English menus, brunch, coffee and modern Indonesian food in Bandung, plus how visitors use GrabFood or GoFood and keep stomach risks lower.

Key takeaways

Which Bandung restaurants are easiest for foreign visitors?

Link to this answer

Start with Theo’s Wife Lois for bakery brunch, Wheels Coffee Roasters for coffee and Western plates, Goodwheel Companion for smoked brisket, Tapal Market for modern Indonesian food and the new Mannaka Bandung for a Japanese-style set meal. Each publishes menus or hours through official channels. None can guarantee you will not get ill.

We chose these five because each runs an official website, Instagram account or link page with a current menu or opening hours, and most of those menus are in English. That makes it easier to see what you are ordering before you sit down. We have not inspected the kitchens or eaten at them for this guide; every venue detail below comes from the venues’ own channels, checked on 16 October 2026.

“Lower risk” describes your choices, not a promise about a restaurant. Food cooked to order and served hot, sealed or treated drinking water, and a clear menu that shows what is raw all reduce the chance of a problem. A busy kitchen turns over ingredients faster, but you can only judge that on the day. Ask whether ice and drinking water are filtered or treated rather than assuming.

For the wider city, start with our Bandung destination guide, then Bandung restaurant picks for Sundanese dishes. If you have not chosen a base yet, where to stay in Bandung compares Braga, Dago and Lembang.

What should you order at Theo’s Wife Lois?

Link to this answer

Go to Theo’s Wife Lois for bakery breakfasts, coffee and hot all-day plates from an English menu. Its July 2026 Progo menu runs from bagels, pasta and ramen to steaks, burgers and Korean-style rice sets. Instagram lists weekday hours of 07.00–21.00 and weekends until 22.00; check before you go.

Theo’s Wife Lois, which signs itself TWL, describes itself on Instagram as a bakery, coffee and all-day dining spot. It lists two Bandung addresses: Jalan Progo No. 23 and Paskal Hypersquare, Blok G-105. We found no official website, so its Instagram and the link page in its bio are the places to check hours, reservations and the current menus.

The Progo e-menu dated July 2026, linked from that page, is written in English. Hot, cooked-to-order choices include rigatoni and beef lasagne, ramen and laksa, chicken-curry and beef rice bowls, burgers, and steaks with fries or mashed polenta. If you are being careful in your first days, leave the cured-salmon salad, the salmon poke bowl and leafy salads for later. The menu states that tax and service are excluded.

The menu does not label dishes as vegetarian, vegan or halal, although it includes salads and a hummus-and-vegetable option. If you have a dietary requirement, message the branch before you go. We could not verify a GrabFood or GoFood listing from its official channels.

Is Tapal Market a good choice for modern Indonesian food?

Link to this answer

Yes, if you want Indonesian flavours explained in English. Tapal Market, on Jalan Banceuy near Braga, publishes a bilingual menu of contemporary local dishes such as Soto Banceuy beef-shank soup and braised semur brisket. Instagram lists daily hours of 11:00–22:00, with weekend breakfast from 08:00; check before you go.

Tapal Market’s official website gives its address as Jalan Banceuy No. 46–48, Braga, Sumur Bandung, close to the Braga heritage streets. Its About page describes reinterpreting local ingredients and heritage techniques, and its Instagram calls it casual dining with Indonesian contemporary food. Reservations are handled by WhatsApp through the link page in its bio.

The kitchen menu linked from the website’s menu page gives each dish an Indonesian name with an English description underneath. For a cautious first meal, hot mains are the easier choice: Soto Banceuy (beef shank and stock with rice), grilled chicken with gulai sauce, Ramen Lodeh or Nasi Goreng Lidah Sapi. Starters built on shaved ice or raw vegetables, such as Es Asinan Kota Tua or the seasonal-fish salad, are ones to save until you feel settled.

The menus we saw carry no vegetarian, vegan or halal labels, so ask staff if that matters. The kitchen menu linked from the website still says breakfast is in development, while Instagram now lists weekend breakfast from 08:00 to 11:00, so ask which menu applies. We could not verify a GrabFood or GoFood listing from its official channels.

What is Mannaka Bandung, and is it ready for visitors?

Link to this answer

Mannaka Bandung is a new Japanese-inspired matcha and coffee bar, the Bandung outpost of Mannaka in Bali, serving its own ichiju-sansai set of one soup and three dishes. It is at Jalan Purnawarman No. 54, Tamansari. Instagram lists soft-opening hours of 09.00–22.00, with last food orders at 20.30.

On its Instagram, which posts jointly with the Bali account, Mannaka Bandung announced a soft opening on 12 September 2026 and has posted in English since. One post explains that the team made its own version of ichiju-sansai, the Japanese home-style format of one soup with three dishes. A rice-and-soup set is a gentle option on a sensitive day.

Because it has only just opened, there is little track record yet, and we could not view its full menu or any delivery listing without logging in to Instagram. Matcha and coffee are its stated speciality. Ask whether any part of the set is raw, cured or served cold, and whether iced drinks use ice made from filtered water.

Hours and the menu may change once the soft opening ends. Check the latest post or call before you go, especially in the evening, as the bio lists last orders at 20.30 for food and 21.00 for drinks. Jalan Purnawarman is in central Bandung; see getting around Bandung for ride options.

Is Wheels Coffee Roasters good for brunch and Western food in Bandung?

Link to this answer

Yes. Wheels Coffee Roasters is a Bandung specialty roaster founded in 2017, with cafés serving coffee, brunch, pasta and made-to-order steaks. Its Juanda 256 branch in Dago has an English, photo-led menu that marks vegetarian dishes. The website lists 07.00–22.00 daily at every café; check before you go.

The official website lists Bandung cafés at Jalan Ir. H. Juanda No. 256 (Dago), Jalan Prof. Eyckman No. 32 (Pasteur), Jalan L. L. R.E. Martadinata No. 65 (Riau) and Jalan Dr. Djunjunan No. 157, plus partner outlets. Its journal describes the Juanda branch as about 70% green space, with European-influenced food including pasta, brunch and made-to-order steak.

The Dago menu linked from the website’s menu page is in English, shows a photo of each dish and uses icons for vegetarian dishes, spicy dishes and preparation time. Hot brunch plates such as omelettes, pasta and steaks cooked to order suit a cautious stomach better than raw salads. The menu states that prices carry 5% service and 10% government tax.

For delivery, the menu page links the Eyckman 32 branch to both GoFood and GrabFood. No halal statement appears on the pages we checked, so ask the branch if that matters. Wheels also runs a roastery and a coffee academy if you want to take beans home or learn to brew.

What is Goodwheel Companion known for?

Link to this answer

Goodwheel Companion is a Texas-style barbecue restaurant on Jalan Badak Singa in Coblong, best for smoked brisket, short plate, burgers and pizza. Its Instagram calls it “Indonesia’s Finest Halal Brisket” and lists hours of 11.00–22.00 Monday to Thursday and 07.00–23.00 Friday to Sunday; check before you go.

Goodwheel’s link page describes the business as Texas BBQ, a healthy bar, a general store, a creative studio and a workshop. Its menu, linked from that page, is mostly in English: personal brisket or short-plate plates with fries or mac and cheese, butter-rice bowls with brisket or Nashville chicken, burgers, pizzas and family platters. It states that prices are before tax and service.

Slow-smoked meat, sliced and served hot, is a sensible choice for a cautious first week, but the plates also come with coleslaw or fresh salad. If you are being careful, ask whether you can swap those for fries or mashed potato. The halal wording is the restaurant’s own description on Instagram; if you need certification, ask to see it.

The same link page links to Goodwheel’s GrabFood, GoFood and ShopeeFood listings and takes reservations by WhatsApp. Its GoFood listing names the address as Jalan Badak Singa No. 15; use the map pin on the link page to find the entrance.

How do visitors order food to a Bandung hotel with GrabFood or GoFood?

Install Grab or Gojek before you fly, register with a phone number that can receive a one-time code, and add a card. Grab says foreign-issued cards work with a foreign payment fee shown before you pay. Gojek explains adding cards and suggests an Indonesian or Singapore number if yours is refused.

Grab: its sign-up guide lets you register with Google, Facebook or a phone number, sends a four-digit code by SMS, and asks you to verify the account with a selfie, a credit or debit card or Facebook before your first booking. The GrabFood page lists cards, OVO and cash, plus scheduled delivery and self pick-up. Grab’s foreign payment fee page says a foreign-issued card adds a fee shown at checkout. The app runs in English and several other languages, with optional menu translation that Grab warns may be inaccurate (language settings).

Gojek: its account guide asks for an email address and phone number, sends a code by SMS, and recommends an Indonesian or Singapore number if yours is not accepted; virtual and VoIP numbers are not supported (registration help). Cards can be added for GoFood, GoCar and GoRide (card guide), but the help centre does not say whether foreign cards work, so carry some cash. In-app tips need a GoPay balance (tip guide). If your Indonesia eSIM is data-only, keep your home SIM able to receive the code.

Grab’s dietary filter can show halal, vegetarian or vegan options, but Grab says the labels come from merchant declarations and AI prediction and can be wrong (dietary preferences). For rides, GrabCar advertises a fixed fare and trip sharing, and GoCar lists upfront fares, Share Your Trip, an emergency button and GoCar XL for groups of up to six. Our getting around Bandung guide covers the options.

  • Give the full hotel name and address, pin the main entrance, and add a note asking the rider to leave the order at reception if you cannot come down.
  • Choose dishes that travel hot, such as soups, rice dishes, noodles and grilled meat, from restaurants whose menus you can read.
  • In your first days, skip iced drinks, cut fruit and salads in delivery orders; they spend the ride at outside temperature.
  • Check the bag is sealed and the order number matches, eat hot food promptly, and do not keep leftovers without a fridge.
  • Report missing, wrong or spoiled items in the app with a photo; Grab says card refunds take two to three working days, or up to 30 days depending on your bank (missing items).

How can you lower the risk of an upset stomach in Bandung?

Link to this answer

Drink sealed bottled or properly treated water, because the UK Foreign Office says Indonesian tap water is not safe to drink. Choose food cooked to order and served piping hot, be cautious with ice, salads and fruit you have not peeled, and buy travel insurance that covers medical treatment. Nothing removes the risk completely.

The FCDO’s Indonesia health page says tap water is not safe to drink, warns that local medical care can be poor, and tells travellers to have adequate travel health insurance; see its travel insurance advice. TravelHealthPro, from the UK’s National Travel Health Network and Centre, recommends hepatitis A vaccination for previously unvaccinated travellers and typhoid vaccination for most, so see a travel health clinic well before you go. If symptoms are severe or do not settle, get medical help; the FCDO keeps a list of medical facilities.

TravelHealthPro’s food and water hygiene advice is practical: avoid ice where sanitation is poor, prefer fruit you peel yourself, and choose street food only when it is cooked thoroughly in front of you and served hot. Sealed drinks, and tea or coffee made with boiled water, are generally safer. Wash your hands or use alcohol gel before eating.

Street food is part of Bandung’s appeal, so use judgement rather than avoiding it entirely. Pick stalls that cook to order with a steady queue, and try one new thing at a time. Our guide to what to eat in Bandung explains the dishes, and Bandung restaurant picks covers Sundanese favourites. A guided food tour lets you try street snacks with someone who knows the vendors; ask the operator about drinking water and dietary needs.
