# Indonesia Train Guide: Booking KAI as a Foreigner, Classes and Routes

Book KAI trains with a passport: Access by KAI, name rules, classes from Ekonomi to Compartment, luggage limits, airport trains and Lebaran 2027 sale dates.

## Can foreigners book Indonesian train tickets online?

Yes. Foreign visitors can book KAI intercity trains on booking.kai.id, in the Access by KAI app or at station counters, entering a passport number instead of an Indonesian ID. KAI lists Visa, Mastercard and JCB cards from 27 issuing countries, including the UK, US and Australia, but carry a backup payment method.

KAI’s own [FAQ](https://www.kai.id/faq) says foreign nationals (WNA) must give a passport number when booking, and that online sales cover long- and medium-distance trains on Java and Sumatra. Its card-payment answer lists Visa, Mastercard and JCB cards issued in 27 countries, among them the UK, the US, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Japan, Singapore and Malaysia (checked 16 October 2026). Traveller forums have long reported foreign cards failing in the app, so treat the list as permission to try rather than a guarantee.

The [Access by KAI](https://www.kai.id/layanan/access-by-kai) app handles booking, self check-in, schedule changes and cancellations. [booking.kai.id](https://booking.kai.id/) is the browser alternative, and its timetable search works without logging in. Both are in Indonesian, but the search fields are simple: origin, destination, date, adults and infants under three. The FAQ also lists local options, such as QRIS, e-wallets, virtual accounts and payment at Alfamart or Indomaret counters, which become useful once you are in Indonesia.

If your card is declined or the app will not accept your details, buy through an official sales partner such as an online travel agent, or at a station ticket counter with your passport. KAI says tickets bought through official partners can still be rescheduled in Access, which matters if plans change. Compare the partner’s total with KAI’s fare first, as the next section shows.

## Should you book on Access by KAI, kai.id or an online travel agent?

Both work. Access by KAI and kai.id show every train and sub-class fare from 45 days ahead with no reseller mark-up, but some foreign cards are declined. An agent such as 12Go gives an English checkout and takes most foreign cards at a higher total: our same-day spot check found 12Go 16–18% dearer.

On 16 October 2026 we compared identical departures for Monday 19 October. [booking.kai.id](https://booking.kai.id/) showed Executive (sub-class AA) at Rp600,000 on the Manahan and Rp680,000 on the Argo Dwipangga from Gambir to Yogyakarta, and Rp150,000 on the 09:15 Parahyangan to Bandung. 12Go listed the same trains at IDR 699,426, IDR 791,276 and IDR 177,268, taxes included. KAI’s figure is the search-page fare, so check whether a payment-method charge appears at checkout.

KAI prices one train in several sub-classes (AA, AB, AC and AD in Executive), and the cheaper ones sell first, so the same seat type can cost more a week later. Booking direct also keeps changes simple: KAI lets you reschedule or cancel in Access up to two hours before departure for a 25% fee, as its [FAQ](https://www.kai.id/faq) explains. An agent may add its own rules on top.

Agents earn their margin for first-timers: an English checkout, familiar card processing and customer service in your time zone. If you use one, enter the passport name and number exactly, then add the booking code to Access by KAI so you can use the e-boarding pass. Trip.com’s train hub did not list Indonesian rail when we checked, so it is the tool for flights when a train is too slow.

| Channel | What you get | Payment notes | Watch out for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Access by KAI app | Every KAI train, seat map, e-boarding pass and self-service changes | Visa, Mastercard and JCB from 27 listed countries; QRIS, e-wallets and virtual accounts | Changes and cancellations close two hours before departure, with a 25% fee |
| booking.kai.id | The same inventory in a browser; search works without logging in | As above; pay before the on-screen deadline | Indonesian-language interface |
| Station ticket counter | Face-to-face help | Bring your passport | Popular trains can sell out well before the day |
| Online travel agent, for example 12Go | English checkout and familiar card processing | Price shown with taxes included | Totals 16–18% above KAI’s fare in our 16 October 2026 check |

## What ID do you need for an Indonesian train, and must the name match?

Use your passport. KAI requires foreign passengers to enter a passport number, and staff check that the ticket matches your ID at the boarding gate. Type every name exactly as printed in the passport: KAI says it cannot correct a misspelt name, or change it to another person, after booking.

KAI’s [FAQ](https://www.kai.id/faq) asks Indonesians over 17 for their KTP number and foreign nationals for a passport number. It defines boarding as the check that the details on the ticket match the passenger, and it says names cannot be corrected or swapped to someone else after purchase, so double-check spelling, middle names and the order of names before you pay.

One booking holds up to four passengers, excluding infants, and Access by KAI stores up to 25 passenger profiles, which helps if you book several legs. The app’s “transfer ticket” feature only moves a ticket between the Access accounts of passengers already named on that booking; it is not a way to resell or reassign a seat.

Carry the passport you booked with, not a photocopy, because the gate check compares the original with the boarding pass. Children travelling on their own passports need their own passport numbers in the booking. If you renew your passport between booking and travel, ask KAI customer service (121) before the trip rather than at the gate.

## What are the train classes in Indonesia?

KAI now sells Ekonomi, Eksekutif and premium products: Panoramic, Luxury, Priority and Compartment (Suite) carriages on selected trains. Business class (Bisnis) has gone from regular Java services. Executive suits most visitors on long daytime runs; Ekonomi is far cheaper; Luxury and Compartment make most sense overnight.

KAI’s [intercity page](https://www.kai.id/layanan/angkutan-penumpang/angkutan-antar-kota) lists Ekonomi, Eksekutif, Panoramic, Luxury and Compartment Suite as its long-distance products, and the booking site also shows Priority carriages on some trains, such as a Parahyangan departure we found on 16 October 2026. Kontan reported on [21 July 2025](https://industri.kontan.co.id/news/kai-umumkan-penghapusan-kereta-kelas-bisnis-di-pulau-jawa-apa-penggantinya) that KAI had withdrawn business class on Java, leaving Executive, commercial Economy and subsidised (PSO) Economy, with Bisnis kept only as a possible extra at holidays.

Within each class, fares step up by sub-class letters, so two Executive seats on the same train can differ by tens of thousands of rupiah. Ekonomi covers both subsidised trains with very low fares and commercial trains. Panoramic cars have larger windows and a sunroof, according to KAI. Compartment Suite cars, launched in October 2023, have 16 private compartments per carriage ([Bisnis.com, 4 October 2023](https://ekonomi.bisnis.com/read/20231004/98/1700957/kenyamanan-sekelas-pesawat-ini-kelebihan-layanan-ka-suite-class)).

For a six-hour daytime run such as Jakarta–Yogyakarta, Executive is the sensible default. Ekonomi suits short hops and tight budgets. Overnight, Luxury or Compartment can replace a hotel night, so compare their fare with a room plus an Executive seat. Panoramic cars appear on routes such as Gambir–Bandung and Bandung–Surabaya and are a sightseeing upgrade by day.

| Class | What you get | Example fare on booking.kai.id (checked October 2026) | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Ekonomi (subsidised PSO) | Government-subsidised fares on selected trains | Rp56,000 Probowangi, Surabaya Gubeng–Ketapang | Short hops and tight budgets |
| Ekonomi (commercial) | Standard seats on many mixed-class trains | Rp100,000 Parahyangan, Gambir–Bandung | Daytime trips of a few hours |
| Eksekutif | Reclining seats, more legroom, power sockets and fold-down tables | Rp150,000 Gambir–Bandung; Rp670,000 Gambir–Yogyakarta | Most long-distance trips |
| Panoramic | Larger windows and a sunroof | Rp355,000–450,000 Gambir–Bandung | Scenic daytime runs |
| Priority | Premium carriage on selected trains | Rp340,000–352,000 Parahyangan, Gambir–Bandung | A premium seat on a short route |
| Luxury | Exclusive interior and premium service | Rp950,000 Taksaka Luxury, Gambir–Yogyakarta | Overnight or special trips |
| Compartment Suite | Private compartments; KAI’s top class | Rp1,700,000–2,150,000 on the Bima, Argo Semeru and Anggrek | Overnight long hauls |

## Which trains run on Indonesia’s most popular routes, and how long do they take?

On KAI’s own search for Tuesday 10 November 2026, Jakarta–Bandung took about three hours, Jakarta–Yogyakarta six to seven and a half, Jakarta–Surabaya about eight to ten, Yogyakarta–Surabaya about four, Surabaya–Banyuwangi six to seven and Bandung–Yogyakarta six to seven. Timetables change, so search your date.

The table summarises what [booking.kai.id](https://booking.kai.id/) showed when we searched each pair on 16 October 2026 for Tuesday 10 November. Fares are the lowest sub-class shown for that date and move with demand. Jakarta–Bandung also has the Whoosh high-speed train from Halim, which we cover in [Jakarta to Bandung by Whoosh](/guides/jakarta-to-bandung-whoosh), and our [Jakarta to Yogyakarta guide](/guides/jakarta-to-yogyakarta) compares the train with flying.

Two renamed trains catch people out. The Argo Parahyangan became the Parahyangan on 1 February 2025, with Executive and Economy cars ([Kompas TV, 23 January 2025](https://www.kompas.tv/lifestyle/568925/mulai-1-februari-nama-ka-argo-parahyangan-tak-ada-lagi-ini-gantinya)), and the Argo Bromo Anggrek was renamed Anggrek from 9 May 2026, weeks after it was involved in a fatal accident at Bekasi Timur on 27 April ([Suara Surabaya, 5 May 2026](https://www.suarasurabaya.net/?p=895491)). Blog timetables using the old names are out of date.

For the Bali ferry, the station you want is Ketapang: KAI says it is about 100 metres from Ketapang port, where ferries cross to Bali ([Republika, 22 September 2025](https://ekonomi.republika.co.id/berita/t2zgmd490/stasiun-ketapang-jadi-gerbang-konektivitas-di-ujung-timur-pulau-jawa)). The Blambangan Ekspres even runs through from Pasar Senen in Jakarta to Ketapang in 16 hours 30 minutes. Save the station map links below to your phone.

## How much luggage can you take on a KAI train?

KAI lets each passenger bring up to 20 kg free, within 100 litres (maximum 70 × 48 × 30 cm) and no more than four pieces. Larger loads up to 40 kg or 200 litres can travel for an excess fee or an extra seat. Surfboards, animals and flammable items are banned.

The figures come from KAI’s [FAQ](https://www.kai.id/faq), checked 16 October 2026: 20 kg and 100 dm³, with maximum dimensions of 70 × 48 × 30 cm and up to four items, carried free. Above that, KAI charges Rp10,000 per kg in Executive, Rp6,000 in Business and Rp2,000 in Economy, up to a ceiling of 40 kg or 200 dm³ (70 × 48 × 60 cm); alternatively, you can buy an extra seat.

KAI also lists the personal items passengers may carry: a handbag, laptop bag or backpack up to 50 × 35 × 25 cm, a folding bicycle (up to 20 kg, with wheels no larger than 22 inches), and manual wheelchairs, pushchairs and walking aids. Its banned list includes animals, firearms and sharp weapons, flammable or explosive items, strong-smelling goods and, notably for Bali-bound travellers, surfboards.

Measure a large suitcase before you travel: 70 × 48 × 30 cm is smaller than many checked-in cases, although the paid allowance of 70 × 48 × 60 cm takes many larger cases. If you are connecting to a shuttle van, check its limit too, because several Jakarta–Bandung operators allow only a cabin-size case, as our [shuttle guide](/guides/jakarta-to-bandung-shuttle) shows.

## How does boarding work, and can foreigners use the face-recognition gates?

Show your passport and a boarding pass at the gate, which closes five minutes before departure. Print the pass at a station check-in machine from seven days ahead, or use the Access by KAI e-boarding pass from two hours before. Face-recognition gates rely on Indonesian e-KTP registration, so foreign visitors use the staffed lane.

KAI’s [FAQ](https://www.kai.id/faq) says boarding, the check of ticket and identity, closes at the latest five minutes before departure, or earlier if a station sets its own limit. Check-in at a station’s CIC machine opens seven days before departure; in the final 24 hours you can only check in at your departure station or a station on your route. An e-boarding pass appears in Access by KAI from two hours before departure, including for tickets bought through official partners once you add the booking code to My Trips.

Do not rely on a screenshot. KAI states that a screenshot of an e-ticket is not valid for boarding, and passengers who cannot show the ticket in the app are sent to the counter or customer service to be verified with original ID. Keep your passport in a pocket rather than a packed bag, because staff compare it with the name on the boarding pass.

Face recognition is now widespread: Metro TV reported on [23 July 2026](https://www.metrotvnews.com/read/kBVCM4Xp-face-recognition-tersedia-di-22-stasiun-simak-syarat-dan-cara-registrasinya) that 22 long-distance stations use it, and that passengers without a usable e-KTP must use the manual lane. Registration is done once with an e-KTP and fingerprint at a station, or in the app with NIK and KTP photo details ([Kompas TV](https://www.kompas.tv/lifestyle/568093/diterapkan-di-21-stasiun-ini-cara-daftar-face-recognition-untuk-boarding-dengan-access-by-kai)). Neither source describes a passport route, so allow time for the staffed gate.

## Do children pay on Indonesian trains, and can you change or cancel a ticket?

Children under three travel free on an adult’s lap, one per adult; from three, or if an infant takes a seat, they pay the adult fare. You can reschedule or cancel up to two hours before departure for a 25% fee, but you cannot correct a misspelt passenger name.

KAI defines an infant as under three on the day of travel. The first infant per adult who does not take a seat travels free; a second infant with the same adult, or any infant given a seat, pays the full adult fare, and a booking cannot hold more infants than adults. Add infants at the search stage on [booking.kai.id](https://booking.kai.id/) or in Access; KAI says a forgotten infant ticket can be added at a station counter at least one hour before departure ([FAQ](https://www.kai.id/faq)).

There is no general child discount from age three. KAI does offer a 20% reduction for passengers aged 60 and over, but only after registering in person at a station customer-service desk at least two days before travel. Seats can be chosen while they last, so book early if a family needs to sit together.

A schedule change costs 25% of the original fare plus any fare difference, and moving to a cheaper ticket does not refund the gap. Cancellations also cost 25%. In Access, refunds go to a participating Indonesian bank or e-wallet account in a passenger’s name within about seven days; visitors without one can cancel at a station ticket counter, and KAI pays cash refunds seven days later at designated stations. Airport-train tickets cannot be changed or refunded at all.

## How do the airport trains at Jakarta (CGK), Yogyakarta (YIA) and Medan (KNO) work?

All three airports have rail links. Jakarta’s Commuter Line Basoetta, run by KAI Commuter, reaches BNI City in about 39 minutes and Manggarai in 46. Yogyakarta’s KA Bandara YIA runs to Yogyakarta station, with a non-stop Xpress. Medan’s KA Srilelawangsa links Kualanamu with Medan. Tickets cannot be changed or refunded.

Many guides still call all three “Railink”, but the Soekarno–Hatta line passed from PT Railink to KAI Commuter in a handover due to finish in March 2023 ([Bisnis.com](https://ekonomi.bisnis.com/read/20230304/98/1633947/kci-ambil-alih-ka-bandara-dari-railink-transisi-rampung-maret-2023)). Now called Commuter Line Basoetta, it serves Bandara Soekarno-Hatta, Batu Ceper, Rawa Buaya, Duri, BNI City and Manggarai ([Republika, 11 June 2026](https://news.republika.co.id/berita/tgfm8t4730000/penumpang-commuter-line-bandara-soetta-naik-1478-persen-tembus-1-juta-orang)). Since 1 July 2025 the run takes 39 minutes to BNI City and 46 minutes to Manggarai ([Detik](https://finance.detik.com/infrastruktur/d-7990174/naik-kereta-bandara-dari-manggarai-ke-soetta-makin-cepat-cuma-46-menit)).

PT Railink, trading as KAI Bandara, runs the other two, which KAI lists on its [airport-train page](https://www.kai.id/layanan/angkutan-penumpang/kereta-bandara). KA Bandara YIA links Yogyakarta station with the airport, stopping at Wates (Reguler) or running non-stop (Xpress). Railink told RRI on [1 August 2026](https://rri.co.id/bandung/bisnis/2619707/kai-bandara-hadirkan-jadwal-perjalanan-yang-semakin-fleksibel) that trains leave Yogyakarta from 04:20 to 20:12 and YIA from 05:16 to 21:30. In Medan, KA Srilelawangsa runs 24 trips a day on the Medan–Araskabu–Kualanamu route ([RRI, 2 August 2026](https://rri.co.id/bandung/bisnis/2619723/kai-bandara-perkuat-mobilitas-masyarakat-bertarif-mulai-rp5000)).

Access by KAI sells airport-train tickets from seven days ahead until an hour before departure, but KAI’s FAQ lists only e-wallets, QRIS and KAIPay for them, not cards. At Soekarno–Hatta, station vending machines sell same-day tickets and accept QRIS, debit and credit cards, Antara reported ([31 October 2024](https://www.antaranews.com/berita/4434169/simak-harga-dan-cara-naik-commuter-line-basoetta)). ## When should you book trains for Lebaran and other peak dates?

Book the moment sales open. KAI releases long-distance seats 45 days ahead (H-45), and holiday trains fill fast. Idul Fitri 2027 falls on 10–11 March, with collective leave on 9, 12 and 15 March, so trains on 3–9 March open from about 17–23 January 2027.

KAI’s [FAQ](https://www.kai.id/faq) sets the window: commercial and subsidised long- and medium-distance tickets go on sale 45 days before departure and stay on sale until 30 minutes before. For Lebaran 2026, sales opened on 25 January for 11 March departures and then continued day by day ([Detik, 24 January 2026](https://finance.detik.com/berita-ekonomi-bisnis/d-8322603/tiket-kereta-buat-mudik-lebaran-bisa-dibeli-mulai-besok)). Search exactly 45 days before your travel date.

The government’s joint decree, published on [15 September 2026](https://setneg.go.id/baca/index/inilah_skb_3_menteri_libur_nasional_dan_cuti_bersama_2027), lists Idul Fitri 1448 H as Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 March 2027, with collective leave on Tuesday 9, Friday 12 and Monday 15 March. The Ministry of Religious Affairs confirms the exact date nearer the time. Demand peaks in the days just before Lebaran and on the return; Christmas, New Year and long weekends are busy too.

If you miss out, look at less obvious departures: Pasar Senen trains instead of Gambir, a night train, a day earlier or later, or KAI’s connecting-train search, which pairs two trains with a gap of one to 24 hours. Avoid resale tickets offered on social media, because the passenger name cannot be changed. Road shuttles tighten their rules at peak too: Cititrans made all tickets for 13–29 March 2026 final.

| If you want to travel on | Day | Sales open (H-45) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 3 March 2027 | Wednesday | Sunday 17 January 2027 |
| 5 March 2027 | Friday | Tuesday 19 January 2027 |
| 8 March 2027 | Monday | Friday 22 January 2027 |
| 9 March 2027 (collective leave) | Tuesday | Saturday 23 January 2027 |
| 14 March 2027 (return) | Sunday | Thursday 28 January 2027 |
| 16 March 2027 (return) | Tuesday | Saturday 30 January 2027 |
| 24 December 2026 | Thursday | Monday 9 November 2026 |
