When is the best time to visit Samarkand?
Link to this answerMid-September to October is the best time to visit Samarkand: WMO 1991–2020 normals give September a 28.7°C average high with almost no rain, and October a milder 22.0°C. April and May are greener but wetter. July averages 34.5°C, so summer visits depend on the late opening hours at the main monuments.
Samarkand sits at 725 metres in a dry continental climate. The WMO 1991–2020 normals for Samarkand station record 377.6 mm of precipitation a year, almost all of it between November and May, and 2,845.7 hours of sunshine. From June to September the city receives less than 13 mm in total, while March, the wettest month, averages 73.2 mm.
Uzbekistan’s official tourism portal describes chillya, the local name for two 40-day extremes: summer heat from after 20 June to early August, and winter cold from mid-December to almost the end of January. Those two windows are the hardest for long days on foot between Registan, Gur-e-Amir and Shah-i-Zinda.
This page draws on climate data, official tourism pages, the Registan Ensemble directorate and the UK FCDO, all checked on 16 October 2026. Hotel prices are not quoted because they change daily; where demand rises, the text says why.
- Best overall: mid-September to October
- Second best: late April and May, with some showers
- Hottest: late June to early August (summer chillya)
- Coldest: mid-December to late January (winter chillya)
- Verdict: autumn for comfort; spring for Navruz and greenery
What is Samarkand’s weather like month by month?
Link to this answerSamarkand’s 1991–2020 averages run from a 7.4°C high and −1.3°C low in January to 34.5°C and 19.6°C in July. March is the wettest month at 73.2 mm, while July and August average just 1.6 mm each. Sunshine climbs from about 119 hours in January to 373 hours in July.
The table uses the World Meteorological Organization’s 1991–2020 normals for Samarkand station, published in NOAA’s archive of the official dataset. Sunshine is the monthly total in hours. Rain days are the count of days with at least 1 mm as listed in the WMO sheet, which gives whole numbers for this station.
The big swing is between day and night. In May the average high is 27.1°C but the low is 14.2°C; in October it is 22.0°C by day and 7.8°C at night. Pack a warm layer for evenings in spring and autumn, especially if you plan to stay out at Registan after dark.
Winter nights hover around freezing, with January’s mean low at −1.3°C and December’s and February’s at −0.1°C, and rain or snow falls on 12 to 14 days a month from December to February in the WMO count.

Is spring (March to May) a good time to visit Samarkand?
Link to this answerSpring is pleasant but changeable. Highs rise from 15.3°C in March to 27.1°C in May, yet March and April are the two wettest months, with 73.2 mm and 62.9 mm. Navruz on 21 March is a national holiday and a lively time to visit; late April and May bring the most comfortable spring days.
Navruz, the spring new year, appears on Uzbekistan’s public-holiday list for 21 March on the official tourism portal, which also recommends spring for the country’s ethnic festivals. Book trains and rooms early around the holiday, as the portal’s safety and travel page advises for peak tourist seasons.
Rain is the trade-off. The WMO normals list 15 rain days in March and 13 in April, so build an indoor fallback into each day: Gur-e-Amir, the Afrasiyab Museum and the Ulugh Beg observatory museum all work in a shower. By May, rain falls on 11 days and the monthly sunshine total nears 300 hours.
If Ramadan or Eid al-Fitr falls in your dates, check opening hours locally; Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are public holidays whose dates vary each year, according to the tourism portal. Our Ramadan travel planning guide covers how the month affects a trip.
Can you visit Samarkand in summer (June to August)?
Link to this answerYes, if you plan around the heat. July averages a 34.5°C high and 373 hours of sunshine, and the summer chillya runs from after 20 June to early August. The monuments now stay open late, with Registan open until midnight, so sightsee early and after sunset and rest in the middle of the day.
On 9 September 2026 the Registan Ensemble directorate reported extended evening hours under Samarkand’s “24/7 tourism” plan: the Afrasiyab Museum, the Amir Temur mausoleum (Gur-e-Amir), the Bibi-Khanym complex and the Ulugh Beg observatory museum complex open until 23:00, Registan until midnight, and a music show runs on Registan Square every day at 21:00. Siab Bazaar now trades until midnight.
Those late hours change summer planning. Do the bazaar and outdoor walks early, spend the hottest hours indoors, and save Registan, Gur-e-Amir and Bibi-Khanym for the evening. The directorate’s November 2025 notice gives Registan’s opening time as 08:00, so early risers can still beat the heat.
Heat aside, summer is dry: June to August average about 10 mm of rain in total. Carry water, a hat and sunscreen, as the tourism portal’s chillya advice also suggests, and choose a room with reliable air conditioning; where to stay in Samarkand compares the areas.
Why is autumn the best time to visit Samarkand?
Link to this answerAutumn combines warm, dry days with cooler nights. September averages a 28.7°C high, 13.5°C low and just 2.7 mm of rain; October is 22.0°C by day with about 243 hours of sunshine. Independence Day on 1 September is a public holiday. By November highs fall to 14.5°C and rain returns.
For photographers and walkers this is the sweet spot: the WMO normals give September only 2 rain days and October 6, and comfortable afternoons make it realistic to walk from Registan to Bibi-Khanym, Siab Bazaar and Shah-i-Zinda in one go.
Big concerts also use Registan Square at this time of year. The directorate reported that pianist Lang Lang performed there with the National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan on 6 September 2026. Check the directorate’s news before you go, because a major event can change your evening plan for the square.
Sharq Taronalari, the international music festival held in Samarkand every two years since 1997, is the other major cultural fixture (Registan directorate); its 13th edition opened on 26 August 2024 (Registan directorate). Dates for the next edition had not been published on the directorate’s pages when we checked, so confirm before building a trip around it.

Is Samarkand worth visiting in winter (December to February)?
Link to this answerWinter suits travellers who dislike crowds and heat and do not mind cold. January averages 7.4°C by day and −1.3°C at night, with about 119 hours of sunshine. The winter chillya runs from mid-December to late January. Pack warm layers, plan indoor breaks and expect some wet or snowy days.
The tourism portal says Samarkand’s winters are usually mild, with temperatures not often falling below 0°C and cold snaps mostly at night. The WMO normals agree that days are usually above freezing but show average lows at or just below 0°C from December to February, with 12 to 14 days of precipitation a month.
New Year (1 January) and Constitution Day (8 December) are public holidays, according to the official list. The extended evening hours reported in September 2026 make short winter days less limiting, because Registan stays open well after dark.
Winter is also a good time to combine Samarkand with Bukhara or Tashkent by Afrosiyob high-speed train, which the tourism portal says links the main cities; where to stay in Samarkand covers the station area.
Which holidays and events affect a Samarkand trip in 2026 and 2027?
Link to this answerThe fixed dates to know are Navruz on 21 March, Independence Day on 1 September, New Year and Constitution Day on 8 December, plus Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, which move each year. Sharq Taronalari is biennial, and large concerts on Registan, such as Lang Lang in September 2026, can reshape an evening.
Holiday dates come from the official tourism portal’s list, which also includes 14 January (National Defenders Day), 8 March (International Women’s Day), 9 May (Day of Remembrance and Honours) and 1 October (Teacher and Mentor Day). The religious holidays follow the lunar calendar, so check the year’s dates before booking.
Event information comes from the Registan Ensemble directorate, which manages the square and posts schedule changes and concerts. Its November 2025 notice set hours of 08:00 to 22:00 and suspended the sound-and-light and 3D laser shows for equipment repairs, before the September 2026 update extended hours to midnight with a daily 21:00 music show.

What city-specific risks should you plan around in Samarkand?
Link to this answerHeat is the biggest everyday risk from late June to early August. Beyond that, the FCDO says pickpocketing and bag-snatching are common in bazaars, unlicensed taxis are common, you must carry your passport, and you must be registered within three days of arrival, which hotels usually handle. Uzbekistan is also an active seismic zone.
The FCDO’s safety page warns that pickpocketing and bag-snatching are common in crowded places such as bazaars and on public transport, recommends licensed or app-booked taxis, notes that many taxis lack rear seatbelts, and says you must carry your passport at all times. It also says photography of government buildings, airports, police stations and metro stations can cause problems.
Under the FCDO’s entry rules, UK visitors can stay up to 30 days visa-free with a passport valid for at least three months after arrival, and must register within three days; hotels usually do it for you, and you must re-register if you stay more than three days in another city. Codeine, common in UK medicines, can cause problems, so check the restricted list before packing.
Same-sex relationships are illegal in Uzbekistan, according to the FCDO, which advises LGBT+ travellers to avoid public displays of affection. At monuments that are also religious sites, the tourism portal advises women to cover shoulders, back and legs.
Which month suits which kind of traveller?
Link to this answerPhotographers and walkers should aim for late September or October, festival fans for Navruz in March, and heat-averse travellers should avoid late June to mid-August. Winter suits budget-minded travellers happy with cold evenings, and families do best in May or September, when days are warm but not extreme.
These suggestions follow the climate table and the holiday list above. If you can only travel in summer, the late opening hours reported by the Registan directorate make an evening-led plan realistic; if you can only travel in winter, keep the Afrasiyab Museum and Gur-e-Amir for the coldest afternoons.
Whatever the season, plan Samarkand as part of a route: the Samarkand 7-day itinerary adds Shakhrisabz, which the tourism portal puts 80 km from the city.
| Traveller | Best months | Why | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| First-time sightseer | Mid-September to October | Warm, dry, comfortable walking | Cool evenings by late October |
| Photographer | October; late April | Clear skies, softer light | April showers (13 rain days) |
| Festival-goer | March (Navruz) | Spring new year on 21 March | Wettest month; book early |
| Summer traveller | July–August | Late opening hours at the main sites | 34.5°C average high in July |
| Winter traveller | December–February | Quiet monuments, lit evenings | Lows around 0°C; 12–14 wet days a month |
| Family | May; September | Warm days, cooler nights | Afternoon heat by late May |
So when should you book a trip to Samarkand?
Link to this answerBook for mid-September to the end of October if you can: dry, warm days and cool evenings make the monuments easy to enjoy. Choose late April or May for spring greenery, March for Navruz, and winter for quiet sights. Avoid late June to mid-August unless you plan everything around early mornings and late evenings.
Next, choose a base: where to stay in Samarkand compares the Registan area, the old city around Bibi-Khanym and Siab Bazaar, the 19th-century quarter and Silk Road Samarkand, and Samarkand hotels lists properties. Then plan the days with the Samarkand 3-day itinerary.

- Are monuments open in the evening? Yes; in September 2026 the directorate reported hours to 23:00 at four major sites and midnight at Registan.
