When is the best time to visit Santiago, Chile?

Link to this answer

The best time to visit Santiago is October to November or March to April, when average highs sit between 23°C and 28°C and rain is rare. Summer is dry but hot, peaking at 30.4°C in January. Winter brings most of the year’s rain, cold nights near 4°C, smog alerts and Andes skiing.

Santiago’s year splits into a long, dry, sunny half and a short, wetter winter. The WMO 1991–2020 normals for Quinta Normal, station 85577 at 520 metres, submitted by the Dirección Meteorológica de Chile, record 286.2 mm of rain a year over just 23.9 days of at least 1 mm, and 2,597 hours of sunshine. May to August brings 217.5 mm of that rain, about three quarters of the total.

Spring and autumn win because they avoid both extremes: comfortable afternoons, cool mornings, very little rain and long sunny days. They also miss the January and February heat, the winter smog season and the Fiestas Patrias closures in mid-September, while keeping every day trip, from Valparaíso to the wine valleys, easy to plan.

We built this guide on 16 October 2026 from the WMO normals, venue and holiday calendars, event organisers, Chilean news reporting on air quality and the UK FCDO. Once you have dates, plan the days with the Santiago 3-day itinerary or the 7-day itinerary, and choose a base with where to stay in Santiago.

  • Best overall: October–November and March–April
  • Sunniest: December and January, with about 325–329 hours of sunshine each
  • Wettest: June, averaging 80.4 mm over 5.2 rain days
  • Coldest nights: July, averaging 3.8°C
  • Key 2027 dates: Lollapalooza 12–14 March, Santiago Marathon 16 May, Fiestas Patrias 17–19 September

What is Santiago’s weather like month by month?

Link to this answer

Average highs run from 30.4°C in January to 15.7°C in July, and lows from 13.6°C to 3.8°C, so the daily swing is wide all year. Rain is almost absent from November to March, under 5 mm a month, then rises to 80.4 mm in June. Sunshine drops from 329 hours in January to 111 in June.

Figures are the 1991–2020 WMO normals for Quinta Normal, the Dirección Meteorológica de Chile’s station in central Santiago, as archived by NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information. A rain day here means 1 mm or more. The daily mean column is the station’s own average temperature, a better guide to how a whole day feels than the high alone.

The day-night swing is the detail most visitors miss. January averages a 16.8°C gap between high and low, and even July has nearly 12°C, so a sunny winter afternoon in the mid-teens can turn into a near-freezing night. Pack layers in every season and a warm jacket from May to September.

The verdict column is our planning view, combining these averages with the event and holiday calendar further down; it is not a forecast.

What is each season like in Santiago?

Link to this answer

Spring (September to November) warms quickly from 20°C to 27°C highs with little rain. Summer (December to February) is hot, dry and sunny. Autumn (March to May) cools from 28°C to 19°C. Winter (June to August) is mild by day, cold at night, wetter and smoggier, but it brings snow to nearby ski resorts.

Spring is the season to aim for. September’s 20.1°C average high climbs to 26.6°C by November (WMO normals), rain fades from 25.3 mm to under 5 mm, and sunshine rises to 278 hours in November. The catches are September’s Fiestas Patrias, when several museums close, and late-season storms in the eastern foothills, such as the red alert the FCDO reported on 9 October 2026.

Autumn mirrors spring. March is still warm at 27.9°C and almost rainless, April cools to 23.3°C with the first real rain, and May drops to 19.2°C as the smog-episode season begins. Summer suits travellers who like heat and long evenings, and winter suits skiers and museum-led trips, with the coast and wine valleys still within reach on dry days.

Is summer (December to February) a good time to visit Santiago?

Link to this answer

Yes, if you handle heat well. January averages a 30.4°C high and 328.6 hours of sunshine, with almost no rain, and Santiago a Mil fills the city with theatre every January. Plan hills and walks early, museums at midday, and use the longer summer hours at Neruda’s houses and the Museo de la Memoria.

Santiago a Mil, the international performing arts festival run by the Teatro a Mil Foundation, has been held every January since 1994, with theatre, dance, music and circus from Chile and about 25 other countries. Its 2027 dates had not been announced when we checked, so watch the organiser’s site before fixing flights. The 2026 school year began on 2 March (Meganoticias), which makes January and February the long summer break.

Summer stretches some opening hours. Neruda’s La Chascona and his other houses stay open until 19:00 in January and February, the Museo de la Memoria closes at 19:30 from 3 January to 26 February, and Cerro Santa Lucía keeps its summer closing time of 20:30. The Parque Metropolitano on Cerro San Cristóbal opens daily from 06:00, so an early climb beats the heat.

Dry weather also makes day trips easy to plan. Valparaíso is almost two hours away by bus (Chile Travel), and the Maipo wineries and the coast are within a day’s reach. Carry water and sun protection on every outdoor day, and see the Santiago 7-day itinerary for a week that includes them.

What should you expect in winter (June to August)?

Link to this answer

Expect cool, often grey days around 16°C to 18°C, cold nights near 4°C and most of the year’s rain, with June the wettest at 80.4 mm. From 1 May to 31 August the authorities manage smog episodes, and the Andes resorts offer skiing; in 2026, a big snow year, Valle Nevado planned to stay open until 8 November.

Santiago’s air-quality plan runs a critical-episode season, the Gestión de Episodios Críticos, from 1 May to 31 August, when the authorities can declare alerts and pre-emergencies for fine particles. Emol reported that the 2026 season logged 21 critical episodes for fine particulate matter and 282 hours in episode, which the environment ministry ranked the third-lowest total since the first decontamination plan began in 1997.

For visitors, the practical response is to keep viewpoints such as Sky Costanera and Cerro San Cristóbal for the clearest mornings and to ease off strenuous exercise on alert days. Rain is the other winter variable: on 9 October 2026 the FCDO reported a SENAPRED red alert for heavy rain and severe mudslides across eastern Santiago, from San José de Maipo and Pirque to Las Condes and Vitacura, and advised following local evacuation orders.

Winter is ski season. On 16 October 2026 Valle Nevado’s mountain report showed 33 of 45 runs and 10 of 13 lifts open, with 707 cm of snow recorded for the season, and Chile Travel said the resort would keep its slopes open until 8 November, a first in its 38 years. Book transfers or tours rather than driving mountain roads without snow experience.

Which Santiago events and holidays matter in 2026 and 2027?

Link to this answer

The big dates are Santiago a Mil every January, Lollapalooza Chile at Parque O’Higgins on 12–14 March 2027, the Easter holidays on 26–27 March 2027, the Santiago Marathon on 16 May 2027 and Fiestas Patrias on 17–19 September 2027. The 2026 calendar still has holidays on 31 October, 1 November, 8 December and Christmas Day.

Chile Travel lists the 15th Lollapalooza Chile for 12–14 March 2027 at Parque O’Higgins, with general day passes from CLP 164,700, and BioBioChile reported in March 2026 that the organisers had confirmed the park as the venue. The Santiago Marathon is listed for Sunday 16 May 2027, with 10K, 21K and 42K distances. Both bring road closures and busy hotels near their routes, so check the venue or course before booking.

feriados.cl lists the 2027 public holidays, including Good Friday and Holy Saturday on 26 and 27 March, 1 May, 21 May, 21 and 28 June, 16 July, 15 August, Fiestas Patrias from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 September, 11 October, 31 October, 1 November, 8 December and Christmas Day. Three state venues, the Bellas Artes museum, the Centro Cultural La Moneda and the natural history museum, shut on New Year’s Day, 1 May, 18 and 19 September and Christmas Day.

The FCDO adds three dates when nationwide protests often happen: 29 March, the Day of the Young Combatant; 1 May; and 11 September, the anniversary of the military coup. It says violent protests are a risk in Santiago, especially on Friday afternoons and evenings, so avoid demonstrations and check local news on those days.

How do school holidays and weekly closures affect a visit?

Link to this answer

Summer holidays run through January and February, before the school year starts in early March, and in 2026 the Santiago region’s winter break ran from 22 June to 3 July. Whatever the month, avoid building a day around museums on a Monday, when the Precolombino, La Chascona and the natural history museum close.

Meganoticias reported that schools in the Región Metropolitana broke for winter from Monday 22 June to Friday 3 July 2026 and returned on 6 July, after a school year that began on 2 March; no 2027 calendar had appeared by mid-October 2026. If you are travelling with children, those weeks are when Chilean families have free time too, so book popular activities ahead.

Weekly closures matter more than any season. The Precolombino, La Chascona, the natural history museum and the Museo de la Memoria close on Mondays, and the Bellas Artes museum opens Tuesday to Sunday. Sky Costanera opens daily from 10:00 to 22:00, and Cerro Santa Lucía opens from noon on Mondays, so both make good Monday plans in any season.

Holiday weekends are when Chileans travel too, so book intercity buses and winery visits ahead if your dates touch one. Concha y Toro says it normally operates on most public holidays and recommends booking in advance, especially at weekends.

Which risks should shape your Santiago dates?

Link to this answer

Earthquakes can happen at any time, and the FCDO notes that Chile often has severe, fast-spreading forest fires. Winter adds rain alerts and smog episodes, while summer brings strong heat and sun. Crime is the everyday risk: the FCDO says pickpocketing and mugging are very common, and violent protests can flare on Friday afternoons.

The FCDO’s safety page says major earthquakes are a risk in Chile, that new buildings must account for seismic risk, and that you should note the emergency instructions in your hotel room. It also warns that Chile often has severe forest fires that spread rapidly and have closed national parks and roads, and asks travellers to follow evacuation orders and carry ID.

Seasonal hazards follow the climate. Storms brought the October 2026 red alert for eastern Santiago (FCDO), and from June to September winter weather can temporarily close the Los Libertadores pass between Santiago and Mendoza, which matters if you plan to cross the Andes by road (FCDO). In summer, January’s 30.4°C average high and 328.6 hours of sunshine make sun protection essential.

Everyday crime is the more likely problem in any season. The FCDO reports frequent muggings in Santiago and Valparaíso, increasingly with weapons, drink spiking in the Suecia and Bellavista areas and fake taxi drivers at the airport, and advises pre-paying for official taxis at the two booths in arrivals or using ride-hailing apps. Chile lets British visitors in without a visa for up to 90 days, according to the FCDO.

Which month suits your kind of Santiago trip?

Link to this answer

Choose October or November for walking, hills and day trips, March or April for warm, settled weather and Lollapalooza, January for Santiago a Mil, and the winter months for skiing. Museum-led travellers can go in any month, while anyone sensitive to air pollution should avoid the smog-episode season from May to August.

First-time visitors who want to combine the city with Valparaíso, a winery and the mountains get the most from spring or autumn, when every day trip is dry and comfortable. If your Chile trip continues south, check the best time to visit Patagonia first, because the far south has its own season and may set your Santiago dates.

Skiers should watch snowfall rather than the calendar: in heavy 2026, Chile Travel reported Valle Nevado’s extension to 8 November. Theatre lovers should follow the Santiago a Mil announcements for January, and runners should note the 16 May 2027 marathon.

So when should you book a trip to Santiago?

Link to this answer

Book October to November for the best balance of warm, dry, sunny days and cleaner air, or March to April for the same comfort with a festival option. Choose January only if you enjoy heat or Santiago a Mil, and winter mainly for skiing. Always check holiday dates and the latest FCDO alerts before paying.

The normals make a simple case. From October to April the city averages under 18 mm of rain a month, and only October, November, March and April combine that dryness with highs below 28°C. Winter’s cold nights, smog-episode season and rain alerts make it the weakest choice for a sightseeing trip.

From the airport, Centropuerto buses run to República and Pajaritos every 15 minutes for CLP 2,400, and a Metro ride costs CLP 735 to 895 depending on the time band (Red Movilidad). Compare stays on the Santiago hotel comparison, read the Santiago destination guide, and use things to do in Santiago to fill the days.
