## Can you see Java in 7 days by train?

Yes, if you keep to one rail spine: Jakarta, Bandung and Yogyakarta, with four nights in Yogyakarta for Borobudur, Prambanan and the city. Book trains first, then a Borobudur structure ticket, then hotels. Surabaya and Mount Bromo work as an extension, not as part of the seven days.

This is a desk-researched suggested route, not a journey we have personally travelled. It uses [Whoosh](https://kcic.co.id/) for the Jakarta–Bandung leg and [KAI](https://www.kai.id/) conventional trains for the rest. Travel times below come from the operators or from credible published timetables, and they change; recheck every train in Access by KAI or the Whoosh app before you pay.

The plan gives you one night in Jakarta, one in Bandung and four in Yogyakarta, then a final travel day. That shape matters: the Bandung–Yogyakarta and Yogyakarta–Jakarta trains each take most of a day, so changing base every night would turn the week into a string of station transfers. For wider context, start with the [Indonesia route planner](/guides/indonesia-travel-planning) and the [Indonesia train guide](/guides/indonesia-train-guide).

Day 4 must not fall on a Monday, because Borobudur’s temple structure is closed to visitors that day. If your arrival date makes day 4 a Monday, swap days 4 and 6 so the city day comes first.

| Day | Base (night) | Main sight | Transport | Travel time |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Jakarta | Arrival; Kota Tua or Monas if time allows | CGK airport train or taxi | About 40 min by airport train to BNI City (Bisnis, Sept 2025); road time varies |
| 2 | Bandung | Braga and Asia Afrika | Whoosh Halim–Padalarang plus feeder, or KAI from Gambir | 36–44 min high-speed run (KCIC) plus feeder; about 3 h 10 min by conventional train (Seat61) |
| 3 | Yogyakarta | Malioboro in the evening | KAI Bandung–Yogyakarta | About 6–7 h on the examples Seat61 lists |
| 4 | Yogyakarta | Borobudur (not a Monday) | Driver, tour or app ride | About 1–1.5 h each way by road (indonesia.travel) |
| 5 | Yogyakarta | Prambanan | Car, Trans Jogja or KRL to Brambanan | About 30–40 min by car (indonesia.travel) |
| 6 | Yogyakarta | Kraton, Taman Sari, Malioboro | Walking and short rides | Short local hops |
| 7 | Depart | Return to Jakarta or continue east | KAI to Gambir, or KAI to Surabaya Gubeng | About 6 h to Gambir (KAI timetable via detik; Seat61); under 4 h to Surabaya (Seat61) |

## What should you do on day 1 in Jakarta?

Treat day 1 as arrival and recovery, not sightseeing. Get from Soekarno–Hatta to a hotel near the station you will leave from on day 2, then add Kota Tua or Monas only if you land early. A late international arrival followed by a dawn train is the quickest way to break this plan.

Soekarno–Hatta (CGK) is the main international gateway. Its airport rail link runs to BNI City at Dukuh Atas and on to Manggarai; [Bisnis.com reported in September 2025](https://ekonomi.bisnis.com/read/20250924/98/1914389/cek-jadwal-kereta-bandara-dari-soekarno-hatta-operasional-pukul-0557-2257-wib) a journey of about 40 minutes to BNI City and departures from the airport between 05:57 and 22:57. Check [Railink](https://www.railink.co.id/) for your date, and use our [airport-to-hotel guide](/guides/jakarta-airport-to-hotel) to compare the train with taxis and transfers.

Decide now whether day 2 is Whoosh from Halim or a conventional KAI train from Gambir, then sleep where that station is easy to reach. Gambir is in central Jakarta beside Monas; Halim is in the east of the city. [Where to stay in Jakarta](/guides/where-to-stay-in-jakarta) compares areas by MRT, KRL and TransJakarta access, and the [Jakarta guide](/destinations/jakarta) covers sights for any spare hours.

- Open in Google Maps: [Soekarno–Hatta Airport](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Soekarno-Hatta%20International%20Airport%2C%20Tangerang), [BNI City Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=BNI%20City%20Station%2C%20Jakarta), [Gambir Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Gambir%20Station%2C%20Jakarta), [Kota Tua](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Kota%20Tua%2C%20Jakarta), [Monas](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Monas%2C%20Jakarta).

## Should you take Whoosh or a KAI train to Bandung on day 2?

Take Whoosh if your Jakarta hotel is near Halim and you are happy to change to the Padalarang feeder; take a conventional KAI train from Gambir if you want to arrive at Bandung station without a change. Either way, spend the afternoon around Braga and Asia Afrika rather than in the hills.

KCIC’s website quotes [36 to 44 minutes](https://kcic.co.id/) for the high-speed run between Jakarta and Bandung, but that is only the main segment. For central Bandung you normally change at Padalarang to the feeder train; our [Whoosh door-to-door guide](/guides/jakarta-to-bandung-whoosh) explains the station chain and includes a cost calculator. [Seat61](https://www.seat61.com/Indonesia.htm), updated 17 July 2026, puts the conventional Jakarta–Bandung train at about 3 hours 10 minutes.

Keep the Bandung afternoon short and central, because day 3 starts with a long train. The [Bandung three-day itinerary](/guides/bandung-3-day-itinerary-without-car) has a walking cluster around Braga and Asia Afrika that fits half a day, and [where to stay in Bandung](/guides/where-to-stay-in-bandung) explains why a central base suits an onward rail trip better than Lembang. The [Bandung guide](/destinations/bandung) covers the rest of the city.

## How long is the train from Bandung to Yogyakarta?

Plan on most of the day. Seat61’s July 2026 timetable summary shows morning departures from Bandung reaching Yogyakarta in roughly six to seven hours. Book a morning train so you arrive in daylight, sleep near Yogyakarta station and keep the evening for Malioboro rather than a temple.

[Seat61’s examples](https://www.seat61.com/Indonesia.htm) include Argo Wilis, about 5 hours 50 minutes and executive class only, and Lodaya, about 6 hours 40 minutes. Trains, classes and times change with each KAI timetable, so search your exact date in Access by KAI or on [KAI’s site](https://www.kai.id/). Check which Yogyakarta station appears: Yogyakarta, often called Tugu, is the main station beside Malioboro, while Lempuyangan is a secondary station to the east.

A long rail day is easier with a hotel that accepts late check-in and sits a short ride from the station. If you buy through a marketplace rather than KAI directly, compare the final price, fees and the ticket format before paying. The [Yogyakarta guide](/destinations/yogyakarta) and our [Jakarta–Yogyakarta guide](/guides/jakarta-to-yogyakarta) cover the city end of the trip.

- Open in Google Maps: [Yogyakarta (Tugu) Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Stasiun%20Yogyakarta%20Tugu%2C%20Yogyakarta), [Lempuyangan Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Stasiun%20Lempuyangan%2C%20Yogyakarta), [Malioboro](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Jalan%20Malioboro%2C%20Yogyakarta).

## How do you visit Borobudur on day 4?

Go on a Tuesday-to-Sunday date with a Borobudur Temple Structure ticket booked through the official InJourney channel. The structure is closed to visitors on Mondays, climbing runs in limited sessions with a guide and upanat sandals, and the temple is about 40 km from Yogyakarta, or 1–1.5 hours by road.

Indonesia’s tourism site says Borobudur is [about 40 km from Yogyakarta](https://www.indonesia.travel/id-id/travel-ideas/heritage/candi-borobudur/), lists the grounds as open 06:30–17:30 daily subject to ceremonies and conservation work, and says that on Mondays visitors can reach only the grounds and gardens, not the structure. The [official ticket site](https://ticket.injourneydestination.id/en/) sells a Temple Structure ticket, which includes the courtyard, separately from a Temple Ground ticket that does not include the climb.

When the climbing system began, [Republika reported in July 2023](https://ekonomi.republika.co.id/berita/rxfh92457/pembatasan-di-candi-borobudur-twc-hanya-ada-delapan-sesi-kunjungan-per-hari) eight sessions a day of roughly 150 people each, with a compulsory guide and upanat sandals. Treat those figures as background and pick a session in the live booking flow. Our [Borobudur temple guide](/guides/borobudur-temple-guide) covers ticket types and sunrise options in more depth.

Compare a private driver, a tour and app rides, and agree the return in advance rather than assuming a ride back from Magelang will be easy to find. If you prefer a guided day, GetYourGuide lists Borobudur tours; check whether a Temple Structure ticket is included or whether you must book it yourself.

- Open in Google Maps: [Borobudur Temple](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Borobudur%20Temple%2C%20Magelang).

## How do you fit Prambanan into day 5?

Make Prambanan a half-day. It is about 17 km east of central Yogyakarta, roughly 30–40 minutes by car, and reachable on the KRL commuter train to Brambanan station. Buy entry on the official InJourney site, then add Ratu Boko or the Ramayana Ballet only if the dates suit you.

The [official tourism page](https://www.indonesia.travel/id-id/travel-ideas/heritage/candi-prambanan/) gives the 17 km distance and the 30–40 minute drive, and mentions Trans Jogja buses to a stop near the entrance. [Tirto](https://tirto.id/rute-menuju-venue-prambanan-jazz-2023-naik-bus-dan-kereta-gMLK) puts Brambanan station about 1.3 km from the temple. For a rail-only day, check the Yogyakarta line timetable with [KAI Commuter](https://commuterline.id/) before you set out.

The [same ticket site](https://ticket.injourneydestination.id/en/) sells Ramayana Ballet performances at Prambanan on set evenings that vary by season. If you book one, keep the afternoon light and arrange your ride back to the hotel after dark in advance. Prambanan is a Hindu temple compound: dress respectfully and follow site instructions about restricted areas.

- Open in Google Maps: [Prambanan Temple](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Prambanan%20Temple%2C%20Sleman%2C%20Yogyakarta), [Brambanan Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Stasiun%20Brambanan%2C%20Klaten).

## What should days 6 and 7 look like?

Use day 6 for Yogyakarta itself: the Kraton, Taman Sari and Malioboro, with a rest during the afternoon heat. On day 7, take a KAI train back to Jakarta, about six hours on the fastest services, or fly from Yogyakarta International Airport if your onward ticket allows.

The Kraton keeps its own visiting hours and closes for ceremonies, so check [the palace’s website](https://www.kratonjogja.id/) before fixing a morning. Taman Sari and Malioboro are close enough to combine with short rides. Keep this day flexible: it is also your buffer if a Borobudur session or the weather forced a change earlier in the week.

KAI’s February 2025 timetable, [reported by detik](https://finance.detik.com/infrastruktur/d-7740910/ini-jadwal-kereta-per-februari-sesuai-gapeka-2025), showed Taksaka trains from Gambir reaching Yogyakarta in just over six hours; check the return direction for your date. Do not plan an international flight from CGK the same evening without a wide margin; a final night in Jakarta is safer. [Harian Jogja](https://jogjapolitan.harianjogja.com/read/2025/05/05/510/1212467/jadwal-kereta-bandara-xpress-hari-ini-senin-5-mei-2025-berangkat-dari-stasiun-tugu-wates-dan-yia) publishes the airport train timetable between Yogyakarta station and YIA.

- Open in Google Maps: [Kraton Yogyakarta](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Kraton%20Yogyakarta), [Taman Sari](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Taman%20Sari%2C%20Yogyakarta), [Yogyakarta International Airport](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Yogyakarta%20International%20Airport%2C%20Kulon%20Progo).

## Can you extend the route to Surabaya and Mount Bromo?

Yes, but add two or three days rather than squeezing Bromo into the week. Take KAI from Yogyakarta to Surabaya Gubeng, continue towards Probolinggo and book Bromo entry online in advance. Check the volcano’s alert level and any park closure before travelling, then fly home from Surabaya.

[Seat61](https://www.seat61.com/Indonesia.htm) lists Yogyakarta–Surabaya Gubeng trains of just under four hours and describes Probolinggo, under two hours from Gubeng, as the usual railhead for Bromo. Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park sells entry through its [online booking site](https://booking.bromotenggersemeru.org/), and the [park’s main site](https://bromotenggersemeru.org/) says visitors must register online before entering the Bromo area. The [Surabaya guide](/destinations/surabaya) covers the city’s gateway role.

In August 2026 the park closed the Bromo area after a forest fire; [Bernama reported](https://majujohor.bernama.com/news-en.php?id=2596548) that tourism resumed on 20 August with a daily cap of 2,752 visitors. The [UK FCDO](https://gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/indonesia/safety-and-security) warns that volcanoes can erupt without warning and that exclusion zones can change at short notice. Check the current alert level on [MAGMA Indonesia](https://magma.esdm.go.id/) and follow local instructions.

- Open in Google Maps: [Surabaya Gubeng Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Stasiun%20Surabaya%20Gubeng%2C%20Surabaya), [Probolinggo Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Stasiun%20Probolinggo%2C%20Probolinggo), [Mount Bromo](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Mount%20Bromo%2C%20East%20Java).

## What should you book first, and how do you book the trains?

Book in this order: trains first, Borobudur structure tickets second, hotels third. The trains fix your dates, the Borobudur session fixes your Yogyakarta days, and refundable hotels can then be fitted around both. Use the KAI and KCIC official channels, or compare a marketplace such as 12Go where it sells your train.

Whoosh sells through [ticket.kcic.co.id](https://ticket.kcic.co.id/) and its app; conventional trains through [KAI](https://www.kai.id/) and Access by KAI. [KAI’s FAQ](https://www.kai.id/faq) lists Visa, Mastercard and JCB cards from 27 issuing countries, but some foreign cards are still declined, which is why many visitors book through resellers such as 12Go. Whichever channel you use, enter passport details exactly as requested and save the issued ticket, not only the payment receipt.

Next, book the Borobudur Temple Structure ticket on the [official InJourney site](https://ticket.injourneydestination.id/en/) for a day that is not a Monday. Sessions are limited, and the site lists its sunrise and sunset products at 100 people a day. Then book hotels with free cancellation until you hold both. Recheck train times a week before travel, because KAI announces changes and cancellations through its own channels.

Demand rises around long weekends and public holidays: in June 2026 KCIC [added extra Whoosh trips](https://ekonomi.republika.co.id/berita/tfy02n490/laris-manis-kcic-tambah-enam-perjalanan-whoosh-saat-puncak-arus-balik-libur-panjang) for a holiday return peak. If your week overlaps Idul Fitri or Indonesian school holidays, book as soon as sales open.

## Where should you stay each night of the Java trip?

Stay near your next departure station each time: Gambir or Halim in Jakarta depending on your day 2 train, central Bandung near Bandung station or Braga, and Yogyakarta near Malioboro or the main station for four nights. One fixed Yogyakarta base saves packing and keeps the temple days simple.

For Jakarta, use [where to stay in Jakarta](/guides/where-to-stay-in-jakarta) with the [Jakarta hotel comparison](/hotels/jakarta). For Bandung, [where to stay in Bandung](/guides/where-to-stay-in-bandung) compares Braga, Dago and Lembang; on this route, central is the practical choice. For Yogyakarta, the [Yogyakarta hotel comparison](/hotels/yogyakarta) helps you check a property’s position against the station and Malioboro.

Compare the same room type, breakfast, taxes and cancellation date on each site. Ask for late check-in on day 3 and luggage storage on day 7. The links below open provider searches, not hotels we have inspected, and we do not recommend individual properties.

| Night | Area | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Near Gambir or Halim, Jakarta | Short trip to your day 2 train |
| 2 | Central Bandung or Braga | Walkable afternoon; short ride to Bandung station |
| 3–6 | Malioboro or near Yogyakarta station | One base for Borobudur, Prambanan and the city |

## Who is this itinerary for, and what do you cut with only 5 days?

It suits first-time visitors who prefer heritage, food and train travel to beaches. With five days, drop the Bandung night: take a Gambir–Yogyakarta train on day 2, see Borobudur and Prambanan on days 3 and 4, and return on day 5. You lose Bandung, not the temples.

The route is harder if you need step-free access throughout: station changes, footbridges and Borobudur’s steep stone stairs all add effort, so contact operators about assistance before booking. Families with young children may prefer fewer moves and a longer stay in Yogyakarta. If beaches matter, our [Bali to Komodo itinerary](/guides/bali-komodo-flores-10-day-itinerary) suits you better.

Other cuts work too: keep Bandung but drop the Yogyakarta city day, or skip Jakarta sightseeing if you land late. Avoid cutting the gap between Borobudur and your departure, because a missed climbing session cannot always be moved. Save train and ticket deadlines in [My Trip](/my-trip/) so they sit in one place.
