Key takeaways

When is the best time to visit Hong Kong?

Link to this answer

Mid-October to early December is the best time for most visitors. Hong Kong Observatory normals give November a 24.5°C average high, 39.3 mm of rain and about six rain days, with the typhoon peak behind you. January and February come next. June to September is hot, very wet and the main typhoon season.

The Hong Kong Observatory’s 1991–2020 normals show a year of two halves. From October to February, rainfall stays at or below about 120 mm a month and humidity eases to 70–79%; from May to September, every month brings more than 290 mm of rain and between 15 and 19 rain days.

Typhoons decide summer trips. The Observatory’s tropical cyclone statistics record an average of 2.43 days a year with Signal No. 8 or higher, almost all of them between June and October. Autumn gives you most of the dry weather with only a small leftover risk.

Once you have dates, plan the days with the Hong Kong 3-day itinerary or the Hong Kong 7-day itinerary, and read the Hong Kong destination guide for budgets.

What is Hong Kong’s weather month by month?

Link to this answer

Average highs rise from 18.7°C in January to 31.6°C in July. June is the wettest month at 491.5 mm, and December the driest at 28.8 mm. October is the sunniest month and March the dullest, with only 100 hours of bright sunshine. Humidity sits above 80% from March to August.

All figures are 1991–2020 normals from the Hong Kong Observatory. Temperatures and humidity are for the Observatory’s headquarters, rainfall is the monthly mean for Hong Kong, and sunshine is measured at King’s Park. A rain day is any day with at least 0.1 mm, so a high count includes light showers.

Two columns matter most for planning: rain days, which fall to between five and eight a month from October to February, and humidity, which explains why a 25°C day in April can feel heavier than one in November. Sunshine peaks in July and October, at 197.3 and 197.8 hours.

Nights stay warm in every season. The gap between the average high and low is only about 4–5°C in each month, so summer nights average 26–27°C from June to September, and even January’s average low is 14.6°C. Pack for humidity rather than for cold evenings, except from December to February.

What is each Hong Kong season like?

Link to this answer

Autumn, October and November, is warm, sunny and dry. Winter, December to February, is cool and dry but greyer by February. Spring, March and April, is mild, very humid and often dull. Summer, May to September, is hot, wet and stormy, with June the wettest month and August the typhoon peak.

The Observatory normals put the year’s lowest humidity in December, at 70%, and its highest in April and May, at 83%. Spring’s low sunshine, around 100 hours in each of February and March, is the main reason March is a weaker month than its temperatures suggest.

Winter is mild by British standards: January’s average low is 14.6°C, and rain falls on fewer than six days. Pack a light jumper for evenings by the harbour and on hilltop viewpoints, and expect stronger sun and longer bright spells than in spring.

  • October–November: sunny, dry and warm; the best all-round months
  • December–February: cool and dry; Lunar New Year in early February
  • March–April: humid and often dull; Art Basel and the Sevens
  • May–September: hot, wet and typhoon-prone; plan indoor anchors

How likely is a typhoon signal during your trip?

Link to this answer

Hong Kong averages 15.87 days a year with at least Signal No. 1 and 2.43 days with No. 8 or higher, based on 1991–2020 records. August is the riskiest month, with 0.80 days of No. 8 or above on average, followed by September and July. The averages show no signal days at all from December to March.

The Observatory defines Signal No. 8 as gale or storm-force wind blowing or expected generally in Hong Kong near sea level, at sustained speeds of 63–117 km/h with gusts that may exceed 180 km/h; No. 10 means hurricane-force wind of 118 km/h or more (Hong Kong Observatory). The monthly averages below come from its 1991–2020 signal statistics.

The FCDO gives the typhoon season as May to November, warns that storms can bring flooding and landslides, and says public offices and public transport shut down when a Typhoon 8 signal is issued. Expect ferries, the Ngong Ping cable car and outdoor attractions to stop, and keep a flexible day in the plan.

Signals can also strand cross-border trips: on 25 July 2026, the Hong Kong–Macao bridge bus stopped at 22:30, twenty minutes after Signal No. 8 was raised (HZMB notice).

What should you do in Hong Kong when it rains?

Keep indoor anchors in every plan between March and September. West Kowloon’s M+ and the Hong Kong Palace Museum can fill a wet day, but check their closing days: M+ shuts on Mondays and the Palace Museum on Tuesdays. Use the MTR rather than walking between districts, and save hill viewpoints for clear mornings.

M+ opens 10:00–18:00 from Tuesday to Sunday, until 22:00 on Fridays, with standard adult tickets at HK$190; it is also closed on 31 October 2026. The Hong Kong Palace Museum opens 10:00–18:00 on most days and until 20:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays, and closes on Tuesdays, except public holidays, and on the first two days of Lunar New Year.

For more wet-weather ideas, see Hong Kong in the rain. On dull spring days, check the view before paying for a summit trip, as explained in is the Peak worth it.

When is the best time for hiking and the outlying islands?

Link to this answer

November to February. Rain days fall to about five to eight a month and humidity to 70–79%, which makes Lantau, Lamma and the country-park trails far more comfortable than in summer. Ngong Ping 360 and the outlying-island ferries can stop in severe weather, so keep island days flexible between May and October.

Ngong Ping 360 runs 10:00–18:00 on weekdays and 09:00–18:30 at weekends and on public holidays, and its FAQ says the cable car may be suspended in severe weather such as rainstorms or thunderstorms. On scheduled servicing days the cable car stops while Ngong Ping Village stays open.

Ferries to Lamma run from Central Pier 4 to Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan (Hong Kong and Kowloon Ferry). The FCDO advises staying on marked paths in country parks and not carrying valuables when hiking.

Who should go to Hong Kong when?

First-timers should aim for mid-October to early December; hikers and island hoppers for November to February; art and sport fans for late March to mid-April; and festival lovers for Lunar New Year. Families tied to summer holidays can make July and August work with indoor plans and flexible bookings.

The table uses the Observatory’s 1991–2020 normals, its signal statistics and the organisers’ 2026–27 dates. If your dates are fixed, the bigger wins come from refundable bookings and indoor anchors rather than from shifting a week.

Families can compare indoor and outdoor options in Hong Kong with kids and is Ocean Park worth it.

How should you book flights and hotels around Hong Kong’s calendar?

Link to this answer

Fix your dates around Art Basel, Easter and the Sevens if you are travelling in spring, then hold a refundable room and watch fares. Between June and October, keep free cancellation in case a typhoon signal reshapes your plans. UK passport holders can visit for up to six months without a visa.

The FCDO says British visitors can stay up to six months without a visa and that passports must be valid for at least one month after the date you leave. Check the rules for your own passport before you book.

When you compare hotels, look at the final total and the cancellation deadline, and check the walk to the nearest MTR station; our where to stay in Hong Kong guide compares areas, and finding cheap flights from Hong Kong covers onward routes.

So when should you go to Hong Kong?

Link to this answer

Go from mid-October to early December for the best mix of sunshine, dry days and comfortable temperatures, with November the standout month. January and February are a good, cooler second choice. Spring suits art and rugby fans willing to accept humidity, and summer suits flexible, indoor-heavy trips with refundable bookings.

Once your dates are set, plan the getting-around side with getting around Hong Kong and the arrival with HKG to Hong Kong airport transfer; the Airport Express reaches the city in as little as 24 minutes.
