# Are Hotel Free-Night Certificates Worth It? 2026 Guide

Annual free-night awards and certificate maths — when a cert beats cash at aspirational properties, and when category caps and resort fees make certs worthless.

## Are hotel free-night certificates worth it?

Certificates win when redeemable at properties where cash (or points) would exceed the cert's imputed value after resort fees and parking — often upper-tier urban hotels on peak nights. They lose at cheap suburban properties where cash is below the cert's opportunity cost or when expiry forces a wasteful burn.

Certs are not "free" — they cost annual fees, elite nights or card spend.

## How do you value a hotel free-night certificate?

Value = (lowest cash night you would actually stay at that property category) − (resort fees, parking, taxes on award nights) − (cert acquisition cost allocated to that night). Compare to best available points redemption at same hotel — sometimes points beat certs on off-peak dynamic pricing.

**Category caps:** cert valid only to Cat 4/5/etc. — search properties inside cap first.

**Peak blackouts:** some certs exclude NYE or events — read fine print.

**Split stays:** cert covers one night; compare blended rate for full stay.

## When should you use cash instead of a free-night cert?

When property cash is below your cert imputed value, when fees dominate, when you would let the cert expire unused anyway (use or lose — even low value beats zero), or when points nights price lower on dynamic charts.

## Hotel free-night certificates — verdict

Verdict: treat certs like coupons with expiry — plan the highest cash night they allow, not the nearest Holiday Inn unless cash is insane everywhere else. Not for travellers who will not calendar cert expiry six months out.

## Hotel certificate FAQ

Certificate categories and fees change — verify on the hotel booking engine.
