# Borobudur Guide 2026: Climbing Tickets, Sunrise and Rules

Borobudur guide: official climbing and sunrise tickets, upanat sandals, 2026 restoration limits, what to wear, getting there from Yogyakarta, and Prambanan.

## What do you need to know before visiting Borobudur in 2026?

Decide whether you want to climb. Climbing needs the temple-structure ticket, which includes a guide and the upanat sandals every climber must wear; a courtyard ticket keeps you on the ground. Until 24 October 2026, restoration of the main stupa limits how high regular visitors can go. Book through the official InJourney ticket site.

Visitor services at Borobudur are run by PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan & Ratu Boko, part of InJourney Destination, which sells tickets on its [official ticket site](https://ticket.borobudurpark.com/en/). The Ministry of Culture’s museum and heritage agency looks after the monument itself, and its notices can change access at short notice.

The big short-term change is the restoration of the Mahastupa, the crowning stupa. A notice on the official ticket site sets the work period as 16 September to 24 October 2026. During it, regular and pilgrim visits can reach level 8 (the first terrace area), sunrise and sunset visits level 9 (the second terrace area), access is limited to the east, south-east, south, south-west and west sides, and the north courtyard is temporarily closed. Visitors must keep out of work zones.

One more date to note: the official site sells tickets for an Andrea Bocelli concert at Borobudur on 31 October 2026. If your visit falls around then, check the ticket site for any changes to normal visiting.

## Can you climb Borobudur, and what are the rules?

Yes, every day, with a temple-structure ticket. Climbers must wear upanat, woven sandals designed to protect the stone, and go up with the guide included in the ticket. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before your slot, because late arrivals may find access limited. Keep your hands off the reliefs, statues and stupas.

Climbing returned with limits after years of concern about wear on the stones. In June 2022 the tourism minister set a cap of 1,200 climbers a day and announced special sandals ([Antara, 6 June 2022](https://en.antaranews.com/news/232789/limiting-visitors-to-climb-borobudur-temple-inevitable-step-minister)). Upanat, made from pandan leaves and other natural materials, have been compulsory since December 2023 ([Kompas, 31 May 2025](https://travel.kompas.com/read/2025/05/31/150300327/alasan-wisatawan-pakai-sandal-upanat-untuk-naik-ke-candi-borobudur)).

Since the third week of July 2025, climbing has been allowed every day; before that, Monday ascents were limited to school groups ([InJourney, 22 July 2025](https://injourneydestination.id/en/naik-candi-borobudur-bisa-tiap-hari/)). InJourney said trials to balance preservation with visitor numbers were continuing, so book ahead rather than relying on a walk-up slot. The official [structure ticket](https://ticket.borobudurpark.com/en/borobudur-temple/) lists a wristband, upanat to keep and a tour guide, with climbing from 08:30 to 17:00 WIB.

On the monument, follow your guide and stay on open routes. Do not sit on the stupas or reach into them to touch the Buddha statues inside, an old habit that damages the stone.

## Which Borobudur ticket should you buy, and where?

Buy from the official InJourney ticket site. Choose the temple-structure ticket to climb, or the courtyard ticket to stay on the grounds. Sunrise and sunset tickets are capped at 100 people a day; the sunrise ticket cost IDR 1,000,000 for international visitors and IDR 750,000 for domestic visitors when we checked in October 2026.

The [official ticket site](https://ticket.borobudurpark.com/en/) asks you to choose domestic or foreign visitor first, then shows the products and prices for your date. In October 2026 it listed the temple-structure ticket (climbing plus courtyard access, wristband, upanat and guide); the courtyard ticket (grounds only); [Borobudur Sunrise](https://ticket.borobudurpark.com/en/borobudur-sunrise/); Borobudur Sunset with dinner; a picnic breakfast on Dagi Hill; Manohara Premium, with VIP entry and a private guide; and student reservations for domestic school groups.

We have not printed the structure or courtyard prices, because the official checkout loads them for your nationality and date and we could not retrieve them to re-check in October 2026. Use the checkout total as your benchmark: resellers add their own margin, and some quote the courtyard ticket only. The site gave hours of 08:30–17:00 WIB for the structure and 06:30–16:30 WIB for the courtyard, with the courtyard hours marked for domestic tourists, so foreign visitors should confirm their entry time at checkout.

| Ticket on the official site (checked October 2026) | What it includes | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Temple structure | Climb plus courtyard, wristband, upanat and guide | Climbing 08:30–17:00 WIB; arrive 30–45 minutes early |
| Temple ground (courtyard) | Grounds only; no climbing | Listed hours 06:30–16:30 WIB, marked for domestic tourists |
| Borobudur Sunrise | Wristband, flashlight, upanat, professional guide, breakfast at Manohara | IDR 1,000,000 international, IDR 750,000 domestic; 100 a day; starts 04:00 WIB |
| Borobudur Sunset | Sunset entry with dinner and a souvenir | Limited to 100 people a day |
| Picnic Breakfast Dagi Abhinaya | Sunrise picnic on Dagi Hill, facing the temple | Not a temple climb |
| Manohara Premium | Premium entrance through Manohara, VIP access and a private guide | Price shown at checkout |

## What are the Borobudur sunrise options?

There are three main choices: the official Borobudur Sunrise ticket on the temple itself, capped at 100 people a day; the official picnic breakfast on Dagi Hill inside the park; or Punthuk Setumbu, a hill outside the park where you watch the temple and volcanoes emerge from the mist. All three need a pre-dawn start.

The official sunrise ticket starts at 04:00 WIB. When InJourney relaunched sunrise visits in October 2025 it said viewing takes place on the temple’s ninth level, from about 05:00 ([InJourney, 18 October 2025](https://injourneydestination.id/en/borobudur-sunrise-injourney-hadirkan-pengalaman-sunrise-yang-tak-terlupakan-untuk-wisatawan/)). During the 2026 Mahastupa restoration, the official notice keeps sunrise and sunset access open to level 9 on the permitted sides. The price includes a guide, upanat and breakfast, which matters when you compare tours that bundle it.

Punthuk Setumbu is a hill about 400 m above sea level in the Menoreh hills. Central Java’s [official tourism site](https://visitjawatengah.jatengprov.go.id/en/destinations/punthuk-setumbu) says it is about a 15-minute walk from the car park on a rough track and advises arriving before 05:00. It is the cheaper, more independent option, but you see Borobudur from a distance rather than standing on it.

Whichever you choose, mist and cloud decide the show. Ask any tour which sunrise it includes, because “Borobudur sunrise” in a listing title can mean any of the three.

## What should you wear to Borobudur?

The official ticket site does not publish a detailed dress code, but Borobudur is a Buddhist monument still used for worship, so cover your shoulders and knees as a courtesy. Climbers swap their shoes for upanat sandals. Bring a hat, sun cream and water for the exposed terraces, and a warm layer for sunrise.

Borobudur remains a place of pilgrimage: the official notices refer to pilgrim visits alongside regular ones, and the ticket site sells Waisak programmes. Modest clothing avoids awkwardness with staff and worshippers; a light scarf or sarong is useful if you are unsure.

Upanat replace your shoes on the monument, so wear footwear that is easy to take off and carry. The terraces have little shade, which makes late-morning visits hot, and you will be on narrow stairways, so keep bags small.

## How do you get to Borobudur from Yogyakarta?

Borobudur is in Magelang Regency, Central Java, north-west of Yogyakarta. The simplest option is a car with driver or a booked transfer, which also works for sunrise slots. Public transport is possible but slower and does not suit a 04:00 start. As a planning assumption, allow at least an hour each way, more at weekends.

Most visitors stay in Yogyakarta and do Borobudur as a half-day or full-day trip. For a 04:00 sunrise check-in, staying in Borobudur village removes the pre-dawn drive. Our [Yogyakarta guide](/destinations/yogyakarta) covers where to base yourself in the city.

If you hire a driver, agree the route, waiting time and parking in advance, and check the starting point printed on your ticket, because sunrise, regular and premium products can use different entrances.

## Can you combine Borobudur with Prambanan, and is there a combo ticket?

Yes, but plan them as two separate visits on opposite sides of Yogyakarta. The Prambanan ticket covers the main temple plus Lumbung, Bubrah and Sewu temples and the museum. In October 2026 the only bundle on the official site was a promotion for adult domestic visitors that adds a Borobudur ticket to Prambanan.

The official [Prambanan ticket](https://ticket.borobudurpark.com/en/prambanan-temple/) includes access to Prambanan, Lumbung, Bubrah and Sewu temples and the Prambanan Museum, from 06:30 WIB. The [“Prambanan Free Borobudur”](https://ticket.borobudurpark.com/en/prambanan-free-borobudur/) offer bundles both entrance tickets; its banner limits it to adult domestic visitors from October to December 2026. Foreign visitors should price the two separately at checkout.

Prambanan lies east of Yogyakarta on the road to Solo, so pairing the two in one day means crossing the city. A workable plan is Borobudur in the morning and Prambanan in the late afternoon, with Ratu Boko, sold on the same ticket site, for sunset nearby. KAI Commuter’s Yogyakarta–Solo line stops at Brambanan station; check times in the Access by KAI app.

## Is Borobudur a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

Yes. UNESCO inscribed the Borobudur Temple Compounds in 1991. The listing covers Borobudur and two smaller temples, Mendut and Pawon, which stand on a straight axis to the east. Prambanan Temple Compounds were inscribed in the same year. Adding Mendut and Pawon to your Borobudur visit gives useful context.

UNESCO’s [Borobudur listing](https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/592/) describes the three monuments as representing phases in the attainment of Nirvana. Its main concern is development that could compromise the relationship between the monument and its wider setting, which explains much of the visitor management you will meet, from climbing limits to restoration closures.

The separate [Prambanan Temple Compounds listing](https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/642/) covers the great Hindu temple complex and nearby Buddhist temples, including Sewu. Seeing both on one trip shows how Buddhist and Hindu monument-building flourished in central Java.

## What should you check before booking a Borobudur tour?

Check whether the tour includes the temple-structure ticket or only the courtyard, which sunrise option it means, the pickup time, private or group transport, and whether Prambanan entry is included for foreign visitors. Compare the total with the official ticket price for your nationality before paying, and read the cancellation terms.

Tours sold on big platforms often bundle transport with a ticket that does not let you climb. Read the inclusions line by line: “Borobudur entrance” can mean the courtyard, and “sunrise” can mean Punthuk Setumbu. The official structure ticket already includes a guide, so a separate tour guide on the monument is optional.

Until 24 October 2026, ask how high the tour expects to go and which sides are open, so the photographs in the listing match what you will see. For family groups, small-group or private tours make it easier to keep to a booked climbing slot.

## Should you stay in Yogyakarta or near Borobudur?

Stay near Borobudur if you have a sunrise ticket or want the temple at opening time without a long drive. Stay in Yogyakarta for more choice, food and onward trains, and for an easier Prambanan visit. Many travellers split their nights: one near Borobudur, the rest in the city.

Borobudur village and the surrounding hills have guesthouses and hotels within reach of the temple and of Punthuk Setumbu. Yogyakarta has the widest range and the main rail links. If you split your stay, move to Borobudur the afternoon before a sunrise slot and return to the city after your visit.
