Is the Oman Air First Lounge in Muscat worth it?

Not as a separate goal any more. Oman Air retired First Class in 2024, and its Muscat flagship is now listed as the Business Studio & Business Class Departure Lounge. If your ticket or oneworld status opens it, it is worth using on a long wait; if not, the Primeclass Lounge is the pay-in option.

Oman Air’s own lounges page now names its Muscat departure lounge “Business Studio & Business Class Departure Lounge”, although the detail page it links to is still headed First & Business Class Departure Lounge. Neither page describes a separate first-class entry route.

The oneworld lounge finder lists one lounge for Oman Air flights at Muscat, “Oman Air Business Class”, open to Business Class passengers and oneworld Sapphire and Emerald members, with no First Class access listed.

Before building a tight connection through Muscat, note that the FCDO’s Oman page asks British nationals in the Middle East to be ready for flight cancellations and periodic airspace closures.

What happened to Oman Air First Class and its lounge?

Oman Air’s chief executive said demand for traditional first class had fallen, and the airline replaced it with a Business Studio cabin from September 2024. Its lounge listing followed: the Muscat flagship is presented as a Business Studio and Business lounge, and oneworld lists it as a business-class lounge only.

CAPA reported on 22 August 2024 that Oman Air was retiring First Class and that Business Studio, a lie-flat seat with privacy walls and à la carte dining, could be booked from 9 September 2024, mainly on London and Bangkok services. It quoted chief executive Con Korfiatis saying the traditional first class experience had seen diminished demand.

What happened to the first-class section of the lounge is less clear. One Mile at a Time reported on 10 September 2024 that an Oman Air spokesperson said Business Studio guests use the business section, and that the first-class section was then reserved for VVIP guests pending a final decision. Oman Air’s current pages do not say, so do not plan on a first-class room.

Where is the Oman Air lounge at Muscat, and when is it open?

The oneworld lounge finder places the Oman Air Business Class lounge in the main terminal at Muscat International, on level 5 after security, and lists it as open 24 hours every day. Oman Air’s own lounge pages give neither a location nor opening hours, so the oneworld entry is the best published guide.

The oneworld listing gives the location as Main Terminal, Level 5, after security. It also lists its facilities: a business centre, showers, a quiet or relaxation area, runway views and flight information screens.

Muscat International’s own lounge page describes only the Primeclass Lounge, which it places on the fifth floor after passport control. We could not confirm the walking time between the two rooms or to the gates, so leave the lounge as soon as boarding shows on the screens.

Who can use the Oman Air lounge at Muscat now?

Oman Air Business Studio and Business Class passengers, oneworld first and business passengers, and oneworld Sapphire and Emerald members flying a oneworld airline. Sindbad Gold equals Sapphire; Sindbad Silver equals Ruby, which carries no lounge access. Sapphire, Emerald and first-class passengers may bring one guest who is also flying oneworld.

The oneworld member page maps Sindbad Gold to oneworld Sapphire and Sindbad Silver to Ruby, and says no Sindbad tier currently maps to Emerald. Under the oneworld lounge policy, Sapphire opens business-class and frequent-flyer lounges and Emerald also opens first-class lounges, whatever cabin you fly, as long as the flight is marketed and operated by a oneworld airline.

Two details of that policy matter at Muscat. Spa and pre-flight dining facilities are excluded from alliance access, and access is available on the day of travel or before 06:00 the following day. First Class passengers on other oneworld airlines may use a business lounge where no first-class lounge exists, which is how oneworld now lists Muscat.

What does the Business Studio & Business lounge offer?

Oman Air lists a luggage room, a business centre with Wi-Fi, charging points, dining bars with premium food and drinks, an entertainment area, private nap areas, prayer rooms, a smoking room, a children’s room, a family room and baby-changing facilities. The oneworld listing adds showers, waiter service, à la carte dishes and champagne.

Oman Air’s detail page frames the décor around Oman’s desert and mountain landscapes and leads with practical touches: staff take your bags to a luggage room when you arrive, and there are flight screens, newspapers and magazines.

The oneworld entry is more specific on food and drink, listing buffet and hot food, à la carte dishes, vegetarian options, waiter service, specialty coffee, alcohol and champagne, plus TV, ethernet and charging. Neither page lists a spa for this lounge, so do not plan on one.

What is the Primeclass Lounge, and is paying for it worth it?

It is Muscat’s independent pay-in lounge, run by Primeclass on the fifth floor after passport control and open around the clock. Oman Air sells three hours for OMR 25 to its own ticket holders, while the airport’s page quotes OMR 20 per person. Its facilities include a spa, a cinema, showers and private suites.

Oman Air’s Primeclass page describes three-hour access with an open buffet, a relaxation zone, and private and family rooms subject to availability, free for infants under two. It is non-refundable except when Oman Air disrupts the flight, can be moved to a later date within a year by emailing Primeclass, and is sold only to Oman Air ticket holders.

Muscat International’s page lists a game zone, cinema, private suites, family rooms, a prayer area, meeting rooms, children’s play rooms, showers, a spa, a relaxation zone, baggage storage and a smoking area, with a buffet and alcoholic drinks. It says the lounge serves contracted airlines’ first and business passengers and anyone paying on arrival. The two official prices differ, so confirm the fee at the desk.

Priority Pass lists the Primeclass Lounge and two Be Relax spas at Muscat. Check the Priority Pass app for what your plan includes and what a guest would pay.

How early should you get to the lounge in Muscat?

Oman Air publishes no time limit for its own lounge, so arrive early enough to eat without watching the clock. If you are paying for Primeclass, the three-hour cap sets your window. oneworld status holders should remember that access runs on the day of travel, or before 06:00 the following day.

If Muscat is a connection, the oneworld policy bases lounge access on the long-haul flight’s cabin when you connect between an international long-haul and a short-haul or domestic oneworld flight on the same day. A Business Studio long-haul followed by an Economy regional sector should still get you in, as long as you show the long-haul boarding pass.

Neither Oman Air nor the airport publishes walking times from the upper-floor lounges to the gates. On a short connection, the time is better spent finding your gate than sitting down.

Oman Air lounge verdict by traveller

Business Studio or Business passenger: use it, especially on a long Muscat connection. Sindbad Gold, or another airline’s oneworld Sapphire or Emerald member: use it on any oneworld-operated departure, with one guest. Sindbad Silver or Economy without status: choose Primeclass or your Priority Pass. Nobody should plan around a first-class room.
