What are the best things to do in Bandung?
Link to this answerFor a first visit, give central Bandung one day (Braga, Asia Afrika, Gedung Sate and Museum Geologi), the north one day for Tangkuban Perahu and a Lembang park, and the south a third day for Kawah Putih. Lembang and Ciwidey lie in opposite directions, so never squeeze both into one day.
This guide compares 20 attractions in three areas, with a verdict for each and fees only where an operator, official page or recent Indonesian news report states them (checked October 2026). Indonesia’s tourism ministry places Tangkuban Perahu about 30 km north of Bandung towards Lembang, and Kawah Putih about 44–50 km south via Soreang and Ciwidey. That geography, not the length of anyone’s top-ten list, should shape your days.
Treat the verdicts as editorial judgement from desk research, not a personal visit report. We have not inspected every park, and prices at private attractions change often. If you are still choosing between the two hill areas, read Lembang vs Ciwidey; for a car-free pace, use our three-day itinerary; for food between sights, see where to eat in Bandung; and for the wider picture, our Bandung destination guide.
| Time you have | What to prioritise | What to leave out |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day | Braga, Asia Afrika and Museum KAA, Gedung Sate, Museum Geologi | Any hill day trip |
| 2 days | Add Tangkuban Perahu plus one Lembang park | Ciwidey, which is too far to bolt on |
| 3 days | Add Kawah Putih with Situ Patenggang or Ranca Upas | A second Lembang theme park |
| 4 days or more | Add Tahura Djuanda, Tebing Keraton or Saung Angklung Udjo | Weekend hill trips, if you can go midweek |
Which central Bandung attractions are worth your time?
Link to this answerGo for Jalan Braga, the Asia Afrika area with Museum Konperensi Asia Afrika, Gedung Sate’s museum and Museum Geologi; together they make a strong heritage day. Add Saung Angklung Udjo for an afternoon show and Tahura Djuanda for forest walks. Factory outlets and the Dago car-free morning are optional extras, not reasons to visit.
Jalan Braga has a city tourism designation as a heritage and cultural street. On Sundays the city closes it to traffic all day for Braga Beken, from 00:00 to 23:59 (Detik, 9 October 2026). Museum Konperensi Asia Afrika, in Gedung Merdeka, is free with online registration and opens Wednesday to Saturday, 09:00–15:00, with a 12:00–13:00 break and Friday hours that shift around Friday prayers (Metro TV, July 2026). Groups that reserve can ask for a guide in Indonesian, English or Mandarin.
Bandung’s heritage streets are also the setting of Dilan 1990 (2018) and its sequel, the hit Indonesian teen films set in the city in 1990–91. Our sister site CelluloidScore has an Indonesian-language Dilan 1990 review and guide for watching before a visit.
Gedung Sate’s main building is a working government office, but its basement museum is open; the tourism ministry lists Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–16:00, and the West Java government gave admission as Rp5,000 in August 2026, while the courtyard was being opened up to join Gasibu field. Museum Geologi charges Rp5,000 for the general public, Rp3,000 for students and Rp25,000 for foreign visitors under the tariff in force since 26 April 2025. It opens Monday to Thursday 09:00–15:00 and weekends 09:00–14:00, and closes on Fridays and public holidays.
Saung Angklung Udjo runs its bamboo-music show daily from 15:30, with extra weekend sessions; the tourism ministry lists Rp120,000 for international adults. Tahura Djuanda, a forest park of about 528 hectares, costs Rp57,000 for foreign visitors and Rp17,000 for Indonesians (Tribun Travel, 8 October 2026) and includes the Goa Belanda and Gua Jepang caves and Curug Omas waterfall. The Dago car-free day on Jalan Ir. H. Juanda now runs on the first and third Sundays of the month, 06:00–10:00. For outlets, the tourism ministry points to Jalan RE Martadinata (Jalan Riau), Jalan Ir H Juanda and Cihampelas.

What is worth seeing in Lembang and north Bandung?
Link to this answerTangkuban Perahu is the north’s one unmissable sight, provided the volcano is at its normal alert level. Pair it with one Lembang park: Orchid Forest Cikole for forest scenery, or Floating Market or Farm House for families. Tebing Keraton suits an early start, and Bosscha Observatory only works if its public visits are running.
The tourism ministry’s Lembang overview puts Lembang about 30 minutes from central Bandung on a clear road and lists Farmhouse, Floating Market, The Lodge Maribaya, Bosscha, Cikole Orchid Forest and Keraton Cliff among its draws. In practice, traffic on Jalan Setiabudi decides the journey time (see the traffic section below). For Tangkuban Perahu, the most recent fee report we found, citing the operator’s Instagram, lists Rp200,000 for foreign visitors on weekdays and Rp300,000 at weekends and holidays, against Rp30,000–40,000 for Indonesians (Kabar Priangan, November 2025). Our Tangkuban Perahu guide covers volcano status, craters and touts.
The ministry describes Cikole Orchid Forest as more than 20,000 orchids in pine forest about 5 km from Lembang’s town square, with entry generally Rp40,000–100,000 depending on visitor category and a lit hanging bridge after dark. Its Padalarang station guide lists Floating Market at Rp35,000 and Dusun Bambu at Rp20,000 on weekdays and Rp40,000 at weekends, with a free Dusun Bambu shuttle from Padalarang Whoosh station at set times. Treat those as listings to confirm, because private parks reprice often. We found no reliable current gate price for Farm House or The Lodge Maribaya, so check at the gate.
Tebing Keraton is a rocky outcrop inside Tahura Djuanda at about 1,200 m, known for misty sunrise views; Detik reported in 2023 that the Tahura ticket covers it and posted hours were 08:00–16:00, so confirm early access before planning a dawn visit. Bosscha Observatory, run by ITB, describes Saturday guided day visits at Rp50,000, booked online, but in June 2026 Detik reported that general public visits were still being prepared and only school groups were admitted.
| Attraction | What it is | Best for | Best time | Fee and hours (checked Oct 2026) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tangkuban Perahu | Active volcano with a drive-up crater rim | Most visitors without breathing problems | Weekday, from the 08:00 opening | Rp200,000–300,000 foreign; Rp30,000–40,000 local; 08:00–17:00 | Go (check the alert level) |
| Orchid Forest Cikole | Orchid gardens, pine forest and a hanging bridge | Couples, photographers | Late afternoon into dusk for the lights | Rp40,000–100,000 by visitor category (ministry) | Go |
| Floating Market Lembang | Lake park with food sold from boats | Families, snackers | Weekday late morning | Rp35,000 (ministry listing) | Go with children; skip otherwise |
| Farm House Lembang | Dutch-village theme park with a Hobbit house | Families with young children | Weekday opening time | Check at the gate; packages vary | Only with children |
| Dusun Bambu | Eco-tourism park with boats, cycling and go-karts | Families, Whoosh arrivals | Weekday daytime | Rp20,000–40,000 (ministry listing) | Go if arriving via Padalarang |
| The Lodge Maribaya | Nature-adventure park in the Maribaya area | Photo-focused visitors | Weekday morning | Check at the gate | Only if photos are the point |
| Tebing Keraton | Cliff viewpoint over forest inside Tahura Djuanda | Early risers, walkers | Early morning | Tahura ticket (Rp57,000 foreign) | Go if you can start early |
| Bosscha Observatory | ITB’s astronomical observatory in Lembang | Science fans | Saturday sessions, when running | Rp50,000; book online | Only if public visits are open |
What is worth seeing south of Bandung around Ciwidey?
Link to this answerKawah Putih is the reason to go south: a pale green-white crater lake on Mount Patuha. Combine it with Situ Patenggang lake, the Ranca Upas deer park or the Rancabali tea slopes on the same road. Allow a full day, because the drive alone takes about two hours each way from central Bandung.
PRFM News (3 May 2026) put Kawah Putih about 50 km from central Bandung, roughly two hours via Soreang and Ciwidey, open daily 07:30–16:30, with tickets of Rp28,000–31,000 for Indonesians and Rp81,000–90,000 for foreign visitors. The same report lists Situ Patenggang, a lake at about 1,600 m, as open 09:00–17:00 with tickets of Rp25,000–100,000 depending on package, and Ranca Upas, at about 1,700 m, at Rp31,000–35,000 for a day visit, 07:00–17:30.
Ranca Upas is a Perhutani site known for deer you can feed, camping and a naturally heated pool. The tea estates need no ticket: PRFM notes that the plantation roads around Rancabali and the Cibuni estate are generally free, with at most a parking charge, and that the blue-and-white workers’ houses of Kampung Rumah Biru are a popular photo stop. Our Kawah Putih guide covers the crater’s shuttle, sulphur safety and timing in detail.
| Attraction | What it is | Best for | Best time | Fee and hours (PRFM, May 2026) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kawah Putih | Crater lake on Mount Patuha | Anyone able to walk short paths and without breathing problems | The 07:30 opening | Rp81,000–90,000 foreign; Rp28,000–31,000 local; 07:30–16:30 | Go |
| Situ Patenggang | Highland lake with boat rides to Batu Cinta and Pulau Asmara | Couples, families | Late morning, after Kawah Putih | Rp25,000–100,000 by package; 09:00–17:00 | Go as a combination |
| Ranca Upas | Perhutani campground with deer feeding and a hot pool | Families, campers | Midday | Rp31,000–35,000 day visit; 07:00–17:30 | Go with children |
| Rancabali tea estates | Tea slopes and workers’ villages along the Ciwidey–Rancabali road | Photographers | Any clear hour | Generally free; parking may apply | Go as a roadside stop |
How much do Bandung attractions cost for foreign visitors?
Link to this answerExpect to pay several times the Indonesian price at the big nature sites. Tangkuban Perahu was reported at Rp200,000 on weekdays and Rp300,000 at weekends for foreigners, Kawah Putih at Rp81,000–90,000 and Tahura Djuanda at Rp57,000. City museums stay cheap: Museum Geologi charges foreigners Rp25,000 and Museum KAA is free.
Each operator sets its own dual pricing, so the gap varies widely. The figures below come from the most recent operator, government or Indonesian news source we could find, with its date; none is a live quote. Weekend and public-holiday rates apply at Tangkuban Perahu, and children aged five and over need a ticket there (Kabar Priangan).
Carry cash for gates, parking and shuttles. Museum Geologi accepts cash or QRIS (Metro TV), but do not assume card payment at hill-area gates. If a tour quote looks low, ask whether it includes foreign-visitor tickets; at Tangkuban Perahu the gap between the two rates is large enough to change which tour is better value. Record each quote in My Trip so you compare like with like.
| Attraction | Indonesian visitor | Foreign visitor | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tangkuban Perahu | Rp30,000 weekday / Rp40,000 weekend | Rp200,000 weekday / Rp300,000 weekend | Kabar Priangan, Nov 2025, citing the operator |
| Kawah Putih | Rp28,000–31,000 | Rp81,000–90,000 | PRFM News, May 2026 |
| Tahura Djuanda | Rp17,000 | Rp57,000 | Tribun Travel, Oct 2026, citing the operator |
| Museum Geologi | Rp5,000 (students Rp3,000) | Rp25,000 | Metro TV, Dec 2025 |
| Saung Angklung Udjo show | Rp85,000 adult | Rp120,000 adult | Tourism ministry listing |
| Gedung Sate Museum | Rp5,000 | No separate rate published | West Java government, Aug 2026 |
| Museum Konperensi Asia Afrika | Free | Free | Metro TV, Jul 2026 |
How do you plan Bandung days by area to beat traffic?
Link to this answerGive each day one direction: the city, the north (Lembang and Tangkuban Perahu) or the south (Ciwidey and Kawah Putih). Go to the hills on weekdays, leave early and start back before mid-afternoon. At weekends and holidays police run one-way schemes on Lembang roads, and Soreang–Ciwidey queues have turned visitors back.
Weekend and holiday congestion is documented, not folklore. On 22 March 2026, during the Lebaran holiday, Kompas reported Jalan Setiabudhi jammed by 15:00, with most traffic heading up from Bandung and police applying a one-way scheme at Simpang Beatrix about six times. On 31 May 2026, Antara reported congestion from midday on Jalan Raya Lembang, on Jalan Raya Tangkuban Parahu and at the Tangkuban Perahu gate, with about 80 officers deployed.
The south is no easier at peak times. During Lebaran 2026, RRI reported that heavy traffic between Soreang and Ciwidey made some visitors turn round. On the Iduladha holiday Sunday, 31 May 2026, Detik reported 6,555 visitors at Kawah Putih and queues reaching the provincial road; the manager said normal days see fewer than 1,000. The tourism ministry also warns that the Jakarta–Bandung drive, normally about two hours, can take four to six hours at weekends and holidays.
Use the table to slot each area into the right part of the day, and keep city sights for the hours when the hill roads fill. If your only free days are a weekend, do the city then and move the hill day to a weekday, even if that means an extra night.
- Never pair Lembang and Ciwidey in one day; they sit on opposite sides of the city.
- At weekends, aim to be at the first gate near opening time and heading back by early afternoon.
- Avoid Indonesian long weekends and school holidays for hill days where you can.
- Ask your driver about that day’s one-way timings on the Lembang roads.
| Time of day | City | North: Lembang and Tangkuban Perahu | South: Ciwidey and Kawah Putih |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early morning | Dago car-free day (first and third Sundays) | Drive up before traffic builds | Set off for the 07:30 Kawah Putih opening |
| Late morning | Museums and Braga | Crater rim, then one park | Kawah Putih, then Situ Patenggang |
| Midday to afternoon | Gedung Sate, Asia Afrika, outlets | Weekend congestion builds from midday | Ranca Upas or the tea estates, then head back |
| Late afternoon | Saung Angklung Udjo at 15:30 | Orchid Forest lights, or head down | Expect slow Soreang–Ciwidey traffic at peaks |
Should you book a day tour from Bandung or hire a driver?
Link to this answerBook a tour or a private driver for Kawah Putih and for any day combining Tangkuban Perahu with Lembang parks. Public transport is slow, and you should not rely on finding a ride back from a hill car park. Compare quotes on the same route, inclusions and return time, not the headline price.
Public transport exists but is slow for visitors: the tourism ministry describes a bus to Ciwidey and then an angkot for Kawah Putih, and a Subang-bound minibus via Lembang for Tangkuban Perahu. A tour or driver also solves the return, which matters more than the outward trip.
When comparing, check whether the price includes foreign-visitor tickets, the Kawah Putih shuttle and, if the vehicle will drive up to the crater car park, the Rp162,000–179,000 per-vehicle charge PRFM News reported. Ask for the pickup area, the time you will be back and what happens if a crater closes for weather or gas. Our Lembang vs Ciwidey guide has a fuller tour-versus-driver checklist.
| Option | Suits | Check before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Shared or group tour | Solo travellers, couples | Pickup area, number of stops, foreign tickets included |
| Private tour with guide | Families, first-timers | Guide language, admissions, return time |
| Private car and driver | Groups wanting flexibility | Hours included, fuel, tolls, parking, overtime |
| Public bus and angkot | Budget travellers with time | Last departures back; allow a very long day |

What are the best things to do in Bandung with kids?
Link to this answerMuseum Geologi, Saung Angklung Udjo and a Lembang park such as Floating Market, Farm House or Dusun Bambu work best for children. Ranca Upas adds deer feeding on a Ciwidey day. Keep crater visits short, stay on marked paths and skip them altogether for children with asthma or other breathing problems.
Museum Geologi’s best-known exhibit is a full-size T-rex skeleton replica, donated by Japan’s JICA in 2000. At Saung Angklung Udjo, the show includes a hands-on angklung lesson and ends with the audience dancing with the young performers. In the north, the tourism ministry flags Farmhouse Lembang as family-friendly, and Dusun Bambu offers cycling, go-karting and boat rides.
South of the city, Ranca Upas lets visitors feed deer, and Tahura Djuanda has a deer area close to the city. At volcanic sites, the geology agency advises visitors not to go down into crater floors and to watch for volcanic gas (Tempo, July 2026); with small children, view from the rim and keep the visit brief. Children aged five and over need their own Tangkuban Perahu ticket.
- Hot or wet afternoon: Museum Geologi (closed Fridays) or the 15:30 angklung show.
- Animals: the deer at Ranca Upas or Tahura Djuanda.
- Active children: Dusun Bambu’s bikes and boats, or a short Tahura forest walk.
- Toddlers: favour flat Lembang parks over crater paths and long drives.
What can you do in Bandung on a rainy day?
Link to this answerSwitch to the city: Museum Geologi, Gedung Sate’s museum, Museum Konperensi Asia Afrika, the 15:30 angklung show and the factory outlets all work in rain. Check opening days, because they differ. Postpone crater trips when heavy cloud is forecast, since views vanish and volcanic gas is more of a risk in overcast weather.
The geology agency told visitors to Tangkuban Perahu in July 2026 to be especially wary of volcanic gas in the rainy season or overcast weather, and the tourism ministry notes that cloud often rolls in around Kawah Putih’s cliffs. Check the BMKG forecast the evening before and keep the hill day flexible.
The city museums close on different days, which makes them easy to rotate. Museum Geologi closes on Fridays and public holidays, Museum KAA opens only Wednesday to Saturday, and Gedung Sate’s museum is listed as Tuesday to Sunday; check the last two before a public holiday. For a longer wet spell, the outlets along Jalan RE Martadinata and Jalan Ir H Juanda fill an afternoon, and a long Sundanese lunch is a legitimate plan: see where to eat in Bandung.
| Day | Museum Geologi | Gedung Sate Museum (ministry listing) | Museum KAA |

Where should you stay to see Bandung’s attractions?
Link to this answerStay central, around Braga or north-central Bandung, if you want city sights plus one day trip in each direction. Choose Lembang only if most of your days are in the northern hills, and accept a long drive to Ciwidey. Basing yourself in Ciwidey only makes sense if camping or a Kawah Putih sunrise is the point.
A central base keeps both hill areas within a day trip and puts the museums a short ride away. Compare areas in our where to stay in Bandung guide and read hotel notes at Bandung hotels. For arrival, our Jakarta–Bandung Whoosh guide and Jakarta airport to Bandung guide cover the rail and road handoffs.
Flying in from elsewhere in Indonesia is now an option again: commercial jets returned to Bandung’s city airport, Husein Sastranegara, on 14 August 2026 with a Garuda flight from Denpasar, after almost three years in which jet services used Kertajati instead. Check which airport your ticket names. Whichever site you book through, compare the same dates, room type and cancellation terms, and save quotes in My Trip.
