# Where to stay in Hanoi

Four Hanoi hotels we have read the guest data on — three beside Hoàn Kiếm Lake and the Old Quarter, one on Ly Thuong Kiet — with the complaints written as plainly as the praise.

## Verdict

Stay on Hang Trong or Đường Thành if Hoàn Kiếm Lake and the Old Quarter are the week; stay on Ngo Quyen if you want the Metropole’s historic address; stay on Ly Thuong Kiet if Meliá’s pool-and-business kit suits a slightly wider map.

All four carry POI distances in our seed. Peridot Grand and Oriental Jade both put the Old Quarter at 0.1 km and Hoàn Kiếm Lake at 0.2–0.7 km; Sofitel Metropole puts the lake at 0.1 km; Meliá puts the lake at 0.8 km and the Old Quarter at 0.9 km. Temple of Literature and the mausoleum distances split the boutique lake pins from Meliá’s slightly wider ring.

Guest scores in this sample disagree with their own prose more than once. Oriental Jade posts flat 10s across every category; Sofitel Metropole posts strong room scores beside breakfast called appalling in the same analysis. ## Which area of Hanoi is best for a first visit?

Old Quarter and Hoàn Kiếm — Peridot and Oriental Jade both put the Quarter at 0.1 km on our POI figures. Metropole works if you want the historic address on Ngo Quyen with the lake still at 0.1 km.

## Is Meliá Hanoi too far from the Old Quarter?

It is a wider pin — Old Quarter 0.9 km and Hoàn Kiếm 0.8 km on our figures versus 0.1 km at the boutiques. Fine on foot for many; not the same as waking up on Hang Trong.
