# Ha Long Bay Guide: Day Trip vs Cruise, Lan Ha and Safety

Plan Ha Long Bay from Hanoi: day trip or overnight cruise, Ha Long vs Lan Ha vs Bai Tu Long, official fees, storm suspensions and the best months.

## Ha Long Bay day trip or overnight cruise: which should you book?

Book an overnight cruise if you can spare two days. A day trip from Hanoi spends about five hours on the road for a few hours on the water. A two-day, one-night cruise suits most first visits. Choose three days and two nights only if you want a second full day afloat and a slower pace.

Viet Nam’s national tourism site says cruises normally run as [a full day, two days and one night, or three days and two nights](https://vietnam.travel/things-to-do/explore-bay-dragons-halong-bay-cruise), and puts Ha Long [about two and a half hours by road from Hanoi](https://vietnam.travel/places-to-go/northern-vietnam/ha-long). A day trip is therefore roughly five hours of driving for one sightseeing route.

Day sightseeing boats work to fixed hours. The [Ha Long Bay Management Board’s visiting times](https://halongbay.com.vn/c/thoi-gian-on-khach-tham-quan) allow departures from 05:00 and returns by 20:00 between 1 April and 31 October, and from 05:30 to 19:00 in winter (checked October 2026). Overnight trips carry a separate overnight sightseeing fee, shown in the fees section below.

Our [Ha Long Bay cruise verdict](/guides/is-ha-long-bay-cruise-worth-it) covers who should skip the bay altogether. If your Hanoi stay is short, weigh the day against our [Hanoi 3-day itinerary](/guides/hanoi-3-day-itinerary) first.

| Option | Time commitment | Best for | Check before paying |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Day trip | One long day, with about 2.5 hours by road each way | Tight schedules and anyone prone to seasickness | The official route the boat follows and whether the sightseeing fee is included |
| 2 days, 1 night | One night on board | Most first visits: sunset, evening and an early morning on the water | Cabin type, kayak and cave stops, transfer times and the overnight fee |
| 3 days, 2 nights | Two nights on board | Slower trips with a second full day away from the port | Whether day two changes route or repeats day one |

## Ha Long Bay vs Lan Ha Bay vs Bai Tu Long Bay: which is better?

Choose Ha Long Bay for the classic caves, the widest choice of routes and the simplest transfer from Hanoi. Choose Lan Ha Bay, off Cat Ba Island in Hai Phong, for quieter lagoons and beaches. Choose Bai Tu Long Bay, north-east of Ha Long, when avoiding other boats matters most.

Viet Nam’s tourism authority describes [Lan Ha Bay’s pristine lagoons and empty beaches, and Bai Tu Long as the lesser-explored bay](https://vietnam.travel/things-to-do/7-great-ways-see-gulf-tonkin) for travellers who want the water largely to themselves. Ha Long Bay is managed by Quang Ninh province, while Lan Ha’s fees are set by Hai Phong.

Fees differ by authority. Quang Ninh’s [published Ha Long Bay route fees](https://halongbay.com.vn/p/58-muc-phi-tham-quan-vinh-ha-long) apply to Ha Long routes, while Hai Phong’s council set [separate fees for the Cat Ba archipelago bays](https://news.baohaiphong.vn/print/529761.html) from 1 January 2026. If a listing says only “Ha Long cruise”, ask which bay and route the boat actually uses.

Itinerary wording is the best test. The Management Board lists its [official sightseeing routes stop by stop](https://halongbay.com.vn/tours), from Sung Sot Cave and Ti Top Island on route VHL2 to Vung Vieng on VHL4. Match the stops on your quote to a named route, or to Lan Ha and Cat Ba, before booking.

| Bay | Where | Feel | Fees (checked October 2026) | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Ha Long Bay | Quang Ninh; cruise ports at Tuan Chau and Bai Chay | Classic caves and islets, including Sung Sot Cave and Ti Top Island | 200,000–250,000 VND per day route; 500,000–750,000 VND overnight | First visits and day trips |
| Lan Ha Bay | Off Cat Ba Island, Hai Phong | Lagoons and small beaches | 120,000 VND per adult day visit; 400,000–650,000 VND per adult overnight | Kayaking and a quieter feel |
| Bai Tu Long Bay | North-east of Ha Long Bay, Quang Ninh | Lesser-explored water | Depends on the route; ask the operator | Avoiding other boats |

## How do you get from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay?

Go by road. Viet Nam’s tourism authority puts Ha Long about two and a half hours from Hanoi, with cruises boarding at Tuan Chau and Bai Chay. Compare a cruise operator’s shuttle, a bus or a private car on door-to-door time. Do not plan around a seaplane: the scenic service stopped in April 2026.

The [official Ha Long page](https://vietnam.travel/places-to-go/northern-vietnam/ha-long) gives the road time and names Tuan Chau and Bai Chay as the cruise transfer ports. The Management Board’s route pages list departures from [Tuan Chau International Passenger Port and Ha Long International Passenger Port](https://halongbay.com.vn/tours); check which one your boat uses, because pickup times are set from that port.

Seaplanes are no longer an option to plan around. Hai Au Aviation announced that its [Ha Long Bay seaplane sightseeing service would stop from 1 April 2026](https://cafef.vn/dung-vinh-vien-dich-vu-bay-thuy-phi-co-ngam-vinh-ha-long-188260305212303859.chn), so older guides that recommend it are out of date.

For buses and shuttles, our [12Go vs direct booking guide](/guides/12go-vs-direct-booking-southeast-asia) explains when a marketplace helps. Start from our [Hanoi destination guide](/destinations/hanoi), and leave a generous buffer if you must connect with a flight on the day you return.

## How do you choose a safe Ha Long Bay cruise?

Book a licensed boat through a port terminal or an established operator, and insist on a safety briefing and a life jacket for everyone. Ask about the vessel’s registration and crew certification. Avoid touts selling boats outside the ports, and expect sailings to stop when the provincial port authority suspends permits for storms.

The UK Foreign Office advises travellers to [check a boat’s safety record, registration and crew certification, get a full safety briefing and have a life jacket](https://gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/vietnam/safety-and-security), and to consider safety standards carefully before an overnight Halong Bay trip. The Management Board’s [visitor notes](https://halongbay.com.vn/p/16-luu-y-khi-tham-quan-vinh-ha-long) warn against hiring boats from people touting outside the passenger ports and tell visitors to buy tickets for the regulated routes inside the port terminals.

Weather risk is real. On 19 July 2025 the tourist boat Vinh Xanh 58, reported internationally as the [Wonder Sea](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/7/19/over-20-dead-after-tourist-boat-capsizes-in-vietnams-ha-long-bay), capsized in a sudden thunderstorm; Viet Nam’s state broadcaster later [reported 39 deaths and 10 survivors](https://english.vtv.vn/society/search-for-victims-of-quang-ninh-tourist-boat-capsize-concludes-20250818205542355.htm). The next day, Quang Ninh’s inland waterway port authority [suspended tourist boat services](https://news.tuoitre.vn/ha-long-bay-tourist-boats-banned-from-departing-as-typhoon-wipha-nears-103250720163544717.htm) as Typhoon Wipha approached.

Suspensions recur. The Management Board’s site [reported a halt to permits for boats operating and staying overnight](https://halongbay.com.vn/en/p/240-tam-ngung-cap-phep-doi-voi-cac-phuong-tien-thuy-hoat-dong-va-luu-tru-tren-bien) for Storm Wutip in June 2025, and tours in Ha Long and Lan Ha bays were [suspended for Storm Narra from 22 August 2026](https://dtinews.dantri.com.vn/print/20260824095236235.htm). After the 2025 capsizing, Quang Ninh deployed round-the-clock patrol boats in a bay with [more than 500 licensed tourist vessels](https://news.tuoitre.vn/vietnam-province-launches-24-7-vessel-monitoring-system-in-ha-long-bay-after-deadly-accident-103250807170650172.htm).

- Ask for the vessel’s name and registration, then read recent reviews that mention that vessel.
- Confirm there are life jackets for every passenger, including child sizes.
- Listen to the safety briefing and note the exits before the boat sails.
- Read the refund terms for weather suspensions before paying.
- Do not buy from vendors’ small boats that pull alongside; the Management Board advises against it.

## When is the best time to visit Ha Long Bay?

March to April and September to November are usually best, according to Viet Nam’s tourism authority. Winters are cooler and drier, with a light mist that can soften views. Summer is hot and storm-prone, and the typhoon season normally runs from May to November, so keep a spare day for suspensions.

The national tourism site says cruises run all year but that [the best times are March to April and September to November](https://vietnam.travel/things-to-do/explore-bay-dragons-halong-bay-cruise). Its [Ha Long page](https://vietnam.travel/places-to-go/northern-vietnam/ha-long) describes hot, humid summers with a chance of storms, and cool, drier winters with a light mist over the bay.

The UK Foreign Office says Viet Nam’s [typhoon season normally runs from May to November](https://gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/vietnam/safety-and-security), with tropical cyclones possible at other times, and that the rain season in the north runs from June to September. September and October therefore combine a recommended window with storm risk, so book flexible terms then.

For the city side of the trip, see our [best time to visit Hanoi guide](/guides/best-time-to-visit-hanoi).

| Months | What to expect | Planning note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| March–April | One of the two recommended windows | Choose refundable terms in case plans change |
| May–August | Hot and humid; storms possible within typhoon season | Keep a buffer day and watch port notices |
| September–November | The second recommended window, overlapping typhoon season | Check forecasts the week before and ask about suspension refunds |
| December–February | Cooler and drier, with light mist | Pack a warm layer for the deck at night |

## How much is the Ha Long Bay sightseeing fee?

Quang Ninh’s published fees are 200,000–250,000 VND per person for a day sightseeing route and 500,000–750,000 VND for an overnight trip, depending on route and nights (checked October 2026). Lan Ha Bay has separate Hai Phong fees. Ask whether your cruise quote already includes them before comparing prices.

The Management Board’s [fee page](https://halongbay.com.vn/p/58-muc-phi-tham-quan-vinh-ha-long), last updated on 31 March 2025 and checked in October 2026, lists the rates in the table below. Fees for routes VHL6 to VHL8 took effect on 1 May 2025.

For Lan Ha and the other Cat Ba archipelago bays, the Hai Phong People’s Council set [fees from 1 January 2026](https://news.baohaiphong.vn/print/529761.html): 120,000 VND per adult day visit, 60,000 VND for children aged six and above, and 400,000, 600,000 or 650,000 VND per adult for one, two or three nights.

These are per-person charges set by the authorities, so they are a fair line to compare between quotes. A price that leaves them out is not necessarily cheaper once you add them back.

| Ha Long Bay route | Type | Fee per person |
| --- | --- | --- |
| VHL1 and VHL2 | Day visit | 250,000 VND |
| VHL3 and VHL4 | Day visit | 200,000 VND |
| VHL5 | Day visit | 250,000 VND |
| VHL6 | Day visit | 150,000 VND per day |
| VHL7 (exploration cruises covering VHL1–4) | Per trip | 600,000 VND |
| VHL8 (coastal route) | Per trip | 70,000 VND |
| Route 2 | Overnight | 550,000 VND for 1 night; 750,000 VND for 2 nights |
| Routes 3 and 4 | Overnight | 500,000 VND for 1 night; 650,000 VND for 2 nights |

## Is Ha Long Bay a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

Yes. Ha Long Bay was recognised as a World Heritage site in 1994 and 2000, and in 2023 UNESCO added the Cat Ba Archipelago, creating the Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago property. It covers 65,650 hectares and 1,133 islands and islets across Quang Ninh province and Hai Phong city.

The [UNESCO World Heritage Centre listing](https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/672/) describes the property as the most extensive example of marine-invaded tower karst in the world and records the Cat Ba addition as a significant boundary modification in 2023. It also notes the Critically Endangered Cat Ba langur, which is affected by disturbance from tourism.

Heritage status comes with visitor rules. The Management Board asks visitors [not to litter, carry single-use plastics, damage cave formations, buy coral or buy from vendors’ boats](https://halongbay.com.vn/p/16-luu-y-khi-tham-quan-vinh-ha-long). Favour operators that brief guests on those rules.

## Should you stay in Ha Long City or Hanoi before a Ha Long Bay cruise?

Stay in Hanoi if your cruise includes a shuttle pickup: you avoid an extra hotel change and keep the evening in the city. Stay near the port in Ha Long only for an early day boat or a self-arranged transfer. Either way, check that check-out and pickup times fit before booking the room.

Day sightseeing boats may leave from 05:00 in summer under the [Management Board’s published hours](https://halongbay.com.vn/c/thoi-gian-on-khach-tham-quan), so a night near Tuan Chau or Bai Chay makes an early start realistic without a pre-dawn drive from Hanoi.

For a Hanoi base, our [where to stay in Hanoi guide](/guides/where-to-stay-in-hanoi) compares areas. Arriving from abroad? Check the [Vietnam e-visa guide](/guides/vietnam-e-visa-guide) before you fix cruise dates.
