Where to stay in Faro

Four Faro hotels we have read the guest data on — two beside the old town, one on Praça D. Francisco Gomes, one on a central side street — with the complaints written as plainly as the praise.

Where to stay in Faro — the verdict

Stay by the old town if Cidade Velha, Carmo and Ria Formosa access are the week; stay on Praça D. Francisco Gomes if you want marina views at a four-star band; stay on Rua Miguel Bombarda if you want the highest headline score at the lowest star class and will tolerate breakfast inconsistency.

Two of the four carry our hotel data provider point-of-interest distances in our seed: 3HB Faro puts Faro Old Town at 0.4 km, Igreja do Carmo at 0.5 km and Ria Formosa Natural Park at 0.9 km; AP Eva Senses puts the old town and cathedral at 0.3 km and Praia de Faro at 4.5 km. Occidental Faro and Hotel Made inn Faro have no POI rows — we judge them on address, facilities and guest scores, not invented walks.

Guest scores in this sample are unusually high at the top and unusually split underneath. 3HB Faro posts 9.8 out of 10 from 4,003 reviews with flat 9.68s and 10s across most categories; AP Eva Senses carries the same 8.4 headline as Occidental but room quality sits at 7.15 with mold in the bathroom named in the analysis. We cite the number, the sample size, the date and the complaint.

Nothing on this page quotes a nightly rate. We hold no live rates for these properties, and a price baked into a static page is wrong by the next morning — the CTAs send you to Booking.com, Agoda, Trip.com or Vrbo so you see the real number for your dates. Best for

  • Travellers using Faro as an Algarve base who want the old town walkable rather than a resort strip elsewhere
  • Anyone arriving at Faro Airport (FAO) who will use a shuttle, taxi or train rather than a hire car in the centre
  • Couples and families choosing between a five-star rooftop pool and a two-star central pin

Not for

  • Beach-first holidays — Praia de Faro is 4.5–6 km from the hotels with POI data here, not a doorstep swim
  • Anyone expecting flawless cleanliness at every band — AP Eva and Occidental both carry cleanliness complaints in our hotel data provider’s guest analysis
  • Readers hunting a quoted nightly rate on this page — we do not publish one; check the partner for your dates

Best Hotels in Faro

Faro is an Algarve capital where the wrong pin still costs you a taxi to the Cidade Velha or the airport. These four sit in three different bases on purpose: old-town luxury, old-town four-star, marina-square midrange, and a two-star practical stay.

Where to stay in Faro: best areas by trip type

Pick the area before you pick the property. In Faro the walk out of the front door decides more of the trip than the room does.

Old Town & Cidade Velha

Typical nightly rate: Upscale four-star through luxury five-star — the dearest band of the three areas here per night

Best for first-time visitors · couples · families

The walled centre and Carmo knot — cathedral lanes, Chapel of Bones, municipal museum and Ria Formosa on the edge. Both hotels we cover here carry POI distances to the old town under half a kilometre.

Trade-off: Parking is the recurring gripe — 3HB names parking costs as a con and AP Eva’s location summary mentions minor parking challenges. You are in the centre, not at the beach.

Getting around: Faro train station is 0.6–0.7 km from the hotels with POI data here; the airport is 4.2–4.5 km. An airport shuttle is listed at both properties.

Close to: Faro Old Town (Cidade Velha), Igreja do Carmo — Chapel of Bones, Ria Formosa Natural Park, Museu Municipal de Faro, Faro Train Station

Praça & Marina

Typical nightly rate: Midrange four-star territory for this sample per night

Best for couples · first-time visitors

Praça D. Francisco Gomes — rooftop pool and restaurant views over the old town, marina and Ria Formosa, in a four-star band without supplier POI distances in our seed.

Trade-off: Guest data is frank about odour issues in common areas, parking difficulties and noise in some rooms — location scores 8.89 out of 10, but cleanliness sits at 7.88.

Getting around: Occidental Faro lists an airport shuttle and parking; our seed holds no POI kilometre rows for this property, so we will not invent walks to the old town or the beach.

  • Marina views
  • Rooftop pool
  • Central

Central practical

Typical nightly rate: Budget two-star — the cheapest official star class in this sample per night

Best for tight budgets · couples

Rua Miguel Bombarda — a two-star central pin with strong location and service scores, lean facilities and no supplier POI distances in our seed.

Trade-off: You are not buying a pool, spa or restaurant. Inconsistent breakfast service and room noise are named cons; amenities score 8.28 out of 10 against an 8.8 headline supplier rating.

Getting around: Guest location scores 9.3 out of 10 and the prose calls the pin excellent, but without POI rows we refuse to quote metres to the old town or the airport.

The full guide

Faro hotels — this page

Until a full Faro destination hub exists, this hotels page is the planning guide: three neighbourhood bases, four verdicts, and two head-to-head comparisons.

Faro hotels — this page

Straight comparisons

Hand-picked pairs, not every possible pair. Each of these exists because it is a decision readers in Faro genuinely have to make.

  • 3HB Faro vs AP Eva Senses

Two old-town hotels a few streets apart — one five-star with spa, one four-star with a rooftop pool — answering whether the extra star class erases the cleanliness gap.

  • Occidental Faro vs Hotel Made inn Faro

Four-star Praça views against a two-star central pin — neither has POI distances in our seed, so the comparison is facilities and guest scores, not invented walks.

Popular Faro searches

Faro hotels — common questions

Which area of Faro is best for a first visit?
Old Town and Cidade Velha if you want the cathedral, Carmo and Ria Formosa on foot — our hotel data provider puts the old town at 0.3–0.4 km from the two hotels with POI data there. Praça D. Francisco Gomes if marina views matter more than measured walks; we have no POI kilometres for Occidental Faro.
Is Faro a beach hotel destination?
Not from these pins. Praia de Faro is 4.5 km from AP Eva Senses and 6 km from 3HB Faro on our hotel data provider’s figures. Pick Faro for the old town and lagoon access; pick elsewhere on the Algarve for a sand-first week.
Should I book Faro hotels direct or through a booking site?
It varies by property and by date, which is why we never quote a nightly rate here. Check the partner link for your dates, then check the hotel’s own site before you confirm — direct rates sometimes include breakfast or a cancellation window the aggregated rate does not. Booking.com, Agoda, Trip.com and Vrbo are partners; those links may earn commission.
Why do you show guest scores but never invent distances for every hotel?
Because our seed only has our hotel data provider point-of-interest distances for 3HB Faro and AP Eva Senses among these four. Inventing metres for Occidental Faro or Hotel Made inn Faro would be fiction. We show supplier scores with scale, count and date, and we only cite distances the payload actually returns.
Which Faro hotel has the best guest scores?
3HB Faro on the headline number — 9.8 out of 10 from 4,003 reviews as of 10 January 2026 — with service and overall experience both at 10. Hotel Made inn Faro is next at 8.8 from 5,551 reviews as of 9 January 2026, at a two-star band with leaner facilities. AP Eva and Occidental both sit at 8.4; read the category detail before you treat that as a tie.
