A Cappadocia 3-day itinerary by area: Göreme’s churches and valleys, underground cities and Ihlara, then Zelve, Avanos and Ürgüp, with hours and swaps.

Key takeaways

How should you spend 3 days in Cappadocia?

Link to this answer

Spend day 1 around Göreme: the Open-Air Museum at 08:00, a valley walk and sunset at Uçhisar Castle. Use day 2 for a balloon attempt, then the Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu underground city and the Ihlara Valley. On day 3, see Zelve–Paşabağları, Avanos and Ürgüp, keeping that dawn as a second balloon chance.

Cappadocia’s sights fall into three clusters: Göreme and Uçhisar in the middle, the underground cities and the Ihlara canyon to the south, and Zelve, Avanos and Ürgüp to the north and east. This plan gives each cluster a day and puts the balloon attempt on day 2, so day 3’s dawn can serve as a backup.

It is a desk-researched suggested route, not one we have walked end to end. Opening hours come from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s museum pages, balloon rules from the Kapadokya slot centre and Anadolu Agency reports of SHGM data, and transport and safety from DHMİ, the Göreme municipality and the UK FCDO, all checked on 16 October 2026.

Base yourself in Göreme if you will not drive; where to stay in Cappadocia compares eight bases. With more time, the Cappadocia 7-day itinerary allows a slower pace, and best time to visit Cappadocia shows which months give the best balloon odds.

What does the 3-day Cappadocia plan look like at a glance?

Link to this answer

Day 1 is Göreme and Uçhisar on foot. Day 2 starts with a balloon attempt, then heads south to an underground city and the Ihlara Valley. Day 3 covers Zelve–Paşabağları, Avanos and Ürgüp, with a second balloon chance at dawn. Only the balloon and any guided tours need booking ahead; every museum-service site in the plan opens daily.

Hours in the table are those the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s museum site listed on 16 October 2026. They can change with the season, so check the pages for Zelve, Kaymaklı, Derinkuyu and Ihlara in the week you travel. All of the museum-service sites in this plan are listed as open every day; Uçhisar Castle is not on the ministry site, so check its hours locally.

The Çavuşin Church, between Göreme and Avanos, was listed as closed for restoration, so this plan leaves it out; you can still walk the Güllüdere Valley nearby.

What should you do on day 1 in Göreme and Uçhisar?

Link to this answer

Be at the Göreme Open-Air Museum when it opens at 08:00, then walk a valley such as Bağlıdere, the Valley of Love, before lunch. After a rest, head to Uçhisar Castle, which GoTürkiye calls the highest point for panoramic views, for late afternoon and sunset. Finish with dinner in Göreme and an early night.

The Göreme Open-Air Museum preserves the monastic settlement that flourished here from the 4th to the 13th century, with churches including St Basil’s, Elmalı, St Barbara, the Serpent Church, the Dark Church, St Catherine, Çarıklı and Tokalı. The Dark Church needs a separate ticket, with a discount for MüzeKart holders.

GoTürkiye’s trekking route links Uçhisar’s Ak Valley, Göreme’s Bağlıdere (the Valley of Love) and Çavuşin’s Güllüdere (routes). Pick one rather than all three, carry water and turn back with daylight to spare. GoTürkiye recommends Uçhisar Castle for its panorama over Göreme, Avanos, Çavuşin, Ortahisar and Pigeon Valley.

If it rains, spend longer inside the museum’s churches and come back for the evening opening, which the museum page lists from 18:00 to 23:00, instead of the valley walk. In winter, light fades early, so swap the order and visit Uçhisar around midday.

How should you plan day 2 with a balloon flight and the south?

Link to this answer

Try for a balloon flight at dawn, then drive or join a tour south to the Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu underground city, both open 08:00–18:00. Continue to the Ihlara Valley, a 14 km canyon up to 120 m deep, where the last tickets are sold at 16:15. If the balloon is cancelled, sleep in and start later.

Choose one underground city. Derinkuyu reaches about 85 m down, has a 55 m ventilation shaft that doubled as a well, and only about 10% of it is open to visitors. Kaymaklı has four floors open, with low, narrow, sloping passages and, on the third floor, an andesite block carved with 57 holes for grinding. Both involve stooping through tight tunnels, so skip them if you are claustrophobic.

The Ihlara Valley, in the Güzelyurt district of Aksaray province, is listed as 14 km long and up to 120 m deep, with rock-cut churches such as Ağaçaltı, whose frescoes date from the 9th to the 11th century. The official page directs visitors to the main gate, number 2. Fourteen kilometres is too far for an afternoon after an underground city, so choose a section with your driver or guide.

This is the day to book a guided tour or hire a car: GoTürkiye maps the underground cities and Ihlara as a single route from Göreme via Nevşehir (routes), and we found no timetabled bus that links them. Keep the day flexible so a rebooked balloon on day 3 does not clash with a fixed tour start.

What should you do on day 3 in Zelve, Avanos and Ürgüp?

Link to this answer

Use dawn for a second balloon chance, then visit Zelve–Paşabağları when it opens at 08:00 for its three valleys and multi-headed fairy chimneys. Stop at Devrent Valley’s animal-shaped rocks, have lunch and a pottery visit in Avanos, then end in Ürgüp at the Three Beauties and Ortahisar Castle.

At Zelve–Paşabağları, the first valley holds a bulgur mill and the Balıklı and Üzümlü churches, the second the Church of the Holy Cross, and the third a village square, a monastery and a mosque. Paşabağı, once known as the Valley of the Priests, has a chapel dedicated to St Simeon in a three-headed fairy chimney. Last tickets are sold at 17:15.

GoTürkiye’s 48-hour plan suggests Devrent Valley for fairy chimneys that resemble animals, lunch and a pottery atelier in Avanos, and Ürgüp’s Three Beauties, with Ortahisar Castle and Mustafapaşa’s churches nearby. If time is short, drop Mustafapaşa and keep the Three Beauties for the late-afternoon light.

If day 2’s balloon was cancelled and today’s flies, push Zelve back by an hour and skip Mustafapaşa. If you fly home today, keep the afternoon short: Kapadokya Airport is 30 km from Nevşehir city (DHMİ).

How do you fit a balloon flight into three days?

Link to this answer

Book the flight for day 2 and ask for free rebooking onto day 3 if it is cancelled. Flights need SHGM permission each morning: the Kapadokya slot centre posts sector assessments in advance, and red or yellow flags mean no take-off. In the first half of 2026, balloons flew on 90 of 181 days.

According to SHGM data reported by Anadolu Agency, flying days in 2026 ranged from eight in February to 25 in June, and the region averages about 220 a year. That makes two balloon dawns a reasonable bet from late spring to early autumn, and a gamble in winter.

The Kapadokya slot service centre publishes its assessment for each flying sector ahead of the morning; under a green flag, the final decision rests with the pilot and operator. On 17–19 May 2026, flights were cancelled three days running after the SHGM Nevşehir coordinator’s assessment (Evrensel/AA).

What changes in rain, snow or summer heat?

Link to this answer

In rain or snow, lean on the underground cities and the Göreme churches, and shorten valley walks. In summer, walk valleys at opening time and save underground cities for the afternoon. In wind, expect balloon cancellations and keep both dawns free. Winter days are short, so start sightseeing at 08:00 and finish by dusk.

Nevşehir’s 1991–2020 normals show January highs of 4.1°C and lows of −3.5°C, against July highs of 29.3°C, and May is the wettest month at 57.4 mm (WMO normals). The museum service notes that underground cities stay cool in summer and warm in winter (Derinkuyu), which makes them the best swap for either extreme.

The Ihlara Valley is the plan’s most exposed stop, so in heavy rain keep to a short section near the main gate or swap it for the second underground city. The FCDO warns that severe rainstorms can cause flooding and landslides in Turkey; follow local advice before driving.

In July and August, highs average about 29°C, and the FCDO notes that wildfires are frequent in summer, with fines for lighting fires in risk areas. Start valley walks early, carry water and keep midday for Avanos’s pottery workshops or a long lunch.

How do you get around Cappadocia for three days?

Link to this answer

Without a car, base yourself in Göreme, walk on day 1 and book tours for days 2 and 3. The municipal bus links Göreme and Nevşehir roughly every 30 minutes, and Kapadokya Airport has a shuttle timed to scheduled flights. To drive, UK visitors need a 1968 international driving permit or a licence notarised in Turkish.

Göreme’s municipal timetable shows buses to Nevşehir from 07:30 and back from 07:00, about every half-hour through the day. DHMİ says Kapadokya Airport, 30 km from Nevşehir, is served by the İpek Tur shuttle, taxis and hire cars.

The FCDO advises using registered, metered taxis, notes that app-based and pre-booked taxis are widely available, and describes quad biking as an extreme sport that needs specific insurance, adding that hire-company insurance usually covers only third parties.

If you drive, carry the right permit and avoid night driving on unfamiliar roads; the FCDO says accidents are common and road surfaces can be poor in remote areas. Park legally at each site and keep valuables out of sight.

Which tours fit a 3-day Cappadocia itinerary?

Link to this answer

A balloon flight and a southern day tour covering an underground city and the Ihlara Valley are the two bookings worth making. Day 1 works independently on foot from Göreme. Compare pick-up points, which entry tickets are included, group size and weather-cancellation terms before paying, and keep the balloon booking refundable.

Tour listings for Cappadocia typically cover balloon flights, southern days combining an underground city with Ihlara, northern days covering Zelve, Paşabağı, Devrent and Avanos, and guided hikes. Check whether museum entries are included, because each site has its own ticket and the Dark Church charges separately (Dark Church).

The FCDO treats quad biking as an extreme sport needing specific insurance, so check your policy before adding an ATV sunset ride. For how marketplaces differ on refunds, see GetYourGuide vs Viator vs Klook.

Who should change this Cappadocia plan?

Link to this answer

Winter visitors should add a fourth dawn for the balloon and swap Ihlara for both underground cities. Hikers can replace day 3’s drive with a long valley walk from Göreme or Uçhisar. Claustrophobic travellers should skip the underground cities. Anyone with a week should use the 7-day itinerary for a slower pace.

Balloons flew on only eight or nine days a month in January and February 2026 (AA), so a three-day winter trip may get no flight at all; a fourth night improves the odds. Families with young children should check each operator’s age and height limits before booking a flight.

If you arrive from Istanbul, the Istanbul 3-day itinerary pairs well with this plan, and British visitors can stay up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa (FCDO); other nationalities should check the Turkey e-visa guide. For more ideas, see things to do in Cappadocia.
