When is the best time to visit Bandung?
Link to this answerVisit Bandung between June and September for the driest weather, and travel on weekdays outside Indonesian long weekends. BMKG’s 1991–2020 normals make August the driest month and November the wettest, while average temperatures barely change all year. Holidays and traffic matter more than the thermometer when you choose your dates.
Our monthly figures come from Stasiun Geofisika Bandung, the BMKG station in the city, using the 1991–2020 climate normals BMKG supplied to the World Meteorological Organization, archived by the US National Centers for Environmental Information. Normals are 30-year averages, not a forecast. A single year can be much wetter or drier, and BMKG expects the 2026/27 rains to start late.
The calendar is the bigger planning variable. Bandung is the classic weekend and holiday escape from Jakarta: Bandung police counted about 1.5 million vehicles entering the city over the February 2026 Chinese New Year long weekend, CNN Indonesia reported. A midweek stay avoids the worst of that in any season. To choose a base, read where to stay in Bandung.
- Best overall: June to September, ideally midweek. These are the driest and sunniest months in the normals.
- Shoulder months: May and October bring more showers than mid-year but are not the wettest.
- Wettest: November to April, with November and March the rainiest months. Plan indoor back-ups.
- Avoid if you can: the Nyepi–Lebaran break of 6–15 March 2027, Christmas to New Year and any long weekend.
What is Bandung’s weather like each month?
Link to this answerBandung’s average daily temperature stays between 24.3°C and 25.6°C in every month, and average night-time lows sit between 18.3°C and 19.9°C. Rain changes far more: BMKG’s normals range from 43 mm in August to 289 mm in November. Expect rain on most days from November to April and on few days in August.
The table uses BMKG’s 1991–2020 normals for Stasiun Geofisika Bandung, 791 metres above sea level, as submitted to the WMO and archived by NCEI. Rain days are days with at least 1 mm. The file has no daily-maximum series, so we show the daily mean and the average daily minimum rather than estimating an afternoon high.
Holiday notes use the official 2027 national holiday and cuti bersama list, signed on 15 September 2026, and the remaining 2026 dates. For a live outlook rather than averages, use BMKG’s Kota Bandung forecast, which breaks the city down by district.

Why is Bandung cooler than Jakarta?
Link to this answerBandung is cooler because it sits in the West Java highlands rather than on the coast. BMKG’s Bandung station is 791 metres above sea level, compared with 4 metres at Jakarta’s Kemayoran station, and its 1991–2020 mean temperature is 24.9°C against Jakarta’s 28.2°C. You notice the difference most at night.
Air cools as it rises, so altitude does the work. In the same BMKG normals dataset, Bandung’s average daily minimum is 19.3°C across the year, falling to 18.3°C in July and August. Jakarta Kemayoran’s normals show an average minimum of 25.5°C. Pack a light layer for evenings and a warmer jacket for the hills.
Higher ground is colder again. Kawah Putih, south of the city, sits at about 2,400 metres, and Perhutani gives temperatures of roughly 8–22°C there. The tourism ministry describes Lembang as having colder, fresher air than the city. Cooler does not mean dry: Bandung’s relative humidity still averages about 71% across the year in the normals.
When will Bandung’s 2026/27 rainy season start?
Link to this answerLater than usual. BMKG’s West Java climatology station expects about half of the province’s 41 season zones to start the rainy season in November 2026, with 39 zones starting later than normal because of a very strong El Niño. Peak rain is expected mostly in February 2027, with near-normal totals in most zones.
BMKG’s national 2026/27 rainy-season outlook, released on 22 September 2026, says onset is delayed across about 61% of Indonesia’s land area and that most of Java should see the rains begin in December and peak in February. The West Java figures come from BMKG Jawa Barat’s bulletin, as reported by Kompas TV on 24 September 2026.
In practice, an October or early-November 2026 trip may be drier than the long-term averages suggest, but that is not guaranteed. BMKG’s 2 October update, summarised by CNBC Indonesia, expects most of Java to have a shorter rainy season than normal and El Niño to persist into early 2027.
BMKG also asks people to prepare for floods and landslides at the start and peak of the rainy season. Check the Kota Bandung forecast before a hill day and keep a city back-up for Lembang or Ciwidey.
When are Indonesian school holidays and long weekends in 2026–27?
Link to this answerThe busiest Bandung dates in the coming year are Christmas to New Year 2026/27, the Chinese New Year weekend of 5–7 February 2027, the Nyepi–Lebaran break of 6–15 March, Easter weekend and the Iduladha–Waisak run of 15–20 May. West Java’s school holidays add late December to early January and late June to early July.
National holidays and cuti bersama (collective leave days) come from the joint ministerial decree for 2027, published by the State Secretariat. The 2026 decree puts cuti bersama on Thursday 24 December, before Christmas Day on Friday 25 December, as detik reported. Weekends on either side turn many of these dates into breaks of three days or more.
School holidays differ by province. West Java’s semester break runs from 28 December 2026 to 8 January 2027 and Jakarta’s from 19 December 2026 to 2 January 2027, according to CNN Indonesia. The West Bandung education office’s summary of the West Java calendar lists the end-of-year break as 28 June to 9 July 2027; treat that as provisional.
Long weekends hit the roads hardest. Before the May–June 2026 Iduladha break, Cimahi traffic police planned situational one-way schemes and prioritised the Lembang tourist routes, including Jalan Kolonel Masturi and the Cikole area, Kompas reported. The tourism ministry says the Jakarta–Bandung drive normally takes about two hours but can take four to six hours on weekends and holidays.
- 24–27 December 2026: Christmas long weekend.
- 28 December 2026 to 8 January 2027: West Java school holidays, including New Year’s Day on Friday 1 January.
- 5–7 February 2027: Chinese New Year long weekend.
- 6–15 March 2027: Nyepi, Idulfitri and three cuti bersama days together.
- 25–28 March 2027: Good Friday and Easter.
- 15–20 May 2027: Iduladha, Waisak and two cuti bersama days.
- 28 June to 9 July 2027: end-of-year school holidays in West Java (provisional).
When are Ramadan and Lebaran 2027, and should you visit Bandung then?
Link to this answerIdulfitri (Lebaran) 1448 H falls on 10–11 March 2027 under the official holiday decree, so Ramadan should begin around 8–9 February 2027. Avoid Lebaran week if you want a relaxed trip, because Bandung and Lembang fill with holiday traffic. The rest of Ramadan can work well if you check restaurant opening hours.
The 2027 holiday decree sets Idulfitri on Wednesday and Thursday, 10–11 March, with cuti bersama on 9, 12 and 15 March. Nyepi on Monday 8 March sits alongside it, creating a 10-day break from 6 to 15 March. The start of Ramadan and the Eid dates are confirmed separately by the Minister of Religious Affairs, so treat 8–9 February as an estimate.
On the first day of Lebaran 2026, traffic on Jalan Raya Lembang was crawling by 13:30, with queues back to the city boundary, CNN Indonesia reported. During the 2026 return rush, KCIC advised Whoosh passengers to take the feeder train from Bandung or Cimahi rather than drive to Padalarang, Antara reported.

Is it better to visit Bandung on a weekday or at the weekend?
Link to this answerWeekdays, clearly. Jakarta traffic heads into Bandung on Saturday mornings and back on Sunday afternoons, so the toll road, Lembang attractions and shopping areas are busiest then. Arrive on a Sunday evening or Monday, do hill trips midweek and leave before the weekend if your dates allow. Weekend visits work if you start early.
On the Cipularang toll road, Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons are the peak times, and a trip of about three hours can stretch beyond five, Jawa Pos reported in March 2026. It suggests leaving before 07:00 or after 21:00 if you must drive at a weekend.
Rail avoids the toll road but not the station approach. At busy times the feeder train between Bandung Station and Padalarang avoids road queues to the Whoosh station; our Jakarta to Bandung by Whoosh guide explains the chain. For moving around once you arrive, see getting around Bandung.
When is the best time to see Kawah Putih without fog?
Link to this answerGo early on a dry-season weekday, but accept that cloud can cover the crater at any hour. Kawah Putih sits above 2,000 metres, where it can be as cold as 8°C and cloud often rolls in over the rim. An early start mainly beats traffic and crowds; it does not guarantee a clear view.
The tourism ministry’s Kawah Putih page places the crater about 44 km south of central Bandung, a drive of just over two hours depending on traffic, and notes large crowds at weekends and on holidays. It describes clouds rolling in over the surrounding cliffs. The altitude and temperature figures are from Perhutani’s site.
CNN Indonesia’s visitor tips recommend arriving early for photographs and to avoid traffic and crowds, bringing a jacket and carrying a mask for the sulphur smell, which can suddenly strengthen. June to September, the driest months in the Bandung normals, give the lowest odds of rain on the drive. Our Kawah Putih guide covers access, and Lembang vs Ciwidey helps you choose a hill day.
What is the best time for shopping, Lembang, Ciwidey and photography in Bandung?
Link to this answerShop and visit Lembang on weekdays, go to Ciwidey early in the dry season, and save photography for July and August, the sunniest months in BMKG’s normals. Whatever the month, avoid long weekends for anything north of the city, because holiday queues on the main Lembang road can stretch back towards Bandung.
Factory-outlet areas listed by detikJabar include Dago, Jalan Riau, Setiabudi and the streets around Jalan Cihampelas. The tourism ministry estimates about 30 minutes from central Bandung to Lembang and just over two hours to Kawah Putih in normal traffic.
Sunshine totals are from the same BMKG normals. Build the rest of the trip with things to do in Bandung, the Tangkuban Perahu guide and what to eat in Bandung.
- Shopping: weekdays, when moving between outlet areas is quicker than on Jakarta-traffic weekends.
- Lembang: a weekday morning; about 30 minutes from the centre in normal traffic, far longer on long weekends.
- Ciwidey and Kawah Putih: an early weekday start between June and September.
- Photography: July and August average 162.6 and 170.6 hours of sunshine a month; November, December and February average under 100.
- Food: any month; hot noodle soups such as mie kocok suit the rainy season.
How early should you book Bandung hotels for a long weekend?
Link to this answerBook as soon as your dates are fixed if they touch a long weekend, Lebaran or a school holiday, and choose a rate you can cancel. Those dates bring large domestic crowds from Jakarta and the rest of West Java. For a midweek trip outside holidays you can be more flexible, but still compare total price and cancellation deadlines.
Check your dates against the holiday list above, then compare the same room, dates and cancellation terms on more than one site and on the hotel’s own website. If you plan to stay in Lembang over a long weekend, allow for slow trips into the city: on the first day of Lebaran 2026 the main Lembang road was jammed by early afternoon (CNN Indonesia).
