Key takeaways

When is the best time to visit Tunis?

Link to this answer

Go in May or from late September to October. Tunis-Carthage then averages highs of about 26°C to 30°C with few rain days, and the tourist office still sells autumn as swimming season. April suits sightseeing without beach plans; July and August peak near 34°C, and December is the wettest month.

Tunis is a sea-level capital wrapped around a lake, with the medina and the Bardo inland and Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and La Marsa along the coast. That mix means two kinds of trip compete for the same calendar: a sightseeing break that wants mild, dry days for Roman ruins, and a coastal stay that wants heat. The national tourist office sums up the pattern as a Mediterranean climate with dry, hot summers and cool, wet winters.

The numbers on this page are the WMO 1991–2020 climate normals for the Tunis-Carthage airport station (WMO 60715, 3 metres above sea level), archived by NOAA NCEI (WMO normals). They describe the usual pattern over 30 years, not the weather for your week.

Below you will find the month-by-month table, what each season is good and bad for, the 2026 festival calendar with its effect on bookings, Ramadan, the FCDO’s current advice and a verdict by traveller type. Pair it with where to stay in Tunis and the Tunis 3-day itinerary once you have dates.

What is the weather in Tunis month by month?

Average highs rise from 16.4°C in January to 34.5°C in August, and average lows from about 8°C to 23°C. Rain falls mostly between September and May, peaking at 68.1 mm in December, while July averages 4.4 mm and half a rain day. May, June, late September and October combine warmth with few wet days.

Figures are the WMO 1991–2020 normals for Tunis-Carthage (NOAA NCEI archive). Rain days count days with at least 1 mm of rain. The verdict column folds in the events and opening-hour changes covered further down.

Two quirks stand out. September is still hot, at a 30.5°C average high, but it is also when the autumn rain returns, with 58.2 mm over about five days, so each wet day tends to bring more rain than a winter one. And the coldest months are mild by northern European standards: lows stay above 8°C, so winter is about wet days rather than frost.

Is spring a good time to visit Tunis?

Link to this answer

Yes, especially from April. Highs climb from 19.4°C in March to 26.5°C in May while rain days fall from about six to under four, which suits Carthage’s open sites and day trips to Dougga. The tourist office calls spring Tunisia’s most beautiful season, and Tunis hosts its international book fair in late April.

March is the transition month: comfortable for the medina, but with 45.8 mm of rain over six days you should keep a museum in reserve (WMO normals). By May the city averages 3.7 rain days and a 26.5°C high, warm enough for a long day between Carthage and Sidi Bou Said without the summer glare.

Discover Tunisia, the tourist office’s site, says the country is never more beautiful than in spring, recommends archaeological circuits among the spring flowers and names Jazz à Carthage as one of the festivals that open the season; it does not publish dates for it. The 40th Tunis International Book Fair ran from 24 April to 3 May 2026 at the Palais des expositions du Kram, north of the centre, according to Kapitalis.

Opening hours lengthen as well. The heritage agency switches sites to summer timetables, so the Carthage Museum moves from 08:30–17:00 to 08:00–18:00 and Dougga from 08:30–17:30 to 08:00–19:00 (AMVPPC Carthage; AMVPPC Dougga). The pages do not give a changeover date, so check on arrival.

How hot is Tunis in summer, and what is on?

June to August average highs of 31°C to 34.5°C, with nights near 19°C to 23°C and almost no rain. The Carthage International Festival held 20 evenings in the Roman theatre from 16 July to 19 August 2026. The FCDO warns that heatwaves can cause power cuts and that harassment reports rise in summer.

Summer is for the coast and for early starts: August averages a 34.5°C high and a 22.9°C low (WMO normals). Do Carthage and the medina at opening time, rest through the afternoon and save Sidi Bou Said for the evening. The Ennejma Ezzahra palace there shortens its day to 09:00–15:30 in July and August (CMAM).

The 60th Carthage International Festival ran from 16 July to 19 August 2026 with 20 evenings, mostly concerts, in the theatre of the ancient city (Kapitalis). The festival site lists ticket desks at the Roman theatre and the Cité de la Culture. Concerts finish late, so plan the ride back to your base before you go.

The FCDO says heatwaves and extreme temperatures may occur in summer and can strain the grid, causing power cuts that affect air conditioning, mobile networks and card payments. It also notes that reports of sexual harassment and assault rise in the summer months, in busy places at night and on quieter beaches by day, and that some beaches use a flag system you should follow.

Why is autumn one of the best times for Tunis?

Link to this answer

Because the heat breaks without the winter rain. October averages a 26.7°C high and about six rain days, and the tourist office still promotes autumn swimming. Culture returns too: the Journées Musicales de Carthage ran 3–10 October 2026, followed by the Journées Théâtrales de Carthage on 21–28 November.

September is warm and mostly sunny, but it is the month the autumn rain comes back: 58.2 mm on average, almost as much as January, over about five rain days (WMO normals). The pay-off is warm sea air into October; Discover Tunisia describes autumn as a time for swimming, long beach walks and boat trips.

The same page highlights two autumn festivals near Tunis: Octobre Musical, a classical series at the Acropolium of Carthage, and Musiqât, traditional Mediterranean music at the Baron d’Erlanger palace in Sidi Bou Said; it gives no dates. The culture ministry’s 2026 calendar, reported by Webdo on 12 May 2026, set the Journées Musicales de Carthage for 3–10 October and the Journées Théâtrales de Carthage for 21–28 November.

November is milder and wetter, at 21.5°C and 53.1 mm over almost seven days. Carry a light waterproof, and note the FCDO’s warning that large potholes can appear after heavy rain (FCDO).

What is Tunis like in winter?

Link to this answer

Cool and showery rather than cold. December to February average highs of 16.4°C to 17.6°C, lows near 8°C to 9°C and about eight rain days a month. It is the season for the Bardo, the medina and Carthage on dry days, and the Carthage film festival runs 12–19 December 2026.

December is the wettest month, with 68.1 mm over 8.3 days, and January is the coolest, with a 16.4°C high and an 8.2°C low (WMO normals). Days are short and sites close earlier: the Bardo keeps winter hours of 09:30–16:30 and closes on Mondays (AMVPPC), and the Carthage Museum closes at 17:00 (AMVPPC).

Discover Tunisia’s winter page pitches the season for medinas, museums and archaeological sites, naming the UNESCO medinas of Tunis, Kairouan and Sousse, the Bardo’s mosaics, Dougga, Carthage and El Jem. That suits a culture-first trip; it does not suit a beach week.

The 37th Journées Cinématographiques de Carthage, a film festival, is set for 12–19 December 2026 (Webdo). Check the venue list when the programme appears and choose a base with easy evening transport; see where to stay in Tunis.

Which events and holidays change a Tunis trip?

Ramadan, next starting in February 2027 according to the FCDO, changes the daily rhythm and opening hours. Festivals cluster around Carthage: the book fair in late April, the summer festival from mid-July to mid-August, the music week in October, theatre in November and film in December. Book rooms early for those weeks.

The FCDO says Ramadan dates vary by year and country, with the next one starting in February 2027, and that eating, drinking, smoking or chewing gum in public in the daytime may cause offence. Alcohol is banned from supermarket sale on Fridays and restricted during Ramadan, though not in holiday resorts.

Sites switch to Ramadan timetables: the Bardo opens 09:30–16:30, the Carthage Museum 08:00–17:00 and El Jem’s amphitheatre 08:00–17:00 (AMVPPC Bardo; AMVPPC Carthage; AMVPPC El Jem). Transtu publishes a separate Ramadan timetable for buses, the light metro and the TGM (Transtu). See Ramadan travel planning for the wider picture.

What risks should shape your Tunis dates?

Link to this answer

Check the FCDO before booking. It says terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks, that a state of emergency has been in place since 2015 and that protests usually happen in central Tunis, often at weekends and on national dates. It advises against travel to some border areas, including Kasserine governorate; Tunis is not among them.

The FCDO’s Tunisia page was last updated on 24 July 2026 and was still current on 16 October. It advises against all travel to the Chaambi Mountains National Park and several military zones near the Algerian border, and to areas near the Libyan border; it advises against all but essential travel to Kasserine governorate, including Sbeitla, and to border strips in Jendouba and El Kef governorates. None of the Tunis areas in our guides is affected.

For the city itself, the FCDO safety page names theft as the most common crime and says demonstrations can start with little warning and occasionally turn violent; avoid them and follow any checkpoints. Summer brings extra heat, power-cut and harassment risks, as covered above.

Practical cover matters more than the month. Choose refundable rooms where you can, buy travel insurance when you book, and remember the FCDO’s warning that travelling against its advice could invalidate a policy.

Which months suit which kind of Tunis trip?

Link to this answer

First-time sightseers should aim for April, May or October. Beach-and-city trips work best in June or September. Festival-goers want mid-July to mid-August, October or December. Museum-led winter trips are fine if you pack for rain. Anyone planning Dougga or El Jem should prefer spring or autumn.

Start from the kind of trip rather than the calendar. Weather figures are the WMO 1991–2020 Tunis-Carthage normals; hours come from the AMVPPC and event dates from the sources above.

Travellers with limited heat tolerance should take the summer figures seriously: Carthage’s ruins are spread out and largely unshaded, and the Tunis 7-day itinerary adds long road days to Dougga and Kairouan that are hardest from June to September.

So when should you go to Tunis?

Link to this answer

Book May or October if you can choose freely: warm, mostly dry and long enough days for Carthage, the Bardo and a coastal evening. Choose April or late September as close seconds, June for beach time, and December only for culture and the film festival. Whatever the month, check the FCDO again before you fly.

Our ranking: May and October first; April, June and late September second; March and November third for showers; July and August fourth for heat unless the Carthage festival is the point; December to February last for a sightseeing trip, though they are perfectly workable for museums.

Once you have dates, build the days with the Tunis 3-day itinerary or the slower Tunis 7-day itinerary, choose a base in where to stay in Tunis, and see things to do in Tunis and the Tunis destination guide for what to prioritise.
