Key takeaways
- Book the official ticket for the date you will actually hike, get a health certificate issued no more than three days before, and check that the park is open.

- On the official booking platform in October 2026, entry cost Rp155,000 for foreign visitors on any day, and Rp22,000 on weekdays or Rp32,000 at weekends…
- Yes. BBKSDA East Java requires every hiker to bring and show a valid health certificate issued no more than three days before the visit date.
- The gas can be strong enough to hurt, which is why a mask is on the official kit list. Do not hike if you have heart disease, asthma or a breathing disorder.

How do you plan an Ijen Crater hike in 2026?
Link to this answerBook the official ticket for the date you will actually hike, get a health certificate issued no more than three days before, and check that the park is open. The gate at Paltuding opens at 02:00 and closes at 12:00 WIB. Bring a mask, warm layers and shoes with grip.
Kawah Ijen Nature Recreation Park (TWA Kawah Ijen) straddles Banyuwangi and Bondowoso regencies in East Java and is managed by BBKSDA East Java, the regional conservation agency. Its official page on the Forestry Ministry’s AyoKeTamanNasional platform highlights the turquoise crater lake, one of the most acidic in the world, sunrise from the summit area, traditional sulphur mining and views of Mount Ranti and Mount Raung. Ijen is also part of the Ijen UNESCO Global Geopark, designated in 2023.
The climb starts at Paltuding on a steep trail that TIMES Indonesia put at roughly 3 km (June 2023). Most hikers start in the dark to reach the rim around dawn. The sections below cover the blue fire, tickets, the health certificate, gas safety, the miners, getting there from Banyuwangi, alert levels and how to compare tours.
When can you see Ijen’s blue fire, and is it allowed?
Link to this answerThe blue fire is burning volcanic gas, visible only in darkness, so seeing it means a pre-dawn hike; the Paltuding gate opens at 02:00 WIB. It is not an attraction the park promotes, and Badan Geologi’s advice has been not to descend to the crater floor or approach the rim. Ask any tour exactly where you will stand.
Official visiting hours are 02:00 to 12:00 WIB, according to the Ijen page, which leaves a short window in darkness. In 2022 BBKSDA East Java’s acting head told detikJatim that the blue flame was not an attraction the agency offered; it promotes the scenery, the acidic lake and sunrise instead.
The closest views of the flames have traditionally been from inside the crater, which is exactly where the official advice says not to go. When Ijen returned to Level I in August 2023, Badan Geologi asked climbers and visitors not to approach the crater rim or descend to the crater floor, and not to stay overnight within 500 m of the crater (detikJatim, 3 August 2023). Tour listings differ: some promise the blue fire, others say you see it from a distance. Book for the sunrise and the crater lake, and treat the blue fire as a bonus.
Mind the date rule. If you arrive at Paltuding on Saturday night to hike before dawn, the booking platform says you need Sunday’s ticket, not Saturday’s.
How much does an Ijen Crater ticket cost?
Link to this answerOn the official booking platform in October 2026, entry cost Rp155,000 for foreign visitors on any day, and Rp22,000 on weekdays or Rp32,000 at weekends and on national holidays for Indonesian citizens, with insurance included. Tickets are paid online, cannot be cancelled, rescheduled or refunded, and must match your passport or ID.
We checked prices for a weekday and a Saturday in October 2026 on the AyoKeTamanNasional platform, which says its totals include insurance and other fees. The base rates follow the national conservation tariff that BBKSDA East Java applied from 30 October 2024 (detikJatim, 28 October 2024). Vehicles and camping are charged separately.
The platform began a trial for visit dates from 18 May 2026, with the previous app still available during the transition. Show the QR code on your phone or as a printout at the gate. Ticket payment at Ijen has been cashless (QRIS) since 31 January 2025, Antara reported, so do not count on paying cash.
Because the ticket is non-refundable, check the closure calendar and the alert level before you pay, and book the date of the hike, not the evening you leave your hotel.
| Official platform price (checked October 2026) | Weekday | Weekend or national holiday |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign visitor (WNA), entry | Rp155,000 | Rp155,000 |
| Indonesian citizen (WNI), entry | Rp22,000 | Rp32,000 |
| Motorbike | Rp5,000 | Rp5,000 |
| Car | Rp10,000 | Rp10,000 |
| Camping (on top of entry) | Rp5,000 | Rp5,000 |
Do you need a health certificate to hike Ijen?
Link to this answerYes. BBKSDA East Java requires every hiker to bring and show a valid health certificate issued no more than three days before the visit date. It also says visitors must be physically and mentally fit, and that people with a history of heart disease, asthma, respiratory infections or breathing disorders are not recommended to hike.
The rule appears in the hiking requirements on the official Ijen page and again in the ticket terms, which tie it to regional regulations. Get the certificate from a clinic or doctor close to your hike date, keep it with your passport, and check the issue date: a certificate from the start of a long trip will not be valid at Ijen a week later.
Some tour listings include the certificate in the price; others leave it to you. If yours arranges it, ask where and when, because a clinic stop adds time to an already short night. If you have a heart or lung condition, take the official warning seriously and consider skipping the climb.
How dangerous is the sulphur gas at Ijen, and who should not go?
Link to this answerThe gas can be strong enough to hurt, which is why a mask is on the official kit list. Do not hike if you have heart disease, asthma or a breathing disorder. Stay away from the crater floor and rim, turn back if the smell becomes overwhelming, and follow rangers when wind pushes the plume across the trail.
BBKSDA East Java lists anti-slip shoes, a warm jacket and a mask as required personal safety equipment, and its ticket terms say a mask is strongly recommended because the smell and gases from the crater can be strong in places. Badan Geologi’s 2023 Level I advice also told people to wear a mask if they smell strong sulphur.
Know what a higher alert means. When Ijen went to Level II in July 2024, PVMBG set a 1.5 km radius around the crater free of human activity (detikJatim, 12 July 2024), which takes in the rim. The UK Foreign Office warns that exclusion zones can change at short notice.
A simple dust mask is designed for particles, not gas, so ask whether your tour supplies a gas mask with filters and check that it seals before you start. Children, older travellers and anyone unsure of their fitness should weigh the steep climb in cold and darkness alongside the gas.
How should you behave around Ijen’s sulphur miners?
Link to this answerTreat the trail as a workplace. Give way to miners carrying loads, do not block narrow sections for photographs, and ask before taking close-up pictures. Some miners now pull trolley taxis for visitors; agree the price and the route before you sit down, and decide in advance whether you want to tip.
Traditional sulphur mining is one of the features the official Ijen page describes, and the work is physically punishing. Loads are heavy, the path is steep and the gas is hardest on the people who spend the longest in it. Step aside to let loaded carriers pass, keep your head torch out of people’s eyes, and do not handle sulphur blocks without asking.
Trolleys began around 2015 as a way for miners to haul sulphur, and some miners switched to carrying visitors; TIMES Indonesia reported in June 2023 that more than 40 trolleys had permits from BKSDA East Java (TIMES Indonesia). Prices are agreed with the crew, so settle the amount, one way or return, before you start.
How do you get to Ijen from Banyuwangi or Bali?
Link to this answerBase yourself in Banyuwangi or near Licin and reach the Paltuding gate by car, motorbike or tour in the early hours. From Bali, take the ferry from Gilimanuk to Ketapang. From Surabaya, trains run east to Banyuwangi, and Banyuwangi also has an airport with domestic flights.
The ticket counter is at Paltuding, on the border of Licin district (Banyuwangi) and Klobang (Bondowoso), according to the booking platform. Most hikers sleep in Banyuwangi town or in guesthouses on the road up. Pickups for open tours from Banyuwangi start in the small hours; one listing we reviewed left at 01:30, in time for the 02:00 gate opening.
From Bali, ferries cross the Bali Strait from Gilimanuk to Ketapang, ticketed through ASDP’s Ferizy app and website. Overland from Surabaya, trains on the Surabaya–Banyuwangi line end at Ketapang, near the ferry port; check times in the Access by KAI app or on KAI’s website. Coming from Bromo? See our Mount Bromo guide for the combined route.

Where should you stay for an Ijen hike?
Link to this answerBanyuwangi town has the widest choice and easy links on to Bali, while guesthouses on the road towards Licin shorten the night drive. Wherever you stay, ask about early departures, a pickup to Paltuding, somewhere to shower afterwards and a late checkout, because you will be back mid-morning and tired.
Plan two nights if you can: one before the hike, when you will barely sleep, and one after it to recover before a ferry or long drive. That also gives you a fallback day if the park closes or the weather turns.
Read cancellation terms with the closure calendar in mind. The Ijen ticket is non-refundable, and a non-refundable room on top of it doubles the loss if plans change.

Is Ijen open, and what is its alert level?
Link to this answerCheck two things: MAGMA Indonesia for the alert level and recommendations, and the booking calendar for closure days. Ijen closes on scheduled cleaning days, the next listed being 6 November and 4 December 2026, and it was shut from 4 to 28 September 2026 because of a forest fire.
The park’s page lists closures for the Ijen Rijik conservation and cleaning programme and warns that the area can close at any time depending on weather, volcanic activity and management decisions. The booking calendar we checked on 16 October 2026 marked 6 November and 4 December 2026 as closed, and the first Friday of every month in 2027.
Emergencies close it too. BBKSDA East Java shut the park from 4 September 2026 during a forest and land fire and reopened it on 28 September, with online booking restarting on 25 September (Antara, 26 September 2026). Visitors were told to bring a torch, a mask and warm clothing.
For the volcano itself, check MAGMA Indonesia. We could not load it from our desk on 16 October 2026, so we are not quoting a current level here. Read the recommendations as well as the level: even at Level I, the standing advice has been to stay off the crater floor.
What should you compare when booking an Ijen tour?
Link to this answerCompare the total price for your nationality, whether the Rp155,000 foreign entry ticket and the health certificate are included, the pickup area and time, group size, the gas mask supplied, the guide’s experience and the refund terms. Park tickets cannot be refunded, so ask what happens if Ijen closes after you pay.
Listings on big booking platforms can look cheaper than they are. One open trip we reviewed priced its tour for Indonesian citizens, listed extra fees for international visitors and charged more for pickups outside Banyuwangi town. Its own cancellation window was five days, while the park ticket is non-refundable. Neither is unusual, but both change the real price.
Ask the operator to name the guide, how many hikers each guide leads and what they do when wind blows gas over the trail. A good guide turns back rather than pushing on into the plume, and small groups move more safely on a narrow trail in the dark.
- Price for your nationality, with the foreign-visitor entry fee stated
- Health certificate: included, arranged for a fee, or your job
- Gas mask with filters, and a head torch if you do not have one
- Pickup area, start time and any surcharge for hotels outside town
- Group size per guide, and the operator’s plan if gas or weather turns
- Refund terms if the park closes or the alert level rises
