Where to stay in Berlin

Four Berlin hotels we have read the guest data on — a four-star by Tiergarten, a three-star on Alexanderplatz, one named for the East Side Gallery, and a two-star by Hauptbahnhof — with the complaints written as plainly as the praise.

Where to stay in Berlin — the verdict

Stay by Tiergarten if park and Potsdamer walks matter; stay on Alexanderplatz if Museum Island and the TV Tower are the week; stay at the East Side Gallery pin if Friedrichshain is the mood; stay by Hauptbahnhof if trains and a budget bed are the brief.

Two of the four properties carry full POI rows. Hotel Berlin puts Großer Tiergarten at 0.4 km and Potsdamer Platz at 0.6 km; H2 puts Alexanderplatz station at 0.1 km and Fernsehturm at 0.2 km. Schulz and a&o have no POI rows in the seed — we refuse to invent kilometre figures for them and lean on guest location scores and addresses instead.

Guest scores disagree with themselves more than once. Schulz posts the highest headline in this sample — 8.6 out of 10 from 20,000 reviews — while naming small rooms and bathroom cleanliness; a&o posts 7.4 from 16,803 with cleanliness at 5.79 and overall experience 6.76. We cite scale, count and date — never as structured data.

Nothing on this page quotes a nightly rate. We hold no live rates — the CTAs send you to Booking.com, Agoda, Trip.com or Vrbo. Those are partners; the links may earn commission.

Best for

  • First-time visitors choosing between Alexanderplatz icons and Tiergarten park walks
  • Travellers weighing a four-star fitness-and-sauna base against a two-star Hauptbahnhof bed
  • Anyone comparing a 20,000-review East Side Gallery three-star against an Alexanderplatz H2 pin

Not for

  • Anyone who needs POI kilometre distances for every hotel — Schulz and a&o have none in the seed
  • Guests who will not tolerate cleanliness complaints — all four carry them in guest analysis
  • Readers hunting a quoted nightly rate on this page

Best Hotels in Berlin

Berlin hotel choice is which map you want when you leave the lobby. These four sit in four different pins on purpose — Tiergarten park edge, Alexanderplatz tourist knot, Friedrichshain Wall art, and the Hauptbahnhof arrival belt.

Where to stay in Berlin: best areas by trip type

Pick the area before you pick the property. In Berlin the walk out of the front door decides more of the trip than the room does.

Tiergarten & Potsdamer Platz

Typical nightly rate: Upscale four-star — Radisson Individuals with fitness and sauna listed per night

Best for couples · families · business trips

Park-edge Berlin west of Mitte — Lützowplatz and the Tiergarten lawn, with Potsdamer Platz a short walk and Brandenburg Gate within a couple of kilometres on our figures for the hotel we cover here.

Trade-off: You are not on Museum Island. Fernsehturm is 3.6 km and Museum Island 3 km on our hotel data provider’s figures for Hotel Berlin — fine on U-Bahn, not a stroll before coffee. Cleanliness scores 7.34 with dusty areas and carpet stains named.

Getting around: Walk Tiergarten and Potsdamer; Hauptbahnhof is 2.3 km on our figures; BER is 22.5 km.

Close to: Großer Tiergarten, Potsdamer Platz, Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag

  • Park side
  • Potsdamer access
  • Upscale four-star

Alexanderplatz & Mitte

Typical nightly rate: Midrange three-star for this sample per night

Best for first-time visitors · families · business trips

The tourist knot — Fernsehturm on the doorstep, Museum Island and Berliner Dom within a kilometre on our figures, and S-/U-Bahn under your feet.

Trade-off: It is busy and it is tourist-dense. H2’s guest analysis names cleanliness gaps, small rooms, poor pillows and high parking fees — the pin is the product, not the polish.

Getting around: Alexanderplatz station is 0.1 km on our figures for H2; Hackescher Markt 0.5 km; Brandenburg Gate 3 km.

Close to: Fernsehturm, Alexanderplatz, Museum Island, Berliner Dom

  • TV Tower
  • Museum Island access
  • Transit dense

East Side Gallery & Friedrichshain

Typical nightly rate: Midrange three-star — highest headline score in this Berlin sample per night

Best for couples · nightlife · first-time visitors

Stralauer Platz and the Wall open-air gallery belt — art, Spree edge and Friedrichshain evenings rather than a Mitte museum map.

Trade-off: The seed holds no POI distances for Schulz, so we cannot quote kilometre pins. Guest analysis still names small rooms, bathroom cleanliness and mixed value feelings despite 9.35 location and service scores.

Getting around: Plan on S-/U-Bahn and tram for Mitte icons; treat Friedrichshain as the daily walk, not Alexanderplatz.

Close to: East Side Gallery, Friedrichshain, Spree riverfront

  • East Side Gallery
  • Friedrichshain
  • Three-star

Hauptbahnhof belt

Typical nightly rate: Budget two-star hostel territory for this sample per night

Best for tight budgets · business trips · families

The arrival strip around Lehrter Straße — practical for trains and short stays, not a sightseeing postcard address.

Trade-off: Cleanliness and noise are live risks. a&o scores cleanliness 5.79 and overall experience 6.76 — some guests would not repeat. No POI rows in the seed for this property.

Getting around: Addressed for Hauptbahnhof convenience in guest location prose; Mitte icons need transit. We do not invent kilometre distances.

Close to: Berlin Hauptbahnhof

  • Train arrival
  • Budget two-star
  • A&O hostel

Popular Berlin searches

Berlin hotels — common questions

Which area of Berlin is best for a first visit?
Alexanderplatz if Museum Island and the TV Tower are the week; Tiergarten and Potsdamer if park walks and a quieter four-star base matter more; East Side Gallery if Friedrichshain is the mood. Hauptbahnhof works for train arrivals and a budget bed — not for a postcard first morning.
Why do two hotels have no landmark distances?
Because the seed holds no hotel_poi rows for Schulz Hotel Berlin Wall or a&o Berlin Hauptbahnhof. We will not invent kilometres. Guest location scores still exist — 9.35 at Schulz and 8.3 at a&o — and we cite those with scale and date.
Should I book Berlin hotels direct or through a booking site?
It varies by property and by date, which is why we never quote a nightly rate here. Check the partner link for your dates, then check the hotel’s own site before you confirm. Booking.com, Agoda, Trip.com and Vrbo are partners; those links may earn commission.
Why do you show guest scores but never a star-rating snippet in search results?
Because the scores are not ours. Every review number on this site comes from a supplier’s aggregate. We show the supplier score plainly, attributed and dated, and we never emit it as structured data.
Is cleanliness a real issue across these four?
Yes in the guest analysis — cleanliness is a named con at all four. Scores run from 7.85 at Schulz down to 5.79 at a&o. Read the category, not just the headline supplier rating.
