## Which area of Jakarta is best to stay in?

For a first visit, stay on the Thamrin–Sudirman corridor or in Menteng: both put the MRT, TransJakarta and KRL within reach. Choose Senopati or SCBD for restaurants and nightlife, Kemang only if you accept car dependence and flood risk, Kota Tua for heritage, and an airport hotel for early flights.

Jakarta is too large and congested to choose by map distance. Choose by the journeys you will repeat: airport, sights, dinner and your onward train. We compared areas using transport operators’ and Jakarta government sources, the UK FCDO and dated news reports. We do not name or rank hotels; use the [Jakarta hotel comparison](/hotels/jakarta) and the [Jakarta guide](/destinations/jakarta) alongside this page.

Arriving at Soekarno–Hatta? Read [Jakarta airport to your hotel](/guides/jakarta-airport-to-hotel) before booking, because your area decides whether the airport train makes sense. Heading on by rail? The [7-day Java itinerary](/guides/java-7-day-itinerary-by-train) shows how a Jakarta night fits a train trip.

| Area | Vibe | Best for | Rail access | Watch-outs |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Menteng | Leafy heritage streets | Calm central base | KRL Cikini and Gondangdia; MRT on nearby Thamrin | Boundary roads are busier; check the exact street |
| Senopati / SCBD / Kebayoran Baru | Restaurants, bars, towers | Food, nightlife, business | MRT Senayan, Istora, ASEAN, Blok M | Flood history near Petogogan; odd-even roads |
| Kemang | Cafés and expat-oriented dining | Longer stays, South Jakarta visits | No MRT or KRL station | Car dependence; Krukut river flooding |
| Thamrin / Sudirman | CBD and malls | First-timers, business, airport train | MRT spine; Dukuh Atas hub with KRL, LRT, airport train | Odd-even rules; large roads to cross |
| Kota Tua / Glodok | Colonial and Chinese heritage | One or two heritage nights | KRL Jakarta Kota; TransJakarta Corridor 1 | Long rides south; low-lying north |
| Near Soekarno–Hatta | Functional | Early flights, late arrivals | Airport train station at CGK | Far from the city; check shuttles |

## Is Menteng a good area to stay in Jakarta?

Yes. Menteng is the best choice for a calm, central base: an early-20th-century garden suburb with heritage protection, KRL commuter stations at Cikini and Gondangdia, and the Thamrin MRT corridor nearby. It suits couples, repeat visitors and anyone who prefers quiet streets to a mall district.

Republika describes Menteng as a garden-city district built under Dutch rule and [designated by the city as a heritage zone](https://news.republika.co.id/berita/ny0p5c319/menteng-pusat-kekuasaan). Expect tree-lined residential streets, embassies and older houses rather than a nightlife strip. Check the exact street rather than relying on a Menteng label, because the quiet interior and the busy boundary roads feel very different.

Cikini and Gondangdia are stations on the KRL commuter line run by [KAI Commuter](https://commuterline.id/), which links Manggarai and Jakarta Kota. The MRT’s Bundaran HI and Dukuh Atas stations on Thamrin may be a walk or a short ride, depending on your street; [MRT Jakarta](https://jakartamrt.co.id/) publishes the line. TransJakarta’s [Corridor 1, Blok M–Kota](https://transjakarta.co.id/rute), runs along Thamrin.

Gambir station, for KAI trains to Bandung and Yogyakarta, is a short ride north, which makes Menteng a sensible night before a rail departure. As anywhere in Jakarta, ask the hotel about road access in heavy rain.

## Should you stay in Senopati, SCBD or Kebayoran Baru?

Stay here if restaurants, bars and a modern business district matter most. SCBD and Senopati sit in South Jakarta near the MRT stations at Senayan, Istora, ASEAN and Blok M, while Kebayoran Baru is leafier and residential. Check flood history near Petogogan and the odd-even rules on main roads.

The MRT North–South Line runs from Lebak Bulus to Bundaran HI, with 13 stations; Senayan, Istora, ASEAN and Blok M serve this area. Check the station nearest your hotel on [MRT Jakarta’s site](https://jakartamrt.co.id/). TransJakarta’s [Corridor 1](https://transjakarta.co.id/rute) starts at Blok M and runs north to Kota, a useful single-seat ride to the old town.

Jakarta’s water agency plans to widen a 1.3 km stretch of the Krukut river from 2026, starting at Petogogan in Kebayoran Baru, after the governor called the narrowed channel [one of the triggers of flooding](https://dsda.jakarta.go.id/detail-artikel/gubernur-pramono-jelaskan-alasan-normalisasi-kali-krukut/105). If you are booking near the river in the rainy season, ask the property how its access road coped in recent storms.

Odd-even number-plate rules cover main roads here, including Sisingamangaraja, Panglima Polim and Fatmawati, [Metro TV reported in April 2026](https://www.metrotvnews.com/read/NleC91xz-26-ruas-jalan-ganjil-genap-di-jakarta-simak-jadwal-dan-aturannya). That matters if friends are collecting you by private car at peak hours.

## Is Kemang a good place to stay in Jakarta?

Only if you want its cafés, galleries and expat-oriented restaurants and are happy to travel by car. Kemang has no MRT or KRL station of its own, so most trips mean ride-hailing or taxis on congested roads. Jakarta’s water agency also links recurring Kemang floods to the narrowed Krukut river.

Without rail, every trip to the CBD, the old town or the airport goes by road. The nearest MRT stations are on the Fatmawati corridor to the west, a ride away rather than a walk for most hotels. That can work for a longer stay centred on South Jakarta, but it is a poor fit for a first-time sightseeing trip.

In November 2025 Jakarta’s water agency reported the governor linking flooding in Kemang after very heavy rain on 30 October to the [narrowed Krukut channel](https://dsda.jakarta.go.id/detail-artikel/gubernur-pramono-jelaskan-alasan-normalisasi-kali-krukut/105), and planned works from 2026. The [FCDO](https://gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/indonesia/safety-and-security) says the rainy season usually runs from October to March. Ask whether the hotel’s street and entrance flood, and avoid ground-floor rooms near the river.

Kemang suits travellers visiting friends or family in South Jakarta, people who work remotely from cafés, and anyone who prefers a village-like cluster of restaurants to malls.

In town for Jakarta Fashion Week? JFW 2027 (each edition is named for the following year) runs from 26 October to 1 November 2026 at Pondok Indah Mall 3 in South Jakarta, its home since 2022, so Kemang, Senopati or Kebayoran Baru are closer than the old town. Our sister site The Cast Index has a [Jakarta Fashion Week guide](https://thecastindex.com/guide/jakarta-fashion-week-guide) with past venues and edition dates.

## Why stay on the Thamrin–Sudirman corridor?

It is Jakarta’s best-connected base. The MRT runs underground from Bundaran HI to Senayan, TransJakarta Corridor 1 runs along the avenue, and Dukuh Atas links the MRT with the KRL, LRT and the airport train at BNI City. It suits first-timers, business travellers and anyone arriving from CGK.

[Medcom described](https://www.medcom.id/nasional/metro/gNQvOY5b-intip-rute-lrt-jabodebek-yang-resmi-beroperasi-hari-ini) the Dukuh Atas LRT station as integrated with a TransJakarta stop and KRL Sudirman, with the MRT and the BNI City airport-train station alongside. [Bisnis.com reported in June 2026](https://ekonomi.bisnis.com/read/20260624/98/1982984/dukuh-atas-bersiap-jadi-jantung-integrasi-transportasi-jakarta) that physical links have improved but transfers and signage remain weak, so allow time to change between systems.

The MRT is being extended north. The Jakarta government’s news service reported in August 2026 that [Phase 2A will add seven stations](https://www.beritajakarta.id/en/read/154814/mrt-phase-2a-construction-reaches-6268-percent) from Bundaran HI to Kota, with the Monas segment targeted for the end of 2027 and Kota for the end of 2029. Until then, use TransJakarta or the KRL for the old town.

Odd-even plate rules apply on Thamrin and Sudirman on weekdays from 06:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 21:00, with public transport and electric vehicles exempt, [Metro TV reported](https://www.metrotvnews.com/read/NleC91xz-26-ruas-jalan-ganjil-genap-di-jakarta-simak-jadwal-dan-aturannya). The avenues are wide, so check that a hotel has a sensible crossing to your station.

## Should you stay in Kota Tua or Glodok?

Stay in Kota Tua or Glodok for one or two nights if Jakarta’s colonial and Chinese heritage is the point of your trip. You can walk to Fatahillah Square and Chinatown lanes, and Jakarta Kota is the KRL terminus. Expect long rides to the south and a low-lying, flood-exposed area.

Indonesia’s tourism site describes Kota Tua as a [former Dutch-era trading hub](https://www.indonesia.travel/us-en/travel-ideas/heritage/looking-for-a-historical-trip-in-jakarta-these-spots-will-send-you-back-in-time) with colonial buildings, Fatahillah Square, the Jakarta History Museum and the Wayang Museum, and mentions walking in nearby Glodok. Go early in the day for cooler walks; museum hours vary.

Jakarta Kota station is the northern end of the [KAI Commuter](https://commuterline.id/) line through Menteng and Manggarai, and TransJakarta’s [Corridor 1](https://transjakarta.co.id/rute) links Kota with Thamrin, Sudirman and Blok M. The MRT will not reach Kota until its [Phase 2A extension](https://www.beritajakarta.id/en/read/154814/mrt-phase-2a-construction-reaches-6268-percent), which is targeted for the end of 2029.

Northern Jakarta has sunk by as much as 4 metres over four decades, leaving roughly 40 per cent of it below sea level, The Jakarta Post reported in January 2026 via [Viet Nam News](https://vietnamnews.vn/world/1763706/jakarta-sinks-deeper-as-subsidence-worsens-flood-risks.html). In the rainy season, ask the hotel about flooding on its access road.

- Open in Google Maps: [Fatahillah Square](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Fatahillah%20Square%2C%20Kota%20Tua%2C%20Jakarta), [Jakarta Kota Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Stasiun%20Jakarta%20Kota%2C%20Jakarta), [Glodok](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Glodok%2C%20Jakarta).

## Should you stay near Soekarno–Hatta airport for an early flight?

Yes, if your flight leaves before the airport train starts, or you land late and fly out early. A hotel at or near CGK removes the toll-road risk that the UK FCDO says includes flooding. Check whether it is inside a terminal, elsewhere on the airport site or off-airport, and how its shuttle works.

[Bisnis.com reported in September 2025](https://ekonomi.bisnis.com/read/20250924/98/1914389/cek-jadwal-kereta-bandara-dari-soekarno-hatta-operasional-pukul-0557-2257-wib) airport-train departures from Soekarno–Hatta between 05:57 and 22:57, about 40 minutes to BNI City, with some weekend services cancelled. Check [Railink](https://www.railink.co.id/) for your date. A pre-dawn departure from a city hotel therefore means a road transfer, and the [FCDO](https://gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/indonesia/safety-and-security) notes that the main toll road to the airport can be affected by flooding.

Confirm your terminal on the ticket before choosing. A property described as an airport hotel may be on the airport site or some distance away, so ask whether a shuttle runs at your departure time and what it costs. Our [airport-to-hotel guide](/guides/jakarta-airport-to-hotel) separates CGK from Halim (HLP), which is a different airport in the east of the city.

## How do traffic and flooding affect where you stay in Jakarta?

Pick a hotel within walking distance of the MRT, KRL or a TransJakarta stop, and check its street’s flood history if you travel in the rainy season, which usually runs from October to March. Odd-even rules limit private cars on main roads at peak times, and heavy rain can disrupt everything.

The [FCDO](https://gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/indonesia/safety-and-security) says Jakarta can see severe localised flooding that causes major traffic congestion and power cuts, and that major roads can be affected. Rail and the dedicated TransJakarta lanes are usually the more predictable way to move at peak times, though stations and walkways can also be affected by heavy rain.

Under the odd-even scheme, only cars with plates matching the date’s odd or even number may use about 26 road segments on weekdays from 06:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 21:00, [Metro TV reported in April 2026](https://www.metrotvnews.com/read/NleC91xz-26-ruas-jalan-ganjil-genap-di-jakarta-simak-jadwal-dan-aturannya). It does not apply at weekends or on public holidays, and public transport and electric vehicles are exempt.

Before paying, ask the hotel whether its entrance or street flooded in recent storms, whether it has backup power, and which station entrance is closest on foot. Keep cash and a charged phone during storms.

## Where should you stay for trains to Bandung or Yogyakarta?

Match the hotel to the station on your ticket. For conventional KAI trains to Bandung or Yogyakarta, stay near Gambir in central Jakarta; for Whoosh, stay where Halim is easy to reach, such as along the LRT line from Dukuh Atas. Do not assume a “central” hotel suits both.

[Seat61](https://www.seat61.com/Indonesia.htm) says Gambir serves most executive-class trains and Pasar Senen is the second station, so check which appears on your ticket. Whoosh departs from Halim; the LRT Jabodebek Bekasi line runs from Dukuh Atas to Halim, [Medcom reported](https://www.medcom.id/nasional/metro/gNQvOY5b-intip-rute-lrt-jabodebek-yang-resmi-beroperasi-hari-ini), and [Bisnis.com described](https://ekonomi.bisnis.com/read/20221123/98/1601384/integrasi-kereta-cepat-dan-lrt-jakarta-bandung-bisa-dari-dukuh-atas) plans to integrate the LRT with the high-speed railway there.

Use the [Whoosh door-to-door guide](/guides/jakarta-to-bandung-whoosh), the [Jakarta–Yogyakarta guide](/guides/jakarta-to-yogyakarta) and the [Indonesia train guide](/guides/indonesia-train-guide) to choose the train first. For a same-day airport-to-Bandung plan, read [Jakarta airport to Bandung](/guides/jakarta-airport-to-bandung) before booking a room.

- Open in Google Maps: [Gambir Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Gambir%20Station%2C%20Jakarta), [Pasar Senen Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Stasiun%20Pasar%20Senen%2C%20Jakarta), [Whoosh Halim Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Whoosh%20Halim%20Station%2C%20Jakarta).

## How should you search Jakarta hotels by area?

Search by the area you have chosen, then check walking distance to a named MRT, KRL or TransJakarta station rather than to the city centre. Compare the same room, breakfast, taxes and cancellation date across sites, and confirm the exact entrance, late check-in and flood access with the property before paying.

Use the [Jakarta hotel comparison](/hotels/jakarta) to shortlist, then read [pay at hotel versus pay now](/guides/pay-at-hotel-vs-pay-now-indonesia) before choosing a payment option. If halal food or prayer facilities matter, see [is Jakarta Muslim-friendly?](/guides/is-jakarta-muslim-friendly). Save quotes and deadlines in [My Trip](/my-trip/) so you compare like with like.

The links below open Booking.com and Agoda searches, not hotels we have inspected. We do not name or rank properties. Enter your area, dates and full party size, and check the map pin against the station you plan to use.
