# Positioning Flights on Separate Tickets: Self-Transfer Risk 2026

When positioning hops are on a different PNR from your long-haul — missed connection liability, insurance gaps, MCT fiction and minimum connection times that actually work.

## What is the risk of positioning on separate tickets?

Separate-ticket positioning is a self-transfer: if the first flight delays and you miss the long-haul, neither airline must rebook you for free. You may forfeit the long-haul fare or buy a walk-up replacement. Kiwi and other self-transfer OTAs sell protection products — read exclusions before relying on them.

Minimum connection time (MCT) on airport websites assumes protected connections — not your situation.

## How much connection time do you need on separate tickets?

Budget far above published MCT: domestic→international often needs three to four hours minimum; international→international with immigration and terminal changes may need five or more. Overnight positioning removes most delay risk at the cost of a hotel.

**Terminal change:** add time for landside transfers.

**Immigration:** entering Schengen or the US between tickets adds unpredictable queues.

**Bags:** unless through-checking on interline agreements, reclaim and re-check — add 60–90 minutes.

## Does travel insurance cover missed self-transfers?

Standard trip-delay cover may help after long delays; "missed connection" riders vary — many exclude separate-ticket connections unless you bought a specific add-on. Read the policy wording; do not assume credit-card trip delay covers self-transfer positioning.

EU261 may apply to the delayed first segment but does not automatically rebook your second ticket on another carrier.

See [missed connection compensation rights](/guides/missed-connection-compensation-rights) for statutory vs voluntary connections.

## Separate-ticket positioning — verdict

Verdict: separate tickets are for experienced travellers with time buffers or overnights — not for "save £40 with a 75-minute connection." Prefer single-PNR positioning sales; if separate is unavoidable, overnight. Not for checked bags on tight clocks or anyone without cash backup for a rebook.

## Separate-ticket positioning FAQ

No invented fare savings — risk math is qualitative. Verify connection airports and visa rules live.

**Kiwi Guarantee?** Product-specific — read current terms.

**Same airline, two bookings?** Still separate protection unless linked PNR.
