Desk-researched timing guide, checked 16 October 2026; not a personally tested trip. Climate figures are IMGW-PIB 1991–2020 normals for the Kraków-Balice station, not forecasts, and 2027 event dates are included only where organisers had published them.

Best time to visit Kraków, month by month: IMGW 1991–2020 climate normals, Free November at Wawel, 2026 festival dates, holiday closures and winter cold.

When is the best time to visit Kraków?

Link to this answer

September is the best all-round month to visit Kraków: IMGW-PIB normals give a 19.5°C average high and 8.6 days with at least 1 mm of rain, against 11.1 in July. Late May and June suit walkers who accept showers, and November suits culture lovers, with free Wawel exhibitions and several festivals.

Kraków has warm, showery summers and cold, grey winters, so the choice is mostly about which compromise you prefer. The IMGW-PIB 1991–2020 normals for the Kraków synoptic station (12566, at Balice, beside the airport) put July’s average high at 25.3°C and January’s at 1.6°C. The station averages 673 mm of precipitation a year, and May to August is the wettest stretch.

Events matter almost as much as weather. November 2026 brings the fifteenth Free November at Wawel Royal Castle, when selected exhibitions are free, alongside jazz, new-music and film festivals; early July brings the Jewish Culture Festival to Kazimierz. Museums also close on public holidays such as 1 and 11 November and 24–25 December, which can reshape a short break.

We built this page from primary sources checked on 16 October 2026: IMGW-PIB climate normals, Wawel and Museum of Kraków visitor pages, the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial, the city’s official events calendar and the UK FCDO. We have not invented hotel prices; where demand rises, we say so in words. For neighbourhoods, see where to stay in Kraków, and for the wider picture, the Kraków destination guide.

  • Best all-round: September
  • Warmest: July and August, which are also among the wettest months
  • Best for free culture: November, with Free November at Wawel
  • Coldest: January, with snow on the ground for about 18 days on average
  • Verdict: September first, then late May to June

What is the weather like in Kraków month by month?

Link to this answer

Kraków swings from an average January high of 1.6°C to 25.3°C in July, according to IMGW-PIB’s 1991–2020 normals. Rain peaks in summer: July averages 98.2 mm over 11.1 rainy days. Snow lies on the ground for about 18 days in January, and frost is common from November to March.

The table uses IMGW-PIB’s published normals for station 12566: average daily maximum and minimum temperatures, monthly precipitation, days with at least 1 mm and days with snow cover. These are 30-year averages, not forecasts, and individual years swing widely either side of them.

Two patterns stand out. Summer is both the warmest and the wettest season, because rain arrives in heavier bursts: July’s 98.2 mm is three times February’s 32.3 mm, yet it falls on fewer than three extra days. Winter is drier but gloomy, with 16 to 17 cloudy days a month from November to January.

The verdict column is our reading of those numbers for a walking-heavy city break. IMGW-PIB does not publish sunshine hours for the Kraków station, so we use cloudy days as the gloom indicator. Warsaw’s station does: it averages just 33.6 hours of sunshine in December, which gives a fair idea of how short winter days feel in southern Poland too.

Is spring a good time to visit Kraków?

Link to this answer

Late April to early June is a good time to visit Kraków. Average highs climb from 15.1°C in April to 23.2°C in June, Wawel’s Royal Gardens and Viewing Tower opened on 24 April in 2026, and the Auschwitz Memorial extends its entry hours. The catch is rain: May averages 79 mm over about ten rainy days.

March is still a winter month in practice. IMGW-PIB counts 17.6 nights below freezing in an average March, and highs average 8.4°C. April is the turning point, with highs of 15.1°C and frost on about five nights, and it is the driest of the warm months at 46.4 mm.

Spring also reopens the outdoor parts of Wawel. In 2026 the Royal Gardens ran from 24 April to 4 October, and the Viewing Tower and Dragon’s Den from 24 April to 31 October, so a March visit misses them. At the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial, last entry moves from 17:00 in March to 18:00 in April and May, which makes an unhurried day trip easier.

May is lovely but showery: rain jumps to 79 mm, and you get rain on about ten days. Build each day around one indoor anchor, such as the Rynek Underground or the Czartoryski Museum, so a downpour costs you an hour rather than a day. Our Kraków 3-day itinerary pairs every outdoor block with an indoor swap.

What is Kraków like in summer?

Link to this answer

Summer is Kraków’s warmest season. July and August average highs of about 25°C, with four days of 30°C or more in each month, but July is also the wettest month, at 98.2 mm. Book Wawel and Wieliczka tickets ahead, keep afternoons flexible for downpours and start outdoor sightseeing early.

IMGW-PIB records 16.9 days of 25°C or more in an average July and 15.8 in August, and four days a month at 30°C or above. Heat is rarely extreme, but stone streets and top-floor rooms hold it, so ask whether your room has air-conditioning if you book for July or August.

Summer pressure shows up in ticketing. Wawel sells tickets online up to a month ahead, with daily entrance limits, and the Wieliczka Salt Mine says buying online lets you secure a tour at a set hour and skip the wait. Underground, the mine stays at 17–18°C, which feels cool after a hot street, so carry a light layer.

Early July belongs to Kazimierz. The 35th Jewish Culture Festival ran from 1 to 5 July 2026; 2027 dates were not published when we checked, so confirm before booking. The Auschwitz Memorial admits visitors from 7:30 to 19:00 between June and August, so an early slot avoids the midday heat on the open Birkenau site.

Is autumn a good time to visit Kraków?

Link to this answer

September is the sweet spot, and October and November reward culture lovers. Highs fall from 19.5°C in September to 7.6°C in November, but October 2026 brings the Conrad Festival and the International Book Fair, and November brings jazz, new music, silent film and free exhibitions at Wawel.

September keeps summer’s warmth with less rain than July and only 3.7 days of 25°C or more. October cools to a 14.0°C average high with frost on about four nights, and November drops to 7.6°C with 15.9 cloudy days. Pack layers rather than a heavy coat until late October.

The city’s official events calendar lists the Conrad Festival from 19 to 25 October 2026, the International Book Fair from 22 to 25 October, the Zaduszki Jazz Festival from 3 to 7 November, Sacrum Profanum from 6 to 11 November and the Silent Film Festival from 12 to 15 November. Book central rooms early if your dates overlap.

Wawel’s Free November 2026 is the stand-out. Free passes for selected exhibitions are issued at the ticket offices on the day or online a week ahead, the ‘Ecstasies. Bernini at Wawel’ exhibition opens on 6 November, and Vermeer’s Woman with a Pearl Necklace is shown from 27 to 30 November within the free Second Floor pass. The castle is closed on 1 November and only partly open on 11 November.

Should you visit Kraków in winter?

Link to this answer

Visit Kraków in winter only if you enjoy cold, grey days and indoor sightseeing. January averages a 1.6°C high and −4.7°C low, with frost on about 24 nights and snow on the ground for about 18 days. Several museums close on 24–25 December, and the Auschwitz Memorial closes on 25 December and 1 January.

IMGW-PIB counts 23.9 frost nights in January and 23.2 in December, and December averages 17.3 cloudy days. Pavements and the cobbled Rynek can be icy, so bring shoes with grip. The upside is that winter is the driest season, with 33.4 mm in December and 32.3 mm in February.

Holiday closures cluster at the end of the year. The Museum of Kraków lists closures on 24 and 25 December for Schindler’s Factory, the Rynek Underground and the Old Synagogue, which also closes on 31 December. At the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial, December entry ends at 14:00 and January entry at 15:00, so leave Kraków early.

In October and December, Wawel offers free admission on Mondays to selected exhibitions, including the State Rooms on the Second Floor and the Crown Treasury, while the day’s free tickets last. It is a good-value way to fill a cold morning. For more indoor ideas by district, see things to do in Kraków.

Which Kraków events in 2026 and 2027 affect your dates?

Link to this answer

The dated events that matter most are the late-October literary festivals, November’s run of jazz, new music and Free November at Wawel, and the Jewish Culture Festival in early July. Organisers had not published most 2027 dates by 16 October 2026, so treat recurring events as likely but unconfirmed.

We have listed only events whose dates were published by the organiser or on the city’s official events calendar. None of them shuts the city, but festival weeks fill venues and nearby hotels, so book refundable rooms early if your dates overlap and check the venue address before choosing a base.

For 2027, the calendar already lists arena concerts but not the big recurring festivals. The Jewish Culture Festival’s 2026 report gives 1–5 July 2026, so check its site in spring for 2027. Wawel announces each Free November in the autumn; the 2026 edition is the fifteenth.

If an event is the reason for your trip, stay within walking distance of it. Our where to stay in Kraków guide compares areas by tram stop and station, and the Etiuda&Anima festival from 26 to 31 October fills the gap between the October and November festivals.

What closures and safety issues should shape your Kraków dates?

Link to this answer

Check three things before fixing dates: public-holiday closures, weekday closures at the museums you want, and evening safety. Several museums close on 1 and 11 November and 24–25 December, Schindler’s Factory shuts on the first Tuesday of each month, and the FCDO warns of overcharging for drinks paid by card at night.

Weekday patterns catch people out. Schindler’s Factory closes on the first Tuesday of the month and opens only 10:00–15:00 on Mondays, the Rynek Underground closes on the second Monday of the month, and the National Museum’s main branches, including the Czartoryski Museum and the Cloth Hall gallery, close every Monday.

For safety, the FCDO says visitors have been overcharged when paying for drinks at the end of the night by debit or credit card, and advises checking your bill carefully. It also reports drink spiking, says drinking alcohol in public places is illegal, and advises using only official taxis that show a company name, phone number and rate card. Read our guide to bar and restaurant scams abroad before a big night out.

Card terminals may offer to charge you in pounds or euros rather than złoty; choosing złoty avoids a conversion mark-up, as our explainer on dynamic currency conversion shows. If Kraków is one stop on a longer Schengen trip, the FCDO confirms the 90-days-in-180 limit for British visitors; our 90/180-day rule guide shows how to count it.

When should different travellers visit Kraków?

Link to this answer

Sightseers who want comfort should choose September or late May to June. Culture lovers on a budget should look at November, when Wawel’s Free November and several festivals overlap. Heat-averse travellers do best in September or late April to May, and winter suits visitors happy with museums, cellars and early dusk.

The table matches common trip styles to months, using the climate normals and event dates above. If you plan a day in the Tatras, remember that the Kasprowy Wierch cable car closes for its annual inspection from 19 October to 6 November 2026, and that the mountains are far wetter: IMGW-PIB gives Zakopane 191.6 mm of precipitation in July.

For Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Memorial does not recommend visits by children under 14, and entry cards are issued only online. Families with younger children may prefer the Wieliczka Salt Mine, which is open to children of all ages but involves about 800 stairs. Our Auschwitz day-trip guide covers that decision in depth.

So when should you go, and what should you book first?

Link to this answer

Our verdict: go in September, or from late May to June if you can accept showers. Choose November for free Wawel exhibitions and festivals, and avoid late December unless you want a festive break with closures. Book Auschwitz guides first, then a refundable room, then Wawel and Wieliczka tickets.

The Auschwitz Memorial’s guide page says guides should be reserved at least a month before a visit, and its visiting page suggests two months, so that is the booking with the longest lead time. Wawel releases tickets a month in advance, and Wieliczka tours in languages other than Polish and English must be bought online.
