## What is a status match?

A status match is when a loyalty programme grants you an elite tier after you show proof of comparable status in another airline or hotel programme — sometimes instantly, sometimes via a spend-or-fly challenge.

This glossary entry is desk research for July 2026 travellers. Figures and programme names change; treat official portals as the final check.

Airlines use matches to poach frequent flyers when competitors cut benefits or when new joint ventures launch. Hotels run similar campaigns after brand mergers. Offers appear and disappear; screenshot terms. the live match form before you cancel your old card.

## How does a status match differ from a status challenge?

A pure match posts the tier after document review; a challenge gives temporary status that becomes permanent only if you meet flight, night or spend targets within a set window.

Proof usually means a screenshot of your elite card, account page or recent activity. Some programmes exclude status earned only via credit cards or partnerships. Matching into an alliance member does not automatically clone every lounge rule on every partner.

After a match, track elite-qualifying miles or nights so you requalify at year-end. See [elite-qualifying miles](/guides/elite-qualifying-miles-explained).

## When is a status match worth doing?

You hold hotel gold from a brand you are leaving; a rival offers gold match for 90 days if you stay ten nights — useful if those nights were already in your calendar.

Airline example: mid-tier status on Carrier A matched to Carrier B before a heavy season on B’s network. Combine with a planned [mileage run](/guides/what-is-mileage-run) only if the challenge maths needs it.

## Status match — related terms

Matches sit beside mattress runs (hotel nights) and mileage runs (air miles) as elite tools — different costs, same goal of tier benefits.

Alliance context: [airline alliances explained](/guides/airline-alliances-explained).

- Is a match guaranteed forever? — No; you still need to requalify.
- Do credit-card statuses match? — Often excluded.
- Can I match hotels and airlines together? — Separate programmes, separate forms.
- Tax or fee? — Some hotel matches are free; watch challenge spend.

## How do you request a status match that succeeds?

Apply through the airline or hotel’s status-match page with proof of your current tier — a card photo and recent statement — target programmes running public match campaigns, and time the request for when you have travel booked to clear any challenge requirement.

A status match converts loyalty you already hold into equivalent standing with a competitor, instantly or via a challenge (keep the new status by flying or staying a set amount within 90 days). Programmes open and close match windows constantly, so the first step is finding live offers: loyalty blogs and the programmes’ own promotions pages list current campaigns, and airlines routinely match hotel status and vice versa through partnership chains.

The application is simple but evidence-driven: a screenshot of your current membership card showing name and tier, plus a recent activity statement proving the status is real and active. Match to the tier you genuinely hold — inflated claims get rejected and occasionally flagged. Approval takes days to weeks, so apply well before the trip you want the benefits for.

Strategically, matches shine before a run of travel on a new carrier: matched status delivers lounge access, priority lanes and bonus earning immediately, and a successful challenge converts it into a full year or more. Some matched status even extends alliance-wide benefits. Combine with [elite qualifying miles](/guides/elite-qualifying-miles-explained) knowledge to plan the challenge efficiently, and see our [hotel status match guide](/guides/hotel-status-match-guide) for the lodging side.
