## What is the difference between a stopover and a layover?

A layover is a short same-ticket connection between flights; a stopover is a longer deliberate break — often over 24 hours on international itineraries — still on one ticket so you can leave the airport and continue later.

Exact hour cut-offs vary by airline and fare rules. Many international tariffs treat a break over 24 hours as a stopover; domestic US rules historically used four hours as a common layover/stopover boundary. The booking path matters: “stopover” products (Icelandair, Turkish, some Gulf and Asian carriers, or multi-city builders) price the break intentionally; a long accidental connection is still usually just a layover if under the fare’s stopover definition.

Both can be protected when sold on one ticket. A stopover lets you book a hotel and see the city; a layover is for changing planes. ## How do you book a stopover on purpose?

Use the airline’s stopover tool or a multi-city search that keeps one ticket, confirm the break exceeds the layover definition in the fare rules, then book hotels only after the flights are ticketed.

Example: London → Doha → Bangkok with 30 hours in Doha on one Qatar ticket is a stopover product if offered; London → Doha → Bangkok with 2 hours in Doha is a layover. ## How do you turn a layover into a free stopover on purpose?

Book multi-city or use airline stopover programmes — several flag carriers let you add days in their hub city for little or no extra airfare — then confirm visa rules for the stopover country before committing to the longer stay.

The layover-to-stopover upgrade is one of travel’s best freebies. Icelandair popularised the model with up to seven days in Reykjavik at no extra airfare, and carriers from Lisbon to Abu Dhabi run similar programmes — some bundling discounted hotels or free city tours. The mechanics are simple: instead of accepting the two-hour connection the search engine suggests, build the itinerary multi-city with days in the middle, or book through the airline’s stopover portal.

Price both structures. Sometimes the formal stopover programme is cheapest; other times a manually built multi-city ticket costs the same as the direct return, effectively gifting you a second destination. Either way you collect your bags and enter the country, so check entry requirements early — a nationality that transits airside visa-free may still need an eVisa or ETA for a three-day stay.

Mind the trade-offs: stopovers add accommodation cost and can reset checked-bag allowances on the second half, and some fares charge a stopover fee of USD 50–100 that is still excellent value.
