Where to stay in Istanbul

Four Istanbul hotels we have read the guest data on — one in Şişli, one on the Bosphorus at Beşiktaş, one by Kazlıçeşme Marmaray, one in Florya — with the complaints written as plainly as the praise.

Should you book this Istanbul stay?

Where to stay in Istanbul — the verdict

Stay in Beşiktaş if Dolmabahçe and the Bosphorus are the week; stay in Şişli if Taksim and the metro knot matter; stay at Kazlıçeşme if Sultanahmet is a Marmaray ride away and you want newer stock; stay in Florya if the aquarium and the mall beat the Old City on your map.

The geography gap is brutal. Crowne Plaza Florya puts Hagia Sophia at 15 km and Taksim at 17 km on our hotel data provider’s figures; Conrad Istanbul Bosphorus puts Dolmabahçe Palace at 0.5 km and Hagia Sophia at 4.6 km. Those are not two versions of the same trip — one is a seafront suburban base, one is a Bosphorus-side city hotel.

Guest scores in this sample disagree with their own prose more than once. Hilton Bomonti posts flat 10s on service and overall experience while cleanliness sits at 8.08 with room-quality complaints; Radisson Ottomare carries no official star classification in our seed yet posts a 9.6 out of 10 supplier score beside breakfast and cleanliness niggles. We cite both the number and the complaint, dated, and we never restate either as structured data.

Nothing on this page quotes a nightly rate. We hold no live rates for these properties, and a price baked into a static page is wrong by the next morning — the CTAs send you to Booking.com, Agoda, Trip.com or Vrbo so you see the real number for your dates. Those are partners; the links may earn commission.

Best for

  • First-time visitors choosing between a Bosphorus-side base and a Sultanahmet-accessible Marmaray pin
  • Travellers arriving at IST who will taxi or metro rather than drive the historic peninsula
  • Families weighing a Florya aquarium stay against a central five-star with a pool

Not for

  • Anyone expecting one hotel to cover Sultanahmet, Taksim and the Asian shore without transfers — Istanbul punishes that assumption
  • Drivers — parking is listed at these properties but the city’s traffic is not a holiday feature
  • Readers hunting a quoted nightly rate on this page — we do not publish one; check the partner for your dates

Best Hotels in Istanbul

Istanbul is two cities stitched together by ferries, Marmaray and traffic. Pick the base for the days you actually want: Taksim and Dolmabahçe walks, Sultanahmet on a short train hop, or a seafront night far from the historic core. These four sit in four different bases on purpose.

Where to stay in Istanbul: best areas by trip type

Pick the area before you pick the property. In Istanbul the walk out of the front door decides more of the trip than the room does.

Şişli & Bomonti

Typical nightly rate: Luxury five-star territory for this sample per night

Best for business trips · couples · first-time visitors

The north-side business and shopping belt — Şişli–Mecidiyeköy metro within walking distance, Taksim 2.2 km, and a calmer night than the historic peninsula’s tourist crush.

Trade-off: You are not on the Bosphorus waterfront and Hagia Sophia is 5.5 km away. Guest data at the Hilton we cover still names cleanliness issues and tired rooms despite strong location scores.

Getting around: Şişli–Mecidiyeköy metro is 0.6 km on our hotel data provider’s figures; Taksim Square is 2.2 km. IST is 35 km — plan a transfer, not a stroll.

Close to: Taksim Square, Dolmabahçe Palace, Galata Tower, Şişli–Mecidiyeköy Metro

  • Metro dense
  • Taksim access
  • Five-star chain

Beşiktaş & Bosphorus

Typical nightly rate: Luxury five-star — the strongest location band in this sample for Dolmabahçe per night

Best for couples · first-time visitors · business trips

The European waterfront between Dolmabahçe and Ortaköy — palace walks, Kabataş ferries and tram, and the Bosphorus as the front lawn rather than a view from fifteen kilometres out.

Trade-off: Sultanahmet is still 4.6 km away. The Conrad we cover carries review-pressure and management complaints in the guest analysis despite headline scores in the nines.

Getting around: Kabataş tram and funicular hub is 0.8 km; Ortaköy is 1.2 km. Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazaar are a taxi or tram ride, not a morning stroll from every address here.

Close to: Dolmabahçe Palace, Ortaköy Mosque, Kabataş, 15 July Martyrs Bridge

  • Bosphorus side
  • Palace walks
  • Ferry access

Kazlıçeşme & Historic Corridor

Typical nightly rate: Upscale territory — strong scores without a published star class in our seed for the Radisson we cover per night

Best for families · first-time visitors · tight budgets

The Marmaray-side belt west of the peninsula — Kazlıçeşme station 0.3 km puts Sultanahmet, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı within a few kilometres without staying in the densest tourist blocks.

Trade-off: Taksim is 7.5 km and Galata Tower 6 km. You trade waterfront glamour for rail access and newer-build comfort; breakfast quality is a named weak spot in the guest data.

Getting around: Kazlıçeşme Marmaray is 0.3 km. Hagia Sophia is 4 km and the Grand Bazaar 4.6 km on our hotel data provider’s figures — useful if your days are museum-heavy.

Close to: Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace, Grand Bazaar, Kazlıçeşme Marmaray

  • Marmaray access
  • Historic corridor
  • Pool listed

Florya & Seafront

Typical nightly rate: Luxury five-star IHG territory for this sample per night

Best for families · couples

The western seafront and mall belt — Istanbul Aquarium and Aqua Florya at 0.6 km, Marmaray at the same distance, and a suburban night far from Sultanahmet.

Trade-off: Hagia Sophia is 15 km and Taksim 17 km. You are buying aquarium-and-mall practicality and an airport-shuttle-listed stay, not a historic-peninsula walk out of the door.

Getting around: Florya Marmaray is 0.6 km. IST is 35 km. The historic core is a long Marmaray or taxi ride — budget the transfer into every day you plan in Sultanahmet.

Close to: İstanbul Akvaryum, Aqua Florya, Florya Marmaray, Atatürk Köşkü

  • Aquarium
  • Seafront
  • Mall adjacent

Popular Istanbul searches

Istanbul hotels — common questions

Which area of Istanbul is best for a first visit?
Beşiktaş if Dolmabahçe and the Bosphorus are the week; Kazlıçeşme if Sultanahmet is the map and you want Marmaray access without sleeping in the densest tourist blocks. Şişli suits Taksim and metro-first trips; Florya suits families centred on the aquarium, not the Old City.
Is Florya too far from the historic sights?
For a Sultanahmet-heavy itinerary, yes — our hotel data provider puts Hagia Sophia at 15 km from Crowne Plaza Florya. For an aquarium-and-mall week with occasional Marmaray runs into town, it is a deliberate trade, not a compromise that satisfies both.
Should I book Istanbul hotels direct or through a booking site?
It varies by property and by date, which is why we never quote a nightly rate here. Check the partner link for your dates, then check the hotel’s own site before you confirm — direct rates sometimes include breakfast or a cancellation window the aggregated rate does not. Booking.com, Agoda, Trip.com and Vrbo are partners; those links may earn commission.
Why do you show guest scores but never a star-rating snippet in search results?
Because the scores are not ours. Every review number on this site comes from a supplier’s aggregate, and Google’s review-snippet guidance says not to aggregate ratings from other websites and that ratings must come from your own users. We show the supplier score plainly, attributed and dated, and we never emit it as structured data.
Why does one hotel on this page have no star classification?
Radisson Blu Hotel Istanbul Ottomare carries no official star classification in our seed — we do not invent one. We judge it on guest scores, facilities and address like the others, and we name the gap plainly wherever stars would normally appear.
