Booking.com vs Agoda vs Hotels.com 2026: transparent same-hotel pricing methodology across 10 cities, logged-in versus logged-out checks, Genius/Agoda VIP notes and who wins on refundable rates.
Booking.com, Agoda or Hotels.com — which is cheapest in 2026?
There is no permanent winner. In our July 2026 same-hotel desk test across ten cities, Agoda often led cash prices in parts of Asia, Booking.com more often matched or beat refundable European stays once Genius applied, and Hotels.com sometimes won only after Rewards night maths — not the sticker rate. Always dual-quote and check logged-out prices.
Online travel agencies (OTAs) price the same property differently by market, currency, member tier, mobile app, and whether cookies think you are a returning buyer. That is why a screenshot from a friend in Bangkok can mislead a searcher in Manchester. This page is a battlefield comparison with a transparent methodology — not a claim that one brand always wins. For wider hotel shopping, start with hotel deals and the metasearch showdown in Hotellook vs Trivago vs Kayak.
Honest disclosure up front: Booking.com, Agoda and Hotellook are TravelShifu partners. Hotels.com is covered editorially without a partner CTA on this page. Affiliate relationships do not change the test design; they do mean we earn a commission if you book through labelled partner links, at no extra cost to you.
How did we compare Booking.com, Agoda and Hotels.com?
We priced the same named hotel, same room type label, same cancellation band and same guest count for two midweek nights in ten cities, once logged out in a clean browser profile and once logged in with a free member account where available. We recorded total stay price including mandatory taxes shown at checkout, noted currency, and flagged when a cheaper non-refundable rate was the only way an OTA looked cheaper.
Methodology box (desk test, July 2026): cities were London, Paris, Rome, Lisbon, New York, Tokyo, Bangkok, Singapore, Dubai and Sydney. We chose mid-scale branded or well-reviewed independents with inventory on all three OTAs. Searches used the same dates ±0 days, two adults, one room. Property availability changes hourly; re-run the script for your dates rather than trusting our rank order.
We did not invent first-person stays. No writer claimed to have slept in these rooms for this test. Results are checkout totals from public web flows. Mobile-app-only rates and private Genius/VIP stacks can diverge — if your app shows a different number, that is expected, not a failure of the method.
Logged-in versus logged-out mattered. In several European rows, Booking.com’s Genius discount appeared only after login. In several Asian rows, Agoda’s member price beat the logged-out rack even when Booking matched the public rate. Hotels.com Rewards free-night credit was scored separately so a higher sticker did not auto-lose if the tenth-night maths still favoured it for collectors.
Currency traps were recorded. Some OTAs displayed local currency while charging a card in GBP or USD with a conversion margin. We noted the displayed checkout currency and preferred matching the card’s billing currency when the spread looked wide. Pair hotel savings with fee-sensible cards from our money guides and keep medical cover in best travel insurance 2026.
- Same hotel + same dates + same cancellation band
- Ten cities; midweek two-night stay
- Logged-out clean profile, then logged-in member check
- Total including mandatory taxes shown at checkout
- No secret personal stays — desk methodology only
What did the same-hotel price test show?
Across the ten-city snapshot, Agoda most often posted the lowest refundable-comparable cash total in Bangkok, Singapore and Tokyo rows; Booking.com most often led or tied in London, Paris and Lisbon once Genius applied; Hotels.com was rarely the pure cash winner but occasionally matched after member pricing. Treat every cell as illustrative — re-price your property tonight.
The table below collapses a wider spreadsheet into a planning asset: who tended to win cash on refundable-like rates, and what broke the comparison. Gaps of under roughly 3% were scored as ties because taxes and currency rounding swing that much between refreshes.
When one OTA only won on a stricter non-refundable rate, we did not crown it the winner for travellers who need free cancellation. Flexibility has a price; our cheap flights 21 ways mindset applies to hotels too — the cheapest inflexible rate is not always the cheapest trip.
Hotellook and other metasearch tools help you spot which OTA is live-cheapest without opening twelve tabs. Use them as a radar, then complete booking on the OTA or hotel site that shows the clearest cancellation text. See also Hotellook vs Trivago vs Kayak.
Worked habit for a Saturday booking: open Hotellook or another meta radar, shortlist two properties, then price each on Booking.com, Agoda and the hotel site within fifteen minutes. If Hotels.com appears cheaper only after assuming a future free night you may never earn, ignore Rewards mythology for this stay. Currency switches that ‘save’ 1% usually are not worth the card conversion pain.
Corporate rates, mobile-only flashes and packaged flight+hotel deals sit outside this test. If your company travel tool mandates a channel, follow policy. Leisure travellers should still keep a simple spreadsheet column for cancellation deadline, prepaid versus pay-at-property, and whether breakfast is truly included. Breakfast inclusions are mislabelled surprisingly often.
Review scores are not interchangeable across OTAs because samples differ. Prefer recent comments about noise, air-conditioning and walkability over raw averages. A 9.1 with twenty reviews can lose to an 8.6 with two thousand when you need predictability on a short city break.
| City (illustrative July 2026 desk test) | Cash leader (refundable-like) | Logged-in effect | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| London | Booking.com (Genius) or tie | Genius often needed | Check hotel site too |
| Paris | Booking.com or tie | Member rate mattered | Watch city tax line |
| Rome | Tie / Booking.com | Modest | Summer dates volatile |
| Lisbon | Booking.com | Genius helped | Small sample property |
| New York | Tie / Hotels.com member | Rewards maths separate | Resort fees common |
| Tokyo | Agoda or tie | Agoda member stack | Confirm English rate rules |
| Bangkok | Agoda | Strong on Agoda VIP | Large OTA spreads |
| Singapore | Agoda or tie | Member pricing | Compare SGD vs GBP view |
| Dubai | Tie | Variable | Watch tourism dirham fees |
| Sydney | Tie / Booking.com | Modest | AUD display check |
How do Genius, Agoda VIP and Hotels.com Rewards change the maths?
Member tiers can flip the winner after login. Booking.com Genius and Agoda VIP-style tiers usually cut the stay price or add breakfast; Hotels.com Rewards is a collect-and-redeem engine where the tenth night logic can justify a slightly higher sticker. Always price the refundable band you will actually book — a non-refundable ‘win’ is a different product.
Genius tiers historically apply percentage discounts and occasional free breakfast at participating properties. Agoda's member pricing is similarly property-specific. Neither programme replaces elite status at a hotel chain; you are still an OTA guest for many operational perks. Current tier thresholds and discount sizes change — read the live account page.
Hotels.com Rewards (or its successor branding in your market) typically credits nights toward a free-night benefit. That only wins if you concentrate enough stays and the free-night value exceeds the cash you overpaid versus Agoda or Booking on earlier trips. Casual one-off bookers should ignore Rewards mythology and take the clear cash winner.
Cancellation windows differ even when the room name matches. Screenshot the free-cancellation deadline in local hotel time. If you are stacking tours the same week, keep flexibility aligned with tickets from GetYourGuide vs Viator vs Klook.
Payment timing varies: some rates pre-pay the OTA; others collect at the property. Prepay can look cheaper and hurt more when plans change. For multi-country trips, keep data online with an eSIM from Airalo vs Yesim vs Drimsim or best eSIM for travel 2026 so you can modify bookings on the road.
Peak school holidays compress free-cancellation windows. If your flights are still on hold, prefer fully refundable hotel rates even when Agoda’s non-refundable tile looks heroic. The cost of one changed flight plus a lost hotel prepay erases a year of OTA optimisation. Align hotel flexibility with tour tickets bought via GetYourGuide, Viator or Klook on the same trip.
Message the property through the OTA only for operational questions you can tolerate losing if chat transcripts vanish; keep your own PDF confirmations. For multi-city trips, avoid stacking four prepaid non-refundable nights in a row unless every flight is ticketed and immutable.
Should you book the hotel direct instead?
Price the hotel’s own site after you know the best OTA total. Direct sometimes matches and adds flexibility, points or easier changes; sometimes it is simply higher. Chain elites often prefer direct for status credit — OTA bookings may not count the same way. Run both, then decide with cancellation text in hand.
Status credit and suite upgrades usually favour direct or channel-of-record rules published by each chain. If you are chasing elite nights, an OTA ‘save’ of £8 can be expensive. If you have no status and need a cancellable city break, the OTA with the clearest refund policy often wins.
Rate parity is imperfect. Opaque or member-only channels still create gaps. A clean method is: metasearch radar → top two OTAs logged out and in → hotel official site → book the best combination of price and terms.
For car-heavy itineraries after the hotel decision, compare brokers in DiscoverCars vs Rentalcars vs EconomyBookings rather than bolting a random car onto the hotel checkout upsell.
Choose Booking.com, Agoda or Hotels.com — who should pick which?
Choose Agoda when your trip is Asia-heavy and member pricing keeps winning cash checks. Choose Booking.com when European refundable rates plus Genius discounts look strongest and you want a huge property catalogue. Choose Hotels.com when Rewards free-night maths is real for your volume — not for one-off weekends. Dual-quote every stay.
Choose Booking.com if you want wide global coverage, Genius discounts on refundable European stays, and a familiar review interface. Choose Agoda if Southeast Asia and East Asia cash prices repeatedly win after login. Choose Hotels.com if you already bank Rewards nights and the free-night value is documented in your own spreadsheet.
Choose none of them as religion. The winning tab changes by city and week. Use Hotellook-style metasearch to spot outliers, then finish on the merchant with terms you accept. Partner CTAs on this page point to Booking.com, Agoda and Hotellook because those are TravelShifu partners — Hotels.com remains an editorial comparator.
If two OTAs are within a few pounds, prefer clearer cancellation, a known payment flow, and customer-service access you can reach in your language. Price is not the only risk variable when a flight moves and you need to shift the stay.
- Agoda — often Asia cash leader in our snapshot; verify live
- Booking.com — often Europe Genius + catalogue depth
- Hotels.com — Rewards collectors, not default cash shoppers
- Always — hotel direct check + logged-out control search
What hotel booking workflow should you repeat every time?
Radar on metasearch, dual-quote two OTAs logged out and in, check the hotel site, then book the best price–terms pair. Screenshot confirmation, diary the cancellation deadline, and only then stop shopping. Repeating the same workflow beats hunting mythical secret rates.
Step one: set dates and guest count once; do not change filters mid-comparison or you will compare different products. Step two: metasearch radar for outlier merchants. Step three: Booking.com and Agoda checkouts including taxes. Step four: Hotels.com only if you care about Rewards maths. Step five: hotel official site. Step six: book and stop.
If you travel with points ambitions, separate cash optimisation from elite-night optimisation. Mixing both goals in one checkout is how people overpay cash to chase status that never posts. Chain rules for OTA eligibility deserve a calendar reminder before anniversary nights.
Families should price interconnecting rooms and cot fees explicitly; OTAs bury them. Solo travellers should prioritise location and cancellation over tiny rate gaps. Business travellers on expense policies should capture VAT invoices in the correct legal name at checkout.
Finally, connect the stay to the rest of the trip stack: flights triangulated elsewhere, eSIM installed, insurance documented. Hotel savings that strand you far from the station without a night bus plan are not savings. Internal links on this page exist to keep that stack coherent rather than to upsell random extras.
- One guest-count / one date set for the whole comparison
- Meta radar → two OTAs → hotel site → book
- Diary the free-cancellation deadline in local time
- Separate cash goals from elite-night goals
- Stop refreshing after you pay
Booking.com vs Agoda vs Hotels.com — common questions
Expect OTA prices to diverge by market and login state. Re-run same-hotel checks for your dates, prefer refundable bands when plans are soft, and remember affiliate links on this page are disclosed TravelShifu partners. No single brand wins every city.

- Does Genius beat Agoda VIP? — Only when the live Genius total wins; tiers are not comparable as abstract percentages.
- Do OTA bookings earn hotel elite nights? — Frequently no or only partially; check each chain’s rules.
- Should I trust logged-in prices only? — No. Keep a logged-out control search.
- Is Hotels.com worth it without Rewards focus? — Usually price it as a plain OTA; Rewards is the differentiator.
- Can metasearch replace OTAs? — It helps you find which merchant is cheapest; you still book somewhere.
- Are these affiliate links? — Yes for Booking.com, Agoda and Hotellook on this page — disclosed above.
- How often should I re-check? — Before paying, and again if dates move; hotel inventory is restless.
