# Are Points Worth It for Companion Certificates? 2026 Guide

Companion pass and companion certificate maths — when a second seat for fees beats cash for two, and when spend thresholds and blackout rules make certificates worthless.

## Are companion certificates worth it?

Worth it when the certificate’s opportunity cost beats buying a second cash ticket on routes you actually fly — and companion taxes stay low. Not worth it when blackouts force expensive fares, companion taxes exceed sale cash for two, or you would not have spent toward the threshold organically.

We do not recommend specific cards — this is certificate arithmetic only.

## How do you value a companion certificate?

Value = (cash fare for second passenger you would buy) − (companion taxes/fees) − (allocated cost of reaching certificate). Allocate certificate cost across expected uses over expiry window — if one trip only, the full threshold/fee lands on that trip.

**Second passenger cash:** use the fare class you would actually purchase, not basic economy fiction.

**Expiry:** unused certificate value is zero — calendar reminders matter.

**Route restrictions:** transatlantic-only certs are useless for domestic-only households.

| Scenario | Often worth it | Often skip |
| --- | --- | --- |
| High cash short-haul pair | Yes | No |
| Companion taxes >£200 long-haul | No | Yes |
| Forced spend to earn cert | No | Yes |
| Two sales tickets cheaper | No | Yes |

## Companion certificates — verdict

Verdict: companion certs shine for predictable pairs on expensive routes — not as flex for aspirational trips you never book. Model one realistic trip, not ten fantasy routes. Not for solo travellers or households that never fly the eligible carrier.

## Companion certificate FAQ

Certificate rules change with card terms — read issuer documentation.

**Stack with points?** Programme-specific — often one discount instrument per ticket.

**Basic economy companion?** Many certs exclude lowest buckets.
