Where to stay in Athens

Four Athens hotels we have read the guest data on — a five-star Grand Hyatt on Syngrou, a four-star on Panepistimiou, a four-star with a rooftop pool in Ambelokipi, and a three-star studio base in Makrigianni — with the complaints written as plainly as the praise.

Where to stay in Athens — the verdict

Stay on Panepistimiou if Syntagma and Plaka walks are the week; stay in Makrigianni if you want a three-star studio base near the Acropolis belt; stay on Syngrou if rooftop-pool luxury matters; stay in Ambelokipi if you want a cleaner four-star rooftop story and accept a longer metro hop to the sights.

Three of the four properties carry POI rows. Titania puts Syntagma at 0.8 km and the Acropolis at 1.3 km; Grand Hyatt puts Syngrou–Fix metro at 0.3 km and the Acropolis at 1.6 km; President puts Ambelokipi Metro at 0.6 km and the Acropolis at 5.3 km. Athens Studios has no POI rows in the ingest — we do not invent kilometre claims for that pin even though the address is Makrigianni.

Guest scores are solid but uneven. President leads the headline at 8.6 out of 10 from 7,519 reviews; Grand Hyatt posts 8.3 from 7,447 with food and beverage at 6.44; Titania posts 8.1 from 9,087 with room quality at 6.94; Athens Studios posts 8.2 from 6,993 with breakfast and heating named as cons. We cite scale, count and date — never as structured data.

Nothing on this page quotes a nightly rate. We hold no live rates — the CTAs send you to Booking.com, Agoda, Trip.com or Vrbo. Those are partners; the links may earn commission.

Best for

  • First-time visitors choosing between Panepistimiou centro and a Syngrou luxury base
  • Families weighing Makrigianni studios against Ambelokipi rooftop-pool space
  • Anyone comparing Titania’s breakfast praise against President’s cleaner room scores

Not for

  • Anyone expecting Grand Hyatt food scores to match the pool story — food and beverage sits at 6.44
  • Guests who need spotless Titania rooms — cleanliness 7.48 and room quality 6.94 with beds named
  • Readers hunting a quoted nightly rate on this page

Best Hotels in Athens

Athens hotel choice is which side of the Acropolis map you accept. These four sit in four different pins on purpose — Panepistimiou for Syntagma walks, Makrigianni for Acropolis-side studios, Syngrou for Grand Hyatt pools, and Ambelokipi for a rooftop four-star that puts the Parthenon more than five kilometres out.

Where to stay in Athens: best areas by trip type

Pick the area before you pick the property. In Athens the walk out of the front door decides more of the trip than the room does.

Panepistimiou & Syntagma belt

Typical nightly rate: Upscale four-star — parking costs are a named con per night

Best for first-time visitors · couples · business trips

Centro Athens on the university avenue — Titania puts Panepistimio Metro at 0.2 km, Syntagma at 0.8 km and the Acropolis at 1.3 km on our figures.

Trade-off: Location is the product; rooms are not. Cleanliness scores 7.48 and room quality 6.94 with uncomfortable beds and cleanliness issues named — you are paying for the pin and breakfast, not a pristine renovation story.

Getting around: Panepistimio Metro at 0.2 km puts Syntagma, Monastiraki and the Acropolis Museum on short metro or walk hops for many itineraries.

Close to: Syntagma Square, Panepistimio Metro, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Monastiraki

  • Syntagma
  • Metro dense
  • Rooftop dining

Makrigianni & Syngrou south

Typical nightly rate: Midrange three-star studios through luxury five-star per night

Best for couples · families · first-time visitors

South of the Acropolis belt — Grand Hyatt on Syngrou Avenue with Fix metro at 0.3 km and Acropolis at 1.6 km, plus Athens Studios on Veikou Street in Makrigianni with no POI kilometre rows in this seed.

Trade-off: Syngrou is a busy avenue, not Plaka calm, and Grand Hyatt’s own guest analysis flags public-transport access as challenging despite Fix at 0.3 km. Athens Studios has no POI rows — we will not invent an Acropolis distance even when the address suggests proximity.

Getting around: Syngrou–Fix serves the Grand Hyatt pin; Makrigianni is the museum-side neighbourhood for Athens Studios — confirm walks on your own map because this seed lacks studio POI rows.

Close to: Acropolis Museum, Syngrou–Fix metro, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Syngrou Avenue

  • Acropolis south
  • Rooftop pool
  • Studios

Ambelokipi & Kifissias

Typical nightly rate: Upscale four-star with rooftop pool per night

Best for couples · families · business trips

North-east residential Athens — President Hotel puts Ambelokipi Metro at 0.6 km, Mount Lycabettus at 2.6 km and the Acropolis at 5.3 km on our figures.

Trade-off: You are not on the Acropolis doorstep. Syntagma is 4.6 km and Plaka/Monastiraki 5 km — a metro habit, not a dawn walk to the Parthenon. Renovation noise and group disturbances appear in the cons.

Getting around: Ambelokipi Metro at 0.6 km is the practical link into centro; airport is 29 km on the POI row — farther than the 20 km figure on the centro hotels.

Close to: Ambelokipi Metro, Mount Lycabettus, National Archaeological Museum, Panathenaic Stadium

  • Rooftop pool
  • Metro access
  • Quieter base

Popular Athens searches

Athens hotels — common questions

Which area of Athens is best for a first visit?
Panepistimiou if Syntagma, Plaka and Monastiraki walks are the week; Makrigianni or Syngrou if you want to stay south of the Acropolis belt; Ambelokipi if rooftop-pool calm matters more than a short walk to the Parthenon. President puts the Acropolis at 5.3 km — plan the metro.
Is Ambelokipi too far from the sights?
For an Acropolis-every-morning trip, yes — 5.3 km to the Acropolis and 5 km to Plaka/Monastiraki on our hotel data provider’s figures for President Hotel. For a quieter rooftop-pool base with Ambelokipi Metro at 0.6 km, it is a fair trade.
Should I book Athens hotels direct or through a booking site?
It varies by property and by date, which is why we never quote a nightly rate here. Check the partner link for your dates, then check the hotel’s own site before you confirm. Booking.com, Agoda, Trip.com and Vrbo are partners; those links may earn commission.
Why do you show guest scores but never a star-rating snippet in search results?
Because the scores are not ours. Every review number on this site comes from a supplier’s aggregate. We show the supplier score plainly, attributed and dated, and we never emit it as structured data.
Titania or President for a four-star stay?
Titania if centro walks and breakfast scores matter; President if rooftop pool and stronger cleanliness/room scores matter and you accept the Ambelokipi pin. Full comparison: /hotels/athens/compare/titania-hotel-vs-president-hotel-athens.
