxes approach cash fare | No | Yes |

## When does skipping the annual fee beat keeping the card?

When perks go unused, when bonus points sit unredeemed, when a no-fee card earns adequately for your spend, or when sale cash beats the awards you assumed in break-even math.

## Annual fee break-even — verdict

Verdict: annual fees win on perks you use and redemptions you actually book — not on spreadsheet fantasy. Run conservative CPP. Not for keeping a card solely because the marketing page lists 15 benefits you never touch.
