What is the best way to get around Bandung?

Link to this answer

For most visitors, Grab or Gojek cars are the easiest way around Bandung, with a car and driver for Lembang or Ciwidey days. Arrive from Jakarta by Whoosh and the feeder train or by KA Parahyangan, or fly into Husein Sastranegara, which reopened to jets in August 2026. Buses and angkot suit confident travellers.

Bandung’s transport picture changed in 2026: Husein Sastranegara airport returned to jet service on 14 August, the regional BRT network changed operator on 1 August, and the Whoosh feeder moved to a new entrance at Bandung Station in March. Each section below links the operator, government or news source we checked on 16 October 2026.

If you are still choosing a base, read where to stay in Bandung: the right area saves more time than any transport trick. Save routes and bookings in My Trip.

Which airport should you fly into for Bandung: Husein Sastranegara or Kertajati?

Link to this answer

For domestic flights, Husein Sastranegara (BDO) in the city is Bandung’s airport again: jets returned on 14 August 2026 after almost three years at Kertajati. Kertajati (KJT), in Majalengka, kept Scoot’s Singapore service and its hajj and umrah role. Always check the airport code on your ticket, because the transfers are very different.

Commercial jet flights moved from Husein to Kertajati in October 2023. After the transport ministry recertified the airport, InJourney Airports reopened Husein to commercial jets on 14 August 2026, with Garuda Indonesia flying the first service from Denpasar (detikJabar). Garuda and Citilink resumed domestic jet routes to Medan, Pekanbaru, Padang, Batam, Pontianak, Makassar and Denpasar (detikFinance), and Wings Air started propeller flights to Lampung and Palembang on 6–7 August (Kompas).

International flights from Husein were targeted for October 2026, with Singapore and Malaysia expected first, but on 23 September the mayor said airlines were still securing permits (Antara); we found no confirmed first international flight by 16 October. Kertajati’s domestic flights stopped in June 2025, leaving Scoot’s twice-weekly Singapore service as its regular route in December 2025 (detikJabar). West Java’s governor said in July 2026 that hajj and umrah flights would stay at Kertajati (Kumparan).

None of the routes announced for Husein connect with Jakarta, so most long-haul visitors land in Jakarta and continue overland. Our Jakarta airport to Bandung guide compares same-day and overnight options.

How do you get from Kertajati airport to Bandung?

Take a DAMRI airport bus or a pre-booked transfer along the Cisumdawu toll road, and allow about one and a half hours to Bandung in normal traffic, longer at busy times. Check DAMRI’s current route and timetable against your flight before you travel, because Kertajati handles few flights and services can change.

On a test run with the transport minister after the Cisumdawu toll road opened, DAMRI buses took about 75 minutes from the Pasteur toll gate in Bandung to the airport (Kompas, October 2023). West Java’s transport agency gave about 1.5 hours from Bandung in July 2025 and said some airport connections were free to passengers because the province paid operators per passenger (Liputan6); check whether that still applies.

Use DAMRI’s route directory for current Kertajati services and stops. If your flight lands late or you are travelling as a group, a pre-booked transfer to the hotel door can be simpler. Arriving at a Jakarta airport instead? See Jakarta airport to Bandung for the Whoosh, rail and road chains.

How do you reach central Bandung by Whoosh?

Link to this answer

Book Whoosh from Halim in Jakarta to Padalarang, then take the KAI feeder train to Bandung Station in the city centre. Tegalluar Summarecon, the end of the line, suits eastern and southern Bandung and has a DAMRI shuttle to Bandung Station. Karawang is an intermediate stop on some trains. Check whether your fare includes the feeder.

KCIC lists four Whoosh stations: Halim, Karawang, Padalarang and Tegalluar. At Padalarang the feeder runs to Bandung Station, and Commuter Line Bandung Raya also stops there; Tegalluar, near the Summarecon toll exit, serves areas such as Kopo and Buah Batu. Karawang opened to passengers on 24 December 2024 (Antara).

Since early March 2026 the feeder has used a new waiting room on the west side of Bandung Station, reached through the north entrance on Jalan Kebon Kawung; the east and south entrances no longer serve feeder passengers (Kontan). You can also board it at Cimahi (Antara). Not every fare includes it: KCIC’s Padalarang–Tegalluar Summarecon promotion excluded the feeder (KCIC).

At Tegalluar, a 2024 KCIC release lists a DAMRI shuttle to Bandung Station, a Summarecon bus and Bluebird taxis. Book on the official Whoosh site and read our Jakarta to Bandung by Whoosh guide for the door-to-door comparison.

Should you take Whoosh, KA Parahyangan or a travel van between Jakarta and Bandung?

Link to this answer

Take Whoosh if you start near Halim and are heading for central Bandung via the feeder, or eastern Bandung via Tegalluar. Take KA Parahyangan from Gambir for a city-centre to city-centre trip with no change. Choose a travel van for convenient pickup points, but avoid weekend peaks, when the toll road can add hours.

KA Parahyangan replaced the Argo Parahyangan name on 1 February 2025 (CNA Indonesia). It runs between Gambir and Bandung with stops that can include Jatinegara, Bekasi, Purwakarta and Cimahi, and Kompas gave a journey time of about 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours in February 2026. Book through KAI or the Access by KAI app.

Travel vans, known locally simply as travel, run between pickup points in Jakarta and Bandung. Operators named by Jawa Pos include Cititrans, XTrans and Daytrans, with XTrans taking about 2.5 to 3 hours in normal traffic. At weekends the Cipularang toll road peaks on Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons (Jawa Pos).

Compare door-to-door time rather than the headline journey: a van that drops you near your hotel can beat a faster train plus two transfers. The calculator in our Whoosh guide does exactly this with your own quotes.

Can foreign visitors use Grab and Gojek in Bandung?

Link to this answer

Yes. Both apps run cars, motorbikes and food delivery in Bandung, and both work for visitors after some set-up. Grab lets you register without a local number and runs in English; Gojek verifies by SMS and may need an Indonesian or Singapore number. Add a Visa or Mastercard enrolled in 3D Secure, or pay cash.

Grab’s visitor page says you can create an account without a local number and use the app in eight languages, including English. Gojek’s sign-up help sends an SMS code and suggests an Indonesian or Singapore number if yours fails; it does not support virtual or VoIP numbers and recommends registering while you are in a country where it operates, with any VPN switched off (Gojek help). Both are listed on their Indonesian sites, Grab and Gojek; these are plain, non-affiliate links.

Gojek accepts saved cards for GoRide, GoCar, GoBluebird and GoFood; its guidance requires Visa, Mastercard or JCB enrolled in 3D Secure and takes a refundable Rp1,000 verification charge. Grab’s Indonesian terms say cards issued outside Indonesia may incur a Foreign Service Fee, shown before you confirm. Your bank may block the first overseas charge, so keep some rupiah cash, and see eSIM for Indonesia for the data you need.

The FCDO advises checking that the driver matches the app, sharing your journey and being wary of drivers who approach you claiming to be app-registered (FCDO). Grab set up an official arrivals pickup point at Husein in 2018 (Grab), but we found no published 2026 pickup arrangements for either airport, so follow the in-app pin and airport signs. At Tegalluar station, KCIC asks app passengers to use the station pickup area.

Can you use taxis, buses and angkot in Bandung?

Link to this answer

Yes. Bluebird taxis are the FCDO-recommended metered option and can also be booked in Gojek as GoBluebird. Metro Jabar Trans, formerly Trans Metro Pasundan, runs low-fare buses on corridors such as Leuwipanjang–Dago. Angkot shared minibuses cover fixed local routes but take local knowledge, so app rides are simpler on a short stay.

The FCDO advises using registered taxi companies such as Bluebird and checking the driver’s identity (FCDO). Gojek lists GoBluebird among its services, and KCIC lists Bluebird at Tegalluar station.

West Java renamed the Bandung Basin BRT from Trans Metro Pasundan to Metro Jabar Trans on 31 December 2024 (Antara). Kompas listed six main corridors in July 2026: Leuwipanjang–Soreang, Kota Baru Parahyangan–Alun-alun Bandung, Baleendah–BEC, Leuwipanjang–Dago, Dipatiukur–Jatinangor and Leuwipanjang–Majalaya. DAMRI took over four corridors on 1 August 2026 and kept the fare at Rp4,900 a trip (IDN Times).

Check the last bus: in June 2026 the Leuwipanjang–Majalaya corridor ran only until midday, Good News From Indonesia reported. Older guides still use the Trans Metro Pasundan name. We found no official English angkot route guide; if you try one, carry your destination written down and keep a ride app as back-up.

When is traffic worst in Bandung?

Link to this answer

Traffic is worst at weekends and over long weekends, when Jakarta visitors arrive on Saturday mornings and leave on Sunday afternoons, and on the roads up to Lembang. At holiday peaks, police run situational one-way schemes on Lembang routes. Do hill trips early on weekdays and allow extra time for any station or airport run.

Police counted about 1.5 million vehicles entering Bandung over the February 2026 Chinese New Year long weekend (CNN Indonesia). On the toll road, Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons are the weekend peaks, with jams most common between Purwakarta and Karawang (Jawa Pos).

For Lembang, Cimahi traffic police prioritised Jalan Kolonel Masturi, Simpang Beatrix and Cikole during the 2026 Iduladha break (Kompas). On the first day of Lebaran 2026, the main Lembang road was crawling by 13:30 with queues back to the city boundary (CNN Indonesia). Our best time to visit Bandung guide lists the 2026–27 holiday dates.

How do you get to Lembang and Ciwidey without a car?

Link to this answer

Use a ride-hailing car, a car with driver or a tour. Lembang is about 30 minutes north of central Bandung in normal traffic, while Kawah Putih near Ciwidey is about 44 km south, just over two hours by road. Buses and angkot reach Ciwidey from Leuwipanjang terminal, but a driver makes a multi-stop day far easier.

The tourism ministry says Lembang can be reached from Bandung Station by taxi, ride-hailing app or public transport, and suggests public transport or a car with driver for foreign visitors. For Kawah Putih, it describes a bus from Leuwipanjang towards Ciwidey and an angkot to the entrance, where shuttles run up to the crater; drivers park at the entry gate. Metro Jabar Trans’s Leuwipanjang–Soreang corridor covers part of the southern route (Kompas).

The return is the harder half: do not assume an app ride will be available in the hills late in the day, so agree it in advance with a driver or tour. Use Lembang vs Ciwidey to choose a side, the Tangkuban Perahu and Kawah Putih guides for site details, and the three-day itinerary without a car to fit one hill day.

Should you hire a car or a car with driver in Bandung?

Link to this answer

Hire a car with driver rather than self-drive unless you are used to Indonesian roads. The FCDO calls traffic discipline very poor, warns that foreigners in even minor incidents can face extortion and suggests a private driver. A UK licence is not valid on its own; you need a UK-issued International Driving Permit and insurance that covers driving.

These points come from the FCDO’s Indonesia safety and security advice, which also says to wait for the police at the scene after an accident. Bandung adds weekend congestion and holiday one-way schemes on hill routes. Read do I need an International Driving Permit? before booking.

For a driver, agree the route, hours, overtime, fuel, tolls, parking and entry tickets in writing, as our Lembang vs Ciwidey guide explains. If you do self-drive, compare the insurance excess carefully; our guide to the car hire excess trap explains what to check.

Ad · Compare self-drive hire for Bandung or Jakarta pickups. Check the insurance excess, the permit requirement and the pickup location; for most visitors a local car with driver is the easier choice in Bandung traffic.
