Key takeaways

When is the best time to visit Milan?

Link to this answer

For most visitors the best time to visit Milan is mid-May to mid-June or the first three weeks of September. Average highs sit between 22°C and 26°C, the city is green and long evenings suit aperitivo. Steer around fashion weeks and the Salone del Mobile unless you are going for them.

Milan sits on the Po Valley plain, and ARPA Lombardia, the regional environment agency, describes a climate with a marked continental streak: the Alps block Atlantic winds, so winters are cold and summers very hot, while the Mediterranean keeps the air humid all year (ARPA Lombardia). In practice that means near-freezing winter nights and sticky July afternoons, with the comfortable weeks in between.

Weather is only half the timing question. Milan’s calendar is built around trade fairs and fashion: the Salone del Mobile alone drew 316,342 visitors from 167 countries in 2026, according to its organiser (Salone del Mobile). Check the event table below alongside the weather before you fix dates.

Once you have a month, pick a base with where to stay in Milan, plan the days with the Milan 3-day itinerary and browse things to do in Milan. The Milan destination guide and Milan hotels pages cover the wider picture.

  • Best overall: mid-May to mid-June and 1–20 September
  • Hottest: July, with a 29.2°C average high at Linate
  • Wettest: October, with 122mm of rain on average
  • Busiest weeks: fashion weeks, Salone del Mobile (13–18 April 2027) and Grand Prix weekend at Monza

What is Milan’s weather like month by month?

Link to this answer

Air Force normals for Milano Linate run from a 5.9°C average high and −0.9°C low in January to 29.2°C and 18.0°C in July. Rain is spread through the year, roughly 920mm in all, but October is wettest at 122mm and February driest at 49mm, with about five rain days.

The table uses the Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare) normals for 1971–2000 as published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which match the Air Force’s own climate atlas sheet for Milano Linate, the city airport station at 107 metres (Aeronautica Militare atlas, archived). Rain days are the WMO’s monthly counts; sunshine is not published for this station.

Treat the summer columns as a floor, not a ceiling. The Air Force’s own review found that summer 2026 was the hottest in its records since 1961, with northern Italy running 2.9°C above the 1991–2020 average (Aeronautica Militare). ARPA Lombardia puts the average annual temperature of the Lombard plain at about 14°C for 1991–2020, and notes that Milan has a weather series reaching back to 1763 (ARPA Lombardia).

Two patterns stand out. Spring and autumn are the wet seasons, with May averaging 8.9 rain days and October 8.3, while July has the fewest at 5.4, though its rain often arrives as heavy thunderstorms. And winter nights hover around freezing from December to February, so pack a proper coat even when the forecast looks mild by day.

Is spring a good time to visit Milan?

Link to this answer

Spring is pleasant but unsettled. Highs climb from 14.3°C in March to 22.3°C in May, yet May is also the rainiest month by days, at 8.9. The bigger factor is design week: Fuorisalone fills the city from 12 to 18 April 2027, around the Salone del Mobile at Fiera Milano Rho.

The Salone del Mobile runs from 13 to 18 April 2027 at Fiera Milano in Rho (Salone del Mobile), and Fuorisalone, the programme of design events spread through the city’s districts, runs from 12 to 18 April 2027 under the theme “Design In Relation” (Fuorisalone). Design fans should book that week early; everyone else should treat it as the one spring week to avoid.

Outside design week, April and May are good museum months before the summer heat. The Pinacoteca di Brera opens from Tuesday to Sunday, 8.30am to 7.15pm, with last entry at 6pm, and closes on Mondays, 1 May, 25 December and 1 January (Pinacoteca di Brera). Its Grande Brera ticket costs €20 and also covers Palazzo Citterio on the same day and the following six days (Brera tickets).

Late May and early June are the sweet spot: warmer than April, with evenings long enough for a walk to the canals after dinner. Pack a light waterproof anyway, because May averages 96mm of rain over 8.9 days at Linate, more rain days than any other month (WMO).

How hot is Milan in summer, and is July or August worth it?

Link to this answer

Milan’s summers are hot and humid: July averages a 29.2°C high and August 28.5°C, and the Air Force recorded 2026 as northern Italy’s hottest summer since 1961. Come early in June if you can. In July and August, plan indoor sights for the afternoon and expect thunderstorms rather than steady rain.

The Air Force’s 2026 summary is the clearest warning: northern Italy ran 2.9°C above its 1991–2020 average, beating 2003, and nationally July and August 2026 were the hottest since records began in 1961 (Aeronautica Militare). Average lows of 18°C in July mean nights stay warm, so air conditioning matters more than a view when you book.

Summer rain is lumpy rather than steady. July averages only 5.4 rain days but 67mm, and August 7.1 days and 89mm, which points to short, heavy storms (WMO). Build the day so that the Last Supper or Brera, both open into the early evening, cover the hottest hours: the Cenacolo admits visitors from 8.15am to 7pm, Tuesday to Sunday (Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano).

June has one fixed date to check: men’s fashion week runs from 18 to 22 June 2027 (Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana). Families tied to school holidays should plan around the heat in July and August and keep a rainy-day list from Milan in the rain.

What is Milan like in autumn?

Link to this answer

September is the best autumn month, with a 24.4°C average high, but it carries the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on 3–5 September 2027 and women’s fashion week on 21–27 September. October is Milan’s wettest month at 122mm, and November turns cool and damp, with highs of about 11°C.

The Formula 1 calendar lists the Italian Grand Prix at Monza for 3–5 September 2027, and the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana lists women’s fashion week for 21–27 September 2027, after the 22–28 September 2026 edition. Both raise demand for rooms, so the safest September window for a leisure trip is 1 to 20 September, avoiding the race weekend.

October brings the heaviest rain of the year, 122mm over 8.3 days on average, and November drops to a 10.7°C high and 3.7°C low (WMO). That suits museums and long lunches more than rooftop terraces. Motorcycle fans should note EICMA, which holds trade days on 3–4 November and opens to the public from 5 to 8 November 2026 at Rho Fiera (EICMA).

Autumn is also when the Last Supper’s quarterly ticket batches matter most for winter trips: the museum opens reservations for November, December and January in September, according to its booking schedule (Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano). Check that schedule as soon as your dates are firm.

Is Milan worth visiting in winter?

Link to this answer

Yes, for museums, galleries and shopping, if you dress for the cold. January averages a 5.9°C high and lows just below freezing, but February is the driest month at 49mm. Winter also holds two fashion weeks: men’s on 15–19 January and women’s from 23 February to 1 March 2027.

December to February nights average between −0.9°C and 0.3°C at Linate, and highs stay between 5.9°C and 9.0°C (WMO). Rain is modest, with five to seven rain days a month, so most winter days are dry, if often grey. Short days push sightseeing indoors by late afternoon.

The fashion weeks are the dates to check: Camera Moda lists men’s shows from 15 to 19 January 2027 and women’s from 23 February to 1 March 2027. Outside those weeks, late January and early February carry none of the big fairs or fashion dates in the event table below, which makes them the simplest winter window to plan.

Watch the holiday closures. The Last Supper is shut on Mondays, 1 January and 25 December (Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano); Brera closes on Mondays, 1 January, 1 May and 25 December (Pinacoteca di Brera); and the Duomo Museum closes every Wednesday (Duomo di Milano). The Duomo Museum is also free to everyone on the last Sunday of each month.

Which Milan events in 2026–27 affect prices and crowds?

Link to this answer

The weeks that move Milan’s hotel demand are trade and fashion events rather than festivals: EICMA in November, men’s fashion week on 15–19 January 2027, women’s on 23 February to 1 March, design week in mid-April, men’s again on 18–22 June, then the Monza Grand Prix and women’s fashion week in September.

Dates come from the organisers, checked on 16 October 2026: Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana for the fashion weeks, Salone del Mobile and Fuorisalone for design week, EICMA for the motorcycle show and the Formula 1 calendar for Monza. We do not quote hotel prices; compare totals for your dates, including the tourist tax.

Fiera Milano in Rho hosts the Salone and EICMA, and the metro’s M1 line ends at Rho Fieramilano, where holders of an urban pass need a €1.70 supplement (ATM). If your trip overlaps a fair, a central base still works, but expect busier trains and restaurants.

How do Last Supper ticket releases affect when you should go?

Link to this answer

They often decide the trip. Leonardo’s Last Supper admits up to 40 people for 15 minutes at a time, tickets are named and non-refundable, and reservations open in quarterly batches, with extra tickets released every Wednesday at noon for the following week. Fix your Milan dates early enough to catch the right batch.

The museum’s booking schedule opens reservations in September for November to January, in December for February to April, in March for May to July and in June for August to October; the September to December 2026 slots went on sale on 23 June (Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano). Online buyers are limited to five tickets, and the museum caps each person at five tickets per calendar year.

A full ticket costs €15, visitors aged 18 to 25 pay €2 and under-18s go free, but everyone, including infants, needs a reservation. Tickets cannot be changed or refunded, and must be collected at the ticket office beside the entrance at least 30 minutes before the slot, or admission is lost (Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano).

The museum closes on Mondays, so arriving on a Monday loses you nothing here. Free first-Sunday tickets are released online at noon on the previous Wednesday. If your dates are fixed and the batch has sold out, a guided tour that includes entry is the realistic fallback; see the Milan 3-day itinerary for how to build a day around the slot.

What should you budget for, and which risks should you plan around?

Add Milan’s tourist tax: since 1 April 2026 it has been €12 a night in five-star hotels, €10 in four-star, €7 in three-star, €4 in two-star and €3 in one-star, according to Il Giorno. The Malpensa Express costs €15, and an ATM ticket €2.20 for 90 minutes.

The tax rates were reported by Il Giorno on 13 February 2026 after the city council revised them; the paper notes that the five-star rise from €10 to €12 is not meant to be permanent. We could not open the Comune di Milano page to confirm the rules for apartments and B&Bs, so check the tax line in your booking total.

From Malpensa, the Malpensa Express reaches Terminal 1 from Milano Cadorna in about 37 minutes, with trains every 30 minutes, or from Milano Centrale in about 51 minutes via Porta Garibaldi (Malpensa Express); fares are €15 for adults and €7.50 for children aged 4 to 13 (fares). In town, ATM’s urban ticket costs €2.20 for 90 minutes and a 24-hour ticket €7.60; contactless cards switch to the daily fare after four journeys, and metro line M4 links the centre with Linate (ATM).

On safety, the UK government flags bag-snatching and pickpocketing in city centres and at major sights, especially at main train and metro stations, and warns that transport strikes are often called at short notice; drivers should know there is a congestion charge for central Milan (FCDO). Which month suits which kind of Milan trip, and what is the verdict?

Link to this answer

Art and food trips suit mid-May to mid-June or early September. Travellers avoiding big events should target late January or early February, and accept cold, grey days. Design fans need mid-April, fashion insiders January, February, June or September. Our verdict: early June, when evenings are long and the summer heat has not yet built.

Families tied to UK school holidays face the hottest weeks in July and August; plan early starts, air-conditioned museums and late walks. Photographers get the longest evenings in June, and February is the driest winter month for city walks. First-timers should anchor everything to a Last Supper slot, then fill the days around it with the Milan 3-day itinerary or, with more time, the Milan 7-day itinerary.

If you only have one day between trains, Milan in one day works in any month, and families can use Milan with kids. Arriving from Venice or Rome by rail? See Milan to Venice by train or plane.

  • Best overall: mid-May to mid-June, and 1–20 September outside the Monza weekend
  • Fewest big events: late January and early February, between the fashion weeks
  • Design week: Fuorisalone 12–18 April, Salone 13–18 April 2027
  • Hottest and stormiest: July and August
  • Wettest: October
