# Are Points Worth It When Taxes & Surcharges Eat Value? 2026

Fuel surcharges and carrier-imposed fees on awards — when high YQ/YR makes miles redemptions worse than cash, and which programmes and partners avoid the damage.

> Educational guide — we earn nothing from card issuers. Award pricing and cash fares change daily; verify live before transferring points. Framework checked August 2026.

## When do taxes and surcharges make points worthless?

When carrier-imposed surcharges (often labelled YQ/YR) plus government taxes approach or exceed the cash fare you would buy — common on some Atlantic and UK-origin long-haul awards. Miles cover the fare; they rarely cover surcharges. Always subtract full taxes/fees from cash before computing cents-per-point.

Award taxes can exceed £400 on premium cabins — search live before transferring.

## How do you run surcharge-aware CPP maths?

CPP = (comparable cash fare − total award taxes/fees) ÷ miles required. If fees alone exceed sale cash, stop. Compare partners on the same alliance — Aer Lingus vs BA on Avios, Air Canada vs Lufthansa on Star Alliance — surcharges differ by operating carrier.

**Cash fare baseline:** standard economy or business you would actually buy — not basic economy fiction unless you would fly BE.

**Near-zero surcharge partners:** often US domestic, some Latin America metal, select Asian carriers — verify per route.

| Pattern | Typical surcharge pain | Move |
| --- | --- | --- |
| BA long-haul premium | High | Partner hunt or cash sale |
| US domestic economy | Low | Points often fine |
| Short-haul EU LCC cash sale | N/A | Cash wins |

## Taxes and surcharges — verdict

Verdict: surcharges are the silent killer of Atlantic award math — always open the tax breakdown before transferring. A "great" mileage price with brutal YQ is a bad redemption. Not for travellers who only read miles required, not pounds due at checkout.

## Award surcharge FAQ

Tax breakdown is on the award checkout screen — screenshot it.

**Avoid UK APD on awards?** APD still applies on UK departures — separate from YQ.

**Fuel surcharge dropped on cash?** May still apply on awards — asymmetry happens.
