## What is a GHIC?

A GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) is a free UK government card that lets eligible travellers access medically necessary state healthcare in participating European countries on the same basis as local residents — it is not a substitute for comprehensive travel insurance.

This glossary entry is desk research for July 2026 travellers. Figures and programme names change; treat official portals as the final check.

The GHIC replaced the EHIC for most UK residents after Brexit. It covers state-provided, medically necessary treatment while you are temporarily abroad in participating countries — typically EU and EEA states plus Switzerland under reciprocal arrangements. the NHS GHIC country list before each trip, because participation and paperwork notes change.

## How does a GHIC work when you need care abroad?

You present the GHIC at a state healthcare provider in a participating country; treatment that is medically necessary during your stay is charged (or waived) under local public rules rather than full private tourist rates.

Medically necessary means care you cannot reasonably wait to receive until you return home: accident & emergency, sudden illness, dialysis already planned under reciprocal rules, and similar. It does not mean every private clinic, mountain-rescue invoice, or cancelled-trip refund. Routine private dentistry, cosmetic work and most repatriation costs sit outside the card.

Apply online via the official NHS GHIC service with your UK address and identity details. Cards usually arrive by post; provisional certificates can bridge urgent travel. current processing times if you are leaving within days.

## When is a GHIC useful — and when is it not enough?

A GHIC helps if you break an ankle in Lisbon and use a public A&E; it will not pay for a private alpine helicopter, lost luggage, or cutting the trip short because a parent is ill at home.

Pair the card with a travel insurance policy that names medical expenses, evacuation and trip interruption. Our longer explainer [GHIC and travel insurance for Europe](/guides/ghic-travel-insurance-europe) walks through the overlap. For policy wording basics, see [how to read a travel insurance policy](/guides/how-to-read-travel-insurance-policy).

Carry the physical card or a clear photo plus the online account confirmation. Hospitals sometimes ask for passport ID matching the card name. If you hold an EHIC that is still in date, check whether it remains valid for your dates or whether you should switch to GHIC.

- Is GHIC free? — Yes via the official NHS channel; beware lookalike paid sites.
- Can students or workers abroad use it? — Eligibility depends on UK residency status; check NHS rules.
- Do I still need travel insurance? — Yes for evacuation, cancellation and gaps GHIC never covers.
