When is the best time to visit Chicago?
Link to this answerFor most visitors the best time to visit Chicago is late May to June or September to early October. Average highs sit between about 21°C and 27°C, the architecture boats and lakefront are in full swing, and you avoid the hottest festival weeks. January and February suit museum-led trips if you dress for wind chill.
Chicago’s seasons are far more extreme than a British visitor is used to. At O’Hare, the official station, the average January low is −7.3°C (18.8°F) and the average July high is 29.2°C (84.5°F), a swing of more than 36°C across the year, according to the National Weather Service’s 1991–2020 normals. That gap, plus wind off Lake Michigan, matters more to your plans than any single festival.
This guide uses those NOAA normals for every temperature and rainfall figure, event dates from Choose Chicago’s 2026 festival guide and the organisers themselves, and opening rules from the venues. It was checked on 16 October 2026. Where an organiser had not yet published 2027 dates, we say so rather than guess.
Once you have a month, choose a base with where to stay in Chicago, pace the visit with the Chicago 3-day itinerary or the 7-day plan, and check entry rules for your passport in ESTA for UK travellers.
What is Chicago’s weather like month by month?
Link to this answerChicago runs from an average January low of −7°C to a July high of 29°C at O’Hare, based on NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals. May and August are the wettest months, almost all snow falls between December and March, and September keeps summer warmth with the fewest wet days of the year.
The table converts the NWS Chicago normals for O’Hare into Celsius and millimetres. Wet days are days with at least 0.25mm (0.01in) of precipitation, from the NCEI monthly normals file for the same station. These are 30-year averages: any single week can be far warmer, colder or wetter.
Freezing nights define the cold half of the year. The same NWS page counts an average of 28.1 nights at or below 0°C (32°F) in January, 25.4 in December and 121.3 across a whole year. At the other end, highs of 32°C (90°F) or more average 6.5 days in July, 4.1 in June and 3.7 in August, and 16.7 days a year.
Snowfall averages 97.5cm (38.4in) a year at O’Hare, with January (28.7cm) and February (27.2cm) the snowiest months and December (19.3cm) close behind. Spring arrives late: March still averages 19.9 freezing nights, which is why April and May, not March, are when lakefront walking starts to feel pleasant.

How harsh is a Chicago winter for visitors?
Link to this answerHarsh enough to plan around. O’Hare averages 28 freezing nights in January and almost a metre of snow a year, and wind makes it feel colder still. Winter works for museum-led city breaks if you dress for wind chill, cluster sights near L stations and keep an indoor option for every outdoor plan.
Wind chill is the number to watch in the forecast, not the air temperature. The National Weather Service’s wind chill chart gives a simple example: at −18°C (0°F) with a 24km/h (15mph) wind, the wind chill is −28°C (−19°F), and exposed skin can freeze in 30 minutes. Hats that cover ears, a scarf for the face and proper gloves turn a miserable walk across a river bridge into a manageable one.
Lake-effect snow is the other Chicago-specific risk. The NWS explains that it forms when cold air, often from Canada, crosses open Great Lakes water in late autumn and winter, building narrow bands that can drop 5–8cm (2–3in) of snow an hour while the sun shines a mile or two away. The UK government’s USA travel advice notes that snowstorms can disrupt critical infrastructure and suggests contacting your airline before you travel.
The upside is that Chicago’s best indoor sights stay open. The Field Museum opens daily from 9am to 5pm except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, and the glasshouses at Garfield Park Conservatory open Wednesday to Sunday with timed entry. For covered walking routes and museum pairings, use Chicago in the rain.
Is summer the best time to visit Chicago?
Link to this answerSummer is Chicago at its most sociable: lifeguarded lake beaches, outdoor music in Millennium Park and long evenings on the river. It is also the hottest and busiest stretch, with about six days above 32°C in an average July and big festivals competing with you for central hotel rooms. Book early if you go.
The beach season is short and fixed. The Chicago Park District runs lifeguarded swimming from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, with lifeguards on duty from 11am to 7pm, and swimming along the lakefront is prohibited outside those hours and that season. In 2027, Memorial Day falls on 31 May and Labor Day on 6 September, according to the US Office of Personnel Management.
Festival season stacks up from June. In 2026, Choose Chicago listed the Blues Festival on 4–7 June, the Pride Parade on 28 June, Taste of Chicago on 8–12 July, the Air and Water Show on 15–16 August and the Jazz Festival on 3–6 September. Lollapalooza took over Grant Park from 30 July to 2 August 2026; its 2027 dates were not on the festival site when we checked.
Heat is real but brief. NWS normals put the average number of 32°C-plus days at 6.5 in July, so schedule the architecture river cruise and lakefront walks for mornings or evenings, and keep the afternoon for air-conditioned galleries. The Art Institute is closed on Tuesdays, so swap days if a heatwave lands then (Chicago Gallery News).
Why are late spring and early autumn the sweet spots?
Link to this answerBecause the weather and the city’s seasonal sights line up. June averages a high near 27°C and September 24°C, with September having the fewest wet days of the year. The architecture river cruise runs from March to November, so both windows give you the boat, the parks and outdoor dining without midsummer heat.
Late May and June bring long evenings and the first beach weeks, but May is also the wettest month at O’Hare, with 114mm over about 12.5 wet days (NWS, NCEI). Pack a light waterproof and keep one museum in reserve. June’s headline events, the Blues Festival and Pride, add atmosphere rather than shutting the city down.
September to mid-October is the steadier choice. September averages 8.5 wet days and highs of 24.2°C, and October still averages 17.1°C. The Jazz Festival (3–6 September in 2026) and Chicago Gourmet (24–27 September in 2026) are the main draws (Choose Chicago). The Chicago Marathon falls on 10 October 2027, so check that weekend before you book a central hotel.
The Chicago Architecture Center’s cruise FAQ says the 90-minute river cruise departs several times a day from March to November and that tours frequently sell out, especially at weekends, on holidays and for twilight departures. The operator lists its 2026 season as 15 March to 22 November (First Lady), so a mid-November trip is the last chance this year.
Which Chicago events in late 2026 and 2027 affect crowds and prices?
Link to this answerStill to come in 2026 are the Christkindlmarket from 20 November, the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival on 21 November and a large radiology congress at McCormick Place from 29 November. For 2027 the marathon is fixed for 10 October; most summer festivals had not announced 2027 dates when we checked on 16 October.
Big events concentrate demand in specific districts rather than across the whole city. Grant Park and Millennium Park festivals pull visitors into the Loop and South Loop, the Lights Festival fills North Michigan Avenue, and McCormick Place conventions lean on South Loop hotels. If your dates are flexible, search the week before and after an event as well as the event week itself.
The Christkindlmarket marks its 30th season in 2026. All three markets open on Friday 20 November; Daley Plaza in the Loop and the Aurora market close on 24 December, while the Wrigleyville market at Gallagher Way runs to 31 December, according to NBC Chicago. The Lights Festival parade steps off at 5:30pm on Saturday 21 November, with fireworks over the river at 7:30pm.
The green river is the other big spring weekend: in 2026 the dyeing took place on Saturday 14 March from about 10am, ahead of the 12:15pm parade on Columbus Drive (NBC Chicago). The 2027 date had not been announced. For the radiology congress, RSNA 2026 runs from 29 November to 3 December at McCormick Place (ITN).
| Event | Dates | Where | Effect on your trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christkindlmarket | 20 Nov–24 Dec 2026 (Wrigleyville to 31 Dec) | Daley Plaza; Gallagher Way | Busy Loop evenings and weekends |
| Magnificent Mile Lights Festival | Sat 21 Nov 2026 | North Michigan Avenue | Crowds and closures on the Mag Mile that evening |
| ZooLights | 20 Nov 2026–3 Jan 2027 | Lincoln Park Zoo | Busy zoo evenings in December |
| RSNA congress | 29 Nov–3 Dec 2026 | McCormick Place | South Loop hotels in demand |
| St Patrick’s river dyeing and parade | 14 Mar in 2026; 2027 date not yet announced | Chicago River and Columbus Drive | Packed riverbanks on parade Saturday |
| Blues Festival | 4–7 Jun in 2026 | Millennium Park | Loop crowds over four days |
| Lollapalooza | 30 Jul–2 Aug in 2026 | Grant Park | Peak demand for Loop and South Loop rooms |
| Air and Water Show | 15–16 Aug in 2026 | North Avenue Beach | Busy lakefront and beaches |
| Chicago Marathon | 11 Oct 2026; 10 Oct 2027 | Central Chicago | Road closures and busy central hotels |
How do US holidays and conventions change a Chicago trip?
Link to this answerThanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day matter most because some big sights close. Thanksgiving falls on 26 November 2026. In 2027, the long weekends are Memorial Day on 31 May, Independence Day observed on 5 July and Labor Day on 6 September. Large McCormick Place shows add pressure on South Loop rooms.
The Office of Personnel Management’s holiday list gives the federal dates: Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday, New Year’s Day 2027 is a Friday, and Presidents’ Day falls on 15 February 2027. Independence Day 2027 lands on a Sunday, so the observed holiday is Monday 5 July, which turns it into a three-day weekend for many Americans.
Check closures before you fix a holiday itinerary. The Field Museum shuts on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day (Field Museum), and the Daley Plaza Christkindlmarket ends on Christmas Eve. Lincoln Park Zoo is the exception: it opens every day of the year, with free admission (Lincoln Park Zoo).
Conventions are the hidden variable. McCormick Place hosted the Chicago Auto Show from 7 to 16 February 2026 (Choose Chicago), and RSNA follows on 29 November 2026. Before paying for a non-refundable room, look at the McCormick Place events calendar for your dates, particularly if you want to stay in the South Loop.
Which month suits which kind of Chicago trip?
Link to this answerPick by priority. June or September suits first-timers who want everything open. July and August suit festival-goers and beach days if heat is fine. Late November and December suit markets and lights. January to March suits museum-heavy breaks for travellers who can handle cold, and April is a gamble between spring and winter.
Architecture lovers should aim for the cruise season, March to November, ideally in September, when the weather is most settled. Photographers who want snow on the skyline should look at January and February, the snowiest months, and bring gloves that let them work a camera in wind chill.
Families are best served from June to August, when lifeguarded beaches open and the Chicago with kids guide works at full stretch. Runners targeting the marathon on 10 October 2027 can apply now through the official marathon site. Food-focused travellers might like Chicago Restaurant Week, which ran from 23 January to 8 February in 2026 (Choose Chicago).
- First visit, everything open: June or September
- Beaches and festivals: July and August (book early)
- Christmas markets and lights: 20 November to 24 December
- Museums and lower outdoor ambition: January to March
- Architecture cruise: 15 March to 22 November in 2026
- Marathon: 10 October 2027
How far ahead should you book a Chicago trip?
Link to this answerFix flights and a cancellable hotel as soon as your month is chosen, and earlier if your dates overlap Lollapalooza, the marathon or a McCormick Place convention. Book the architecture cruise once dates are firm because departures sell out. Leave museums and restaurants until the week before, when you can see the forecast.
Hotel taxes vary by location in Chicago, so compare full totals rather than nightly headlines. Since 1 May 2026, hotels with 100 or more rooms in 16 central zip codes may pass on a 1.5% tourism district charge on top of the city’s 4.5% hotel tax (City of Chicago Department of Finance). Our where to stay in Chicago guide maps which neighbourhoods that covers.
For flights, Chicago has two airports with direct rail links: the Blue Line from O’Hare runs 24 hours and takes 40–45 minutes to downtown, and the Orange Line from Midway takes 20–25 minutes (CTA). Compare both airports for your dates and use cheap flights from Chicago for the method in reverse.
Keep stays refundable until flights are ticketed, then lock them in. If a festival or convention appears on your dates after you book, a free-cancellation room gives you the option to move a week either side rather than absorb the event premium.

So when should you go to Chicago?
Link to this answerGo in June or September if you can choose freely: warm, mostly dry, cruises running and parks at their best. Choose late November to Christmas for markets and lights, and July or August only if festivals or beaches are the point. Winter suits seasoned city-breakers who want museums and do not mind serious cold.
The deciding factor for most British visitors is wind rather than temperature. A 17°C October afternoon by the river can feel colder than the number suggests, and in January the wind chill, not the air temperature, decides how long you can stay outside. Pack for the wind chill forecast and Chicago is rewarding in any month.
Next steps: pick your neighbourhood in where to stay in Chicago, see what earns your time in things to do in Chicago, and plan the airport leg with O’Hare to Chicago by train or transfer. The Chicago destination hub collects everything in one place.
