Where to stay in Paris — the verdict

Stay by the Opéra if you want Haussmann shopping and a short Métro hop to everything; stay in Les Halles if the Louvre and Notre-Dame are the week; stay on rue de Vaugirard if you want Luxembourg Gardens and a quieter night.

Two of the four properties sit within 0.2 km of Palais Garnier on our hotel data provider’s own figures, which is why Opéra gets two slots. The Les Halles Novotel puts the Louvre at 0.7 km and Notre-Dame at 1.1 km. The Left Bank pick puts Luxembourg Gardens at 0.3 km. Those are three different trips, not three versions of the same one.

Guest scores in this sample disagree with their own prose more than once. The five-star InterContinental carries a 9.0 out of 10 supplier rating from 3,700 reviews while its cleanliness and room-quality summaries describe poor room conditions; the Left Bank four-star posts flat 10s across every category while the same analysis names overheated and small rooms. Haussmann Paris at its densest: Palais Garnier on the doorstep, Galeries Lafayette a few minutes’ walk, and Métro lines that stitch the Right Bank together without a transfer.

Trade-off: It is busy and it is noisy. Construction noise shows up in the guest data for one of the two hotels here, and the boulevards do not go quiet after dinner.

Getting around: Opéra, Havre–Caumartin and Auber put you on multiple Métro and RER lines within a short walk — most of central Paris is one ride, not two.

Best for couples · first-time visitors

Left Bank residential Paris: Luxembourg Gardens as the front lawn, Saint-Sulpice and the Latin Quarter within walking distance, and evenings that feel local rather than staged.

Trade-off: You are further from the Right Bank museum cluster. The Louvre is 2.3 km and Notre-Dame 2.8 km on our hotel data provider’s figures for the hotel we cover here — fine on Métro, not a stroll before coffee.

Getting around: Saint-Placide, Rennes and Notre-Dame-des-Champs cover the 4 and 12; Luxembourg RER is useful for Orly and the south.

Is the Left Bank too far from the main sights?
For a Louvre-heavy itinerary, yes — our hotel data provider puts the Louvre 2.3 km from the Left Bank hotel we cover. For a trip built around Luxembourg Gardens, Saint-Germain and the Latin Quarter, it is the better base and a quieter night.
