Tangkuban Perahu guide: foreign and local entrance fees, checking the volcano’s alert level on MAGMA, the craters, Lembang traffic, touts and Ciater.

Key takeaways

How to visit Tangkuban Perahu from Bandung

A half-day plan for the crater, with optional Lembang or Ciater stops, built around the alert level and weekday traffic.

  1. On the morning of your visit, check the alert level on MAGMA Indonesia (magma.esdm.go.id); go only at Level I (Normal) and if the park is open.
  2. Check the BMKG forecast and postpone if heavy rain or low cloud is expected.
  3. Leave central Bandung by about 06:30 on a weekday, earlier at weekends, to reach the gate near the 08:00 opening.
  4. Pay at the official gate with cash: the latest report lists Rp200,000 on weekdays or Rp300,000 at weekends for foreign visitors, plus vehicle entry.
  5. View Kawah Ratu from the rim, stay behind barriers, do not descend into crater floors and move away if the steam thickens or the gas smell sharpens.
  6. Walk to Kawah Domas only in dry weather with good shoes, and agree any guide price before you start.
  7. Continue to Ciater hot springs or one Lembang stop, and begin the drive back to Bandung by early afternoon at weekends.

Is Tangkuban Perahu worth visiting?

Link to this answer

Yes, as long as the volcano is at Level I (Normal) and you go on a weekday morning. You can drive almost to the rim of Kawah Ratu, which few active volcanoes allow, and it pairs easily with Lembang or Ciater. The foreign-visitor ticket is steep, though, and weekend traffic can swallow the day.

The tourism ministry describes Tangkuban Perahu as an active volcano shaped like an overturned boat, about 30 km north of Bandung, and the only crater in Indonesia you can drive up to the rim of. The most recent fee report we found lists Rp200,000 for foreign visitors on weekdays and Rp300,000 at weekends and holidays (Kabar Priangan, November 2025). That price is the main reason some visitors choose Kawah Putih instead.

Our verdict: go if you want an easy look into an active crater and have a weekday; choose Kawah Putih if you want the more photogenic landscape and can spare a full day. Families with young children, and anyone sensitive to sulphur, should keep the stop short. Compare the two areas in Lembang vs Ciwidey and see every option in things to do in Bandung.

What are Kawah Ratu, Kawah Upas and Kawah Domas?

Link to this answer

Kawah Ratu is the main summit crater, seen from the rim beside the car park, with white steam rising from its floor. Kawah Upas is its neighbour on the summit. Kawah Domas lies lower down, with steaming vents and hot springs, and is reached on foot. All are active, and visitors should not descend into crater floors.

Tangkuban Perahu has nine active craters, and the two main summit craters are Kawah Ratu and Kawah Upas, the Geological Agency told Tempo in December 2025; its eruptions are usually phreatic, or steam-driven, blasts from those two. A Tempo visitor explainer describes Kawah Ratu as grey-green with sulphur steam, Kawah Upas as blue-green, and Kawah Domas as yellow-green with thicker steam and hot springs.

The tourism ministry mentions a steeper trail of about an hour via Kawah Domas, starting behind the information centre. In July 2026 the agency asked visitors around Kawah Ratu and Kawah Upas not to go down to the crater floor and to watch for hazardous gas (Tempo). Treat any walk to Kawah Domas as optional, and do it only in dry weather with proper shoes.

What is Tangkuban Perahu’s volcano status and alert level today?

Link to this answer

At the latest Geological Agency update we found, issued on 10 July 2026, Tangkuban Perahu was at Level I (Normal), the lowest of Indonesia’s four alert levels. That can change quickly. Check the current level on MAGMA Indonesia (magma.esdm.go.id) on the morning you go, and do not visit above Level I unless authorities confirm it is open.

On 10 July 2026 the acting head of the Geological Agency said activity was still at Level I (Normal) as of 9 July, after a magnitude 2.7 tectonic earthquake nearby triggered no rise in volcanic activity. She added that phreatic eruptions here can happen suddenly and are hard to predict. In late December 2025 the agency had recorded a spike in low-frequency earthquakes and warned that a phreatic eruption could occur without clear warning signs, while keeping the status at Normal.

The authoritative source is MAGMA Indonesia, run by PVMBG, the national volcanology centre; the UK Foreign Office also points travellers to it for daily status (in Indonesian). The FCDO notes that volcanoes can erupt without warning and that exclusion zones can change at short notice. Look up Tangkuban Parahu, the Indonesian spelling, on the morning of your visit; if MAGMA will not load, check recent Antara, Detik or Tempo reports for any change.

When did Tangkuban Perahu last erupt or close?

Link to this answer

The last eruption was a phreatic blast from Kawah Ratu on 26 July 2019, after which the nature park closed and the alert level rose to Level II in August 2019. Since then the volcano has had bouts of seismic unrest, in mid-2025 and December 2025, but stayed at Level I. We found no closure reported in 2026.

On 26 July 2019 Kawah Ratu erupted at about 15:48 local time; the park closed and PVMBG recommended staying 500 m from the crater rim, Detik reported the next day. A PVMBG observer noted then that closing the park was not the agency’s decision; it issues the distance recommendation. The agency raised the volcano to Level II (Waspada) from 2 August 2019 and later lowered it back to Normal.

Unrest since then has not changed the status. The Geological Agency recorded up to 270 low-frequency earthquakes on 3 June 2025 and bubbling mud at Kawah Ratu in early June 2025, then another rise from 24 December 2025, keeping Level I throughout (Tempo). Viral videos claiming new eruptions recur; in December 2023 PVMBG told Antara that one such clip actually showed the 2019 eruption. Rely on MAGMA, not social media.

How much is the Tangkuban Perahu entrance fee?

Link to this answer

Foreign visitors pay Rp200,000 on weekdays and Rp300,000 at weekends and holidays, according to the latest report we found (November 2025, citing the operator). Indonesians pay Rp30,000 and Rp40,000. A car adds Rp25,000–35,000. The park opens 08:00–17:00 daily, and tickets are sold at the gate to everyone aged five and over.

These figures come from Kabar Priangan, a Pikiran Rakyat network title, on 1 November 2025, citing the park’s Instagram account. The foreign-visitor rate matches Detik’s April 2024 report, which gave Rp20,000–30,000 for Indonesians, so the domestic price has risen while the foreign price has not. We could not load the operator’s own website to confirm, so check at the gate.

Vehicle entry is charged per vehicle on top of each person’s ticket, plus a small parking fee. The ontang-anting shuttle costs Rp10,000 per person return; Detik describes it running from Jayagiri terminal, where buses park, to the main crater area. No advance booking is needed, because tickets are sold on arrival, so bring cash.

How do you get to Tangkuban Perahu from Bandung?

Link to this answer

Drive north through Lembang: it is about 30 km and roughly 90 minutes from central Bandung on a weekday, longer at weekends. A private driver or tour is simplest and lets you add Lembang or Ciater. Subang-bound minibuses pass the gate, but the summit is a long walk or minibus ride beyond it.

The tourism ministry gives about 30 km and around 90 minutes by car from Bandung on weekdays, the same journey time Detik reported. The route runs up Jalan Setiabudi to Lembang and on along Jalan Raya Tangkuban Parahu. On busy days police run one-way schemes on these roads; on 31 May 2026 Antara reported jams on Jalan Raya Tangkuban Parahu and at the park gate from midday.

Without a car, the ministry describes Subang-bound minibuses via Lembang from the minibus terminal near Bandung station; from the main-road gate it is about 4.5 km to the top, by minibus or on foot. That works for a fit, flexible traveller but is awkward with children. Arrange the return ride before you leave Bandung rather than relying on an app pickup at the summit.

For most visitors, a half-day driver, or a full day if you add Ciater or a Lembang park, is the practical option. Start early at weekends, and see our traffic planning advice for timing and our where to stay in Bandung guide for a base with an easy northbound start.

Will vendors or touts pressure you at Tangkuban Perahu?

Link to this answer

Expect souvenir stalls at the summit and, according to traveller accounts, offers of guiding near Kawah Domas. A polite no usually ends it. We found no recent official or news report on tout behaviour, so treat online horror stories as anecdotes. Pay only at official ticket points, and agree any guide price before you start walking.

Souvenir shopping is part of the standard visit; Tempo’s visitor explainer lists it alongside crater viewing (Tempo). Traveller reviews also describe persistent sellers and unofficial guiding offers near Kawah Domas, but we found no recent official or news report on tout behaviour, so we cannot say how common it is today.

The province has been tidying the approaches. In August 2025 West Java removed 978 roadside stalls along the Cagak–Ciater–Tangkuban Parahu route in Subang on Governor Dedi Mulyadi’s instruction, saying they had been built illegally along a provincial road. Detik reported that most had sold pineapple, coffee or simple food.

A calm approach works: a smile and tidak, terima kasih (no, thank you), then keep walking. Buy tickets only at the official gate and keep yours to show if asked. If someone says a guide is compulsory for Kawah Domas, check at the information centre before paying, and agree any price, including for photographs, before the service starts.

What can you combine with Tangkuban Perahu?

Do the crater first, at the 08:00 opening, then choose one: Ciater’s hot springs about 30 minutes further on, or a Lembang stop on the way back such as Orchid Forest Cikole, Floating Market or Farm House. Doing both makes a long day; at weekends, pick one and head down early.

Detik puts Ciater Hot Springs about 30 minutes from the park, and the tourism ministry suggests Ciater for a soak after the crater. Ciater lies beyond the volcano in Subang Regency, so a hot-spring stop means continuing away from Bandung before turning back.

On the Lembang side, the ministry lists Cikole Orchid Forest about 5 km from Lembang’s town square, with a lit bridge at dusk, and Farmhouse and Floating Market as family stops. Compare them in our Lembang attractions table, browse Bandung’s destination guide, and see where to eat in Bandung for Sundanese lunch ideas.

What should you check on the morning of a Tangkuban Perahu visit?

Check the alert level on MAGMA Indonesia, the weather forecast and any closure notice. Pack a mask, a warm layer, cash and shoes with grip. At the rim, stay behind barriers, keep out of crater floors and leave if the steam thickens or the sulphur smell sharpens. Skip the visit if you have breathing problems.

The Geological Agency advised in December 2025 that people should move away immediately if the steam plume intensifies or a pungent gas smell appears, and in July 2026 that gas exposure is a particular risk in rainy or overcast weather. The FCDO adds that people with respiratory conditions such as asthma should carry their regular medicine where volcanic gas or ash is a risk (gov.uk).

Use the BMKG forecast for rain and cloud, and the step-by-step plan below for the day itself. If the level has risen, the park is closed or the summit is lost in cloud, switch to a Lembang park or a city museum rather than waiting at the gate. Save your plan and your driver’s details in My Trip.

  • MAGMA Indonesia alert level: Level I (Normal), or do not go
  • Weather: avoid heavy rain and low cloud
  • Cash for tickets, vehicle entry, parking and the shuttle
  • Mask, warm layer and shoes with grip
  • Return transport confirmed before leaving Bandung
