# Cabin Downgrade Compensation Under EU261 & UK261

EU261 and UK261 cabin downgrade reimbursement — Article 10 percentage refunds when you are placed in a lower class than ticketed, plus care and re-routing.

## What does EU261 pay if you are downgraded from business to economy?

Under EC 261/2004 Article 10, a cabin downgrade triggers partial fare reimbursement for the affected segment: 30%, 50% or 75% by distance band. UK261 mirrors that structure. Not the Article 7 delay cash band — and not for passengers who were never confirmed in the higher cabin.

Keep the original ticket showing the higher cabin and the boarding pass showing the lower cabin. Downgrade is different from denied boarding.

## How is the Article 10 percentage calculated?

The percentages in Article 10 apply to the ticket price for the affected flight segments — airlines sometimes dispute which taxes and carrier charges count. Ask for a written calculation. Extraordinary circumstances do not erase Article 10 reimbursement the way they can affect Article 7 cash.

If the airline also delays you into Article 7 territory, downgrade reimbursement and delay compensation can be separate analyses — document both.

| Distance band | Article 10 reimbursement | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Up to 1,500 km | 30% of affected fare | Cite Article 10(1) |
| 1,500–3,500 km / intra-EU >1,500 | 50% | Same band logic as Article 7 geography |
| Over 3,500 km | 75% | Long-haul downgrades |
| UK261 | Same % structure in GBP fares | Mirror regime |

## Cabin downgrade — verdict

Verdict: Article 10 percentage reimbursement is clearer than many passengers realise — claim it in writing with ticket evidence. Not for voluntary cabin changes you requested. Framework checked August 2026 — cite Article 10 explicitly; do not invent lump-sum amounts beyond the statutory percentages.

## Downgrade compensation FAQ

Downgrades trigger Article 10 percentage refunds of the affected fare, separate from delay bands. Keep cabin evidence. Upgrade bid failed? Not a downgrade claim. US itinerary? DOT/contract of carriage rules differ — EU261 needs qualifying scope. Verify the official source on your dates before you commit money, points or irreversible transfers.
