# Gili Islands Guide 2026: Which Gili and How to Get There

Gili Islands guide: which of Gili Trawangan, Gili Air or Gili Meno suits you, the best boat route from Bali or Lombok, when to go and key safety rules.

## Gili Air vs Gili Trawangan vs Gili Meno: which Gili island should you choose?

Choose Gili Trawangan for nightlife and the widest choice of places to stay. Choose Gili Meno, the smallest and quietest, for a slow beach break with early nights. Gili Air sits between them in size and pace, which suits couples and families who want calm evenings with more choice than Meno.

Indonesia’s tourism ministry describes Trawangan as the largest and most built-up of the three, with the most guesthouses, hotels and resorts, regular party nights and a loop you can cycle in about an hour, in its [Gili Trawangan guide](https://www.indonesia.travel/gb/en/travel-ideas/marine/follow-the-action-on-gili-trawangan). Its [Gili Meno page](https://www.indonesia.travel/gb/en/destination/bali-nusa-tenggara/west-nusa-tenggara/lombok---gili-meno) calls Meno the smallest island, with the fewest residents, and contrasts its quiet with Trawangan’s more touristy feel.

Gili Air is the middle island by size. We treat it as the default for a first visit if you want a sociable evening without Trawangan’s late-night party circuit, but that is our planning judgement, not an official ranking. All three islands share the same rules: no motor vehicles, boat-only access and a national marine conservation area offshore. The real differences are evening atmosphere, accommodation choice and how far you want to be from the crowds.

For a short stay, pick one island and stay put; every move between islands costs part of a day. With a week or more, splitting your stay between a lively island and a quiet one works well, as long as you plan the boat hop for a morning (see below).

| | Gili Trawangan | Gili Air | Gili Meno |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Size | Largest of the three; about an hour to cycle round | Between the other two | Smallest, with the fewest residents |
| Evenings | Regular party nights; bars can stay open late | Calmer than Trawangan (our assessment) | Quiet; described officially as serene |
| Places to stay | The most guesthouses, hotels and resorts | Fewer than Trawangan | Fewer than Trawangan |
| Best for (our verdict) | Nightlife, social travellers, widest choice | Couples, families and first-timers wanting a balance | Honeymooners and quiet beach time |
| Shared by all three | No motor vehicles; snorkelling and diving inside the Gili Matra marine conservation area | Same | Same |

## How do you get to the Gili Islands from Bali?

The simplest option is a fast boat from Bali. From Padang Bai on the east coast, the published crossing to Gili Trawangan takes about 90 minutes to two hours; the Serangan timetable we checked shows nearly four hours because the boat stops on the way. Flying to Lombok, then road and a short boat, is the alternative.

Compare the whole journey, not the headline sailing time. [Ekajaya’s published schedule](https://ekajayafastferry.com/schedule.aspx) shows Padang Bai departures reaching Gili Trawangan in about 90 minutes to two hours, with later stops at Gili Meno, Gili Air and Bangsal. [Gili Getaway’s route page](https://giligetaway.com/routes/) lists an 08:00 departure from Serangan, near Sanur, arriving at Gili Trawangan at 11:45 after calls at Nusa Penida, Gili Gede and Senggigi (both checked October 2026). Padang Bai is further from the south Bali resorts than Serangan, so add the road transfer before deciding which is quicker for you. Boats also leave from Amed on Bali’s north-east coast, which suits travellers already staying there; confirm the crossing time and arrival island with the operator.

Flying is the other main route. The [tourism ministry](https://www.indonesia.travel/gb/en/travel-ideas/marine/follow-the-action-on-gili-trawangan) puts the Bali–Lombok flight at about 25 minutes, but from Lombok International Airport (LOP) you still need a road transfer to the north-west coast. From there you take the public boat from Bangsal harbour or a private speedboat, which may leave from a nearby landing such as Teluk Nara or Teluk Kodek. Book the road and boat as one transfer if you can, and confirm which harbour and which island it serves.

The public boat from Bangsal is the cheapest crossing, and Indonesia’s [Gili Meno page](https://www.indonesia.travel/gb/en/destination/bali-nusa-tenggara/west-nusa-tenggara/lombok---gili-meno) notes that boats may wait until enough passengers have bought tickets, so arrive early in the day. The slow public car ferry from Padang Bai to Lembar in south-west Lombok takes several hours and leaves you a long drive from the Gili harbours; tickets are sold through ASDP’s [Ferizy app and website](https://www.ferizy.com/). It makes sense mainly if you are taking a vehicle or touring Lombok first. Starting in Bali? Our [Bali guide](/destinations/bali) covers where to base yourself before the boat, and our [fast-boat journey guide](/guides/bali-fast-boats-complete-journey) covers luggage, weather buffers and cancellation terms.

| Route | Typical crossing time (checked October 2026) | What to check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Fast boat from Padang Bai (east Bali) | About 1.5–2 hours to Gili Trawangan on Ekajaya’s published schedule; longer to Meno and Air | First stop and arrival island, road time to Padang Bai, check-in time |
| Fast boat from Serangan (near Sanur) | About 3¾ hours to Gili Trawangan on Gili Getaway’s published timetable, with stops | Intermediate stops, arrival island, luggage help beyond the dock |
| Fast boat from Amed (north-east Bali) | Varies by operator; confirm directly | Operator, arrival island, sea conditions on the day |
| Fly to Lombok (LOP), road transfer, then boat | About 25-minute flight, plus road transfer and a short boat ride | Which harbour (Bangsal, Teluk Nara or Teluk Kodek) and which island the boat serves |
| Public boat from Bangsal (Lombok) | Short crossing; departure may wait until enough passengers have bought tickets | Fare and departure time on the day; arrive early |
| Slow ferry Padang Bai to Lembar | Several hours, then a long road transfer to the north-west coast | Ferizy e-ticket and the check-in window printed on it |

## How do you travel between Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno?

Use the local public boats or a chartered boat; there are no bridges, and you should never try to swim across. Some Bali fast boats also call at more than one Gili, which helps for a split stay. Inter-island timetables change, so check that day’s times at your island’s harbour before checking out.

Indonesia’s tourism ministry tells travellers heading for Gili Meno to [find a boat at Gili Trawangan](https://www.indonesia.travel/gb/en/destination/bali-nusa-tenggara/west-nusa-tenggara/lombok---gili-meno), which reflects how the islands work: every hop between them is by boat. Ask at the harbour ticket office on your island for that day’s public departures. If none fits, a chartered boat costs more but leaves when you want.

If you are arriving from Bali, you may not need a separate hop at all. [Ekajaya’s schedule](https://ekajayafastferry.com/schedule.aspx) shows Padang Bai services stopping at Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air in turn, so you can often book straight to your chosen island. Check this when you book, because some services call only at Trawangan or Air.

Plan moves for the morning and travel light. With no motor vehicles on the islands, bags go between harbour and hotel by cidomo (horse cart), bicycle or on foot. Ask your accommodation whether it meets boats or arranges a cart, and do not book an inter-island hop on the same day as a tight connection back to Bali or a flight.

## When is the best time to visit the Gili Islands?

For drier weather, go in the dry season: BMKG’s 2026 outlook had it beginning first in Nusa Tenggara, which includes Lombok, and peaking in August. Its 2026/27 outlook expects the rains to start late, mostly in November–December, and peak from December to February. Peak holiday periods are crowded, and no month guarantees calm seas.

BMKG, Indonesia’s meteorological agency, publishes seasonal outlooks rather than a fixed calendar. Its [2026 dry-season outlook](https://www.bmkg.go.id/iklim/prediksi-musim/prediksi-musim-kemarau-tahun-2026-di-indonesia) expected the season to begin in Nusa Tenggara and spread gradually to other regions, with most of Indonesia entering it between April and June and peaking in August. Its [2026/27 rainy-season outlook](https://www.bmkg.go.id/iklim/prediksi-musim/prediksi-musim-hujan-2026-2027-di-indonesia), published on 2 October 2026, expects a later and shorter wet season than normal in much of the country, with a very strong El Niño under way.

Weather and sea state are different questions. The [FCDO](https://gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/indonesia/safety-and-security) warns that sea conditions can change rapidly, so a dry, sunny forecast does not guarantee a smooth fast-boat crossing. In any month, keep a buffer day before an international flight; our [fast-boat journey guide](/guides/bali-fast-boats-complete-journey) explains how to use marine forecasts and cancellation terms.

Crowds follow holidays as much as weather. In early September 2026, [RRI reported](https://rri.co.id/en/tourism/2709904/clean-water-crisis-forces-hundreds-of-tourists-to-leave-gili-trawangan-early) a high-density travel period on Gili Trawangan, with more than 3,000 visitor arrivals a day. If your dates fall in a peak holiday period, book rooms and boats earlier and expect busier snorkelling spots.

| Period | BMKG outlook (checked October 2026) | Planning note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Dry season 2026 | Began first in Nusa Tenggara; most of Indonesia entered it April–June; peak in August | Drier weather, but still check the marine forecast before sailing |
| Start of the 2026/27 rains | Later than normal in most areas; mostly November–December 2026 | The changeover varies by week; keep boat days flexible |
| Peak of the rains | December 2026 to February 2027 in most areas | Allow buffer time around boat and flight connections |
| Length of the 2026/27 wet season | Shorter than normal in many areas | Check BMKG’s latest update nearer your trip |

## How do you snorkel with turtles on the Gili Islands responsibly, and what else is there to do?

Snorkelling is the headline activity and swimming with sea turtles is the highlight; watch them without touching, chasing or feeding them. Diving, cycling or walking round the islands and watching the sunset are the other staples. The surrounding waters are a national marine conservation area, and snorkelling or diving there needs an entry ticket.

The waters around Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan form Gili Matra, a national marine conservation area run by Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP). KKP’s [Seapark service](https://seapark.kkp.go.id/?lang=en) says tourism activities such as snorkelling and diving require an entry ticket, which you can buy yourself or through a tour operator, with fees that vary by activity, group size and nationality. Ask your snorkelling or dive operator whether the ticket is included before you pay.

Treat turtles as wild animals. Stay back; do not touch, chase, ride or feed them; never block a turtle’s path to the surface; and do not stand on coral. Choose a snorkelling trip that briefs you on this rather than one that promises close encounters. For diving, the [FCDO](https://gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/indonesia/safety-and-security) warns that dive-school standards are not always as high as in the UK. Choose an established, certified centre, check your instructor’s credentials with their training agency, and ask whether the boat carries oxygen and how divers would reach a hyperbaric chamber. [Smartraveller](https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/destinations/asia/indonesia) also advises checking that your insurance covers diving.

On land, the [tourism ministry](https://www.indonesia.travel/gb/en/travel-ideas/marine/follow-the-action-on-gili-trawangan) says Trawangan takes about an hour to cycle round; Air and Meno are both smaller. It recommends Trawangan’s southern hill and west-coast beach bars for sunsets, with views towards Bali’s Mount Agung. Climbing Mount Rinjani, Lombok’s volcano, is a separate trek on the main island rather than a Gili activity; plan it from our [Lombok guide](/destinations/lombok).

- Buy or confirm the Gili Matra entry ticket before snorkelling or diving.
- Keep your distance from turtles and let them leave on their own terms.
- Avoid snorkelling in boat lanes; stay where your guide or the beach operator says.
- Cycle the loop early or late in the day, and carry water.

## Are there cars on the Gili Islands, and which rules and fees apply?

No. The Gili Islands ban motorised vehicles, so you walk, cycle or take a cidomo, a horse-drawn cart. Snorkelling and diving require a marine-park entry ticket. Bali’s tourist levy is for international visitors to Bali; its official site does not mention Lombok or the Gilis, so check any local charges separately.

Indonesia’s tourism ministry states that the Gili islands [strictly ban motorised vehicles](https://www.indonesia.travel/gb/en/destination/bali-nusa-tenggara/west-nusa-tenggara/lombok---gili-meno), leaving bicycles and cidomo as the ways to get around besides walking. Bicycles are the main way round Trawangan; check the brakes and lights before riding after dark, and walk the bike through soft sand or crowded lanes.

Cidomo are pulled by working horses. If you use one, choose a cart whose horse looks healthy and rested, do not overload it with people or luggage, and walk or cycle short distances instead. Agree the fare before setting off. WARN’s answer to [is horse-carriage riding cruel?](https://worldanimalrescuenetwork.org/answers/is-horse-carriage-riding-cruel/) explains the welfare questions behind them (WARN is the not-for-profit our founder set up; we give it 10% of our profits).

On fees: Bali’s [Love Bali levy](https://lovebali.baliprov.go.id/faq) of IDR 150,000 (checked October 2026) applies to international tourists visiting Bali and, according to its FAQ, is paid once per trip. It is a Bali provincial charge; the Gilis are in West Nusa Tenggara province, and the FAQ does not mention them. If you return to Bali after the Gilis, keep your payment confirmation. The marine-park entry ticket is a separate national charge. If a boat ticket or transfer quote lists extra local or harbour fees, ask what each one covers before paying.

## What should you know about cash, mobile data, water and dress on the Gili Islands?

Carry some rupiah and a backup card rather than relying on one machine, set up mobile data before you sail, and ask your hotel how it handles water supply after a September 2026 outage on Gili Trawangan. Dress modestly away from the beach and respect Ramadan customs if you visit then.

Small islands have little back-up. We have not verified current ATM locations on each Gili, so treat cash machines as convenient rather than guaranteed: bring enough rupiah for a day or two of small purchases, keep a second card separately, and check before arrival whether your accommodation takes cards. For data, an eSIM set up before you leave Bali saves hunting for a shop on arrival; our [eSIM for Indonesia guide](/guides/esim-for-indonesia) compares the options.

Utilities can fail. Gili Trawangan’s clean-water supply broke down in early September 2026, and [RRI reported](https://rri.co.id/en/tourism/2709904/clean-water-crisis-forces-hundreds-of-tourists-to-leave-gili-trawangan-early) that at least 300 tourists checked out early. Before booking, ask how your accommodation stores water and what happens during an outage, and keep some bottled water in your room.

Most people on Lombok and the Gilis are Muslim, and [Smartraveller](https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/destinations/asia/indonesia) notes that standards of dress and behaviour are conservative in many parts of Indonesia. Keep swimwear for the beach and cover up in villages, shops and near mosques. During Ramadan, the [FCDO](https://gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/indonesia/safety-and-security) advises not eating, drinking, smoking or chewing gum in public in the daytime and suggests checking shop and restaurant hours; check the Ramadan dates for your trip.

## Are the Gili Islands safe?

Australia’s Smartraveller advises a high degree of caution across Indonesia. On the Gilis, the main risks are rip currents, boat safety, drugs and drinks: don’t swim between islands, check life jackets, avoid illegal drugs entirely and be wary of spirits because of methanol poisoning. Earthquakes also occur, so learn the tsunami advice.

Water comes first. [Smartraveller](https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/destinations/asia/indonesia) says Australians have drowned in rough seas and strong rip currents at popular beaches, including on the Gili Islands. Swim only when conditions are calm, never try to swim the channels between islands, and keep clear of boat traffic when snorkelling. On boats, the [FCDO](https://gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/indonesia/safety-and-security) warns that vessels can be overloaded and poorly maintained and that children’s life jackets are not always available. Smartraveller adds that some operators may not be licensed and records that 117 passengers and crew were rescued in March 2026 when a boat from Gili Trawangan to Padang Bai sank. Check the life jackets before departure, and do not board a boat that looks overloaded.

Drugs and drink: both governments are blunt. The FCDO says Indonesia has a zero-tolerance policy, with long prison sentences or the death penalty, and that drugs may be offered as free samples in venues; Smartraveller says penalties can include the death penalty. The FCDO also warns of deaths from drinks containing methanol, including counterfeit spirits, and of drink spiking linked to sexual assault in Bali, Lombok and the Gili Islands. Choose sealed drinks from reputable outlets over cheap spirits and cocktails, and never leave a drink unattended.

Earthquakes: Lombok was struck by a series of strong earthquakes in July and August 2018, the largest of magnitude 6.9. The FCDO notes that earthquakes happen regularly in Indonesia and that a tsunami could arrive within minutes of a large one near the coast. Ask your accommodation where the nearest higher ground is. If you feel a strong or long-lasting earthquake by the sea, move inland or uphill and follow local instructions.

## Where should you stay on the Gili Islands?

Stay on Gili Trawangan for nightlife and the widest choice, Gili Air for a balance of food, beaches and quieter nights, and Gili Meno for seclusion. Within each island, choose by distance from the harbour, which side of the island you face and noise. Compare on Booking.com or Agoda, and confirm the property is on your chosen Gili.

By traveller type: solo travellers and groups who want a social scene usually suit Trawangan, which has the most guesthouses, hotels and resorts and regular party nights; light sleepers there should check how far a property is from late-night bars. Couples and families who want calmer evenings tend to prefer Air. Honeymooners and anyone seeking quiet suit Meno, which [Indonesia’s tourism site](https://www.indonesia.travel/gb/en/destination/bali-nusa-tenggara/west-nusa-tenggara/lombok---gili-meno) describes as a romantic, serene retreat.

Practical checks matter more than photos. Confirm the island and the exact location on a map, because a listing labelled Lombok may be on the main island. Check how you get from the harbour (on foot, by cart or with a hotel porter), whether the room has air conditioning, and how the property handles water and power outages. Read the cancellation terms alongside your boat booking, because a cancelled sailing does not automatically cancel the room.

We do not recommend individual hotels here. Compare your shortlist on Booking.com or Agoda, and keep your boat, room and onward flight details together in [My Trip](/my-trip). Before you travel, check entry rules in our [Indonesia visa on arrival guide](/guides/indonesia-bali-visa-on-arrival), and use the wider [Indonesia planning guide](/guides/indonesia-travel-planning) to fit the Gilis into your route.
