Kawah Putih guide: 2026 entrance fees for foreign and Indonesian visitors, opening hours, the shuttle, getting there from Bandung, sulphur safety and timing.

Key takeaways

How to do a Kawah Putih day trip from Bandung

A one-day plan for Kawah Putih with Ciwidey stops, built around the 07:30 opening and weekday traffic.

  1. Pick a weekday outside Indonesian long weekends, and check the BMKG forecast and any closure notice the evening before.
  2. Book a driver or tour with a confirmed return time, and get in writing whether the foreign-visitor ticket, the ontang-anting shuttle and any vehicle charge are included.
  3. Leave central Bandung by about 05:30 so you reach the gate near the 07:30 opening; the drive via Soreang and Ciwidey takes a little over two hours.
  4. Buy your ticket or shuttle bundle at the gate with cash, then ride the ontang-anting up to the crater.
  5. Wear a mask, stay on paths and bridges, keep your time by the water short and leave at once if you feel unwell.
  6. Continue to Ranca Upas, Situ Patenggang or the Rancabali tea estates for the late morning and lunch.
  7. Start back towards Bandung by mid-afternoon to avoid the slowest traffic on the Soreang–Ciwidey road.

Is Kawah Putih worth it?

Link to this answer

Yes, if you can give it a full weekday and arrive near the 07:30 opening, when crowds are thin and the view is often clearer. It is the most striking landscape near Bandung. It is not worth it as a rushed half-day add-on, on a holiday weekend, or for anyone with asthma or heart or lung problems.

Kawah Putih is a crater lake whose water shifts between pale white and green with temperature, weather and sulphur levels, ringed by bleached cantigi trees, as PRFM News describes it. The catch is distance: about 44–50 km south of the city and a little over two hours by road, according to the tourism ministry. Much of your day is the drive, so it pays off when you combine it with Situ Patenggang, Ranca Upas or the tea estates.

It draws international visitors as well as Indonesians: the manager told Detik that about 40 per cent of the 17,643 visitors over the Iduladha long weekend in May 2026 were foreign, and that a normal day sees fewer than 1,000. Those numbers are the best argument for a weekday. If you have only two days in Bandung and want one hill trip, read Lembang vs Ciwidey first; Tangkuban Perahu is closer.

What is Kawah Putih and where is it?

Kawah Putih, the White Crater, is a crater lake on Mount Patuha in Rancabali, Bandung Regency, at roughly 2,200 m. Perhutani, the state forestry company, runs it as a nature-tourism site through Perhutani Alam Wisata (Palawi). A shuttle climbs about 5 km from the lower car park at the gate to the crater rim.

Perhutani lists Kawah Putih as an ecotourism site formed from the Mount Patuha caldera, with a sunrise point at Sunan Ibu, camping and forest trekking. A Pikiran Rakyat report republished by Perhutani gives its altitude as 2,194 m, quotes the Ciwidey cluster manager of Perhutani Alam Wisata (Palawi) Risorsis, and records 39,499 visitors between 22 December 2025 and 1 January 2026.

The tourism ministry describes visitors parking at the main gate and riding a mini shuttle about 5 km uphill, with departures roughly every five minutes; a dry crater, Kawah Patuha, lies about 600 m to the north-west. PRFM News adds the Skywalk Cantigi and a floating bridge that take you closer to the crater, and gives the address as Jalan Raya Ciwidey–Patengan KM 11, Rancabali.

How much is the Kawah Putih entrance fee in 2026?

Link to this answer

Foreign visitors pay about Rp81,000–90,000 and Indonesians Rp28,000–31,000, according to a May 2026 PRFM News report. Bundled tickets of Rp43,000–74,000 generally add the ontang-anting shuttle and bridge. Driving your own vehicle up to the crater car park costs a further Rp162,000–179,000. Confirm what each ticket includes at the gate.

We found no official online price list, so these figures come from PRFM News, part of the Pikiran Rakyat group, on 3 May 2026. The report does not say whether the bundle range applies to foreign visitors, so ask. The figures are consistent with Detik’s April 2024 list: Rp28,000 domestic, Rp81,000 foreign, Rp29,000 for the shuttle and a Rp162,000 forest-crossing charge. Prices appear to have risen modestly rather than jumped.

The two decisions at the gate are whether your ticket includes the shuttle and whether your vehicle will drive up. The tourism ministry says visitors usually leave the car at the main car park and take the shuttle; a private vehicle going up pays a per-vehicle emissions charge on top of everyone’s tickets. On a tour, ask in writing which of these are included, because a cheaper tour that excludes the foreign-visitor ticket and shuttle can cost more overall.

What are Kawah Putih’s opening hours?

Link to this answer

Kawah Putih opens daily from 07:30. PRFM News reported a 16:30 close in May 2026, while Detik’s 2024 listing gave 16:00, so aim to reach the crater well before mid-afternoon. For sunrise from the Sunan Ibu point, confirm early-entry arrangements with the operator, because the standard opening time comes after dawn.

The 07:30 opening is consistent across PRFM News (May 2026) and Detik (April 2024). The closing time differs, so plan around the earlier one. Leaving the crater by about 15:00 also helps you clear the Ciwidey road before evening.

Holiday mornings start early: during Lebaran 2026, RRI reported visitors arriving from early morning to catch the sunrise. The site can also close at short notice; in October 2019 CNN Indonesia reported Kawah Putih shut because of a forest fire. Check the operator’s channels, or ask your driver to call ahead, on the morning you go.

How do you get to Kawah Putih from Bandung?

Link to this answer

Most visitors hire a car with driver or join a tour, because the crater is about 44–50 km south of central Bandung and takes a little over two hours via Soreang and Ciwidey. Public buses and angkot minibuses work but are slow. Do not count on booking an app ride back from the mountain.

The tourism ministry gives the route south through Soreang to Ciwidey and a journey of just over two hours, depending on traffic; PRFM News puts it at about 50 km and two hours. Holiday traffic stretches that: during Lebaran 2026, some visitors gave up on the Soreang–Ciwidey road, RRI reported.

By public transport, the ministry describes a bus from Leuwipanjang terminal towards Ciwidey and then an angkot to the entrance, with the shuttle covering the final stretch. That suits a patient solo traveller, but check the last return departures before setting off. An app car may take you there; whether a driver will accept a return job from the car park is uncertain, so arrange the return before you leave Bandung.

For most visitors, a private driver for the day or a tour combining Kawah Putih with Situ Patenggang or Ranca Upas is the practical choice. Agree the start time, stops, return time and who pays for tickets, shuttle and parking. Our Lembang vs Ciwidey guide explains how to compare driver and tour quotes, and our Bandung things-to-do guide shows how to fit the trip into a longer stay.

Is Kawah Putih safe? Sulphur gas, time limits and masks

Link to this answer

It is an established tourist site, but the sulphur smell is strong and the gas can irritate the lungs. Bring a well-fitting mask, keep your time at the water’s edge short, do not touch the water and leave at once if you feel dizzy or breathless. People with asthma or heart or lung conditions should skip it.

We could not find a current time limit published by the operator. You may see 15 minutes quoted online, but we could not confirm it as a current rule, so follow posted signs and staff instructions on the day. CNN Indonesia’s visitor tips advise bringing a mask because the sulphur smell can be strong at any time, and warm clothes because it is about 8–12°C at the crater.

The UK government’s Indonesia travel advice tells people with respiratory conditions such as asthma to carry enough of their regular medicine where volcanic gas or ash is a risk. At Tangkuban Perahu, north of Bandung, the geology agency warns that volcanic gas is more dangerous in the rainy season or overcast weather (Tempo, July 2026). We apply the same caution here and suggest a shorter stop on still, misty days.

Our view on who should avoid it: anyone with asthma, COPD or a heart condition, pregnant travellers and babies. If in doubt, ask a doctor before you travel. Children can visit with adults who keep them on the paths and away from the water.

  • Bring a well-fitting mask and a warm layer.
  • Stay on paths and bridges; do not touch the water or the crust at its edge.
  • Leave immediately if you feel dizzy, nauseous or short of breath.
  • Shorten the stop on still, misty days.
  • Obey closures and staff instructions.

What is the best time of day to visit Kawah Putih?

Link to this answer

Arrive at the 07:30 opening on a weekday. Early mornings bring fewer people, shorter jams and usually clearer photos, while cloud often rolls in around the crater. The drier months suit it best. Avoid Indonesian long weekends, when visitor numbers can be several times higher than on a normal day.

CNN Indonesia recommends the dry season, roughly March to August, and early mornings for fewer crowds, less traffic and clearer pictures. The tourism ministry notes that weekends and holidays are busy and that cloud often rolls in around the cliffs. Mist can make the lake look ghostly, which some visitors prefer; if colour and clarity matter, go early on a clear day.

Visitor numbers show why the calendar matters. The manager told Detik that normal days see fewer than 1,000 visitors, while the Iduladha holiday peaked at 6,555 on 31 May 2026, with queues reaching the provincial road. For weather, check the BMKG forecast the evening before.

What can you combine with Kawah Putih on the same day?

Pair Kawah Putih with one or two stops on the same road: Situ Patenggang for a lake and boat ride, Ranca Upas for deer and a hot pool, or the Rancabali tea slopes for photographs. Do Kawah Putih first, while it is quiet, then work outwards. Do not try to add Lembang the same day.

According to PRFM News (May 2026), Situ Patenggang sits at about 1,600 m on Jalan Raya Ciwidey–Rancabali, opens 09:00–17:00 and charges Rp25,000–100,000 depending on package, with boats to the Batu Cinta and Pulau Asmara spots. Ranca Upas, at about 1,700 m and on the same stretch of road as Kawah Putih, charges Rp31,000–35,000 for a day visit and opens 07:00–17:30; Perhutani lists deer feeding, camping and a naturally heated pool there.

Further on, PRFM describes the Rancabali and Cibuni tea estates, where the plantation road is generally free, and Kawah Rengganis hot springs at about Rp70,000 including a suspension bridge. Choose by your group: Ranca Upas for families, Situ Patenggang for couples, the tea roads for photographers. For the wider choice between south and north, see Lembang vs Ciwidey and our Bandung things-to-do guide.

What should you pack and check before a Kawah Putih day trip?

Link to this answer

Pack a mask, a warm layer, rain gear, water, cash and charged phones. Check the weather, any closure notice and whether your tour includes the foreign-visitor ticket and shuttle. Confirm your return transport before leaving Bandung, and plan to be heading back by mid-afternoon to avoid the worst of the Ciwidey road.

It is cold at the crater, about 8–12°C according to CNN Indonesia, and there is little shade when the sun is out, so bring both a jacket and a hat. Cash covers tickets, the shuttle, parking and food stalls; do not assume card payment at the gate.

Save your driver’s number and the exact pickup point offline, and add the trip to My Trip with the return time. If the crater is closed or clouded in when you arrive, move straight on to Ranca Upas or Situ Patenggang rather than waiting, since both are on the same road. The step-by-step plan below summarises the day, and our where to stay in Bandung guide helps if you want a base with an easy southbound start.

  • Mask, warm layer, rain jacket, hat and sunscreen
  • Cash for tickets, the shuttle, parking and food
  • Water and snacks for the drive
  • Driver or tour confirmation with the return time
  • BMKG weather check and any closure notice
