# Positioning Flights Guide 2026: When the Hop Saves the Trip

Positioning flights explained beyond the glossary — when a cheap hop to another hub beats origin pricing, award starts and open-jaw math. Separate-ticket risks in the companion page; verify live fares.

## When is a positioning flight worth it?

A positioning flight is worth it when reaching a better origin plus the long-haul fare from that hub is materially below flying long-haul from home — after bags, hotels and connection time. Classic cases: Dublin or Madrid instead of London for the Atlantic, or a US hub sale before an award long-haul. Not for fragile same-day connections.

Glossary: [what is a positioning flight](/guides/what-is-a-positioning-flight). This guide adds decision maths and workflow.

We do not invent sample fares — search your hub pair live on [Aviasales](/deals/flight-deals) and the airline site.

## How do you evaluate a positioning flight?

Add positioning cost + long-haul cost + overnight hotel (if needed) + ground transfer + bag fees on both tickets. Compare to direct-from-home cash or points. Require a buffer of at least one meaningful night's hotel or several hours of hassle pay — thin savings die to delays.

**Same ticket vs separate:** married segments on one PNR protect misconnects; separate tickets do not — read [positioning flights separate-ticket risk](/guides/positioning-flights-separate-ticket-risk).

**Award positioning:** cheap cash or Avios hop to an airline's hub before a long-haul award — verify both segments before transferring bank points.

**Overnight:** positioning often needs a hotel — include it in the spreadsheet.

| Factor | Include in maths | Common miss |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Positioning fare | Yes | Basic economy bag fee |
| Long-haul fare | Yes | Fuel surcharges on awards |
| Hotel overnight | If required | Assuming same-day always works |
| Ground transfer | Both airports | Last train times |
| Delay risk | Qualitative | Treating separate tickets as protected |

## When should you skip positioning?

Skip when savings are under a hotel night, when separate tickets have under three hours protected connection time, when immigration requires a visa you lack for the positioning country, or when one checked bag must be reclaimed and re-checked manually between tickets.

**When positioning wins:** APD-heavy UK origins, fragmented US metro areas, award space only from a partner hub.

**When positioning loses:** LCC positioning arrives at secondary airport miles from main hub.

## Positioning flights — verdict

Verdict: positioning is a power-user fare tool — not free money. Run all-in maths with hotels and bags; prefer single-ticket positioning where airlines sell it; treat separate tickets as self-transfer with real miss risk. Not for first-time international travellers or tight connection lovers.

## Positioning flights FAQ

Verify live positioning and long-haul fares the same day — gaps move with sales and FX.

**Points positioning?** Yes — but transfer only after both legs price.

**Train positioning?** Often beats short-hop flights in Europe — include rail time.
