# Koh Samui vs Koh Phangan vs Koh Tao: Which Gulf Island?

Koh Samui vs Koh Phangan vs Koh Tao: compare vibe, beaches and diving, flights and ferries, Gulf weather, Full Moon Party safety and dive schools.

## Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao: which island should you choose?

Choose Koh Samui for flights straight to the island, the widest choice of resorts and the easiest family logistics. Choose Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party, or for a slower stay in a quieter bay away from Haad Rin. Choose Koh Tao if diving or learning to dive is the point of the trip.

All three sit in the Gulf of Thailand off Surat Thani province, linked by boats in a chain. [TAT describes Ko Samui](https://www.tourismthailand.org/Destinations/Provinces/Ko-Samui/360) as Thailand’s third-largest island, its [Ko Pha-ngan page](https://www.tourismthailand.org/destinations/provinces/ko-pha-ngan/358) puts Phangan about 15 km north of Samui and calls the monthly full moon party its best-known draw, and a [2026 TAT and PADI announcement](https://www.tatnews.org/2026/02/tat-boosts-dive-tourism-through-padi-partnership-under-healing-is-the-new-luxury-campaign/) calls Koh Tao one of Thailand’s most iconic dive destinations.

Many travellers combine two: Samui for an easy arrival and departure, plus a few nights on Phangan or Tao. The Gulf’s rainy season falls at a different time from Phuket and Krabi on the Andaman coast, so check the weather section below before you fix dates. Keep your shortlist and ferry times together in [My Trip](/my-trip).

## How do Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao compare?

Samui is the largest and most developed, with its own airport and the widest choice of beaches and hotels. Phangan splits between Haad Rin’s party scene and quieter bays elsewhere on the island. Tao is the smallest of the three and is built around diving, with every visitor arriving and leaving by boat.

Samui’s [TAT page](https://www.tourismthailand.org/Destinations/Provinces/Ko-Samui/360) lists Chaweng, Lamai, Taling Ngam and Natien among its popular beaches, and cooking classes, yoga, Muay Thai, scuba diving and golf among its activities. It also notes that the island is small enough to drive round in a couple of hours, so a single base can work for a short stay.

TAT’s [Ko Tao attraction page](https://www.tourismthailand.org/Attraction/ko-tao) suggests reaching the island by boat via Samui with operators such as Lomprayah and Seatran Discovery, while its [Ko Tao province page](https://www.tourismthailand.org/Destinations/Provinces/Ko-Tao/361) notes the island lies closer to the Chumphon coast, which is why many travellers come from there instead. The table below is our planning summary; the “best for” row is editorial judgement.

| | Koh Samui | Koh Phangan | Koh Tao |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Vibe | Largest and most developed; resorts, towns and busy beach strips | Party nights at Haad Rin; quieter bays elsewhere | Small island centred on dive schools |
| Best for (our verdict) | Families, couples, short trips and anyone flying in | Full Moon Party, longer slow stays, yoga and wellness breaks | Learning to dive, fun dives and snorkelling |
| Diving | Dive trips run from the island | Ask locally; Koh Tao is the main training base nearby | Major PADI and SSI training destination |
| Beaches | Chaweng, Lamai, Taling Ngam, Natien | Haad Rin, Thong Nai Pan, Mae Haad | Sai Nuan, plus nearby Ko Nang Yuan |
| Getting there | Flights to Samui Airport; ferries from Donsak | Ferries from Donsak or Samui to Thong Sala or Haad Rin | Ferries from Chumphon, or via Samui and Phangan |

## How do you get to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao?

Fly to Samui Airport for the quickest arrival, or fly or take the train to Surat Thani or Chumphon and continue by boat. Ferries leave Donsak for Samui and Phangan, and Chumphon for Koh Tao. Lomprayah, Seatran Discovery and Raja Ferry are the established operators to compare on these routes.

Samui Airport is [privately owned and operated by Bangkok Airways](https://www.samuiairportonline.com/). For Phangan and Tao you finish the journey by boat whichever way you come. [Raja Ferry](https://www.rajaferryport.com/) runs passenger and vehicle ferries from its Donsak port to Lipa Noi on Samui and Thong Sala on Phangan, including through tickets from Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat airports.

[Lomprayah](https://www.lomprayah.com/) sells high-speed catamaran and joint bus-and-boat tickets from Bangkok, Chumphon’s Thung Makham Noi pier and Surat Thani, and [Seatran Discovery](https://www.seatrandiscovery.com/) runs high-speed ferries serving Samui’s Bangrak, Maenam and Nathon piers, Thong Sala and Haad Rin on Phangan, and Koh Tao (both checked October 2026). Coming overland from Bangkok? Our [Bangkok to Surat Thani train vs flight guide](/guides/bangkok-to-surat-thani-train-vs-flight) covers the mainland leg; leave a margin in case the train or bus runs late.

## How do you island-hop between Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao?

Use the scheduled high-speed ferries that run in a chain: Samui to Phangan, then Phangan to Koh Tao, or the reverse. Lomprayah and Seatran Discovery both link all three. Book the pier closest to your hotel, check the stop order for your sailing and leave a spare day before any flight home.

TAT’s [Ko Tao page](https://www.tourismthailand.org/Attraction/ko-tao) names Lomprayah and Seatran Discovery as operators between Samui and Tao, and [Lomprayah’s site](https://www.lomprayah.com/) gives journey times of about 45 to 90 minutes for its high-speed ferries and 90 to 120 minutes for vehicle ferries, adding that schedules vary (checked October 2026). Some sailings call at Phangan on the way, so the time to Tao depends on the stop order.

Pier choice matters more than people expect. On Samui, boats use Nathon, Bangrak, Maenam and, for Raja’s car ferries, Lipa Noi; on Phangan, boats use Thong Sala, and some Samui sailings go to Haad Rin. A taxi across Samui to the wrong pier can wipe out the time saved on a faster boat.

[FCDO advice](https://gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/thailand/safety-and-security) notes that passenger boats in Thailand have sunk or collided, so wear the life jacket, avoid boats that look overloaded and accept a cancellation in heavy seas rather than hunting for an operator willing to sail.

## When is the best time to visit Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao?

For the Gulf islands, February to April is the driest stretch, and conditions often stay workable through to September. October to December is the wet season on this coast, peaking in November. That is almost the reverse of Phuket and Krabi, where August to October is wettest and December to February is driest.

Thai Meteorological Department averages for 1991–2020, published in its seasonal outlooks for [January–March](https://www.tmd.go.th/media/climate/3-months/newsjfm_2026_english.pdf), [April–June](https://www.tmd.go.th/media/climate/3-months/newsamj_2026_english.pdf), [July–September](https://www.tmd.go.th/media/climate/3-months/newsjas_2026_english.pdf) and [November–January](https://www.tmd.go.th/media/climate/3-months/newsndj_2025_english.pdf), show southern Thailand’s east coast at its wettest in November, then December and October, and at its driest in February. The [September–November 2026 outlook](https://www.tmd.go.th/media/climate/3-months/newsson_2026_english.pdf) explains that the north-east monsoon and a low-pressure trough bring abundant rain to the east coast in November, and warns that tropical cyclones can pass near southern Thailand in October and November.

The [FCDO](https://gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/thailand/safety-and-security) describes Koh Samui’s rainy season as usually November to March, unlike the May to October season elsewhere, and says weather patterns have become less predictable. Rough seas can delay or cancel ferries in the wet months, so build slack into connections. Comparing coasts? See our [Phuket destination guide](/destinations/phuket) for the Andaman side.

| Month | Gulf east coast: Samui, Phangan, Tao (TMD average) | Andaman west coast: Phuket, Krabi (TMD average) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| January | 112.0 mm | 50.2 mm |
| February | 44.2 mm | 30.2 mm |
| March | 89.8 mm | 103.6 mm |
| April | 85.9 mm | 162.2 mm |
| May | 132.6 mm | 300.6 mm |
| June | 118.7 mm | 335.5 mm |
| July | 119.6 mm | 349.4 mm |
| August | 130.6 mm | 419.2 mm |
| September | 147.0 mm | 429.2 mm |
| October | 253.6 mm | 368.8 mm |
| November | 361.4 mm | 193.1 mm |
| December | 296.0 mm | 91.5 mm |

## Where is the Full Moon Party, and is it safe?

The Full Moon Party takes place on Haad Rin beach on Koh Phangan around each full moon. Many people enjoy it without trouble, but drink spiking, sexual assault, drug arrests and drunken swimming are real risks. Go with friends, watch your drinks, avoid drugs completely and plan how you will get back.

[TAT’s Ko Pha-ngan page](https://www.tourismthailand.org/destinations/provinces/ko-pha-ngan/358) calls the monthly full moon party the island’s best-known event. We do not list dates: the party follows the lunar calendar, and Thailand bans most alcohol sales on major Buddhist holy days, several of which fall on full-moon days, as [The Nation reported in July 2026](https://www.nationthailand.com/news/general/40069132). Confirm the night locally close to your trip.

The [FCDO](https://gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/thailand/safety-and-security) says sexual attacks are most common during full moon parties or similar events and near bars late at night, warns about drink spiking and methanol poisoning, and notes that possessing Class A drugs can lead to the death penalty in Thailand. Do not swim after drinking, stay in busy, lit areas and agree a meeting point with your group.

Stay in or near Haad Rin if you want to walk back, and book early if you want to be near the beach on party dates. For wider advice, read our [solo female travel in Thailand guide](/guides/solo-female-travel-thailand).

## How do you choose a dive school on Koh Tao?

Pick a PADI or SSI centre you can verify on the agency’s own locator, then ask about group sizes, equipment servicing, oxygen on the boat and the emergency plan. Make sure your travel insurance covers the course and depth you are doing. Instructor attention and well-maintained kit matter more than the lowest price.

TAT’s [2026 PADI partnership announcement](https://www.tatnews.org/2026/02/tat-boosts-dive-tourism-through-padi-partnership-under-healing-is-the-new-luxury-campaign/) calls Koh Tao a long-established global centre for diver training. Check a shop’s status on the [PADI dive shop locator](https://www.padi.com/dive-shops/) or SSI’s [center locator](https://www.divessi.com/en/blog/new-ssi-center-locator-1012) rather than trusting a logo on a sign.

The [FCDO](https://gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/thailand/safety-and-security) warns that dive schools may have limited resources and do not always observe safety and maintenance standards. It advises checking the operator’s credentials, confirming your insurance conditions, inspecting equipment, making sure there is oxygen on the boat and asking how divers would be transferred to a hyperbaric chamber. Our [guide to reading a travel insurance policy](/guides/how-to-read-travel-insurance-policy) shows where diving limits usually sit.

- How many students does each instructor take in the water?
- When was the rental equipment last serviced, and can you check it before the dive?
- Is there oxygen and a first-aid kit on every boat?
- Which hyperbaric chamber does the centre use, and how would an injured diver get there?
- Does your insurance cover this course, this depth and dive-related evacuation?

## Where should you stay on Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao?

On Samui, pick a busy beach such as Chaweng or Lamai for restaurants and nightlife, or a quieter stretch of coast for resort time. On Phangan, stay in Haad Rin only if partying is the plan. On Koh Tao, stay within easy reach of your dive school and pier to avoid early-morning transfers.

Location decides your transfers more than your room does. Check which pier your ferry uses and how far it is from the hotel, especially on Samui, where Nathon, Bangrak, Maenam and Lipa Noi are in different parts of the island, and on Phangan, where boats arrive at Thong Sala or Haad Rin.

For bays away from the main villages, ask the hotel how guests usually arrive from the pier and whether it arranges transfers. If you plan to hire a scooter, check your licence and travel insurance cover before you ride.
