Desk-researched timing guide, checked 16 and 17 October 2026; not a personally tested trip. Weather figures are AEMET’s 1981–2010 averages for Madrid Retiro, not forecasts, and recent summers have run hotter. Event dates are included only where organisers or esMadrid had published them, and some are marked provisional.

When is the best time to visit Madrid?
Link to this answerGo from late April to early June or from mid-September to October. AEMET’s Madrid Retiro averages give May a 22.2°C high and October 19.4°C, against 32.1°C in July. Choose May for San Isidro and spring sunshine, September for the Grand Prix and warm evenings, and avoid July and August if heat bothers you.
Madrid sits on a high plateau, and its weather swings more than coastal Spain’s. AEMET’s 1981–2010 normals for the Retiro station, at 667 metres, run from a January average high of 9.8°C and low of 2.7°C to a July high of 32.1°C, with only 421mm of rain a year (AEMET). The questions are heat, cold nights and which events fill the city, not rain.
Summers are getting harder. AEMET called summer 2026 the warmest in mainland Spain since its series began in 1961, with a mean of 24.5°C, 2.4°C above the 1991–2020 average, and heatwaves from 20 to 27 June, 2 to 24 July and 28 July to 20 August (AEMET). That pushes the comfortable windows towards spring and autumn.
We checked this guide on 16 and 17 October 2026 against AEMET, esMadrid, IFEMA, EMT Madrid, the Formula 1 calendar and the UK Foreign Office. Once you have a month, compare bases in where to stay in Madrid and plan days with the Madrid 3-day itinerary.
What is Madrid’s weather like month by month?
Link to this answerAverage highs climb from 9.8°C in January to 32.1°C in July, then fall back to 10.0°C in December. July and August are almost rainless and very sunny, while April, May, October and November bring the most rain days. Frost is common from December to February, with 6.2 frosty days in January.
All figures are AEMET’s 1981–2010 averages for Madrid Retiro. Rain days count days with at least 1mm; sunshine is the monthly total in hours, and AEMET publishes no October sunshine figure for this station. The last column is our planning note, not official data.
Three patterns stand out. May is the stormiest month, with 2.9 thunderstorm days on average, so spring showers come in bursts. October is the wettest month by volume, with 60mm. And July averages 17.5 clear days, the most of the year, which is why the city feels so exposed in high summer (AEMET).
Winter is crisp rather than grey: December averages 4.6 fog days and January 1.0 snow day, but most winter days are dry and bright. Pack a warm coat from December to February and a hat and water bottle from June to September.

Is spring a good time to visit Madrid?
Link to this answerYes, especially from late April to early June. Highs rise from 18.2°C in April to 28.2°C in June, sunshine passes 230 hours a month, and the city fills with outdoor events: the Madrid Open and marathon in April and San Isidro in May. Expect a few stormy afternoons, mostly in May.
AEMET’s averages show spring at its best in May: a 22.2°C high, 11.3°C low and 268 hours of sunshine, though also 7.3 rain days and 2.9 storm days, the most of any month. Pack a light layer for evenings, which can still feel cool at this altitude.
Sport fills the late-April calendar. The Mutua Madrid Open tennis runs from 19 April to 2 May 2027 on the clay courts at the Caja Mágica (esMadrid), and the Rock ’n’ Roll Madrid marathon takes place on Sunday 25 April 2027, starting on the Paseo de la Castellana at 8.45am and finishing on Paseo de Recoletos between Cibeles and Colón (esMadrid), so expect road closures through the centre that morning.
San Isidro, the city’s patron-saint festival, runs from early May to 16 May 2027, with 15 May the main day. esMadrid describes chulapos and chulapas dancing chotis in the streets, picnics and concerts at the Pradera de San Isidro, concerts in Las Vistillas Gardens and Plaza Mayor, and rosquillas, the festival doughnuts (esMadrid). It is the most Madrileño week of the year to visit.
How hot is Madrid in summer, and is it worth going?
Link to this answerVery hot: July averages a 32.1°C high and August 31.3°C, with nights near 19°C, and summer 2026 brought heatwaves across most of July and August. It works if you plan museums for midday, sightseeing for early morning and late evening, and accept some closures. Pride and the August fiestas add atmosphere.
AEMET’s normals give July 355 hours of sunshine and just 1.7 days with rain. The averages understate recent summers: AEMET’s summary of summer 2026 lists heatwaves on the peninsula from 20 to 27 June, 2 to 24 July and 28 July to 20 August, and another from 2 to 7 September (AEMET). The UK government says extreme weather can affect many parts of Spain in summer and that wildfires happen often (FCDO).
Plan the day around the heat. The Prado opens from 10am to 8pm from Monday to Saturday and to 7pm on Sundays and holidays, and entry is free in the last two hours, from 6pm to 8pm or 5pm to 7pm (esMadrid), which turns the hottest evenings into museum time. Retiro Park, part of the UNESCO-listed Paseo del Prado and Retiro landscape, gives shade between sights (esMadrid).
Summer has its own calendar. esMadrid lists the 2027 Pride celebrations from 30 June to 4 July, marked provisional (esMadrid). In August, three neighbourhood fiestas follow each other: San Cayetano around El Rastro, San Lorenzo in Lavapiés and La Paloma in La Latina, which in 2026 ran from 4 to 16 August with chotis contests, zarzuela and live music (esMadrid).
Is autumn a good time to visit Madrid?
Link to this answerYes, from mid-September to late October. September averages a 26.4°C high and October 19.4°C, ideal for walking, though October is the wettest month with 60mm. The Spanish Grand Prix comes to Madrid on 10–12 September 2027, and early-September heat is no longer rare after the 2026 heatwave.
AEMET’s averages put September at 259 hours of sunshine and 3.3 rain days, with nights cooling to 15.4°C, and October at 6.9 rain days with a 10.7°C low. By November highs drop to 13.5°C, so late October is the last reliably mild window.
The Formula 1 calendar lists the Spanish Grand Prix for 10–12 September 2027 on the Madring circuit. Hotels near IFEMA and the airport feel that weekend first, but expect demand across the city. AEMET also recorded a heatwave from 2 to 7 September 2026 (AEMET), so early September can still feel like summer.
Autumn is also trade-fair season. esMadrid says IFEMA hosts more than 80 fairs a year (esMadrid), so check its calendar before booking a business-heavy week. For indoor plans on wet October days, see Madrid in the rain.
What is Madrid like in winter?
Link to this answerCold, dry and bright. January averages a 9.8°C high, a 2.7°C low and 6.2 frosty days, but only 5.7 days with rain. Christmas lights, New Year at Puerta del Sol and the Three Kings parade on 5 January bring crowds, and FITUR fills hotels near IFEMA from 20 to 24 January 2027.
AEMET’s normals give December 124 hours of sunshine and January 149, and both months average under seven rain days. Fog is the commonest nuisance, with 4.6 fog days in December and 3.5 in January, and snow settles only occasionally, averaging about one day a month in January and February.
The festive season peaks at Puerta del Sol, where huge crowds gather on 31 December for the twelve chimes (esMadrid). On 5 January 2027 the Three Kings parade runs from 6pm from Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz along the Castellana and Recoletos to Plaza de Cibeles (esMadrid). The Prado opens only from 10am to 2pm on 6 January and on 24 and 31 December, and closes on 1 January and 25 December (esMadrid).
January is also when the travel trade arrives: IFEMA lists FITUR for 20–24 January 2027 (IFEMA). Outside that week, January and February are among the quietest times for the city’s museums.
Which Madrid events change prices and crowds?
Link to this answerThe biggest pressure points are FITUR in January, ARCOmadrid in March, the Madrid Open and marathon in late April, San Isidro in May, Pride at the turn of June and July, the Grand Prix in September and New Year at Sol. Book cancellable rooms early for those dates, especially near IFEMA.
Dates come from each organiser or from esMadrid, checked on 16 and 17 October 2026: IFEMA for FITUR, IFEMA for ARCOmadrid, esMadrid for the Madrid Open, the marathon, San Isidro, Pride, the August fiestas and the Three Kings parade, and the Formula 1 calendar. ARCOmadrid is open only to professionals until 3pm on 5 March; the public days run from that afternoon to 7 March (IFEMA).
The effect column is our reading of where demand concentrates, not a measured price change. Trade fairs and the Grand Prix matter most near IFEMA and the airport, while San Isidro, Pride and the August fiestas matter most in the centre, around La Latina, Lavapiés and Chueca.

What can disrupt a Madrid trip, and how do you plan around it?
Link to this answerHeat is the main risk from June to September, with heatwaves now lasting weeks. Wildfires elsewhere in Spain can affect travel in summer, and strikes can disrupt transport. In crowds, the UK government warns of thieves working in teams and fake police asking to see wallets. None of these needs to cancel a trip.
The UK government says thieves in Spain use distraction techniques and often work in teams, and that thieves posing as police may ask to see your wallet; genuine officers ask for ID but not for wallets or purses (FCDO). Puerta del Sol at New Year, El Rastro on Sundays and the metro at rush hour are where to be most careful.
For heat, the practical fixes are simple: book a room with air conditioning, start sightseeing at opening time, use the free evening hours at the Prado (esMadrid) and keep the afternoon for rest. The FCDO advises checking with your transport company about planned strikes before travel (FCDO).
Check transport works too. esMadrid notes that metro line 10 has not run between Nuevos Ministerios and Cuzco since 28 March 2026 because of works, and that line 6 stops at 11pm from Sunday to Thursday for modernisation, with free replacement buses (esMadrid). The Exprés Aeropuerto bus runs 24 hours if your flight lands late (EMT Madrid).
Which month suits your kind of Madrid trip?
Link to this answerFirst-timers should aim for May or late September to October. Art lovers can come any time but should avoid the hottest weeks unless they use the Prado’s free evening hours. Festival-goers should pick San Isidro or the August fiestas, and anyone watching costs should look at quiet weeks in February and November.
The table matches common trip types to the months that serve them best, using AEMET’s normals and the event dates above. Where two windows are listed, the first is our preference. None of these picks is based on room-price data.
Families should weigh school holidays at home against Madrid’s heat; spring and autumn half-terms usually fit well. For family ideas, see Madrid with kids; for day trips that escape the summer heat, see best day trips from Madrid.
| Traveller | Best months | Why | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| First-time city break | May, late September–October | Warm days, cool nights, long light | July and August heat |
| Art and museum lovers | January–March, November | Quiet galleries, free Prado evenings all year | FITUR and ARCO weeks if price matters |
| Festival-goers | May, August | San Isidro and the neighbourhood fiestas | Booking late for San Isidro |
| Sports fans | Late April, September | Madrid Open, marathon, Grand Prix | Assuming quiet hotels on race weekends |
| Budget travellers | February, November | Few big events outside trade fairs | Christmas and New Year week |
| Families | April–May, October | Comfortable temperatures for walking | Heatwave weeks in summer |
So when should you visit Madrid?
Link to this answerGo in May for warm days, long evenings and San Isidro, or from mid-September to October for mild weather after the summer heat. Choose winter for quiet museums and crisp, sunny days, and summer only if you can plan around the heat. Whatever the month, check IFEMA’s calendar before booking a hotel.
If your dates are flexible, the strongest single choice is the second half of May, midweek: AEMET’s averages give a 22.2°C high and 268 hours of sunshine (AEMET), the city is in festival mood after San Isidro, and the summer heatwaves have not yet begun.
Next, choose a base with where to stay in Madrid, plan the days with the Madrid 3-day itinerary or the Madrid 7-day itinerary, and see Madrid airport to the city for arrival. The Madrid destination guide and Madrid hotels collect the rest.
