Should you use Despegar in 2026?

Yes as a Latin America comparison screen if you can read the binding fare language — usually Spanish. Re-price LATAM or Avianca direct, match both passport surnames, and rebuild packages on Booking.com. Prosus completed the acquisition on 15 May 2025; that does not make checkout Expedia. We are not affiliated; Trip.com, Booking.com and Aviasales are the partner paths.

Despegar is a long-standing LatAm OTA, now under Prosus. It is not Travelocity and not an airline. The rest of this guide is how to read the contract before a cuota banner or a missing maternal surname burns the trip.

What is Despegar and how does it work?

Despegar is a major Latin American online travel agency for flights, hotels and packages. You pay Despegar on despegar.com. It is not a metasearch engine like Skyscanner. Use it as a regional checkout, then re-price the airline and Booking.com on the same dates. Spanish-language fare rules are the contract even if the marketing tiles were in English.

If you are booking inside Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico or similar markets, Despegar is a local default screen. If you are in the UK booking London–Buenos Aires, still start with Google Flights and the airline (British Airways, LATAM, Iberia as applicable on your date), then Despegar and Trip.com as OTA checks.

Second surnames on passports must match the ticket; a missing maternal surname is a classic LatAm check-in stall. If you cannot complete that matching, book the airline in English and accept a slightly higher fare. Translate the change-fee and baggage paragraphs before you pay, not after a strike. Currency and cuotas are part of how locals actually pay. Visitors paying a UK card will not see the same stack, which is why a “Despegar is always cheapest” clip can be true for an Argentine cuota user and false for a GBP cash checkout. Compare the cash total in the currency you will pay, with bags added, then decide.

Is Despegar legit, safe and reliable?

Yes — it is a long-standing LatAm travel company, not a fly-by-night. Reliability is OTA-standard and can be slower across borders when you need English-language support. Pay on the official domain; check live Trustpilot and local consumer sites on booking day. We are not inventing a Trustpilot star figure for Despegar.

Card-from-Europe checkouts can trigger extra verification. Complete 3-D Secure before you assume the fare is held. Section 75 still wants a UK credit card over £100 if that is your protection plan (Which?). Pay on the official despegar.com domain, not a lookalike and not a WhatsApp “asesor”.

Fake “Despegar atención al cliente” numbers exist in search ads in Spanish and English. Use the logged-in booking. Trip.com at 4.4/5 from ~193,000 and Gotogate at 2.6/5 from ~151,000 (12 Aug 2026) show how far OTA review files can sit apart — read Despegar’s live page the day you pay rather than importing a US-blog score. UK ATOL is a UK scheme (CAA). A Despegar package sold under Argentine or other local rules is not automatically an ATOL certificate. Do not talk yourself into CAA protection because the basket includes a hotel. Searching despegar.com is safe. Paying a phishing domain that ranks for “Despegar teléfono” is not.

Is Despegar the cheapest in Latin America?

Often competitive on regional flights and local packages — not automatically cheaper than LATAM, Avianca or Aeroméxico direct, or than Trip.com on the same international long-haul. Compare like-for-like bags and change rules. Instalment (“cuotas”) pricing is not the same as a cheaper cash fare. We do not invent fares — run the search.

Hotels: Booking.com and the hotel’s own rate still belong in the tab set (hotels 101, Booking.com). A package banner that hides a worse room or a worse cancellation is not a saving. We will not publish a rotting “Buenos Aires from $X” table. Run the search on your dates, add bags before you compare, and treat a Despegar tile that excludes a cabin bag as a different product from a LATAM fare that includes one (carry-on sizes).

Currency: browsing in USD then paying in ARS, MXN or CLP (or the reverse) can move the total. Lock the currency you will actually pay before you compare the airline. Cuotas are not a cheaper cash fare. Trip.com is a useful named-OTA comparison on international long-haul; Aviasales is a second grid for discovery — still re-price the winner on the carrier. Despegar vs Trip.com vs Booking vs the airline?

Regional LatAm: Despegar versus the local airline. International long-haul: airline plus Google Flights first. Stays: Booking.com. Trip.com as a global OTA with chat. Do not let a package banner skip the DIY rebuild. Skyscanner may still list Despegar as a click-out — vet it like any OTA. Aviasales is discovery, not the merchant.

We will not map Despegar onto Expedia or Travelocity. Different companies unless you have a sourced filing in front of you — we do not. Compare live merchants, not inherited US-blog family trees. A workable UK-to-LatAm workflow: Google Flights for the airline-direct baseline → Despegar only if you can read the fare rules → Booking.com for the hotel if you split the basket → Trip.com if you want chat without Spanish-first support → Aviasales or Skyscanner only to discover, not as the merchant.

Gotogate is a weaker Trustpilot file — do not treat all Skyscanner OTAs as equal (Gotogate). If you arrived from a meta click-out, you still choose the pay button on purpose. Sister-looking logos in the region are not automatically Despegar shopfronts; the merchant on the receipt is the one that matters.

How do you use Despegar well?

Use the official site, match passport names including second surnames, and read whether the package is refundable. Screenshot the Spanish fare rules if that is the binding language — translate before you pay. Compare cash totals, not cuota banners. If you cannot understand the change fees, do not buy a non-refundable international ticket here.

Installment plans can be the local product. They are financing, not a discount. If you will pay cash from a UK card, compare the cash checkout with the airline in the same currency. A cuota banner that splits a fare into twelve payments is a loan against the same seat LATAM.com is selling in cash — know both numbers before you tap.

Despegar as a LatAm OTA after the Prosus acquisition — what actually changed?

Despegar remains a Latin American online travel agency you pay on despegar.com. Prosus completed its acquisition on 15 May 2025 at $19.50 per share and took the company private. That parent change does not make checkout Expedia, Travelocity or Booking.com. Read the Spanish fare rules; rebuild packages; book the airline when the cash gap is thin.

Despegar is the regional OTA many travellers in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and neighbouring markets already have on their phone. You pay Despegar. Despegar issues the ticket or package under airline and hotel rules. It is not a metasearch like Skyscanner or Aviasales, and it is not the airline. If you are booking EZE–SCL or a Mexico City hotel, it is a local default screen. If you are in the UK booking London–Buenos Aires, still start with Google Flights and the airline (British Airways, LATAM, Iberia as applicable on your date), then Despegar and Trip.com as OTA checks. Prosus and Despegar announced completion of the acquisition on 15 May 2025 at $19.50 per share (Prosus — acquisition complete). That is a sourced parent-company fact. It does not rewrite the fare rules on your ticket, it does not move your change desk to Booking.com, and it does not make a Despegar e-ticket a Prosus consumer product you can call in London. Treat the merchant on the card statement as Despegar. We do not claim Travelocity or Expedia ownership — we are not sure, so we do not. If a US blog told you Despegar “is Expedia”, treat that as unsourced until a filing says so.

What still burns people after the deal is the same as before it: Spanish (or Portuguese) as the binding contract language, cuotas that hide the cash total, dual surnames that do not match the passport, and packages that are non-refundable while Booking.com had the same hotel as free-cancellation. Translate the change-fee and baggage paragraphs before you pay. Lock the currency you will actually settle — browsing in USD then paying in ARS, MXN or CLP can move the total. Rebuild the package as airline plus Booking.com once. If you cannot understand the contract, walk away; Trip.com or the airline in English is the adult path.

UK protection does not import because a Dutch-listed parent now owns the group. Section 75 may apply to qualifying UK credit-card spend if the merchant fails (Which? — Section 75). ATOL is a UK package scheme (CAA — what ATOL covers); a Despegar bundle sold under Argentine or other local rules is not automatically an ATOL certificate. Demand a certificate you can check on caa.co.uk only if a UK ATOL holder actually sold the package — otherwise read the local terms. Partner alternatives on this page are Trip.com, Booking.com and Aviasales: named global OTA, stay specialist, search layer. None of them is “Despegar after Prosus”.

How do you book Despegar without getting burned?

Understand the contract language, match names, and compare cash totals with the airline and Booking.com. Pay on the official domain. If the saving is thin or you cannot parse the rules, walk away. UK ATOL does not automatically apply. Section 75 may apply to qualifying UK credit-card spend. Fake hotlines are a walk-away.

The burned traveller skipped the maternal surname, bought cuotas without reading the cash price, or called a phishing number after a schedule change. The second burned traveller trusted a package tile without rebuilding it on Booking.com. The third assumed Prosus ownership meant English-first airline-style support. It does not.

Section 75: Which?. ATOL: CAA. Local consumer protection follows the merchant’s terms and your country’s card rules — not a UK package certificate you never received. If 3-D Secure fails twice, book the airline rather than retrying a dying fare.

After Select on Skyscanner, Despegar can sit near the top because the headline is cheap — not because the Spanish change paragraph is kind. Open fare conditions for cabin bag, checked bag and names before you compare. Under a thin OTA saving, book direct (when booking direct wins).

What are Despegar’s hidden catches?

Language-of-contract, local-currency versus USD or GBP checkout, and package components that are harder to change than separate tickets. Headline savings can vanish when you add bags. Cuotas are financing. Second-surname mismatches stall check-in. Fake phone numbers impersonate atención al cliente.

Catch 1 — Spanish fare rules bind even if you browsed in English. The marketing tiles can be bilingual; the contract paragraph that governs bags, changes and names is often Spanish. Machine-translate that paragraph before you enter the card, not after a strike. If you cannot parse the change fee, you should not buy a non-refundable international ticket here — book the airline in English instead.

Catch 2 — cuotas look cheaper per month and cost more in cash. Instalment pricing is the local product in several Despegar markets. It is financing, not a discount on the seat. If you will pay a UK card in one shot, compare the cash checkout with LATAM, Avianca or Aeroméxico in the same currency. A twelve-month banner is not a reason the airline “lost”.

Catch 3 — packages that are non-refundable while Booking.com was free-cancellation. A flight-plus-hotel tile can hide a worse room, a worse cancellation window, or an inbound that lands after check-in. Rebuild as two carts on the airline and Booking.com before you trust a bundle saving. Match the hotel pin, occupancy and refund rules — not the neighbourhood marketing name (hotels 101).

Catch 4 — name order and dual surnames. Latin American passports often carry a paternal and a maternal surname. Dropping the second one is a classic check-in stall. Match the ticket to the passport machine-readable zone, including order. If the form fights you, stop and ticket on the airline site in the language you can check at the gate.

Catch 5 — fake “Despegar atención al cliente” numbers in Spanish and English ads. Because travellers Google the brand plus “teléfono” when a flight moves, spam pages advertise numbers that harvest callers and OTPs. Never call a number for Despegar you found on a third-party site or in a text. Log into the booking you paid and start help from there.

Catch 6 — assuming a US OTA family tree (Expedia or Travelocity) applies. We do not claim that. When is Despegar NOT the right tool?

Skip it when you cannot read the fare rules, when the airline matches, when you need English-first support at 2am, and for award tickets. Skip lookalike domains. Skip it as your only long-haul agency from the UK when Trip.com or the airline is clearer. Must-not-fail: airline-direct.

You can still use Despegar as a LatAm price check. Paying it requires a contract you understand. The pattern is the same as every OTA: the basket adds convenience exactly where you cannot afford a slow, Spanish-first change desk. Award tickets, must-not-fail long-haul, and fare rules you cannot parse are the three walk-aways.

Does Despegar work for hotels, packages and cars?

Yes: hotels, dynamic packages and some cars sit beside flights. Each needs a specialist check. Booking.com for many stays, the airline for the long-haul, a car specialist rather than a pre-ticked checkout extra. A Despegar package is a Despegar contract — not automatically UK ATOL, not automatically the hotel’s own rate.

Rebuild flight-plus-hotel as two carts on the airline and Booking.com before you trust a bundle saving. Cars and experiences pre-ticked at the end of a flight funnel are optional until you need them — price them as such. Insurance tick-boxes are not a full travel policy (travel resources). A Despegar package is not automatically UK ATOL and not automatically the hotel’s own member rate.

What Despegar tips do most people miss?

Translate the fare rules first, then match both surnames to the passport. Compare cash totals, not cuotas. Rebuild packages as DIY on the airline and Booking.com. Lock the payment currency before you compare. Ignore Google-ad hotlines. Have a backup merchant if 3-D Secure fails. Screenshot the Spanish paragraph you accepted.

If you are a UK traveller, keep Section 75 in mind and do not invent ATOL. If you are a local paying in cuotas, still know the cash price so you can compare LATAM.com honestly. Same-session booking matters more than any cookie myth. Incognito mode does not create Despegar fares.

LatAm residents who already live in the app are the core user. UK long-haul travellers should treat it as an optional comparison tab.

If dual surnames on your passport already confuse airline.com, do not add an OTA layer. Book the carrier in the language you can check at the gate.

How do I speak to a human at Despegar?

Use the official help path from the logged-in Despegar booking — not a phone number from Google ads in Spanish or English. Fake atención al cliente pages are a known scam. Keep the locator. Language support follows the site you booked. Do not share OTPs with a caller who already “knows” your booking ID.

Hang up, type despegar.com yourself, log in, and open help. The same fake-hotline pattern as every OTA in this file. If you booked in Spanish, expect Spanish-first support even if you are sitting in London. A caller who already knows your locator is not proof they are Despegar — phishing scripts include locators. Does booking via Despegar earn airline miles?

How do I cancel a Despegar booking?

Cancel with Despegar under the Spanish (or other binding) fare rules you accepted. Package rules and flight-only rules differ. You do not cancel with Skyscanner. UK ATOL will not usually apply.
