What is the best 7-day itinerary for Fez?

Give Fez itself three unhurried days, then use the second half of the week for the region: Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Meknes on day four, an overnight in Chefchaouen on days five and six, and a slow final day back in Fez. Base yourself where a driver can collect you, such as Batha or Fès Jdid.

This shape works because the region’s big sites cluster. UNESCO places Volubilis at the foot of the Jebel Zerhoun, notes that Idris I is buried at nearby Moulay Idriss (UNESCO Volubilis), and describes Meknes as sitting on the Saïss plain between the Middle Atlas and the Zerhoun massif (UNESCO Meknes). One well-planned day covers all three.

It differs from our Fez 3-day itinerary, which keeps every day inside the city. Here the medina is spread over three shorter days so that you still have energy for two long road days later in the week.

What does a week in Fez look like day by day?

Days one to three stay in Fez, day four is the long Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Meknes day, days five and six take you to Chefchaouen and back with a night there, and day seven is light. The table lists what to book and which closed days to plan around.

The two closures that shape the week are both on Tuesdays: the Batha Museum in Fez and the Dar Jamaï music museum in Meknes (Fondation Nationale des Musées). Keep day one and day four off a Tuesday, or swap days to suit.

Book the Chefchaouen room before anything else in the second half of the week, because the whole plan pivots on that night. If it falls through, replace days five and six with a second slow Fez day and a half-day hammam or cooking class.

How should you use the three Fez days?

Spread the medina over three shorter days instead of one long march: the Batha Museum and its garden on arrival, a guided day through the medersas and tanneries, then Fès Jdid, the Andalous bank and the Merinid tombs at sunset. Shorter days leave energy for the long drives later in the week.

Day one starts gently at the Batha Museum, which reopened in February 2025 with an Andalusian garden filling more than half the site; foreign adults pay 60 dirhams (Fondation Nationale des Musées). It is a calm introduction to the craft traditions you will see working in the souqs the next day.

Day two is the guided day. Follow the classic circuit from Bou Inania near Bab Boujloud to the restored Cherratine and Attarine medersas (Hespress), then the Qarawiyyin quarter and the Chouara tanneries. The FCDO advises using guides who carry an official badge and local-authority permission.

How do you combine Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Meknes in one day?

Leave Fez early and see Volubilis first, before the open site heats up, then drive the short way to Moulay Idriss Zerhoun and finish in Meknes for the imperial gates, Place El-Hdim and the Dar Jamaï music museum. It is a long day; a private driver or small-group tour makes it workable.

Volubilis grew from a Mauritanian capital into an important Roman outpost, and its 42-hectare site has produced mosaics, bronze and marble statuary and hundreds of inscriptions, according to UNESCO. The Ministry of Culture sells entry online at 100 dirhams for foreign adults and 50 for children aged 7 to 13; Moroccan nationals enter free on Fridays (official ticket platform).

Moulay Idriss Zerhoun grew around the tomb of Idris I, founder of the Idrisid dynasty, who briefly made Volubilis his capital (UNESCO). Treat it as a religious town: dress modestly, stay out of shrine areas unless you are clearly welcome, and read our religious site etiquette guide.

Meknes became a capital under Sultan Moulay Ismaïl (1672–1727), whose walls are pierced by nine monumental gates around 25 mosques, 10 hammams, palaces and granaries (UNESCO). On Place El-Hdim, Dar Jamaï, now the national music museum, opens 10:00–18:00 and closes on Tuesdays (Fondation Nationale des Musées).

Is Chefchaouen worth an overnight from Fez?

Yes, if you want the blue town at its calmest. The road journey north is long in both directions, so an overnight lets you see the kasbah and medina in the late afternoon, then walk the lanes again early next morning before heading back. As a same-day return, it is mostly time in a vehicle.

The kasbah was built in 1471 under Emir Ali Ben Rached as a stronghold and residence. Its mud-brick wall has 13 towers and encloses a small mosque, a prison and a 2,300-square-metre Andalusian garden. Foreign adults pay 80 dirhams and children aged 7 to 13 pay 40, and Moroccan nationals enter free on Fridays and on the first day of national and religious holidays (Ministry of Culture).

Use a private driver, a tour with an overnight, or a coach. We could not load coach timetables when checking, so confirm departure times with the operator, and allow plenty of slack on the return on day six rather than planning a fixed Fez dinner reservation.

If the overnight does not work, replace days five and six with a second slow Fez day and a half-day hammam or craft class; the rest of the week stays the same.

What should the last day of a Fez week look like?

Keep it light and close to your base: a morning craft workshop or cooking class, a final walk through the souqs to buy what you priced earlier in the week, then the transfer to the airport or station. Avoid anything with a fixed start time in the three hours before you need to leave.

Fez’s crafts are part of why UNESCO values the medina: its listing links the city to intangible-heritage elements for Arabic calligraphy, engraving on metals and malhun poetry and music (UNESCO). A short workshop is a good way to end a week that has mostly been about looking.

Pay for larger purchases where you can see the goods being packed. The FCDO warns that scammers sometimes swap inferior goods for those you bought and that credit card fraud is common. For the final taxi, agree the fare in advance or check the meter.

How do the day trips from Fez compare?

Volubilis is the strongest single trip for history, Meknes the easiest to combine with it, Moulay Idriss the shortest stop, and Chefchaouen the only one that justifies a night away. Driver, tour, train or hire car for the regional days?

A private driver or small-group tour is the simplest way to link Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Meknes in one day, because you move between three places on a fixed schedule. Meknes alone works by train. Hire a car only if you are comfortable with Moroccan traffic and with parking outside medina walls.

Fès and Meknès are both on the ONCF rail network that also serves Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier and Marrakech (Seat 61), with tickets sold through ONCF. We could not load timetables when checking, so check departures for your date before planning a Meknes-only day by train.

For self-drive, read renting a car in Morocco first. For taxis, the FCDO advises agreeing the fare or checking the meter, and notes that cars booked through ride-hailing apps may be unregulated and unlicensed.

Which season suits a Fez week with day trips?

April, May and October suit this plan best: WMO averages for Fes show highs of 22–26°C, comfortable for the exposed Volubilis site and the long drives. In July and August, highs average 35.1°C, so start day trips at dawn. From November to March, carry rain gear for the drive to Chefchaouen.

The figures are WMO 1991–2020 normals for Fes: average highs of 22.0°C in April, 26.4°C in May and 26.1°C in October, against 35.1°C in July and August. Rain falls on eight or nine days a month from November to April, and on only two or three days a month from June to August.

What should you book first for a week in Fez?
