Where to stay in Copenhagen

Four Copenhagen hotels we have read the guest data on — a five-star harbour heritage stay, a four-star Portside Dolce, a three-star Generator and a two-star Wakeup on Borgergade — with the complaints written as plainly as the praise.

Where to stay in Copenhagen — the verdict

Stay on Toldbodgade if Nyhavn and the Opera are the week; stay at Portside if you want a modern four-star with metro access and accept the centro transfer; stay on Adelgade or Borgergade if a central budget or midrange bed is the brief.

Three of the four properties carry POI rows. Admiral puts Nyhavn at 0.2 km and the Opera at 0.3 km; Wakeup puts Strøget at 0.5 km and Nørreport at 0.4 km; Comwell puts Tivoli at 3 km and Nyhavn at 3.5 km. Generator has no POI rows — we refuse to invent kilometre figures and lean on its 9.22 location score and Adelgade address instead.

Guest scores in this sample disagree with their own prose. Comwell posts a flat 10 on location and 9.5 on service from 20,000 reviews while naming mould, reservation communication and inflexible booking policies; Generator’s cleanliness sits at 6.71 beside an 8.0 headline. We cite scale, count and date — never as structured data.

Nothing on this page quotes a nightly rate. We hold no live rates — the CTAs send you to Booking.com, Agoda, Trip.com or Vrbo. Those are partners; the links may earn commission.

Best for

  • First-time visitors choosing between Nyhavn harbour and a cheaper Indre By pin
  • Travellers weighing a five-star heritage stay against a four-star Portside with fitness listed
  • Anyone comparing Generator and Wakeup for a central budget base

Not for

  • Anyone who needs POI kilometre distances for every hotel — Generator has none in the seed
  • Guests who will not tolerate cleanliness complaints — all four carry them in guest analysis
  • Readers hunting a quoted nightly rate on this page

Best Hotels in Copenhagen

Copenhagen hotel choice is harbour glamour versus Portside practicality versus cheap Indre By. These four sit in three different bases on purpose — Toldbodgade waterfront, Nordhavn Portside, and the Adelgade / Borgergade centro belt.

Pick the area before you pick the property. In Copenhagen the walk out of the front door decides more of the trip than the room does.

Best for couples · first-time visitors · business trips

Waterfront heritage Copenhagen — Toldbodgade between Nyhavn, Amalienborg and the Opera, with Christiansborg and the National Museum within half a kilometre on our figures for the hotel we cover here.

Trade-off: You pay for the pin, and rooms are not automatically generous. Guest analysis names cramped rooms, inconsistent service and food-quality gaps beside a 9.15 location score.

Central practical Copenhagen — Adelgade and Borgergade pins for Strøget, Kongens Have and Nørreport access without five-star harbour rates.

Popular Copenhagen searches

Copenhagen hotels — common questions

Which area of Copenhagen is best for a first visit?
Nyhavn and harbour Indre By if the postcard walks are the week; Adelgade / Borgergade if you want a cheaper central pin for Strøget and Nørreport; Portside if you prefer a modern four-star and will use the metro into the classic centro.
Is Portside too far from Nyhavn?
For a Nyhavn-doorstep trip, yes — our hotel data provider puts Nyhavn 3.5 km from Comwell Portside. Guest analysis still scores location a flat 10 for metro access. Admiral puts Nyhavn at 0.2 km if the harbour walk is non-negotiable.
Should I book Copenhagen hotels direct or through a booking site?
It varies by property and by date, which is why we never quote a nightly rate here. Check the partner link for your dates, then check the hotel’s own site before you confirm. Booking.com, Agoda, Trip.com and Vrbo are partners; those links may earn commission.
Why do you show guest scores but never a star-rating snippet in search results?
Because the scores are not ours. Every review number on this site comes from a supplier’s aggregate. We show the supplier score plainly, attributed and dated, and we never emit it as structured data.
Are Copenhagen hotel rooms small?
Often in this sample. Admiral, Generator and Wakeup all carry room-size complaints in guest analysis. Budget for a compact Scandinavian double and the rest of the stay looks fairer.
