Why these two, and not any two

Same neighbourhood, same landmark walks, same shortlist. When two hotels are this substitutable the comparison is useful; pairing Opéra with a Left Bank address would not be.

We publish a handful of comparisons per city, chosen by an editor. We do not generate a page for every possible pairing: at thirty hotels that would be 435 near-identical pages per city, and at five hundred it would be 124,750 for one city alone — which is a doorway-page pattern, not a service to anybody trying to pick a hotel.

Should you book this hotel?

Which one to book

Take the Saint-Pétersbourg for room quality and a more coherent guest story; take the InterContinental if the five-star facilities list and the 0.1 km Opéra pin are non-negotiable.

Room quality is the swing category: 8.8 out of 10 at the Saint-Pétersbourg against 7.84 at the InterContinental. Cleanliness follows the same pattern, 8.3 against 8.38 is close on the number, but the InterContinental’s cleanliness summary describes poor room conditions while the Saint-Pétersbourg’s is milder. Paying five-star money for the weaker room story needs a reason beyond the badge.

The InterContinental wins on facilities and raw location score. It lists a restaurant, private parking and a sauna; the Saint-Pétersbourg lists none of those. Location is 10 out of 10 against 9.3, with Palais Garnier at 0.1 km against 0.2 km. Food and beverage is also a blowout — 9.88 against 8.8 — driven by breakfast praise at the InterContinental.

Sample size favours the four-star: 5,826 reviews against 3,700, both on a /10 scale, captured December 2025 and January 2026 respectively. The Saint-Pétersbourg’s supplier rating is 8.8; the InterContinental’s is 9.0. That headline gap is smaller than the room-quality gap underneath it.

Practical edges: Saint-Pétersbourg checks in from 02:00 PM and lists pets as allowed; the InterContinental checks in from 03:00 PM, publishes a 11:30 PM latest arrival, and does not list pets. Both list a spa/wellness centre and a fitness centre. Neither lists a swimming pool.

Best for

  • Choosing an Opéra base and deciding whether the five-star premium is worth it
  • Travellers comparing IHG loyalty against an independent four-star with a spa

Not for

  • Anyone who needs a pool — neither lists one
  • Travellers looking for a Left Bank or Louvre-doorstep address — both are Opéra

Point by point

Every row is checkable against the supplier data on the two property pages. “Level” is a real answer and is used — a comparison where one side wins every row is usually a comparison somebody wrote backwards from the conclusion.

Common questions

Which Opéra hotel has better rooms?
On our hotel data provider’s guest scores, the Saint-Pétersbourg. Room quality is 8.8 out of 10 against 7.84 at the InterContinental, and the InterContinental’s own cleanliness summary describes poor room conditions. The InterContinental still wins on facilities and the closer Opéra pin.
Is the five-star worth the extra spend?
Only if you specifically want the restaurant, private parking, sauna and IHG badge. Those are real facility differences. If you are paying for a quieter guest story on room quality, the four-star is the more coherent buy.
