Where to stay in Bangkok: the old town, Banglamphu, Chinatown, the riverside, Silom, Siam and Sukhumvit compared on BTS, MRT and boat links, noise and airports.

Key takeaways

Where should you stay in Bangkok?

Link to this answer

For a first visit, stay near a BTS station in Siam, Silom or lower Sukhumvit, or by the river near Saphan Taksin for boats to the Grand Palace. Choose the old town or Banglamphu for temples on foot, Chinatown for food, and Sukhumvit from Nana to Thong Lo for nightlife and the widest choice of rooms.

Bangkok’s traffic makes the rail and boat network the thing to plan around. The BTS runs the Sukhumvit and Silom lines (TAT, BTS), the MRT Blue Line has 38 stations and runs from 6am to midnight (MRT), and the Grand Palace’s own directions use the orange-flag Chao Phraya Express Boat from Sathorn Pier, beside BTS Saphan Taksin (Grand Palace).

Heat is the other constant. The Thai Meteorological Department’s 1991–2020 normals for Bangkok Metropolis keep the mean daily high at 32.3°C or above in every month, peaking at 35.7°C in April (TMD). A short, shaded walk to a station is worth more than a cheaper room a long walk from one.

How do Bangkok’s main areas compare?

Link to this answer

The table compares seven bases on what each suits, the rail and boat links that serve it, walkability, noise, relative price and the main watch-out. Siam, Silom and Sukhumvit lead for rail links, the old town and Banglamphu for temples, Chinatown for food, and the riverside for calm and views.

Station names come from the BTS route map (BTS), BEM’s MRT system page (MRT), the Grand Palace’s directions (Grand Palace) and Airports of Thailand (AOT). TAT’s September 2026 update named Siam and Ratchaprasong, Chinatown, Talat Noi and Song Wat among the visitor areas that stayed accessible during the floods (TAT).

“Price feel” is our relative description of the typical hotel mix, not a quote, and “walkability” describes how much of a first visit you can do on foot from that base. Compare the total for your dates, including taxes and service charges.

Should you stay in the old town or Banglamphu?

Stay in Rattanakosin if temples are your priority: the Grand Palace opens at 8.30am and Wat Pho is a short walk away, so you can beat the heat and the queues. Banglamphu, around Khao San Road, is cheaper and livelier, with a direct airport bus. Both rely on boats, MRT Sanam Chai and rides rather than the BTS.

The Grand Palace opens daily from 8.30am to 4.30pm and sells tickets from 8.30am to 3.30pm for 500 baht, including Wat Phra Kaew and the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles (Grand Palace). Its dress code rules out sleeveless shirts, short, torn or tight trousers, mini skirts and see-through tops, and drones are banned over the site (Grand Palace). Staying nearby means you can arrive at opening, before the midday heat.

The palace gives three ways in: MRT Sanam Chai exit 1; the orange-flag express boat from Sathorn Pier to Tha Chang (N9); or the boat to Tha Tien (N8), from which Wat Pho is about ten minutes’ walk (Grand Palace). Its calendar warns that dates can be changed or added, so check it before a visit near a royal ceremony (Grand Palace).

Banglamphu trades quiet for price and nightlife. Airports of Thailand lists bus route S1 from Suvarnabhumi to Khao San Road (Sanam Luang), from Level 1, Gate 7, between 6am and 8pm (AOT). Light sleepers should stay a few streets back from Khao San Road and ask for a room away from the street.

Is Chinatown or the riverside a better base?

Link to this answer

Chinatown suits food lovers who do not mind crowds, and MRT Wat Mangkon puts the Blue Line on its doorstep. The riverside near Saphan Taksin suits travellers who want calm, views and the express boat to the Grand Palace, with the BTS at the pier. Riverside hotels cost more, and some sit on the far bank.

BEM’s MRT page describes the Blue Line extension that starts at Wat Mangkon and runs to Lak Song through 11 stations, alongside the original Hua Lamphong–Bang Sue section, with trains from 6am to midnight (MRT). That makes Chinatown one of the few historic districts with an underground station, useful in the heat and the rain.

On the river, the Grand Palace’s directions start at BTS Saphan Taksin exit 2 and Sathorn Pier, below the bridge (Grand Palace), and the BTS route map shows the Gold Line serving the west bank from Krung Thon Buri to Charoen Nakhon (BTS). Check whether a riverside hotel is on your side of the river before you book.

Both areas stayed accessible in the late-September 2026 floods, when TAT named Chinatown, Talat Noi and Song Wat among the open visitor areas (TAT). Chinatown is at its busiest around Chinese New Year, on 6 February 2027 (HKO).

Should you stay in Silom or Siam?

Link to this answer

Silom and Sathorn suit travellers who want restaurants, nightlife and a BTS Silom Line stop, with quieter streets towards Sathorn. Siam and Ratchaprasong suit shoppers and families, because Siam is where the two BTS lines meet. Both become Songkran water zones in mid-April, with Silom Road events on 12–14 April in 2026.

The BTS route map places Ratchadamri, Sala Daeng, Chong Nonsi and Surasak on the line from Siam towards Saphan Taksin, with National Stadium one stop west and Siam as the central station shared with the Sukhumvit line (BTS). From either area, the old town is a boat or MRT ride away and Sukhumvit a few stops along the BTS.

Songkran changes these neighbourhoods. For 2026, TAT said Silom and Siam Square would again become major water-celebration zones, with events on Silom Road on 12–14 April, at Siam Square on 12–15 April and a Songkran parade on Silom Road on 14 April (TAT). The Bank of Thailand lists 13–15 April 2027 as the Songkran holidays (Bank of Thailand).

If you want to stay dry that week, choose the riverside or a quiet Sukhumvit side street, and seal your phone and passport in a waterproof pouch whenever you step out.

Is Sukhumvit a good place to stay in Bangkok?

Link to this answer

Yes, for nightlife, international dining and the widest range of rooms. Stay within a short walk of a BTS station between Nana and Thong Lo, because the side streets are long and the main road is often jammed. The streets get calmer further east, and Ari, north of Siam on the same line, is quieter still.

The BTS route map lists Chit Lom, Nana, Asok, Phrom Phong and Thong Lo east of Siam on the Sukhumvit line, and Victory Monument, Saphan Khwai and Ari to the north, with Phaya Thai between them (BTS). TAT has described Phaya Thai as the city end of the Airport Rail Link (TAT), which makes upper Sukhumvit and Ari simple to reach from Suvarnabhumi.

Nightlife brings its own risks. The FCDO says drink spiking happens in tourist areas, affecting men and women, and that sexual assaults are most often reported near bars late at night. Do not leave drinks unattended, and book an app ride home rather than accepting a lift in an unlicensed vehicle.

How do you get from Bangkok’s airports to each area?

Link to this answer

From Suvarnabhumi, the Airport Rail Link runs from 5.30am to midnight towards Phaya Thai, and metered taxis queue on Level 1 with a 50-baht airport surcharge. From Don Mueang, the SRT Red Line reaches Krung Thep Aphiwat in 17 minutes for 33 baht. For old-town hotels, a taxi is usually simplest.

Airports of Thailand puts the Airport Rail Link station on Level B1, open from 5.30am to midnight, and the public taxi rank on Level 1 between Gates 4 and 7, where fares start at 35 or 40 baht on the meter plus a 50-baht airport surcharge paid to the driver (AOT). For Don Mueang, SRT Electrified Train’s fare calculator gives 17 minutes and 33 baht to Krung Thep Aphiwat (SRTET).

How do floods, festivals and safety affect where you stay?

Link to this answer

The late-September 2026 floods showed the value of a rail-side base: the FCDO says all 50 Bangkok districts were declared disaster-affected areas, while TAT reported trains running again within days. Songkran soaks Silom and Siam in mid-April. Anywhere in the city, watch for bag-snatchers on motorbikes and never leave a drink unattended.

The FCDO says severe flooding affected Bangkok and neighbouring provinces after heavy rain, that road closures and flooding of low-lying areas are possible, and that the government declared special holidays on 28 and 29 September. TAT’s 29 September update said both airports had stayed open and the BTS, MRT, Airport Rail Link and Red Line were running (TAT). TMD’s normals make September the wettest month, at 335.9 mm (TMD).

The FCDO advises carrying valuables securely against bag-snatchers on motorbikes, taking care in open transport such as tuk-tuks, and never handing over your passport as a deposit. It adds that vapes and e-cigarettes are illegal, with fines typically of 5,000 to 30,000 baht, that alcohol sales are restricted between midnight and 11am outside licensed venues, and that criticising the monarchy carries a long prison sentence.

How should you book a hotel in Bangkok?

Pick the area first, then shortlist hotels by the walk to the nearest BTS or MRT station or pier. In September and October, choose a refundable rate and check how the hotel handled recent flooding; for Songkran and New Year, book early. Compare the same room’s total on more than one site before paying.

Price the identical room on two sites; our comparison of Booking.com vs Agoda vs Hotels.com explains where totals and cancellation terms tend to differ. Read reviews from the last few months for noise, street access and air conditioning, and from the same season as your trip.

Before you fly, complete Thailand’s digital arrival card within the three days before arrival; the FCDO says visa-exempt visitors entering from 15 September 2026 can stay up to 30 days for tourism. Our TDAC guide and Thailand visa exemption rules explain both.

Which Bangkok area should you choose?

Link to this answer

Choose Siam or Silom for a central first visit on the BTS, Sukhumvit for nightlife and choice, the riverside for calm and boats, Chinatown for food, and the old town or Banglamphu if temples come first. Whatever you pick, stay close to a station or pier, and plan around Songkran and the September–October rains.

If you are torn, split the stay: start by the river or in the old town for the temple days, then move to Siam or Sukhumvit for shopping and nightlife. Bangkok is large but its rail lines make one move painless.

Next steps: pace your days with the Bangkok 3-day itinerary or the 7-day plan, learn the network in getting around Bangkok, read things to do in Bangkok, and see the Bangkok destination guide for budgets.
