# Mount Bromo Guide 2026: Sunrise, Tickets, Jeeps and Closures

Mount Bromo guide: pick a sunrise viewpoint, book the official e-ticket, compare jeeps and routes from Surabaya or Malang, and check alert levels and closures.

## How do you plan a Mount Bromo sunrise trip in 2026?

Buy the official e-ticket for your date on the national park’s booking site before you travel; it is not sold at the gate. Then choose a sunrise viewpoint and entry gate, check the volcano alert level and the park’s closure dates, and pack for near-freezing cold before dawn.

Mount Bromo sits inside Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) in East Java. Most visits follow the same rhythm: a drive in the dark to a viewpoint on the caldera rim, sunrise over the Tengger caldera with Bromo and Batok in front and, on clear mornings, Semeru behind, then a jeep down to the sea of sand. The tourism ministry’s [Bromo Tengger Semeru page](https://www.indonesia.travel/gb/en/travel-ideas/adventure/ide-aktivitas-bromo-tengger-semeru) lists the sunrise hills, Pasir Berbisik (the Whispering Sand), the savanna and Pura Luhur Poten, the Tengger temple on the caldera floor.

Four things decide whether the morning works: a ticket for the right date, a viewpoint that suits your fitness and budget, a park that is open that day, and an alert level that allows the visit you have in mind. Each is covered below with the official source to check. If you also plan to hike Ijen, read the last section before booking anything non-refundable.

- Ticket: buy online from TNBTS; foreign visitors paid Rp255,000 per day when we checked in October 2026.
- Viewpoint: Penanjakan 1 is the highest; King Kong Hill and Seruni Point are lower on the same ridge; Bukit Cinta and Mentigen are near Cemoro Lawang.
- Safety: Bromo was at Level II (Waspada) in August 2026, with a 1 km exclusion zone around the active crater.
- Closures: the park closes for Tengger ceremonies, some holidays and emergencies such as the August 2026 wildfire.

## Which Mount Bromo sunrise viewpoint should you choose?

Penanjakan 1 is the highest and best-known viewpoint, reached from the Wonokitri side or by jeep. King Kong Hill sits a little lower on the same ridge and is usually quieter. Seruni Point, Bukit Cinta and Mentigen are close to Cemoro Lawang and suit travellers without a jeep or wanting a shorter morning.

The tourism ministry names Penanjakan, Bukit Cinta and Bukit Mentigen as Bromo’s sunrise hills. A [detikJatim round-up of alternatives (30 December 2023)](https://www.detik.com/jatim/wisata/d-7116623/5-spot-alternatif-berburu-sunrise-di-bromo-selain-puncak-penanjakan) adds Bukit Kingkong (King Kong Hill), which it places just below Penanjakan, a short walk from the road; Seruni Point in Ngadisari village, Probolinggo, reached by climbing several hundred steps; and Pos Dingklik, a junction viewpoint that is easiest to reach from the Wonokitri gate in Pasuruan.

Choose by gate and effort, not reputation alone. Penanjakan 1 gives the widest view but the busiest platform. On a jeep tour the driver sets the viewpoint, so get it confirmed in writing. Mentigen is the low-effort option if you sleep in Cemoro Lawang; detikJatim notes that you do not need a jeep to reach it. Lower hills put the volcanoes closer to eye level, which some photographers prefer, while the ridge-top points show more of the caldera.

Cloud is the wildcard. A misty morning can hide the view from every hill, and no ticket or tour can guarantee a clear sunrise. Ask before booking whether a tour will switch viewpoints if the ridge is clouded in, and whether that costs extra.

| Viewpoint | Nearest gate or base (as reported) | Access | Best for (our verdict) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Penanjakan 1 | Wonokitri (Pasuruan), or by jeep from Cemoro Lawang | Road access to the top; the busiest platform | The classic wide view across the caldera |
| King Kong Hill (Bukit Kingkong) | Same ridge, just below Penanjakan | Short walk from the road | A quieter alternative to Penanjakan |
| Seruni Point (Penanjakan 2) | Ngadisari, near Cemoro Lawang (Probolinggo) | Several hundred steps | Travellers staying on the Probolinggo side |
| Bukit Cinta | Probolinggo side | Not detailed in the sources we checked; ask your driver | Views of Bromo, Semeru and Arjuno |
| Bukit Mentigen | Cemoro Lawang (Probolinggo) | Short; no jeep needed, according to detikJatim | An easy sunrise from a Cemoro Lawang guesthouse |
| Pos Dingklik | Wonokitri (Pasuruan) | Roadside junction | Mount Batok at almost eye level |

## How much is the Mount Bromo entrance fee, and how do you book it?

Foreign visitors paid Rp255,000 per person per day, on weekdays and holidays alike, when we checked in October 2026. Indonesian visitors paid Rp54,000 on weekdays and Rp79,000 on holidays. The fee includes insurance. Tickets are sold online only, through the national park’s official booking site, against a daily quota.

The rates come from TNBTS’s [tariff notice under Government Regulation 36 of 2024](https://bromotenggersemeru.org/article/pengumuman-penyesuaian-tarif-tnbts-sesuai-pp-36-tahun-2024/), in force since 30 October 2024, which says the price covers area entry and insurance. Vehicles entering the Bromo area pay a separate daily charge. The notice also says visitors or vehicles without a ticket are fined five times the normal rate.

Book at [bromotenggersemeru.id](https://bromotenggersemeru.id/), the address the park gave when it reopened ticket sales in August 2026, as [Antara reported (19 August 2026)](https://jatim.antaranews.com/berita/1091497/kawasan-bromo-kembali-dibuka-pada-20-agustus). The same report put the daily quota at 2,752 visitors. Older articles point to a “bookingbromo” subdomain that no longer works; ignore look-alike sites. The park’s [2024 registration notice](https://bromotenggersemeru.org/article/masuk-kawasan-gunung-bromo-wajib-daftar-online-calon-pengunjung-wajib-tahu-cara-registrasinya/) said tickets are not sold on the spot and cannot be refunded or rescheduled once paid, so fix your date first.

Buy the ticket yourself, or get your tour’s booking code in writing. In July 2025 a tour leader complained of being overcharged after asking local people at the Wonokitri gate to buy tickets for guests who had none. The park said the person who took the money was not one of its officers and urged operators to book through the official site at least 30 days ahead ([detikJatim, 31 July 2025](https://www.detik.com/jatim/berita/d-8039056/tour-leader-wisatawan-bromo-keluhkan-pungli-tiket-masuk)).

| TNBTS tariff (checked October 2026) | Weekday | Holiday |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Foreign visitor, per person per day (insurance included) | Rp255,000 | Rp255,000 |
| Indonesian visitor, per person per day (insurance included) | Rp54,000 | Rp79,000 |
| Motorbike, per vehicle per day | Rp5,000 | Rp5,000 |
| Four-wheeled vehicle, per vehicle per day | Rp10,000 | Rp10,000 |

## Is Mount Bromo safe to visit, and what does the alert level mean?

Check the current level on MAGMA Indonesia before you go. Bromo was at Level II (Waspada) in early August 2026, when the official advice was to stay out of a 1 km radius around the active crater because phreatic eruptions can happen without clear warning. Follow rangers and warning signs on the day.

Indonesia’s volcano agency (PVMBG, part of the Geological Agency) publishes alert levels and recommendations on [MAGMA Indonesia](https://magma.esdm.go.id/), in Indonesian. There are four levels: I Normal, II Waspada, III Siaga and IV Awas. The recommendations, not the level name alone, tell you which areas are off limits.

[detikJatim (9 August 2026)](https://www.detik.com/jatim/wisata/d-8610831/apakah-gunung-bromo-masih-aktif-ini-status-terbarunya), citing MAGMA’s report for 8 August, said Bromo remained at Level II and repeated the advice for residents, visitors and climbers to stay out of the 1 km radius around the active crater. We could not load MAGMA from our desk on 16 October 2026, so treat that as the last level we saw reported, not today’s.

The crater rim lies inside that radius. While a 1 km exclusion applies, do not plan on climbing the steps to the rim, whatever a tour itinerary says. The tourism ministry’s own advice is not to take risks when the status is Waspada or Siaga, and the UK Foreign Office warns that [volcanoes can erupt without warning and exclusion zones can change at short notice](https://gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/indonesia/safety-and-security).

| MAGMA level | What it means for a visit (our summary) |
| --- | --- |
| Level I – Normal | Visits as usual, but site rules and local restrictions still apply |
| Level II – Waspada | An exclusion radius around the crater (1 km at Bromo in August 2026) |
| Level III – Siaga | Wider exclusions; expect tours and access to be cut back or cancelled |
| Level IV – Awas | The highest level; do not travel to the area unless authorities say otherwise |

## When is Mount Bromo closed to visitors?

The park closes Bromo for Tengger ceremonies such as Yadnya Kasada and Wulan Kapitu, around some religious holidays, and in emergencies. In 2026 it closed for Yadnya Kasada from 30 May to 2 June, and every gate shut from 8 to 20 August after a wildfire. Check the park’s announcements before you pay.

Yadnya Kasada is the Tengger community’s offering ceremony, held on the 14th day of the Kasada month at full moon, according to the tourism ministry. For 2026 the park closed the Bromo area from 00:00 on 30 May to 23:59 on 2 June, with access limited to people taking part in the ritual and then to clean-up crews, and let visitors back in from 01:00 on 3 June ([Antara, 24 May 2026](https://jatim.antaranews.com/berita/1068108/aktivitas-wisata-di-gunung-bromo-ditutup-saat-peringatan-yadnya-kasada)). The date moves each year with the Tengger calendar.

Other closures are announced on the park’s site, including closures at the end of [Wulan Kapitu](https://bromotenggersemeru.org/news/penutupan-kawasan-bromo-di-wulan-kapitu/), a Tengger observance, and around Nyepi and Idul Fitri. Emergencies can close every gate at once: after a forest fire that began on 3 August 2026, all entrances closed on the night of 8 August, and tourism reopened at 00:01 on 20 August ([Antara, 19 August 2026](https://jatim.antaranews.com/berita/1091497/kawasan-bromo-kembali-dibuka-pada-20-agustus)).

When it reopened, the park asked visitors not to light fires or drop cigarette ends, and to report smoke or embers to officers. In the dry season, keep a spare day in your itinerary and ask your tour what happens if the park closes after you have paid.

## Do you need a jeep tour at Mount Bromo, and what should it include?

Most visitors use a local four-wheel-drive jeep for the pre-dawn run to the viewpoint and the drive across the sea of sand. Compare jeep tours on the sunrise viewpoint, pickup time, whether the park fee is included, private or shared vehicle, the stops after sunrise, and the terms if the park closes.

The tourism ministry says jeep tours are driven and guided by local operators and puts typical jeep hire at roughly Rp750,000 to Rp1,500,000. It does not say what each price covers, so treat that as a ballpark, not a tariff. A standard circuit links a sunrise hill with the sea of sand, Pura Luhur Poten, the Whispering Sand and the savanna. Whether a stop near the crater is possible depends on the alert level (see above).

The biggest source of confusion is the entrance fee. Some listings on online travel agencies quote the jeep only, or show a price for Indonesian residents and add a surcharge for foreign visitors later. Ask for the total for your passport, and whether the operator buys your e-ticket or you must. If the park ticket is your job, buy it for the same date as the jeep.

For a sunrise trip from Malang or Surabaya, check the pickup time and how long you will spend at the viewpoint. A private jeep lets your group set the pace; a shared jeep costs less but follows the group. Ask how the driver handles cloud, crowds or a closure, and whether you are refunded if the park shuts after you have paid.

- The total price for your nationality, with the park fee and vehicle fee shown
- The named sunrise viewpoint, and whether switching costs extra
- The pickup point and time, and the last stop before you return
- Private or shared jeep, and the maximum number of passengers
- What happens if the park closes or the alert level changes

## How do you get to Mount Bromo from Surabaya, Malang or Probolinggo?

Pick your gate first. Cemoro Lawang, on the Probolinggo side, is the usual base for public transport and overnight stays; Wonokitri, on the Pasuruan side, is closest to Penanjakan; trips from Malang enter via Jemplang or Coban Trisula. Surabaya has the nearest major airport, and trains run from Surabaya to Probolinggo.

The park’s main gates, all closed and reopened together after the August 2026 fire, are Cemorolawang (Probolinggo Regency), Wonokitri (Pasuruan Regency), Jemplang and Coban Trisula (Malang Regency) and Senduro (Lumajang Regency), as [Antara reported](https://jatim.antaranews.com/berita/1091497/kawasan-bromo-kembali-dibuka-pada-20-agustus). Your gate decides your viewpoint options, so choose it alongside the viewpoint table above.

From Surabaya, the simplest independent route is a train to Probolinggo, then road transport up to Cemoro Lawang; check train times in the Access by KAI app or on [KAI’s website](https://www.kai.id/). Juanda International Airport serves Surabaya. From Malang, the nearest gates are Jemplang and Coban Trisula, and most visitors join a jeep tour rather than rely on public transport. Private drivers run from both cities. Our [Surabaya](/destinations/surabaya) and [Malang](/destinations/malang) guides cover the city end of the trip.

Sleeping near the rim makes sunrise much easier. A night in Cemoro Lawang, or near Wonokitri and Tosari on the Pasuruan side, swaps a midnight departure for an early alarm. Without a car, Cemoro Lawang is the practical base, because Seruni Point, Bukit Cinta and Mentigen are close by.

## Where should you stay for a Mount Bromo sunrise?

Stay as close to your gate as you can. Cemoro Lawang suits independent travellers and walk-up viewpoints such as Mentigen and Seruni Point; the Wonokitri and Tosari side suits Penanjakan; a hotel in Malang or Surabaya means a midnight start. Check heating, hot water and pickup arrangements, because nights on the rim are cold.

Accommodation near the caldera ranges from simple guesthouses to hotels, and facilities vary more than on the coast. Before booking, confirm hot water and blankets or heating, whether breakfast is served after you return from sunrise, and whether the property can arrange a jeep that collects you at the door.

On a multi-day route, think about luggage. Some travellers leave large bags at a hotel in Malang or Surabaya and go up with a daypack. Read cancellation terms with the park’s closure calendar in mind: a non-refundable room on a closure date is money lost.

## What should you wear and pack for Mount Bromo?

Pack for cold, dust and darkness. The tourism ministry says temperatures can fall to around 5°C at night and before dawn, and the sea of sand is dusty. Bring a warm jacket, a hat, gloves, a mask or buff, sunglasses or goggles, a head torch and shoes with grip.

Layers matter more than one heavy coat. You will stand still in the cold at the viewpoint, then warm up quickly once the sun is up and the jeep drops you on the sand. The ministry recommends warm clothing, a hat, gloves, a mask and goggles, and wind on the ridge can make it feel colder than the thermometer suggests.

Carry your e-ticket offline as a screenshot or printout, with the ID you booked it under, plus water and a snack for the wait. If ash or a sulphur smell becomes noticeable, a well-fitting mask helps, but distance from the crater matters more: follow the rangers.

- An insulated jacket plus a fleece or warm mid-layer
- A hat, gloves and a scarf or buff
- A mask and sunglasses or goggles for dust on the sea of sand
- A head torch: paths and viewpoints are dark before sunrise
- Shoes with grip for sandy, uneven steps
- Your e-ticket saved offline and the ID used to book it

## Can you combine Mount Bromo and Ijen in one trip?

Yes. A common overland route runs from Surabaya or Malang to Bromo, east to Banyuwangi for Ijen, then across to Bali by ferry. Allow for two pre-dawn starts, two separate non-refundable park tickets with different rules, and Ijen’s health certificate, which must be issued no more than three days before your hike.

Bromo and Ijen are run by different agencies with different booking systems. Bromo tickets come from TNBTS; Ijen tickets are sold on the Forestry Ministry’s platform for BBKSDA East Java, and the [Ijen terms](https://ayoketamannasional.kehutanan.go.id/en/taman-wisata-alam/kawah-ijen) require a health certificate. Check both closure calendars: Ijen closes on scheduled cleaning days (the next listed are 6 November and 4 December 2026), and either park can close for weather, volcanic activity or fire.

Bromo at sunrise and Ijen the following night means very little sleep. Build in a rest night in Banyuwangi if you can, and buy the Ijen ticket for the right date: the platform says a Saturday-night start needs a Sunday ticket. Ferries from Ketapang to Gilimanuk in west Bali are ticketed through ASDP’s [Ferizy](https://www.ferizy.com/) system. Our [Ijen Crater guide](/guides/ijen-crater-guide) covers the hike, and our [Indonesia planning guide](/guides/indonesia-travel-planning) helps fit Java into a wider route.
