## Are points worth it for award stopovers?

Sometimes — programmes that allow a free or low-cost stopover on one award (historically strong on some Star Alliance and Middle East carriers) can deliver two cities for one redemption when cash multi-city would cost more. Often no — when stopovers add surcharges, require premium-cabin mileage bands, or cash open-jaw sales undercut the award all-in.

## How do you value a stopover award?

Price three trips: (1) award with stopover including all taxes, (2) cash open-jaw or multi-city for same cities, (3) two separate awards or cash legs if stopover rules fail. Divide (cash saved or second-city value you would pay) by incremental miles over a direct award. Compare cents-per-point to your floor.

**Incremental miles:** some programmes charge zero extra; others reprice the whole itinerary at higher bands.

**Taxes:** long stopovers can trigger higher fuel surcharges on certain carriers.

**Time cost:** a three-day stop you did not want is negative value.

## When does cash beat a stopover award?

When LCC or sale cash links the cities cheaply, when stopover rules expired or tightened on your programme, when only dynamic pricing shows, or when detour time blows vacation days. ## Stopover awards — verdict

Verdict: stopovers are a niche sweet spot for planners who wanted two cities anyway — not a reason to burn transferable points on a forced detour. Run three-way maths; if cash open-jaw wins, fly cash. Not for travellers who treat stopovers as "free" without pricing the extra hotel nights.
